Today started like usual. I woke up, ate my breakfast, and went to the university. Everything went smoothly until that happened. I never thought that something will happen to me that night.
Something that brought major changes in my life…

I quicken my pace as I take a look on my watch. It’s almost 10PM. It’s not that late yet, but the heavy rain that poured down since the evening made the street almost void of human.
‘Mou…if only I hadn’t been too occupied with the books in the library, I won’t end up like this.’ I thought as I shivered under the heavy pour.
I reached an intersection and immediately headed right to my apartment. As I walked, I saw something near the apartment’s front gate.
It was a puppy, sprawled on the cold pavement.
‘Is it dead?’ As I questioned, I notice the slow movement on its chest.
My apartment didn’t allow animals, but I just can’t leave it there. ‘I’ll just need to be extra careful when I take the puppy home then.’
I lifted the puppy and carried it to my place. Luckily I didn’t meet anyone on my way.
As I bathed the puppy, I noticed the black collar and tag around its neck. The metal tag has a kanji words carved on its surface.
“Jurina…” I muttered as I traced the cold metal tag.

Project J - chapter 1. Hi, Jurina! My name is Matsui Rena. And stop biting my finger!
The bird chirping loudly as a new day began. The sun rays start to invade the room of a certain someone through the curtain, waking her up slowly.
Feeling the warmth of the sun rays, she started to open her eyes slowly, but still refusing to wake up fully. It's Saturday after all. No class. A day to enjoy yourselves. It's okay to be lazy once in a while, right? Why she have to wake up so early, anyway? The girl started to falling asleep again for the nth times in the morning...until her phone started ringing, and she has to force herself up.
Picking her phone, she checked the caller id and answered the call, "Hello Churi, what's up in the morning?"
"Morning? It's already past 10, Rena. It's not like you to wake up so late..."
That's right. It's so unRena-like to wake up so late. But then again, yesterday is not the usual day For the girl.
She spent all day in the library working her report, and went home under a heavy rain. She picked up an unconsious puppy from the street, checking the puppy to make sure there's no injury, bathed and wipe the puppy dry, even tucked the little one under a towel to keep it warm in the night. And she has to clean herself before she go to bed. It was quite a long day.
"Anyway, how about the karaoke in the afternoon? We can have a lunch before, and having fun afterwards! The others are coming too!" The girl on the other line speak excitedly.
"Ahh, right...karaoke." Akane did invite her yesterday, and she said to Akane that she'll consinder and giver her the answer in the morning. "Ye-"
A sneeze.
A cute little sneeze from the brown bundle of fur near her bed is enough to cut the girl from answering her friend.
Smiling at the puppy who still sleep soundly, the girl made up her mind, "Sorry Churi, I just remembered that I have something to do today. Maybe next time?"
"Ahh, Airin will be disappointed. Okay then, see you later! Bye, Rena!"
"Bye." And the line went dead.
Placing her phone on the bed, she stand and stretching herself. After some stretching she walked to where the puppy rest and lower herself. She patted the puppy head and earned some twitch here and there even though it's still sleeping.
She chuckled and headed to the bathroom. Today's schedule already been formulated in her head.

'Vegetables, fish fillets, and some fruits, enough to last me a week.' She rechekced her grocery list once again as she walked on the supermarket. 'Ah, milk too.' She added a carton of milkto her cart. After a second thought, she added another one for a certain puppy.
She also walked to pet food section and grabbed a dog food for her little companion back home.
Lastly, she went to bakery sections to supply her beloved melonpan.
'It's perfect.' She smiled to herself.

Back to her apartment, she found that the puppy still sleeping. She frowned a little, 'Is it normal for a puppy to sleep that long?'
She unpacked her grocery and start stuffing her refrigerator before she checked the puppy.
The girl poured some dog food into a plastic plate and brought it to the puppy. She placed the plate near the puppy and started to wake the puppy up.
After a few shake and a poke here and there, the puppy woke and let a big yawn.
As it realized that there's a stranger nearby, the puppy quickly backed away and started to barking angrily toward the girl.
"Ssh! Ssh! Stop barking! You'll start an unwanted commotion!" The girl said worriedly and placed her index finger in front of her mouth to emphasize her sentence.
It seemed that the puppy understand what she meant and stopped barking, and resorted to a low growling. The puppy still didn't trust its new company yet.
"Um..." The girl mumbled as she tried to reach the puppy, but everytime she backed away because the puppy tried to clawing her hand.
"Okay, sure. I understand. I won't try to touch you again. But listen to me, I mean no harm to you." The girl gave up and stand up, leaving the puppy. "Oh, and try to eat something to recover your energy."
The girl went back to her sofa in the living room and picked a manga in her hand and took a melonpan with her other hand. As she skipped few pages, she stole a glance to the puppy through the bedroom door that was left ajar.
The puppy walked around the plate, examining its content with a poke and sniffing around. After a lick, the puppy tried to bite one and spat it immediately, scattering some of the dog food on the floor.
"Hey!"
The puppy shocked at the shout and stare at the girl in the living room. Yet its focus quickly change to the item that's located a bit lower from the girl's mouth.
Feeling the stare from the puppy, the girl also looked down. And she saw her melonpan.
Looking back and forth from the puppy and her melonpan, she swore she saw a drool escaping the puppy's mouth.
The girl got up and walked to the puppy as it backed away slowly, its eyes never leaving the melonpan.
"You want some?" She took a chunk from her melonpan and wave it in front of the puppy before throwing it to the plate and backed away slowly. She didn't want to dirtying the floor more that it was already.
The puppy licked the chunk of melonpan several time before wolfing it down while wagging its tail. It made the girl amused.
'Even a dog likes it huh. It truly such a wonderful food.'
"Arf!"
The girl give her attention back to the puppy. "You want more?"
"Arf!"
The girl take another chunk and wave it to the puppy. "Sure, but this time you have to take it yourself."
The puppy hesitated a little, but still it went to the girl to take its reward. Almost biting her finger in the process.
After that, the girl playfully offer a chunk by a chunk to the puppy. Sometimes she made the puppy jump to reach the chunk or ate it herself after tempting the puppy.
The last chunk was given normally after she satisfied playing with the puppy.
"See? I'm a friend. Don't be afraid," the girl said to the puppy that was still busy licking the girls finger and sometimes biting it playfully.
"Now, Jurina." The girl said asking an attention from the puppy.
"Arf!"
"My name's Matsui Rena. Let's be friend from now on." The girl said. "And stop biting my finger. It's not a chew toy."
The last sentence was ignored by the puppy who still treat the girls finger as one.

It was lunch break on Monday. Like usual Rena sat with her friends when they had lunch together at the campus's outdoor foodcourt, but today they have one more companion.
"Hmm isn't she a golden retirever?" Kumi, one of Rena's friend mused.
"No way, her ears are pointy, golden has droopy ears." Kanon argued, pointing at Jurina's ears.
"She looks like a fox..." Airin leaned closer to take a better look at Jurina, but backed immediately when Jurina tried to lick her face. "And I think she's a little too friendly even with strangers."
"Who cares, she's soooooooooo cuteeee~!" Akane hugged Jurina and received some happy barks and few licks from the puppy.
Akane was fawning over Jurina since Rena decided to bring her to the university. Keeping Jurina alone in her apartment was too dangerous. Random barking in the day when Rena's not home can lead to suspiciousness and has a very high probability for her to be kicked out from the apartment.
Fortunately as usual there were few wild cats and dogs walking around their campus's outdoor foodcourt. One extra puppy wouldn't be noticed, or so she hoped.
"Nee, nee, I think it's time to go back to the theater, our lunch time's over." Kumi called and gathered all her things that was scattered on the table. The other also followed suit.
The girls walked to the theater with Jurina following them from behind. When they arrived at the front door, Rena turned around,"Jurina, listen. You can't go inside with me. Wait here until I come back to get you, understand?"
"Arf!" The puppy gave a bark and sat at the side of the front door wagging its tail.
"Good girl." Rena gave the puppy a little pat on its head and walked inside with her friends.
"Arf! Arf!"

As they walked on the corridor, from afar they saw a mass of other student standing in the other side. Low murmurs can be heard even from the distance.
"Has the casts been announced? Let's go take a look, Non-chan!" Kumi grabbed Kanon's hand and dragged her to the crowds. Rena, Akane, and Airi also quickened their pace.
It's the result of the audition for a musical. The musical will be played in their campus's anniversary. There'll be a lot of directors and higher ups from the entertainment industry attending the play to search for a young talent. It's a stage where everybody will try their hardest to be acknowledged by the scouts.
There's an uneasy feeling in Rena's guts, it's increased with every step she took towards the announcement board.
As she nearing the boards, the mumurs stopped suddenly. Everyone were staring at her with...what's that? Concerns? Pity?
She looked on the boards and finally understand what's going on there. Her name were not on the list.
She, Matsui Rena, the star pupil, known as one of the best actress from her year, is not selected for the play.
It hurts. Even though she knew it's inevitable. She remembered what their head of department had said during the audition. 'This musical isn't only about acting skills, it'll also require an intense dancing and singing skills.'
She knew that's her dancing and singing skills isn't as good as her acting skills. She knew that with her current capability it's reasonable for not being listed in a musical plays.
But it still hurts, when your hopes being crushed, and you have to swallow the bitter truth.
"Gomen, I think I forgot something." Her voice shaken, as she abruptly left the theater.
Airi was ready to follow her, but Akane grabbed her wrist, stopping her. Shaking her head, Akane gave Airi a solemn look, "I think it's best to leave her alone at the moment..."

