[BREAKING] SMAP rumored to be disbanding
January 12, 2016

On January 12, a few media outlets reported that SMAP is disbanding.

According to Sponichi Annex, on the 12th, the group's 58-year-old female manager who is often described as their 'foster parent', resigned from the position of director from J Dream, Inc., a subsidiary company of Johnny's & Associates, inc., and she will also be leaving Johnny & Associates, Inc. next month.

Apparently, four members out of five; Nakai Masahiro, Inagaki Goro, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, and Katori Shingo also showed their intentions of leaving the agency with her, while Kimura Takuya decided to stay with the company.

Therefore, the media outlets reported that it could be a disbandment of the group.

This news has not only shocked the group's fans, but the entire country as well.

There is no official announcement nor any comment regarding this matter at this moment, so stay tuned for further reports.

Therefore, the media outlets reported that it could be a disbandment of the group.

On the afternoon of the 13th, Johnny's & Associates, inc. released an official statement.

The statement said, "Recently, there was a report regarding some SMAP members' leaving and their manager's resignation from a directors position. It is true that we are having consultation and negotiations about the matter, however, we cannot answer any detailed inquires yet."

Johnny’s React to SMAP Disbandment Rumor

The idols of Johnny & Associates are active in many different fields, including hosting television shows. With the rumor that SMAP had disbanded after 25 years being the big story of the day, 4 Johnny’s were put on the spot on today’s morning news shows.

TOKIO’s Kokubun Taichi hosts TBS’s “Hakunetsu Live Vivit.” When the SMAP news was brought up today, he said that he saw the newspapers this morning and was frankly surprised by the news. He continued, saying that none of the members of SMAP had said anything to him personally yet, therefore he couldn’t say anything more. There was similar gossip around the time of last year’s Kohaku Uta Gassen, but he didn’t feel it from the SMAP members, so this rumor came as a surprise to him.

TOKIO’s Yamaguchi Tatsuya is a host on Nippon TV’s “ZIP!” on Mondays and Wednesdays. The SMAP story was brought up 3 times during the show, but he did not comment on it. The news of SMAP was a constant on the show’s scrolling ticker during today’s episode.

Nagase Tomoya of TOKIO was on Fuji TV’s “Mezamashi TV” today doing promotion for his new Fuji TV drama “Fragile”, which debuts tonight. He did not speak on the SMAP rumor.

Also keeping quiet on the subject was V6’s Inohara Yoshihiko, the host of NHK’s “Asaichi.”

EDIT:
Now that it’s the evening in Japan, there is a story on what happened on the tonight’s shows. NEWS’ Koyama Keiichiro is a host of Nippon TV’s evening news show “news every.” He too expressed surprise at the news. He also expressed concern over what is going to happen next.

It was shocking to hear about it though but without the details, it made little sense.

Still more in shock than anything else but I wonder how deep of a rift they got to the point of this.  Really more questions than answers at this point in time :nervous

SMAP members talk about recent troubles on live 'SMAP×SMAP' appearance
January 18, 2016

On January 18, SMAP members made a live appearance on their Fuji TV program "SMAP×SMAP" and talked about recent trouble.

First of all, Kimura Takuya started with, "It is January 18th 2016 today. We have caused a public uproar since last week about us, SMAP, and we gave worries to so many people. If things kept going, I was afraid that SMAP could break up in midair, so we thought it was important for five of us together to explain to everyone. Therefore, we received this opportunity."

Then each members followed:

- Inagaki Goro
"I'm sorry for causing troubles about us. I hope you see us from now on, and would like to receive support from you, so we will do our best. Please continue to support us."

- Katori Shingo
"I apologize for making so many people worried and anxious. Starting today, I hope we can make many smiles with you again, so please support us."

- Nakai Masahiro
"Because of this, it made me strongly realize once again how much SMAP is receiving supports from you. I deeply apologize. Please continue to support us."

- Kusanagi Tsuyoshi
"I noticed so many things because of the words from you. I am really grateful. We are standing right here, since Kimura-kun gave us an opportunity to apologize to Johnny-san. I am relieved to be able to stay here with all five of us together."

At the end, Kimura said, "Lastly, we will keep going forward...just by looking forward, no matter what happens, so everyone, please support us."

It seems like SMAP's disbandment has been avoided.

