Even after at least hundreds of posts on digg.com, even after a Slashdot article there’s thousands of people out there complaining about the Firefox Memory Bug. Lets get it straight. It’s not a bug. It’s part of the cache feature. This ‘feature’ is how the pages are cached in a tabbed environment. To improve performance when navigating (studies show that 39% of all page navigations are renavigations to pages visited less than 10 pages ago, usually using the back button), Firefox 1.5 implements a Back-Forward cache that retains the rendered document for the last five session history entries for each tab. This is a lot of data. If you have a lot of tabs, Firefox’s memory usage can climb dramatically. It’s a trade-off. What you get out of it is faster performance as you navigate the web.

ok, i only copy paste this so firefox users can rejoice.. i'm having this too and this solution really help.. give it a try..

Hope this works.... Firefox consumes 700MB of RAM on my 1.5GB machine

hm....compare to other browser engine...i prefer firefox when do the tabbing...firefox never consumes a lot of memory...never exceed 100mb of memory when i open more than 10 tabs...but when i use netscape...damn my pc can hang....use internet explorer i got errors all the time...a close box will appear to choose whether to "end now" or cancel

Givin' it a shot. I've always noticed that firefox, more than anything I typically run, takes up the most memory. Thanks for the post.

firefox is still ok but IE7 is even worst than firefox took alot n i mean alot of memory.

I already use the config.trim_on_minimize = true setting which makes Firefox free up some of the memory it was holding on to when you minimize it. I'm not sure if I've done the others, but I'll check them out. Thanks for the tip.

I looked at the memory usage of both firefox and IE(6.0 and 7.0) and there really isn't much difference that it would affect using other programs(besides some games). I find using the fasterfox extension greatly increases memory usage though.