Rena sat on a bench in the garden on her campus's ground. Because it's past lunch break time, the place was quiet. Most of the students was already in the building for class or other places. It was a perfect place to relax and clear her thoughts.
"Arf! Arf!"
Rena looked down and saw Jurina nuzzling her leg, asking her attention.
'Did she followed me here?'
The puppy was following Rena since she left the theater building. Her barks was left unanswered, and she followed suit until the girl settled on the bench.
She realized something was off about the girl. She seemed down.
"Arf! Arf!" Jurina tried again, this time licking and pawing Rena's leg.
"Ne, Jurina?" Finally, a respond! The puppy perked up. "Arf!"
"Can you leave me alone for awhile?" Rena said, closing her eyes.
"Arf..." The puppy quitened down, its ears dropped after being scolded by the girl.
After few minutes walking around the bench, the puppy raised its head, as if remembering something and scampered off. The girl was left alone at the garden, gazing at the sky.
Time flies as the girl sort her thoughts. She didn't even remember how long she sat at the garden. But since the sky starting to change its colors to orange, she figured she spent quite a time in the garden.
As she stretched, she suddenly remembered her companion, or the lack of.
"...Jurina?"
The girl searched for her puppy near the garden and found nothing. Just when she started to give up, she saw the puppy running towards her.
The puppy was dirtied by dirts and all, but what took her interest is what the puppy brought for her. The girls crouched down to take a better look, and she saw several stem of small white flower.
"Arf! Arf!" The puppy run around the girl and gave several licks to the girls hand as she took the flowers.
"What? Are you trying to cheer me up?" The girl giggled softly.
"Arf! Arf!" The puppy sit down and wags her tail. Affirmative.
"Mou what were you doing until you got all these dirt on you." Rena pouted a little but soon it was replaced by a smile. "Let's go home, Jurina. We'll have to clean you again."
"Arf!"
Rena stood up and walked home along with Jurina followed her from behind.
"Oh, and Jurina, please try to keep quiet when we enter the apartment."
------
The day ended peacefully. They manage to sneak into the apartment without any accident.
Rena started to bathe Jurina immediately after they arrived so the puppy wouldn't leave any stain on her apartment. After the puppy was all clean, the girl started to cook dinner. She even prepared extra meal for the puppy due to her aversion over dog foods.
The dinner also went smoothly.
It's when Rena prepares to go to the bed, the pang of disappointment started to fill her guts again.
She frowned and plan to sleep it off. But it didn't worked.
A single tear slid off her procleain skin.
Then a warm lick that wipe the tear...huh?
The girl opened her eyes and saw the puppy sitting in her bed. Nuzzling the girl's cheek, the puppy yawned and secured herself a comfortable place in the girl's bed.
Smiling for the affection she received, the girl kissed the top of the puppy's head and whispered, "Good night, Jurina."

As the night continued on, and they're unaware of the danger looming nearby.
Two girls dressed in black stepped out of a car at the city's outskirts. The taller one took a deep breath and took off her glasses, gazing at the city.
"I can feel her presence nearby, Minami. No. 09 is in this city."
Hearing her companion words, the other girl chuckled. "Saa, shall we start the hunt now?"
The shorter girl with ponytail smirked to her companion.
"Atsuko."
------
Morning came, but Rena has a hard time to wake up. Especially with the warmth that embraced her, a fresh scent that made her so relaxed, and these smooth skin that...wait, what?
Rena quickly opened her eyes and as soon as she perceive the sight, she immediately panicked. She hope it's just a dream, or a prank, or whatever.
HOW COME THERE'S AN UNKNOWN GIRL SLEPT ON HER BED??!!
And if her hands, or what her hands felt's right, it's not only a girl, but a naked one.
She wanted to scream, but her voice failed her. She wanted to think to find a good reasoning, but her minds already going haywire.
"Mmhm~"
Rena froze.
The unknown girl nuzzled on her neck before opening her eyes and offered Rena a smile. A smile that made Rena's heart went bungee jumping on its own.
"Good morning Rena-chan. Chuu~" The girl stole a kiss on her cheek.
That kiss finally dragged Rena back from Heaven and reacted to the girl's advance. She shoved the girls to her bed and immediately jumped off her bed, trying to have some distance.
"W-who are you?!"
The unknown girl just smiled. She played a little with a tag on her collar before answering Rena.
"Me? I'm Jurina."

"I'm Jurina."
The naked girl smiled innocently. As if nothing has happened. She didn't even try to...um, cover her body.
Rena has a hard time to keep her face color stayed normal. It went red and redder as the seconds passed by. She tried to keep her gaze everywhere but the naked girl on her bed, but it seemed futile. Every small gesture the naked girl made caught Rena eyes. So she brace herself and stare right to the girl.
Above her neck of course.
"Um, ano...do you mind to...cover your...body...please?" Rena stuttered. Being a good girl she is, she even gestured her blanket on the bed with her trembling hand.
The girl just smiled and tilted her head, "Why? Rena-chan doesn't like to see my body?"
'OH. MAI. GAWD.' Rena facepalmed mentally.
Did she just hear what she thought she had heard?! If she didn't know better, she'd said the girl saying that sentence on purpose. Is she trying to embarass her to death?! Or did she tried to seduce her for real?!
Rena has given up to try to reason with the girl. Instead, she went to her drawer, took some loose shirt and shorts, and threw them to the bed.
"Please, just wear them. And we'll talk later." The other girl said, and walked out from her bedroom try to clean her mind.

"Rena-chan~ I'm done! You can go into the bedroom now~"
Hearing the shout, Rena sighed and went to her bedroom. Inside, she found Jurina seated on her bed cuddling her pillow. Smiling like always.
Rena closed the door and stood firmly in front of it. Her gaze never left the smiling girl sitting in front of her.
"So..." Rena started, taking the other girl's attention. "Who are you?"
The girl frowned.
"I'm Jurina. Rena-chan, why are you doubting me?" The girl stood up and pinned Rena to the wall. The sudden movement startled and scared the older girl.
"Look." Jurina took Rena's hand and place it on her collar, and move it slowly to the metal tag. The girl made Rena feel the engraved kanji with her fingers.
"I'm Jurina. Do you believe me now?" Jurina finished with her charming smile.
Rena abruptly pushed Jurina off. Her face was tainted red. "A-a-are you trying to say that you changed from a puppy to a human in one night? What are you? Demon?? Alien??"
"Pfft. Are you serious??" Jurina tried to hold her giggle. "You're watching tv too much, Rena-chan."
Rena gave the other girl a glare. "So? What are you?"
Jurina walked closer to the older girl, smiling michievously. "Like I said. I'm Jurina."
'Gah! This is getting nowhere!'
"Okay, I got it. You don't want to answer me." Rena moved away giving more space from herself to Jurina.
"So Jurina. What are you going to do after this?" Rena asked again. This time the other girl tilted her head and stayed silent for awhile.
"Hmmm...ah!" Jurina face brightened instantly. "I want to see the world! Can you show me around, Rena-chan?"
"What?!" Rena gave Jurina a weirded look. "Are you trying to say that you're going to follow me around everyday?"
"Can't I?" Jurina's face fell. "Am I a bother to Rena-chan?"
Pleading eyes.
'THAT'S CHEATING! THOSE PUPPY EYES!!' Rena screamed on her head.
"Well...it's not loke you're a bother, but--"
Before Rena finished her sentence, Jurina jumped and hugged Rena tightly, nuzzling her neck. "I love you, Rena-chan~!"
Startled, Rena shoved Jurina away. The action seemed to hurt the younger girl feeling, and the older girl felt guilty immediately after she saw the crestfallen face.
"W-why are you always so touchy-feely me?" Rena blushed as she use her hand to cover her front.
"You didn't bothered at all when I did it before." Jurina pouted.
"We-well! I-it's because you're a pu-puppy!" Rena stuttered as she trying to calm her rollercoasting hearbeat.
"Is that so? So if it's a puppy you wouldn't be bothered?" Jurina asked but didn't received an answer from Rena.
"Then so be it."
Rena just stared as she saw the transformation. She saw the other girl's bone went cracking, and moving to unnatural place. Brown and white fur started to grow on the girl's white milky skin. Hands and legs transformed into paws, nose and mouth into muzzle.
Rena's eyes grew wider as the second passes by, until the girl in front of her fully changed into a certain puppy she knew.
"Arf!"
Rena felt her legs went into jelly and she collapsed on the floor. This is just too much for a normal girl like her. Heck, it's not an everyday occurence to meet with a puppy that can transform into human.
Jurina took that opportunity to hop into Rena's lap and nuzzling and licking her -again-.
"Arf! Arf!"
"So...you...Jurina...you really are..."
Jurina put her paws on Rena's chest so she can have a better look to the other girl.
"Arf! Arf!"

The bell sound woke Rena from her trance. She immediately went to her front door and opened it. But she never expected to meet the person who's standing in front of her door now.

Since Rena didn't give any response to her, Jurina was worried and followed Rena to the front door.
Then Jurina saw Rena and another middle-aged man in an uniform. The middle aged man saw Jurina and his expression turned into a frown.
"Matsui-san. I got reports from the other resident that they heard barks from your place. I told them it was just their imagination, but to think that you actually have a dog here..." He sighed and looked back to Rena.
"I'm really sorry, sir." Rena apologized and bowed.
"Well, you know the rules here." The man looked at Jurina again,"Please find another place for your dog by today. Else, I'll have to report you to the management, and we both don't want that to happen."
"Yes, sir. Again, I'm really sorry for the trouble." Rena bowed once again.
As the man left, Rena closed her door and slumped to the floor.
'Great. Another problem.'
"Arf?" Jurina went to Rena's side and looked at the other girl. She looked miserable.
Jurina pawed Rena's leg, tried to earn her attention.
Rena glared, "Mou, now it's either I kicked you out or we both get kicked out from the apartment."
"Arf..." The puppy dropped its ears and looked away.
"Then again why did you get out in your puppy form, Jurina?" Rena sulked. "You knew that pet is prohibited in this apartment--that's it!"
"Arf?" The puppy tilted its head.
"I got it! Ah...why didn't I think about it before? You just have to hide your puppy form and stayed in your human form when we're in or around the apartment!" Rena said excitedly.
The puppy backed away immediately when she heard Rena's suggestion, shaking her head.
"Why not? Jurina! It's for your own sake!"
Jurina hesitated, but she still refused.
Aggravated, Rena tried another approach. "Would you rather like me being kicked out? Jurina!"
Finally the puppy gave up and transformed back into her human form.
"But I have one condition if I have to stayed in this form."
"Anything. Make it quick." Rena replied quickly, somehow glad at least she didn't have to worry about being kicked out at the moment. She'll deal with the puppy later. Now she need to hurry or she'll be late.
"I can hug Rena-chan whenever I want in this form~"
The sentence made Rena regretted her words immediately.

