Matsuura Aya (24) is starring in a drama special called “Sakura to Satsuki,” scheduled to air late at night on April 1 on the local Kansai station ABC TV.

The drama was shot in the Kansai area and features an all-Kansai cast. Matsuura – who is originally from Himeji, Hyogo – will play a truck driver and former yankee named Sakura, speaking in Banshu-ben (a regional dialect of Kansai-ben). Trouble arises when she finds out that her good friend and former co-worker Satsuki (Hamaguchi Junko) is engaged to her ex-boyfriend Yuji (Hashimoto Jun).

The cast is rounded out by comedian Kobayashi Kotaro (of Choplin), Ina Kenji, Tokuda Naomi, and Oura Ai.

Matsuura will also sing in Banshu-ben for the theme song, titled “Futari Osaka,” which she wrote specifically for the show.

The official website has a trailer and will be updated with 5 “spin-off drama” episodes. Viewers can put together the Japanese characters shown at the end of each episode to form a keyword, qualifying them to enter in a lottery to win one of five 10,000 yen gift certificates. Those episodes are planned to start on the morning of March 25.

Neat little fact is this role won't be that unfamiliar to Aya, seeing as her dad is a trucker, and she has said in past interviews that she'd sometimes go with him on one of his runs, and that he'd even let her pull the cord for his truck's airhorn.

I'm hoping that they play that up and have some fun with that fact in the episodes. A "young, cute, female" truck driver isn't exactly something that one sees on a regular basis, after all.

I haven't watched the clip yet (as I'm at work), but if it's the song I'm thinking of, there was an article on Tokyograph about Aya in this special and how she "will also sing in Banshu-ben for the theme song, titled “Futari Osaka,” which she wrote specifically for the show."

If I'm remembering correctly, in some interview a year or so ago, she had mentioned was interested in writing songs too. Looks like this our first look/listen at her stuff. ^_^

Aya has sung a lot of duets with a lot of singers, and she always blends in beautifully....Aya with Maki here on a really nice Country Musume tune

I remembered, but I celebrated by listening to her music and ended up falling asleep...OH SNAP!

Nah, I shouldn't say that, she's still an awesome singer and I hope she keeps making new music (I actually really like some of her later work).

She finally updated her Twitter after two months, posting a few new photos to show she's still alive and well...

Off the market in more ways than one!!!

I had no idea she had a boyfriend, let alone one for a while now. I'm glad she's finally found love, but I'm more concerned about the possible retirement. I know I and some others have made jokes about her chosen style of music (which obviously didn't set the world on fire) but I still love hearing her sing and have hoped she would still continue that. Hopefully the official news won't be so harsh and she'll still continue work and a public presence in some capacity.
