A few years ago I started watching the anime series of this and almost shot myself just 4 episodes in. I think it was the first anime series I actually disliked, because, while it had the most beautiful art that I'd ever seen, it was incredibly boring. I take it that the manga is better? I just remember two princess high schoolers, devils, gundam-like machines and some crazy ass good guy who gets angry and blasts bad guys back to hell.

In terms of what I'm reading, I just finished reading 'Please! Mr. Bear!' - a slice of life series. It's only 8 chapters long, but it's cute.

yeah, the manga's much better than the anime.... the endings better and the characters and storyline is pretty much completely different

slowly working through all 43 volumes of zipang, among other things. it sends me to wikipedia a few times a volume, so that slows me down a bit.

i burned out on zipang after 11 volumes, time to put it on the back burner for a while. i took up yowamushi pedal, to sate a craving for cheesey shounen manga. as far as shounen goes, this one suits me fairly well -- the art is pretty idiosyncratic, and while i think a lot of people would consider it ugly, i, for one, dig it. i guess my only real complaint is that so far the story has been hopping from race to race a bit too quickly, and so i'm hoping that it'll settle down soon and we'll see some chapters of the characters' downtime.

thermae romae, volume 2

a series that made a big splash after its first volume won an award last year. it's about a designer of public bathhouses in the roman empire, who finds himself travelling back and forth through time between ancient rome and modern-day japan. during every one of these time trips, he manages to find some sort of inspiration from the public bathhouses of japan, which he then puts to use when he returns to the time period he belongs in. so, for example, in one chapter he discovers the japanese practice of drinking flavored milk (e.g. banana milk, strawberry milk) after getting out of a bath, and so when he finds himself back in rome he starts giving out fruit-milk concoctions of his own, and it becomes a big hit.

it's prretty good, although it's important to pace yourself when reading it, i think, because surprisingly enough, ancient roman time travel thievery of bathhouse technology/culture can get old fairly quickly if you overdose on it.

well, tsubasa fukuchi's takkoku (タッコク!!!) ended. it was a rush job, no question, but at least it wasn't as sudden as law of ueki plus's ending, which was a debacle of almost yuu yuu hakusho proportions. he has burnt all his fans a second time, and yet i for one am willing to forgive him, just because it was an adorable manga while it lasted.

hoshi mamoru inu, "the dog who protects the stars"

utter sap. i imagine futabasha was looking for the next "Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms", and i'd say they found the right guy -- the sap levels are off the charts, just like town of evening calm.

but then, part of me is a sucker for some good sap, so i'm not saying i disliked the book or anything... just that, you know, i'm not proud of it.