At the campus ground, a girl was watching her watch while tapping her foot on the ground repeatedly.
"Mou! Why Rena's so late? We'll not make it if she didn't appear soon!" Churi gritted her teeth.
"Maa, then why don't you just go and wait inside?" Airin answered.
"And how about you?"
"I'll be waiting here of course."
Churi pouted. "Then no."
Fortunately Rena's appeared few minutes later. With an additional person which Churi and Airin didn't know.
"Churi, Airin! Gomen, I'm late. I need to take care of something first this morning." Rena said as she caught her breath after running a little. Physical strength is definitely not her forte.
"So, Rena, mind to introduce us to your friend?" Churi started mentioning the girl who's hugging Rena's arm. That person looked charming with her rather boyish but still beautiful appearance.
"Ah...right. Sorry, um..." Rena forgot to make a scenario about Jurina's background. She needed to whip something up. Fast. "Um, she's--"
"I'm Jurina! It's great finally we're able to communicate, Churi! Airin!" Jurina butted in, Rena dropped her jaw.
Churi and Airin looked to Rena with confused look. Rena just smiled awkwardly.
"Um...so your name is also Jurina? Such a coincidence that your name is the same with a puppy Rena has..." Airin tried to smile, but her eyes showed some doubt.
"Actually, Jurina is my cousin!" Rena shouted suddenly.
"Cousin?" Churi and Airin asked simultaneously.
"Um, yes. Actually she's from Tokyo. She planned to attend here after she finished high school. Therefore for awhile she'll be living with me while she looking around our university." Rena blabbered, "And about the name...um, right, since child Jurina always cling to me and she liked to act like a puppy...so when I picked the puppy, I named her after Jurina absentmindedly. Hehe..."
'Great work, dear brain! I hope it sounds believable.' Rena mused.
Hearing Rena's words, Churi and Airin looked Jurina for some confirmation.
"Yup~." Jurina answered as she sneaked her arms around Rena's waist and hugging Her from behind, she placed her face above Rena's shoulder.
"Woah, really. You two must be very close! It's a rare sight to see Rena accepted some skinship." Churi giggled and made Rena blushed.
"And both Jurinas seems have a very affectionate nature towards you, Rena-san." Airin added with a forced smile.
'If only you knew...' Rena thought.
RRIINGG!
"We'll be late if we don't hurry up!" Churi exclaimed. "Eh, how about Jurina?"
"Don't worry. I'll be fine. Rena-chan already taught me about places I can go and I can't in the campus ground." Jurina smiled proudly.
"Jurina, be a good girl. Remember, don't make any trouble while I'm away. Don't go with any strangers. Don't receive any gift from a suspicious person. Don't--" Rena reminded Jurina again and again.
Churi rolled her eyes and grabbed Rena's wrist and started to walked away. "Come on...She's not a child, Rena. She'll be fine."
Hearing Churi words, Rena casted a worried glance to Jurina. Jurina just smiled reassuringly and waved her hand.
"Un, I'll be fine,Rena-chan! See you after class~"

Rena couldn't focus to her lesson at all. Her mind kept worried about a certain puppy, she hoped Jurina didn't involved in any problem out there.
RRRIIINNGG!
Hearing the bell, Rena quickly gathered her things and walked out immediately.
When she arrived outside, she saw Jurina waited near the entrance of the building.
"Rena-chan~" Jurina quickly approached Rena. "I didn't get into any trouble, don't worry."
"Good girl." Rena smiled and patted Jurina's head, making the younger girl grinned even more.
"Whoa, you're right Churi! Rena's different when she's with her cousin. I rarely saw her being affectionate with anyone, even with us! She's just too reserved--oww!" Kuumin almost bit her tongue hen Kanon smacked her head. "It's hurt! What's that for, Non-chan?"
"That's rude, Kuumin." Kanon sighed and walked towards Jurina.
"I'm Kimoto Kanon. Nice to meet you." Kanon shook Jurina's hand. Kanon pointed to her partner, "And she's Yagami Kumi. I apologize for her rude comment just now."
Kumi nodded her head when Kanon mentioned her name.
"It's okay! My name's Jurina, nice too meet you, Kuumin, Non-chan!" Jurina flashed her charming smile, stunning the girls around her.
"Ne, ne, Churi! Can we invite Jurina too?" Kanon asked Churi excitedly.
"Of course. The more the merrier."
"What? Where?" Rena surprised, she didn't know they plan to go somewhere.
"Ah that's right. I forgot to tell you Rena-san. We planned to go to the beach this weekend. W-would you like to come as well?" Airin stutterd at her last sentence.
"That sounds fun! Let's go, Rena-chan!! I want to see the sea!" Jurina answered excitedly hugging Rena's arm.
"You really want to go?" Rena raised her eyebrows, and Jurina gave a vigorous nod as her answer.
Rena smirked, finally she can have a bargaining with Jurina. "I need to ask her parents permission first. I'll let you know soon, guys."
Jurina frowned.
"I see. Ok, then. Please let me know by tomorrow Rena." Churi said.
"Sure. Ja, minna. See you tomorrow." Rena bid her friends farewell and walked home.
Jurina followed suit with the frown still plastered on her face.

"Nee, Rena-chaan... What do you mean by asking my parents permission first?" Jurina whined when they arrived in Rena's place.
Rena place her bag on the table and sat on the couch in the living room. Jurina also flopped down beside her.
"If you really want to go to the beach...Why don't you answer some of my questions first?" Rena stare at the other girl, her face dead serious.
"Rena-chan, that's not fair! Are you trying to blackmail me?" Jurina shocked with Rena's course of action.
"If I have to." Rena smiled sweetly. Oh, she'd make sure Jurima will spill some beans now. "Or we can always forget the beach."
"That's dirty Rena-chan, but fine! I'll answer you! In exchange, Rena-chan should answer my question about herself too!" Jurina pointed her finger to the other girl.
"Deal. Let's start. Where are you from?"
"Actually I am from Tokyo. My turn, what do you like, Rena-chan?"
"I like melonpan. Next question, what were you doing that night until you collapsed on the strreet?"
"I was...running. And then the weather went bad, rain started pouring down. I was hungry and cold, and before I know I fainted. When I awake I was here." Jurina finished with small smile. "Umm, what's your hobby?"
"Reading manga. Back to you, by running, did you mean running away? From who?"
"Rena-chan, that's 2 questions!."
"It's fine, I'll answer your next 2 questions in a row."
"I...yes, I was running away. But I can't answer the other question, Rena-chan." Jurina answered in small voice. It seems she was bothered by something.
"Does it related to your shapeshifting ability?"
"Rena-chan, let's stop." Jurina said as she remembered those times. Hugging herself, Jurina felt her body trembling slighlty.
Rena understood the urgency in Jurina's words, she decided not to pressed further. The younger girl looked like she wanted to cry.
"I'll prepare dinner." Rena stood up, "And tomorrow we'll have to buy you some clothes for the beach trip."
Hearing her words, Jurina perked up immediately. "Really, Rena-chan?"
"Did you change your mind about wanting to see the sea?" Rena raised her eyebrows, her face calm, but inside she smiled when she can erase the younger girl's worry.
"Rena-chan, you're the best! I love you! Chuuuu~" Jurina hugged the older girl tightly and kissed her cheek.
"Mou Jurina, stop it!"

That night Rena was fast asleep when she felt a certain someone crawling into her bed. Opening her eyes, she saw Jurina's apologetic smile.
"Jurina, what are you doing?" Rena asked. She had prepared a guest room for Jurina, but it seemed her works was futile.
"Gomen, Rena-chan. I can't sleep alone. Can we sleep together?"
Too tired to answer, she just nodded and went back to sleep after she turned herself to the left to give Jurina more space.
In her semi-conscious state, Rena felt a hand snaked to her waist and a warm body hugging her from behind.
"Thank you for everything, Rena-chan."

"Yaaaaaayyy beach!!" Kuumin ran towards the sea, not far behind her, Kanon and Jurina followed. As the high-spirited youngsters ran on their own, the other's who more reserved just walked slowly from their inn.
The beach located at the city's outskirts. The place is not as fancy and crowded as the city, it was surrounded by nature, and most of the house and building's an old one. It gave off a viillage-y vibe.
It's a good thing that their inn is just on the opposite of the road and have a good view of the sea. The beach itself isn't that big nor famous, but the place was clean and quiet. A good place to relaxing.
The sky was clear, gentle breeze blowed on the seashore. A beach umberella shielded her from the sun as she laid on a beach chair reading a book.
"Nee Rena..."
"Hm?" Rena shifted her gaze to the left and saw Churi who's applying the sunscreen lotion on herself.
"You went to the beach and you only bring books with you?" Churi raised her eyebrow, she stared at her friend and a book that was rested on her lap.
"Well, I came here to relaxing. And besides," Rena stopped for a moment and point at the happy-three-girls-splashing-water-on-each-other. "I don't like physical activity as much as them."
"At least you should show off your bikini, you have a great body afterall. I'm sure people will appreciate it." Churi giggled and casted a sly smile on both Rena and Airin. Good thing Rena was facing churi, least she'll saw tomato-face Airin on her side.
"Mou Churi~! Stop teasing me!" Rena whined and slapped Churi's arm playfully.
"Hai, hai. You two have fun with your books here." Churi winked and ran off to join the other three.
"Eh? Airin? You're not joining them too?" Rena asked the flustered girl.
"No, no! I'm content with just reading book here, Rena-san." Airin answered immediately, showing her shoujo light novel she brought wirh her.
'With you.' Airin finished her sentence mentally. Little did Rena know that Airin prepared the book solely to accompany her if she chose to not play in the water.
But one should agree to Churi. Rena'd look way better if she chose to unwear her jacket and shorts, and revealing her white two piece.
"Is that so?" Rena asked, Airin nodded her head frantically.
Rena smiled and continued to read her book. The gentle breeze and the quietness relaxed her. And not long after that, she blacked out.

