The Jazz Thread
« on: November 26, 2009, 05:28:34 PM »
So it turns out we don't have one. Which is just sad, dammit.

Lately I've been quite into vocal jazz, of the female kind. And my listening habits have been dominated by one name, Akiko:

Akiko - I Miss You
akiko - Love Theme From Spartacus

Great voice, quite a nice variety in terms of what she covers, and most importantly, not sleep inducing. I'm looking at you, Ann Sally!

Of course, I love 'normal' jazz as well. Despite playing guitar, I'm more fond of jazz when it's played on brass, or a piano. Kind of Blue is probably my all time favourite album. It was one of the first Davis albums I'd ever heard, and definitely more accessible than Bitches' Brew. Mingus Ah Um was also pretty awesome.

So who are your favourite jazz artists? What's your favourite genre fork of jazz? Do you take Wynton Marsalis' side on the quintessential fusion jazz debate? Do you think Charles Mingus is deeply underappreciated? Do you have a secret longing for elevator jazz? Share your thoughts!

good thread mal! i've been diggin' some jazz for awhile now. i don't think i have a favorite type of jazz, but i have been listening to the older 40's/ 50's or whatever jazz, like ella fitzgerald & frank sinatra lately. jazz is definitely the essence of cool. most of the music genre i've listened to that has some jazz in it have usually been good to my ears.

this is not the typical jazz, but it's worth listening.

Getting away from it a bit, but I like jazz fusion and those types of things.

As for normal straight up jazz, I was into Dave Brubeck Quartet for a bit.
Dave Brubeck - Take Five - 1966

For Japanese artists, I've all been about Hiromi Uehara. Posted her stuff on the instrumental thread, too.
Hiromi Uehara - I've got Rhythm
And more recently, Jabberloop and their club jazzy goodness.

I feel disappointed that I didn't know this lady before - Caro Emerald. She debuted last year in July, I believe. Love the singing and the instrumental.

is this thread only for the 'pure' miles davis type jazz, or does jazz fusion count?

if jazz fusion counts, then i recommend weather report and john mclaughlin  :twothumbs

if not then lol @ me and miles is king (herbie hancock at one time was in his band - miles was supposedly a motherfucker)  :O