Honestly speaking, considering the translations that were provided of the individual statements that each of them made, one can't help but wonder (or at least, I can't help but wonder) if Nakai, Goro, Kusanagi and Katori really did change their minds of their own choosing, or if they were somehow bullied/coerced/forced into withdrawing their resignations (and that's assuming of course, that they really were planning of leaving Johnny's to begin with).

I guess there was a bit of a side effect caused by the recent SMAP drama.

SMAP's single from 2003 'Sekai ni Hitotsu dake no Hana' back on No.3 on Oricon's latest weekly ranking
January 27, 2016

Popular group SMAP's "Sekai ni Hitotsu dake no Hana (single version)", released in March 2003, sold 47,000 copies this week. It ranked in at No.3 on Oricon's latest weekly single ranking.

The accumulated sales of the song is now 2,630,000 copies.

When there was a report about SMAP's splitting up/disbanding on January 13, their fans mounted a campaign for buying the song, aiming for a triple million sales, to deter the group's disbandment.

The single charted at 9th place on the daily ranking for January 14, but as it is a single from over 10 years ago, it was out of stock, which gave it the 75th place on the previous weekly ranking.

Even after the week, "Sekai ni Hitotsu dake no Hana" continued increasing its sales, and for the latest weekly chart, it came back on No.3 spot after 12 years.

Not only the song, five other singles also charted in the top 100, and "Smap Vest" (released in March 2001) was also at the 17th place on the latest weekly album ranking.

Looks like it's done...as in...SMAP's done.

TokyoHive.com - Johnny & Associates officially announce SMAP's disbandment
Quote
Below is the whole announcement from the company.

=====
Regarding 'SMAP's future activities as a group

Thank you always for your support for SMAP.

We have been worrying everyone about SMAP's future activities, and now we would like to report on the conclusion which was made after the consulting with the members multiple times.

SMAP who have been doing their group activities as artists for 25 years since their debut, will be disbanding after December 31, 2016.

After receiving the members' intentions to stay in the company and continue their group activities, back in January of this year, our whole company has been preparing in many ways to support SMAP. Starting in February to August 10, we have spent over 6 months in meetings with each member individually and all the members together, proposing them for usual appearances on music shows, holding live concerts and commemorative events for the 20th anniversary of their TV show, as well as the 25th anniversary since their CD debut. However, during the consultations, some members told us 'it is difficult to continue as a group with the members' current situations', which caused the group's non-appearances on the music shows during July.

In August, we suggested them to take a break as a group in order to have some time to think it all until the whole situation settles in a positive way, for the sake of people who are waiting. But some of the members preferred 'disbanding rather than taking a break.'  Though it was a tough decision, with respect towards them who have kept running until now, we thought that it is difficult to continue as a group if some members are wishing to disband.

We feel terrible for our inadequacy not to be able to meet the support and expectations of the fans who were eagerly looking forward to the 25th-anniversary concerts and event. Please accept our apology.

Even though SMAP is disbanding after this year, all of them will continue staying with the company, and each one will do their best in solo activities, so we would like to ask you for your continuous support just like now.

We will greatly appreciate your further guidance and encouragement.

TokyoHive.com - SMAP members release statements on their disbandment
Quote
- Nakai Masahiro
"To the fans and people concerned, please allow us to announce that we, SMAP, will be disbanding. I'm so sorry to have troubled and worried you. I thank you for all of your support for us over the years. Please forgive us for coming up with this kind of conclusion. I am really sorry..."

- Kimura Takuya
"About this 'group's disbandment', I am honestly regretful. But for the 25th anniversary live or our group activities, there is nothing I can do if five of us aren't together, so all I can do now is to understand. Ignoring the feelings of the fans who supported us a lot, and the staff members, it ended up with such a deplorable conclusion as 'disbandment.' I do not know what to say now."

-  Inagaki Goro
"To the fans and the staffs, I am truly sorry to have troubled and worried you. We thought that it was difficult to continue our group activities in our current situation, so we have decided to 'disband' though it was a tough decision. I hope you understand our intentions. Thank you very much for the past 28 years."

- Kusanagi Tsuyoshi
"We, SMAP, have chosen the path to disband. To the fans who have always cheered for us, and the related parties who have supported us, thank you very much for the 28 years since the formation of the group. We will continue devoting ourselves, so I will be happy if you watch us over warmly."

- Katori Shingo
"To the fans and the staff members, we, SMAP, are disbanding. I sincerely would like to give my gratitude for many people who supported us, and also I am deeply sorry for this sudden announcement."