'Huh...?'
"Rena-san, Rena-san! Wake up!"
Rena opened her eyes and saw Airin's face hovering above hers.
'A-are? Since when did I fall asleep?'
"Are you that tired, Rena-san? You fell asleep not long after you read the book." Airin gave Rena a worried look. "If you're feeling unwell, you should just rest at the inn."
"No, no. I'm alright Airin. It's just so comfortable here that I fell asleep." Rena smiled and waved her friend's worry away.
Rena looked around, the skies was getting darker, it was hued in orange and dark blue. Was it that late already?
"Rena-san, I think we should get back to the inn. The other's already went first to clean themselves first." Airin get back to her beach-chair and took her book and Rena's, placing it inside her hand bag.
Rena also stood up and stretched her body, it was a pretty good rest.
"Let's go Rena-san! Ah, we should drop by the convenience store to buy some snacks and drinks for tonight too!"
The street lamp started to light as the sky darkens rapidly, illuminating the streets. Airin led them to a convenience store located near their inn. As they wanted to go inside, they saw a cute puppy sitting in front of the convenience store.
It was a black and white pappilon. It has a leash that was tied to nearby fence.
"Ah, kawaiii!" Both of them cooed and petted the puppy. Too bad the puppy just stared in annoyance and didn't gave any response back, it even shrugged them off.
"Wan!" The puppy barked when the convenience store's door opened and reveal a black haired young woman. Judging from her appearance, she might be in her early twenties.
Rena and Airin backed off when they saw her untied the leash and smiled towards them before walking away with her puppy.
"What a weird dog, it doesn't seem like to being petted. Maybe because we're strangers?" Airin mused out loud.
"Un..." Rena just nodded, unconsciously compared the dog's reaction with Jurina's who'd be barking and licking happily showing her affection if she's being petted, even with strangers.
"Ah, let's buy the drinks and snacks, we can't let the other wait for us too long!" Rena grabbed Airin's hand and went inside the convenience store, not noticing the blush on Airi 's face.
When they arrived at their inn, the other's already in the dining room, chatting hapily. The food was arranged by the inn's employee and they just waited until all of them gathered before they start the dinner.
"Jajaja! We bought snacks and drinks for tonight!" Airin said merrily and wave plastics bags on her hand.
Kuumin oooh'd and made weird shocked faces, Kanon slapped Kuumin's arm playfully while Churi just laughed them off. Rena giggled as well, and noticed someone's still missing.
"Churi, where's Jurina? Is she still taking a bath?"
"Huh? She said she's going back to the beach to see the sunset, didn't she bumped with you guys on your way back?"
Rena shaked her head, "Um, I'll go check on her, you guys can start the dinner first."
"Wait, Rena-san! I'll go with you!" Airin stoped Rena by holding her wrist.
"No, Airin. You stay here and have dinner with the other."
"But--"
"No buts, I insist." Rena's firm answer made Airin stopped her complaint.
"Don't worry, I'll just grab Jurina and head back immediately." Rena smiled and walked out to search the younger girl.

Jurina sat on the sand, hugging her knees. The night's breeze ruffled her hair and clothes as she stared off at the ocean. She didn't know how much time has passed since she sat there, and honestly she didn't care either.
It relaxed her as she saw the wave rise and falls slowly. 'Was this the feeling they called 'freedom'? No wonder they--'
"There you are, Jurina." A voice interrupted her thoughts. She looked back and saw Rena walked towards her.
"Let's go back, the other's worried about you. And dinners already been prepared."
Jurina looked back at the ocean. "I...want to stay here a bit longer."
Rena sighed and sat down beside Jurina, surprising the younger girl.
"What were you thinking?"
Jurina stared at the girl beside her before gazing back at the ocean. "The sea...it's really vast, isn't it? It was very fascinating when I saw the sea and the sky became one in the horizon."
Rena thought it was quite an odd comment, but since the girl beside her is by any means not a girl that can be considered normal, she slid it off.
Jurina rested her head on Rena's shoulder.
"I watched that numerously on tv back then. How fast the sea is, how clear the sky is. But this is the first time I saw it by myself." Jurina stopped a little before continuing. "I also saw a lot of another place on tv. There's a valley with a very big waterfalls, a lake surrounded by trees, and they said when the sky clear you can see the stars clearly in the sky. There's a field full of beautiful and colorful flower and has a lot butterflies in there. There's also this wheat field, when it was sunset it looks like the field was glowed in golden orange colors, very magnificent! Then there's also a place where everything covered in ice, isn't that very awesome?! Then there's also....also...
...The world is very beautiful, isn't it, Rena-chan? I want to see what our world looks like." Jurina finished her rambling with a longing smile.
"You sound like you never been out in your entire life. Have you been isolated somewhere all these year like a hermit?" Rena chuckled, it was supposed to be a joke.
"Do I really sounds like that?"
That longing smile again.
"...You definitely will see the world, Jurina. I'm certain."
That words touched and made her heart warm. She hugged the older girl and nuzzled on her neck.
"Wait, sto-wahh!"
Due to too much strength the younger girl used, both of them fall on the sand with Jurina on top. Her elbow keep her from falling down completely on the older girl.
"Wa-wait Jurina! This...uhhh..." Rena was alarmingly aware with their 'very intimate and questionable position' and wanted to push the girl off, but she stopped in her tracks as she felt Jurina rested her head on her chest. The younger girl even snuggling closer to her.
"A-ano...Ju-jurina...?" For the nth time, the younger girl made Rena's mind on stopped working.
"Hmm?" Feeling Rena's sudden timidness, Jurina just smiled. "Can we stay like this for a while, Rena-chan?"
Rena just nodded and laid there stiffly, her heartbeat went faster and faster.
"Rena-chan's so warm." Jurina said and giggled, "And she's very nervous that her heart's pounding like there's no tommorrow~"
"Mou! W-why don't you get off of me, a-and let my heart rest a bit." Rena stuttered on her words, her face aflame.
Jurina giggled more and raise her head, staring at the older girl's brown deeply. The puppy start to close her eyes and dipped her head slowy, stunning the older girl.
'W-w-w-what is she trying to do?! Don't tell me it's a k-ki---"
Sensing the girl below her's nervousness, Jurina only kissed the older girl's near her lips. Before getting up, she whispered, "...if only we can stay like this forever, Rena-chan...I'd be very happy."
With a smile, Jurina get up and offer a hand to the long-haired girl which she accepted. They just stood there for awhile until Rena's heartbeat back to it's normal rate.
"Yo-you shouldn't be too friendly with a stranger like me, w-what if I decide to take an advantage from you?" Rena said nervously when she tried to collect herself.
"Rena-chan is no stranger. And will you really take an advantage from me?"
"O-of corse not!" Rena shouted a little. Hey, didn't you all think it was the other way around!
"I believe Rena-chan." Jurina smiled and offered her hand. "Let's go back before the other started to worrying more."
Rena nodded her head slowly and took the girl's hand, her heart still jumping occassionally. It was then she noticed how cold the puppy's hand was, did she been out here that long? Rena hoped she won't catch a cold.
"Hey-hey! Whatcha doin' girls? It's dangerous for girls to walk alone in the night alone" a thug looking man stopped the girls. "Onii-chan will take you back, oh and we can stop somewhere to have fun first."
"Let's go-" the man tried to grab Rena's hand but Jurina moved in and slapped that hand away.
"Hands off." Jurina moved in front of Rena, shielding her with her arms.
Shocked, Rena tried to drag Jurina away but the younger girl wouldn't budge.
"Huh?!" The man glared at Jurina and move closer to Jurina to intimidate her with their physical difference.
"I said, hands off. And you smell bad, go away." Her voice's cold as steel and full of authority.
The man went to grab Jurina's collar but he stopped an inch before he reached his target. He didn't know what stopped him, was it her cold smile? Her killing intent? Or was it her stare that seemed want to make a hole in his head...or the fact that the girl's left pupil color was flickered to pale blue occassionaly before back to its normal color.
He gulped and felt he's cold sweating, "Ahh, no need to be serious. I'm just joking, ha...haha..."
The man walked past the girls without further comment, surprising Rena.
"Jurina, what did you--" Rena faced the younger girl, demanded an explanation.
"Hmm? Nothing~"
"Jurina it's dangerous to mess with a thug like him. We're lucky he left us now. Next time we should just ignore them and walk away."
Jurina patted Rena's head, and smiled. "Don't worry. I will protect Rena-chan."
That words, that smile. It made Rena want to dig a hole and hide herself because the embarrassment.
"Let's just...get back to the inn." Rena said and walked first.
"Un~" the puppy followed back obediently.

When Rena and Jurina arrived, the others was already ate their dinner halfway. Somehow they're a bit mad, but glad that the both of them are okay.
Jurina, who apologized and finished them with her charming smile, obtained the forgiveness rather quickly.
When they finished their dinner, they went to their room separately to either relaxing a bit or prepare their things before heading to Churi's room to chat happily there.
Since each room has only two beds, they alread divide the room to organize who'll share their room with who. Obviously, Rena asked to be together with Jurina. She used family as her reason, but we know better than that, she just didn't want any accident to happen if Jurina paired with another person...like sudden need to change form or something. Kuumin and Kanon was paired together, much to Kuumin's joy. And last was Churi and Airin.
"Jurina, have you take a bath already?" Rena said as she went out from the bathroom wearing a white tshirts and shorts. Her hair still wet and had some water dripping down, as she wiped her hair with a towel.
Jurina, who's been gazing at the sea from the window in their room turned her gaze to face the older girl. "Yup~"
Knock. Knock.
"Ah maybe it's the others fetching us." Rena said as she went to open the door.
Feeling the sudden chill, Jurina shouted.
"Don't open the door, Rena-chan!"
"Huh? Why?" Rena faced the younger girl. Her hands rested in top of the knob, ready to open it.
She remembered these sensations. It's definitely not their friends who's been knocking the door.
'It's them. It's definitely them. How come they can find me so fast?!'
Jurina hugged herself, hands trembling. Eyes never left the door. She felt a chill down her spine.
"Please, just...just don't open the door...Rena-chan." Jurina whispered softly.
Rena never saw Jurina like this, well once when she's questioning the short-haired girl before. The warm smile, power, and confidence that usually around her was nowhere to be seen. Just as her hands left the knob...
Knock. Knock.
"I know you're there. Please open the door."
Rena sighed, it seemed they're quite persistent. From her way of speaking, it seems they're quite polite. She'll just answer them and refuse whatever they need politely. Rena put the door-chain on just in case before opening the door.
In front of her there's two girls wearing black suits. The one who knocked her door was a short girl with ponytail, and the other was a black haired girl with dark look and glasses standing behind the shorter girl.
"Umm, how can I help you?" Rena started, unsure what these suspicious girls wants. But she have a very good guess.
"Is Jurina inside? Can you open the door so we can talk with her for a while?" The short girl smiled. She seemed not dangerous, but Rena knew better.
"Ah, I'm sorry. I think you knocked the wrong room." Rena answered politely before she went to close her door.
Seeing the door closed, the short ponytailed girl sighed. She stepped aside and let her friend finished the task in her style. The girl with the glasses moved in and sent a roundhouse kick to the door, breaking the door chain and even some of the door hinge was flying off.
The kick caught Rena off guard and made her thrown back. Herm arm was bruised because she shielded her face with them.
"Rena-chan!" Jurina wanted to go to the older girl, but she stopped when she saw the two girls entering her room.
"Acchan...Takamina..."
The girl with the glasses just smiled saddistically.
"It's been awhile, J."

"...Acchan...Takamina..."
'Acchan? Takamina? Was it their name?' Rena thought, she just sat there dumbfounded, her wounds forgotten.
"Yaa, just in few days and you got close enough to a civilian that she helped to hide you?" the short haired girl chuckled loudly. "You're as awesome as always when it's come to get people's affinity. You live to your name, prince charming."
Jurina backed slowly until her back touched the wall, her arms touched the windowsill. Her eyes switched between Rena who was on the ground and Atsuko who was slowly marching on her.
Seeing Jurina's uncertainty, Takamina moved in front of Rena, blocking the younger girl view.
"Why don't you just go back with us, Jurina? And everything can go back to how it was." Takamina smiled, offering her hand. "All of us can chat and live happily."
Jurina slowly closed her eyes to calm herself, her hand won't stop trembling. Her breath became uneven. All her senses screamed to run away, that there's no way to win against the two.
"And you know, Jurina?" Takamina said loudly, taking Jurina's attention, her tone became not too cheerful anymore.. "If you surrender peacefully..."
Takamina glanced at Rena and smirked.
"No one would get hurt eventually."
That statement made Jurina's heart sank. How come it became like this? Even Rena was dragged into this mess.
While Jurina's fighting mentally to not let herself cower in fear against these two, her impending doom became even closer. Her saddistic smile even grow wider by each step she took.
"Actually I don't mind even if she's struggling a bit, Minami. A workout is nice once in a while."
That's it. She couldn't take it anymore. She already made it this far, and she won't let anything ruin her dream. Not even her ex-comrades. Not even...Rena.
Without any hesitation Jurina turned around and jumped out from the window. Seeing her prey tried to escape, Atsuko followed suit, she also ran and jumped out from the window.
"Jurina!!" Rena shouted, shocked. Her room was on the fifth floor, for crying outloud! Who's on their right mind would jumped down from that height?!
She quickly composed herself and ran to the window. Looking down she saw Jurina landed safely on the ground and ran away, while the other girl still hopping down from a veranda to another trying to follow Jurina.
"Aah, that's what you get for being too cocky, Acchan!"
Rena turned around to see the other girl. She was scratching her already messy hair, and whine. "Now we have to chase her all over again..."
Takamina sighed, and turned to Rena. She felt guilty for what happened to her. The girl's just a bystander who got dragged into this matter. She supposed to erase any evidence, including any witness but...she's not a person who's capable of killing random innocent people. "Sorry for disturbing your night. I'll send someone to repair your door tomorrow."
The shorter girl walked to the broken door, and stopped once she reached it.
"For your own sake...Remember this, you never met a girl called Jurina." Takamina said, before she left, trying to catch up with her partner.
Rena was left behind, alone and dumbfounded. What happened in the last few minutes was too much for her. Rena looked back to the window, Jurina and the girl who was called Acchan was already nowhere to be found. It seems they already ran quite a distance.
Rena felt a pang of worry in her guts and muttered her name unconsciously.
"Jurina...please be safe."

Pant. Pant. PANT.
Her breath become rougher and rougher as each seconds passed. Her lung burned, her muscles sore to the bone. But she kept forcing her leg to run. No matter what, she won't let herself be caught now.
Not now. Not after she tasted the sweetness of freedom.
Jurina kept running until finally her legs gave up and she stumbled down on the pavement. The fall bruised her skin on her arms and leg, but it didn't matter now.
As Jurina tried to get up, she felt a hard stomp on her back. It's strong enough to force her back on the pavement.
Jurina hissed in pain.
"Your agility is quite something. But you know that you won't be able to outrun me." Jurina whipped her head back and saw Atsuko standing tall before her, panting slightly. "At least not in your current state."
"Acchan! Please, let me go!" Jurina pleaded, but her plead didn't reach the other girl. Instead she increased the pressure which made the younger girl screamed.
Hearing the younger girl in agony didn't make Atsuko flinch at all. She knew it hurted a lot, but it wouldn't hurt the younger girl permanently. She just needed to inflict enough amount of pain so the younger girl can no longer oppsoe her, or better, she hoped Jurina will obediently followed her back out of fear.
But after years knowing her, Atsuko knew she wouldn't. She's quite a stubborn girl. Just like herself and most of the member.
"Why did you run, Jurina?" Their place was perfect, everyone was living together happily. But one after another they started to disappear. "I won't let you disappear too." Atsuko mumbled unconsciously, her eye downcast.
Feeling the pressure on her back lighten, Jurina took that opportunity to break free from her captor. The sudden movement made Atsuko stumbled few steps back.
Her back hurts. A lot. If Atsuko pressed a little more, she would have broken or at least fractured some of her bones. Jurina clenched her fists and brought it upwards, making a fighting stance.
That made the frown on Atsuko's face deepen. She removed her glasses and placed it on her breast pocket. Her fist raised in the similar stance.
"I'm going to make you regret this, Jurina."
"AAaAaaHhHH!!!" Jurina shouted her battle cry and lunged forward. The cry was more to pump her courage than to scare her opponent.
'I don't have to win. I just have to landed a blow or two and make her disoriented. I can still escape if she lower her guard a bit.' Jurina chanted in her head.
The younger girl unleashed a left hook which was avoided smoothly. It was followed by serial punches which was either dodged of blocked effortlessly. As two traded fists, Jurina managed to press Atsuko and made her move backwards step by step.
'I can do it!' As another punch was dodged, Jurina leaned in to deliver an uppercut but was met with a palm on her chin. It was not a hard blow, but the move made Jurina's lose her timing and was forced back to collect herself.
But Atsuko wouldnn't let her recover from the surprise attack. She closed in, grabbed Jurina's shoulder and kneed her in the stomach, hard. As Jurina staggered to keep herself up, Atsuko delivered an axe-kick that finally brought the younger girl on her knees.
"Did you learn your lesson yet?"
Acchan's voice and tone raged her. It sounded like she was on another whole level that couldn't be reached, no matter how hard she tried.
Jurin gritted her teeth and recklessly swung her fist forward, tried to at least land a blow on Atsuko. With a swift movement, Atsuko caught her punch and using the momentum, she threw the younger girl.
After Jurina landed painfully, she felt herself was caught in a hammerlock immediately.
"So? Will you go back obediently?"
"No! Argh!" Jurina screamed immediately as Atsuko applied more pressure on her shoulder joints.
"Do I have to dislocate your joint first or what?" Atsuko threatened.
'Darn it. Is the gap between us is that far?'
Witnessing the lack of reply from the younger girl, Atsuko did what she threatened.
At that moment, a loud, agonizing scream filled the nights.
Her vision almost whitened. Her body trembling, screamed in pain too much it went numb. Tears started to streaming down her beautiful face.
Luckily they're on a remote area, but if things were to continue, no doubt they'll attract people's attention.
Atsuko sighed and got up, she'll just have to drag the younger back. Maybe she'll have to make her faint first, thus refraining the younger girl from causing any trouble.
Even as her senses was on fire, the younger girl keep struggling to move away from her captor. Her determination showed in her tears-filled-eyes.
"Why...why are you struggling so hard to escape? It's useless! No matter how hard you tried, it's useless Jurina!" Atsuko shouted. "Even if you managed to escape, you won't be able to survive alone in this world! Humans are a filthy creature, they'll only use you and throw you away once you're no longer useful to them!"
"And yet you cling to those you called filthy creature!" Jurina shouted.
"What?" Atsuko's eyes widened at the sudden outburst.
"Takamina, she--"
"Don't you dare to finish your sentence, Jurina!" Atsuko silenced the younger girl. "Don't you dare to associate Minami with those filth! She--Minami is different!"
"So you DO understand that not all human is as bad as they taught us! I met with Rena-chan and her frienda, none of them are bad people!" Jurina tried to argue. Maybe, just maybe, she can convince Acchan to let her go. "You, of all people should know about our benefactors. They're not a kind-hearted people who supported us and the facilities out of kindness. They're using us as a guinea pig! With your strength, you can easily break free of their chain, but why did you stay as their lapdog instead?!"
It was true. Atsuko lowered her gaze. She knew everything the younger girl said was true. "I can't...Minami, she..."
"Then just bring Takamina with you, if you explain I'm sure she'll understand!"
"Shut up, Jurina."
Jurina clamped her mouth with the sudden coldness in Atsuko's voice. When their eyes met, Jurina felt another chill went down on her spine as she saw how hollow Atsuko's eyes looked.
"It's none of your business. My job is just to retrieve you back to the facility. No more, no less. Save your heart wrenching story for later, J." Atsuko walked towards the helpless girl and yanked her head up.
Atsuko took a small injection capsule from her pocket. It was filled with a bright blue substance. The fear shown on Jurina's face told that she knew what it was.
"You...that...no-NO!" Jurina's struggled as hard as she could with only one arm functioning.
"I never wanted to use this, but you're the one who asking with your stubborn attitude." Atsuko took the tip off and readied the needle.
"Brace yourself."
Atsuko slammed the needle on Jurina's left-side neck, and watched as the substance slowly disappear into the younger girl's bloodstream.
When all of the substance finally disappeared, Atsuko pulled the needle out and withdrawn her grip from the younger girl. Atsuko let Jurina crashed down on the pavement and watched as she spasmed. The younger girl pupils dilated, it started to change between shining bright blue and her normal color.
"A-aa---hh--aa--!" Incoherent sounds went out from her mouth as she struggled to keep awake. She tried to get up with her hand, but failed misearbly and came back down in an instant. Her shivering went down as her eyes blurred before finally she lost her conscious.
Atsuko sighed again as she saw the younger girl finally stopped moving. It'll be way easier to bring her back to the facility while she's unconscious.
As Atsuko walked to the unconscious girl lying on the pavement, she felt a ferocious aura from her back. She stopped her tracks and redirected her vision to see a familiar short brown haired girl with a jumper and hotpants smiling towards her.
The girl smile showed her infamous dimple and her prominent squirrel's tooth.
Acchan squinted her eyes. "Yuuko."
"Acchan." The short girl replied her without removing her smile.
"What were you doing here?" Acchan started coldly. Her trained eyes followed the other girl's movement, even the smallest twitch.
"Yaaa~ that's not the way you speak to an old comrades, Acchan. Especially one you haven't met in years." The girl called Yuuko smiled and walked towards Atsuko, but stopped midway as Atsuko raised her fist in a fighting stance.
"But...it seems the girls these days is lacking a rigorous training. To be defeated by you in your current state is..." Yuuko stopped her sentence, not knowing how she should finish the sentence without angering the other girl. "Anyway, they should've been able to put up a better fight." Yuuko finished, she tilted her head to take a better look on the unconscious girl.
"Soo, how is she? Acchan injected the drug on her after all. Should we prepare a chain leash?" Yuuko asked in a sing-song voice.
At first Atsuko's a bit confused with Yuuko's question. But then she realized the squirrel girl isn't talking to herself. Atsuko whipped her head and saw another girl, clad in a black hoodie and skirt was kneeling beside Jurina, examining the unconscious girl.
"Don't worry, the amount that was injected isn't enough to forcefully awakens her. But just in case, I think we still have to prepare the leash. She may undergo a semi-awakened state as a side effect when she regain her conscious." The hooded girl replied. The hood covered most of her face, but by the way she spoke and her knowledge about the drug, Atsuko has a good hunch on who's the hooded girl.
"Leave her. She's my prey." Atsuko mentioned the hooded girl to move away, but was ignored completely as the hooded girl tried to carry Jurina in bridal style.
"I said--" Atsuko stopped when she felt another tremendous aura emitted by Yuuko.
"The drug, while a small dose of it can be used as anesthesia...A larger dose can..." Atsuko faced her old friend once again, seeing her pupils dilated and her brown orbs change its color.
Years ago when she disappeared, she thought she'd never see those eyes again. Yet now, those brilliantly glowing golden eyes was staring at her.
"Awaken a beast." Yuuko finished her sentence and ran to Atsuko, giving her a side kick strong enough to throw her few feets back.
"Go. I'll handle her." Yuuko said to the hooded girl. The hooded girl nodded and took a few steps back before totally disappear, blending with the darkness surrounded the area.
Atsuko rubbed her arm that took the impact from Yuuko's kick. She eyed the squirrel girl and smirked. "You think you can defeat me?" Atsuko took another capsule containing the drug.
Eyeing the small injection, Yuuko knew this is going to be a rough fight. But she just smiled and shrugged, "What? I'm the current Ace. Your era already over, Acchan."
"You may be the Ace now, Yuuko. But I'm a legend!"
Atsuko stabbed her neck with the injection capsule. As the substance drained to her bloodstream, her pupils dilated and shone a brilliant blue brightly.
Two strong forces collided head first. Their hands were on death grip pushing the other away, testing each other's strength.
Knowing she'd definitely lose if she chose to compete on a raw power with Atsuko, Yuuko let her hand loosened suddenly and deliver a front snap kick which was blocked perfectly by Atsuko. Not going down, Yuuko pressed further with her consecutive kicks and finished her combo with a combination of low, middle, and high reverse roundhouse kick.
Atsuko took several step backs with her fists high guarding her face and body. By personal experience she knew if she let herself got caught by Yuuko combo. Her agility didn't decrease when compared to the last they fought in a mock battle, she even seemed to have more tricks up on her sleeve. She can't let her guard down even in a bit.
"It seemed when you ingested the drug you can go back to your prime time, Acchan. But I don't think it will stay in a long time. The efficiency of the drug you used will be decreased each time you used it." Yuuko said, examining the other girl. Her movement is a bit sluggish compared to when she was the first Ace.
"And not to mention the side effect..." Yuuko trailed off. "You should just step down and retire, Acchan. Find some place secluded and live happily with Takamina there."
"You know I can't do that, Yuuko." Acchan readied herself to continue with the battle, but Yuuko just laughed.
"Now, now Acchan. Don't be too aggresive. My job is just to lure you, not fighting you to death." Yuuko giggled. "And it seems that my job has finished. See you, Acchan." Yuuko slowly step back.
"You think I'll let you off that easily?!" Acchan ran towards Yuuko, but it was too late. The squirrel girl was already blended in the darkness and was nowhere to be seen.
"As much as I know that I can't match you in term of raw power. You too should know that you can't match me in term of agility." Yuuko voice echoed. "Oh and there's a hello from Nyan Nyan."
Atsuko stopped in her tracks, frowning. "Kojiharu too?"

Morning came quickly, not that she actually got a time to sleep peacefully. Her minds was in a haywire. Too much happened to her last night.
Squinting her eyes from the glaring sun, Matsui Rena finally rose from her futon.
Because of last night incident, she have to move to Akane's and Airi's room, adding one extra futon there. Not only that, she has to convince her friends that Jurina was back to Tokyo due to an urgent situation about her family and a robber went inside her room while she was escorting Jurina to the nearest station. A bruise on her arm was because she clumsily fall down on her way back to the inn.
It was a lame story. And she herself wondered how come her friends buy it nonetheless.
"Rena-san, breakfast is ready! Let's go down." It was Airi. Rena smiled and walked down with her friend.
In the dining room the others was already there, they even already started on their breakfast.
When the others enjoy their breakfast, Rena still felt a nagging feeling on her heart. Especially about what the ponytailed girl told her last night. What did it mean?
"Anoo, is Matsui Rena-sama here?" An employee went inside the dining room and wave her head, looking for the one who called Matsui Rena.
"Ah, hai?" Rena stood up and went to the employee.
"Um, I'm sorry to disturbed your breakfast, ma'am. There's young lady looking for you in the lobby." The employee said while bowing.
Rena immediately went to te lobby, ignoring the questioning look from her friends. She hoped it was her who's in the lobby. A certain short haired girl that was missing since last night.
A certain puppy...
When Rena arrived in the lobby, she felt a pang of disappointment when it was not her puppy. The person who waited for her was a refined beautiful young woman dressed in a simple cream-colored dress.
"Ah, ano..." Rena trailed off.
The woman in question turned to saw Rena. And when they faced each other, she remembered. "Ah, you're the one from the convenience store!"
The young woman just smiled and nodded.
"Good morning, my name's Kashiwagi Yuki. I'm sorry for disturbing your morning, Rena-san. But this is quite an urgent matter and require your assistance immediately." She bowed, before continuing. "This is about Jurina. Unfortunately we can't speak here, so if it's okay with you. Would you like to come to my place?" The young woman mentioned a black luxury car parked in front of the lobby with a chaffeur stood on its side.
Hearing Jurina's name, without any hesitation Rena nodded her head.

Recently I have a weird dream about Wmatsui vampire story...but in that story the vampire is Rena, not Jurina. The setting was in a school, and I don't remember much other than Jurina kept harassing getting friendly on Rena without knowing that she's quite special.

The journey to Kashiwagi’s place was a quiet one. Rena learned a few things about the girl who sat beside her, like she used to live in Tokyo. But due to circumstances, she had to move. Rena wondered about that, the way she spoke about the circumstances…it made her curious.
The pappilon from the convenience store, was Yuki actually in the same boat as herself? And she also knew about Jurina…
“We’re arrived, Matsui-san.” Yuki spoke, startling Rena.
“Ha-hai!”
‘Why did I suddenly feel nervous?’ Rena thought as she exited the vehicle.
It was a two storey villa with a beautiful garden surrounding the building. The building was built with a perfect combination of modern and natural design. The style was minimalist, but the material and the color has a rich natural aura. The roof was high and painted in blue with a a stoney colored chimney atop. It looked like a comfortable rest house for a conglomerate.
Simple, elegant, and comfortable.
Actually with the ojousama aura and a limo she saw in the lobby, Rena was expecting to be brought in a castle-like mansion with lots of statues and fountains. But this is not half bad.
As she entered the villa she saw two girls relaxing on the sofa in the living room. The first girl was a tall brunette, she’s lounging on the couch immersed with her nds. The other one also a brunette, a shorter one with mischievous smile and at the moment she’s busy trying to get an attention from the taller brunette.
“I’m back.” Yuki announced her presence, “I also bring Matsui-san with me.”
“H-hello.” Rena started nevously.
The other two gazes suddenly fell on Rena. The taller brunete stare at her blankly, while the shorter’s smile grew even wider. Their stare gave Rena a bit of goosebumps, she felt like a prey being caught by the predators.
The shorter one suddenly jumped out and greeted Rena. “Hi! The name’s Oshima Yuuko!”
“Kojima Haruna. But Kojiharu or Nyan Nyan is fine too.” The taller brunette greeted with an angelic smile that made Rena’s heart skipped a beat.
Yuuko ran and observing Rena from head to toe, she walked around, appraising the younger girl. After few minutes, Yuuko smiled affectionately, and nodded her head. “Umm! You’re good enough! Jurina have a good taste!”
“H-huh?” Rena felt unnerved. Good enough? For what?
“Yawn~ Don’t scare her with your questionable comments, Oshiriko-chan.” Another girl made her presence known, she walked down from the 2nd floor stairs. Her drowsy face looked like she’s just woke up.
“Shiriri-chan, good morning!” Yuuko glomped the the new girl.
“Hai, hai. Good morning to you too. Please refrain yourself from doing uneccessary things, Oshiriko-chan…else, something bad will definitely bound to happen sooner or later.” The girl stole a glance towards Kojiharu and Yuki who’s giving off a dangerous vibe.
Rena smiled meekly at the situation, she felt like a fifth wheel in the room…
“Ah, Matsui Rena right?”
“Hai. Nice to meet you.” Rena bowed her head.
“Watanabe Mayu.” Mayu also bowed her head, hiding her smirk. “Nice to meet you too, even though it’s not the first time we met.”
The last sentence almost went unnoticed by Rena, it made her bewiledered.
“I’m sorry, have we met before?” Rena asked, but Mayu just smirked.
“Oh well, forget it. You’ll understand soon. Now let’s focus to Jurina.” That name got Rena’s full attention.
“Since apparently you already knew about Jurina’s…ability.” Mayu hesitated a bit, before continung. ”I’m sure you have a lot of question, but we will answer all your question later. There’s more important issue at the moment. Follow me.”
“Umm, Mayu-san? Can I ask you a question?” Something was bugging Rena about this girl.
“You already did.”
“Ah, sorry, I mean, um…How did you know I knew about Jurina’s ability?”
That question brought a smirk to Mayu’s face. “Believe it or not, we know everything about you since you met Jurina.”
That answer made Rena’s flustered. “Wha-what did you mean by that, Mayu-san??”
Haruna chuckled. “We have more pressing issue now, Rena-chan. Let’s save the questions for later, ne?”
Rena’s answer was only a single nod.
They were led by Mayu to the basement entrance. The wooden stairs were emitting creaking sound as they went down to the basement. The wall was changed from the wooden construction into a stone one, several old lamps was illuminating the corridor. The place looked like a dungeon from a medieval era.
In the end of the corridor the was a metal door.
Mayu’s hand went to grab the handle, her face’s expression turned grim. “It’s not a beautiful sight but please bear with it.”
The door opened with a loud creak. When Rena entered the dimly lit rectangular room, she felt like all her blood has been drained.
There, in the back of the room, sat Jurina. Bruises and darkened blood marred her beautiful feature, her skin was way paler than usual. The usual cheery smile are nowhere to be seen. Her eyes was closed, and her breath came out unevenly. What’s made Rena worried even more is the shackles that binded Jurina’s arms and neck. Each shackles’s chain was embedded to the stone wall behind, restraining the prisoner’s movement to the minimum.
“Jurina!”
“Wait!” Mayu held Rena’s wrist, preventing her from rushing to Jurina. “Listen, at the moment she’s not the Jurina you once knew. Any reckless movement will only get you hurt.”
“What? What did you mean? Look at her. She’s hurt!” Rena protested pointing at Jurina with her free hand, yet Mayu was unfazed. “Why didn’t you guys tend her wounds?! You even bind her like she’s some animal!”
Rena yanked her hands free and rushed to Jurina’s side. She slightly shook the younger girl attempting to awaken her. “Oh my god…” Rena shuddered when she discovered more bruises and cut skin marred Jurina’s neck and wrists, not mentioning lots of small cuts and light bruises here and there.
Upon receiving no response from Jurina, Rena became frantic. She didn’t notice the small twitch from the shackled hand residing near herself.
“Mmhn…” Small groan.
That sounds made a smile and hope appeared in Rena’s face. “Jurina! Can you hear me?”

‘Someone’s calling me…who…?’ Everything’s looked so bright for the chained girl as she tried to open her eyes. Slowly, she started to saw a blur of a person who’s crouching in front of herself. As she regained her consciousness, her hands that was lying limply before was started to move a bit, creating a clanking sound.

When she felt Jurina was about toregain her consciousness, a smile crept into Rena’s beautiful face. Yet her happiness soon turned into a frown as the younger girl’s start to move her body violently, trying to break free from the restrain. Because of the shackles, Jurina’s move was limited. Yet the force she use to trying to break free was backfiring and injuring her wrists and neck even more.
Jurina’s bright blue eyes shone brilliantly, captivating Rena.
As Rena unconsciously moved her hands to touch Jurina’s cheek, a rough yank brought her back to her senses.
“Huh?” Rena looked back and saw Yuuko.
“Stand back. It’s starting to get dangerous. I’ll take over from here.”
“Wha-wait, Yuuko-san! I didn’t even know what happened! Why was Jurina acting strangely? Did something happened to Jurina?” Rena demanded.
“Jurina was injected by a drug. Long story short, she’ll have a frenzy time when the drug was still in her system. People have different ways to regain her their sanity’s back. Back then I was beaten severely by Acchan before I was able to regain it back, Nyan Nyan is a good girl so she just sat doing nothing for few days and everything’ set. I dunno about Shiriri-chan’s case, thoguh.” Yuuko finished, throwing a glance to a certain girl back there.
“I was on the run back then when Yukirin found me in my half-awakened state…And she helped me to regain it back.” Mayu gave a warm smile to Yuki which was answered by a smile and a pat.
“And that’s why I thought it’s going to work if we bring you here to calm Jurina down. But I think it’s not working…” A frown made to Mayu’s face. “Since it was experimental drug, there’s a lot of factors we don’t know yet.”
“But it seems we will have to rough her up. I will try not to leave any permanent damage.” Yuuko cracked her knuckle as her pupils started to change it’s color to gold.
“Wait, Yuuko-san! Why don’t we try to leave her alone like Kojiharu-san back then? Maybe she’ll revert back on her own!” Rena stopped Yuuko from advancing to her puppy.
“The longer they stay in these state, the harder they’ll able to regain their sanity.” Yuuko said, her eyes downcasted. “There’s even a case that they didn’t regain it and remained as a mindless beast. But I won’t let that happened.” Her golden eyes shone bightly with determination.
“Move aside.”
“No!”
Rena stubbornly stand in front of Yuuko, shielding Jurina. There’s must be another way without violence.
“P-please let me try to talk to Jurina again!” Rena stuttered. To be honest she was frightened. But she won’t let the younger girl suffer anymore.
Without waiting for any answers, Rena rushed back to Jurina’s side. She planted her hands on Jurina’s shoulder, shaking her lightly. “Jurina! Please calm down!”
Rena moved her hands to cupped her puppy’s face. That gesture managed to calm her down a bit.
“Jurina…Can you hear me? It’s me, Rena.”
“Rena…chan.” The chained girl squeaked Rena’s name with her raspy voice.
“That’s right! Jurina, it’s me, Rena-chan.” Rena repeated Jurina’s words. “You remember me, right?”

‘Rena-chan…I know that name…it felt so familiar…’

With a strong yank Jurina broke the chains from her right hand’s shackle. The recoil and chain pieces’s went flying to all directions, some even hit the older Matsui.
Rena felt a rough wounded fingers touch her face, caressing her cheek. The affectionate touch felt warm and made her heart flutter.
“Rena…Rena-chan?”
Rena enveloped the hands that caressed her face with her own.
“Hai.” Rena hugged the chained girl. “It’s Rena-chan.”
Tears started to build up in her eyes as she felt the warmth that enveloped her body. “Gomen…Rena-chan.”
Using her available hand, Jurina returned the hug. Her bright blue eyes dimmed before finally returned to its normal color. Her mouth trembling, tried to tone down the sobbing.
“I’m sorry for making you worried, Rena-chan…I’m back.”
Hearing the raspy voice made Rena smiled unconsciously and tightened her hug.
“Welcome home, Jurina.”

A sigh escaped for the nth time from a young girl's mouth. She raised her head to take a peek to her other half who's been on the phone for awhile. Her partner's voice sounded strained as she apologized over and over.
Because of her cockiness she made a mistake and brought Minami down with her, shouldering the burden of failed mission together. She had to do something to make up for her failure this time.
After what seemingly like an eternity, finally Minami put her phone back to her pocket. She walked to the bench where Atsuko sat flopped down beside her, releasing a long sigh.
"...How was it, Minami?" Atsuko started with small voice, "Was he angry?"
It was a stupid question. Of course he'd be angry. After all, didn't only they failed to retrieve Jurina but they also cause quite a ruckus that'll needed to be calmed down before they're exposed.
"He was. But when I tell him about Yuuko's meddling, he seemed to be interested. He even laughed at the possibilities of us caught Yuuko and the others along with Jurina." Minami gave Atsuko a dry laugh. "Man, is he out of his mind? It's hard enough to fend off Yuuko, let alone to recapture her."
"It's not entirely impossible, Minami. I...I believe I can do something to--"
"No." Minami cut her sentence. "We agreed that you won't push any strain more than necessary to your body in exchange for you to be my partner. Have you forgotten about it, Atsuko?"
Atsuko lowered her eyes and shook her head.
"Good! Those drugs do make you stronger, but you have to pay attention to your health as well, Atsuko. In fact, you should just ask a vacation leave to ease all your stress."
"Why don't you?"
That question made Minami looked at Atsuko and gave her a wry smile. "You know I can't do that. They took us in when we're just a powerless orphan and raise us to be the person we are now."
Minami looked at the starless sky and took a deep breath. "I have to repay them in anyway I can."
Atsuko just smiled at Minami. "If Minami say so, I will be always stay by her side."
That answer made Minami smile, yet she felt a dull ache in her heart's corner. But she'll just ignore it for now.
Minami hopped off from the bench and offer her hand to Atsuko. "Let's go, I'm hungry after all the running."
Atsuko took her hand and let herself be pulled up by her partner. "Sure. What would you like to eat, Minami?"
"Of course, katsudon!"
"Katsudon...again?" Atsuko made a bewildered face on her partner's suggestion. But if it's for Minami, she'll endure a katsudon for a life time. Or so she thought at the moment.

"Owwieeee~!" A high-pitched scream was heard from Kashiwagi's villa, followed by a muffled groan and hiss.
Both Jurina and Rena was sitting in the guest room's bed, the latter tending the puppy's wounds using the first aid kit she borrowed from Yuki.
"Jurina, stop moving around so much! It'll be harder for me to tend your wounds!" Rena hissed as she prodded Jurina's bruise with a cotton smeared by antiseptics.
"Ow ow! But it hurts, Rena-chan!" Jurina whined as she tried to shy away.
"Mou, stop struggling so much!" Rena gave Jurina's shoulder a death grip and forcefully cleaned the wounds on her neck before putting a clean bandage to cover the wounds. Deep inside, Jurina wondered how come such tiny arms have that much power to held her.
"Finally, done. It'll be less painful if you just sat there obediently and let me do my job." Rena sighed as she cleaned her first aid tool kit. It's a good thing she's familiar with the kit due to the fact she's been living alone for quite a while.
Rena took a look on her puppy and gave herself a satisfying nod for her accomplishment. The most severe wounds were on both Jurina's wrists and her neck, which been cleaned and badaged. While the rest is enough to be plastered with a bandaid.
"Mou, Rena-chan can say that because she didn't feel the pain herself." Jurina still sulking, adding a pout for an extra effect.
Rena sighed again and flicked Jurina's forehead, making the adorable puppy had a teary eyes once again.
"Then don't running around and injuring yourself in the process."
"Mouu~ Rena-chaaan~ It huurts..." Jurina whined and pouted even more. Adding her secret weapon puppy eyes, she gave a Rena a pleading looks.
"...What?" Rena rolled her eyes, unable to resist the puppy's antics.
"Kiss me until it gets better." Jurina hugged the older girl and made a smooching demonstration, full with her weird sound effects.
Her sudden attack made Rena blushed uncontrollably, Rena swear all her blood must have rushed to her face and made it looked like it'll explode anytime.
"Jurina!"
Rena smacked the younger girl, but the puppy attack was relentless. She giggled as she observe the older girl's reaction. Her flustered face, her stuttered words, her weak attempt to block Jurina's assault...Jurina wanted to be spoiled more by her princess.
Showing a pity for the flustered girl, Jurina finally stopped her assault. Smiling due to the older Matsui awkwardness, slowly she took Rena's hand and place it above her chest, her heart. The gesture stopped all of Rena's thought, her face looked like a deer caught in a headlights.
She could feel the warmth seeped through the clothes and into Rena's hand. She could felt the puppy's fast yet steady and strong heartbeat...
"Rena-chan, I--"
Then suddenly the door opened, revealing Yuuko, Haruna, Mayu, and Yuki. The sudden entrance made both Rena and Jurina withdraw their hands immediately. Their face flushed and their gaze suddenly found the wall and floor to be very interesting to stare.
"Woops, did we interrupt something?" Yuuko said breaking the awkward silence.
"Yuu-chan, that's why I insisted we should have knocked first. It's more polite and not to mention we don't know what they're doing inside." Kojiharu looked at the shorter girl and pouted.
"Heh. You made it sounds like they were doing something inappropiate." Mayu smirked and let out small giggle, showing her mischievous side.
"Stop it Mayuyu. You made Rena and Jurina felt uncomfortable." Yuki pitied both of Rena and Jurina, their face was looked like it was being boiled.
"Right. So let's get down to the business." Mayu started as she dragged two chairs for her and Yuki to sat. Yuuko and Haruna was sitting on a nearby couch while Jurina and Rena stay still.
"As I promised, I will answer all of your question. But first let me ask you this one question..." Mayu raised her index finger in front of Rena.
"The information you're about to hear is a very classified information. After you hear it, I guarantee your life will not be as simple as before. Hence, you have two options. One, you can back out and live your normal life like before. No hunter, no danger lurking in the dark, you'll live happily as a simple normal Japanese girl." Mayu paused a moment, and raised her middle finger to accompany the index. "Or two, you choose to get involved with us. This'll probably ruin your entire life, since you'll also be considered as a fugitive. Danger will be always your bestfriend and maybe your family and friends can get involved into dangerous situation.
Either you backed out and cut ties with us, or you side with us and cut your link with your friends and family. Your answer will determine how we'll treat you from now on."
Mayu's question made Rena hesitated. What's with the question? It's hardly could be called a question! The way Mayu put her choice was a clear statement that they didn't want Rena involved more with them.
Rena bit her lip as she consider both of the options. She couldn't choose.
Suddenly she felt a trembling hand enveloped hers. She took a look of the owner of said hand, and saw an almost crying Jurina.
"Rena-chan...don't leave me..." Jurina whimpered.
The sight made Rena lost. She felt a tug on her heart as she saw a lone tear streaming down her puppy's face.
"I...I don't think I have to choose, Mayu-san." Rena answered, her eyes showed deviance. "I've been involved for quite a while. Don't you think I at least needed a proper explanation for these situation?"
"Look, what I told you was a possible threat concerning your friends and family if you got involved with us. Trust me, it can get uglier. Please don't make light of our situations. You'll regret it." Mayu pressed further.
Squeezing Jurina's hand, Rena gathered her courage and gave her final answer.
"I'll regret more if I chose to abandon a crying puppy in the middle of a storm."
The answer made Mayu and the others blinked few times before they realized the meaning of Rena's comparison.
Jurina's face contorted as a jumble of emotion ran thtough her face. Hapiness, joy, affectionate, surprise, even a hint of sadness and loneliness. She hugged Rena tightly and nuzzled her face on the older girl's neck. "Don't worry Rena-chan, I will protect you~"
"Said the one who was running away and being cornered by an expired unit." A sarcastic remarks silenced the puppy immediately. All eyes fixed on a tall brunette who's fiddling with her hairs at the moment.
"What? I just stated the truth." Kojiharu blinked and gave them an innocent look.
"Way to kill the mood instantly, Nyan Nyan..." Yuuko groaned beside her.
"Okaaay...So, where would you like me to start?" Mayu addressed the older Matsui.
"From the very beginning. What are you, where are you from...I-is that okay?"
"Sure, so...We're used to be a normal children, but we're recruited and raised under heavy training and monitoring in Tokyo for the last several years...We're taught about everything from basic general knowledge to 101 military tactics and martial arts and weaponry knowledge."
"Didn't your family went against it?" Rena asked out of curiosity.
Yuuko chuckled, "We're orphans taken from various orphanages around Japan. No one cared about us but ourselves."
"Ah...sorry..."
"No need to apologize. So apparently there are some wealthy people who took an interest in a genetics recombination research and fund an entire experiment to achieve a higher grade of humanity, which to be honest, is just a money-wasting project creating monsters like us." Mayu spat her words viciously.
"M-monsters...?"
"What, aren't you freaked out to see a human capable to transform themselves into a dog?" Mayu raised an eyebrow, challenging Rena.
At first Rena furrowed her face, then the reality hit her. "You're the papillon at the convenience store."
Mayu smirked as she heard Rena's statement. Of course, why didn't she see it before? Jurina's able to transform from a puppy to a human. No one said that Jurina's the only one who's capable of the feat.
"You're quite bright. Kay, let's continue. After years of training and solitude under the names of researches, finally some of us got the guts to revolt. Whilst some's unable to tear the confinement, the others are able to taste the sweetness of freedom." Mayuyu ended with a fake smile. Rena had a feeling it's not the entire story, and Mayu still hasn't trust her enough to spill the beans. Thus, she has to resort to other method to extract the information.
Rena looked to Yuuko, she seemed more friendly than Mayu. "What about the drugs mentioned in the basement? What's that? And what did you mean by an expired unit?"
"The drugs are like a catalyst. We've undergo some genetics recombination experiments to enhance our sense and physical ability, but to utilize the maximum effect, most of us still needs the drugs as a catalyst. The drug is too strong for normal people, even us. We need to built our body resistance by ingesting the drug regularly and increase the amount little by little. Until we're strong enough to take it in a huge amount at once, we called it 'awakening'." Yuuko's eyes started to glow dimly. "After we awakened, we don't need the drug anymore and can control the power on our will. Furthermore, we receive a special gift. Mine is an enhanced sense of smell. Pretty convenience, eh?"
"You made it sounds so trivial." Mayu sighed.
"It is." Yuuko answered in a sing song voice, her eyes already back on its normal color. "About the expired unit...Nyan Nyan refers to Acchan, one of our former colleague, actually maybe you already met her. She's one of the very first generations, which means she started her training and experiments earlier than us. After an awakening, the drugs compatibility started to wear off in various period depending on the person. Some people lasted years, some only lasted few weeks. When the drug finally wears off, our body capability will be regressed back similar to that a human. A constant use of drug to regain our prime time is prohibited, since it'll mangle with our health and sanity. A higher dosage even said is capable to destroy our body instantly."
"The awakened who's lost their power, we jokingly called them expired. It's rude, but eventually we'll ended up like them." Haruna chuckled darkly.
"While most of the expired were released as they have no more benefit for the experiments, some are allowed to stay within the perimeter, even hired as the staff for the institue. Like Acchan." Mayu added.
After few times mentioning Acchan's name, Rena felt the grip on her hands tightened. She took a peek on Jurina and frowned when she saw the grim face of the younger girl.
"Don't worry J. It's just a hypothesis, but apparently the younger the age when we were experimented, the more we compatible with the drugs. That way, no one will be able to rival your power once you awakened." Mayu chuckled, gaining Rena's attention.
"Huh? What did you mean by that?" Rena felt a dread started to pool up in her stomach,
"Jurina's been experimented even since she's still in her mother's womb. No one will be able to surpass her compatibility." Haruna answered monotonely.
The revelations made Yuki gasped and Rena stare bewilderedly on the puppy beside her.
"What...what is the purpose of this research?!" Rena gritted her teeth, suddenly she felt very displeased with everything she heard.
Mayu shrugged. "Saa...I heard it was something like 'for the better humanity' or something."

"Rena-chan..."
A soft whisper awakened young Rena from her slumber. She saw her mother sat beside her bed with a small sad smile.
"Mama and papa will have to go for a while. Be a good child in the meantime, ne?" the older woman gave her child a soft peck on her forehead before she tucked her girl back in her bed and left with her husband.
Back then she never know why was her mother made that face, but now she maybe understand even only a bit. It was a face when someone was put in a situation which they have to let go of something important for the better.
That night...it was the last time she saw her parents. And the next morning was the day she started to keep other people at bay. As she warned herself to better not to let anyone went too close to her heart, as it will be too painful when they have to bid farewell.

Rena slowly opened her eyes, an unpleasant feeling still lingering in her stomach after she heard Mayu and Yuuko's explanation just now. Even with the hazyness of the explanation that raised more questions in her head, she decided to let it pass for now. It didn't seemed that Mayu want to share more information than the one she let out. At least not yet.
She let her eyes roamed in the room until it landed on the empty chair where Mayu sat before, and remembered the warning Mayu sent her.
She would have to face an extreme change in her life, maybe it'll turned to the worse. Was it really the best choice? Or...
Rena shifted her gaze to the puppy who's been resting her head in her lap since the others left the room. Jurina was smiling as she drew random pattern in her thighs beside her head.
A small smile graced Rena lips as she saw the bright smile when Jurina's face turned to face hers.
It definitely worthed everything.
Wait, what? Suddenly Rena felt her face heated and a tingle appeared in her somach. Since when she felt warmed with Jurina's smile? Since when her heart flutter when she saw the puppy's silly yet somehow cute affection? Rena felt her face went hotter and hotter as came to the realization, a possibility that...that the puppy finally infiltrated inside her defense...that she might started to fall for the puppy...
"Rena-chan?" Jurina's call woke Rena up from her little fantasy world. She felt a hand on her forehead, and saw Jurina's face a bit closer that usual. "Your face suddenly went very red. Did you catch a cold?"
Rena backed away as she saw Jurina inching closer to place her forehead on hers. A muffled answer wasn't enough to stop the puppy's advance, fortunately her hand on Jurina's shoulder kept her distance.
The consistent push from the puppy made the older Matsui fell back to the bed an the puppy hovering above her, arms glued beside Rena's head to keep her balance. When she saw the puppy inched closer little by little, Rena felt her heart decided to be very excited at the moment. The older girl shut her eyes as she await her puppy and...
A knock was heard, then the door was opened revealing Yuki. Rena felt like a deer caught in the headlight, again, as she saw how Yuki's expression turned from her usual smile to a bewildered one. Yuki's eyes and mouth went agape as she saw the two in the room in a quite intimate position.
"Ah, sorry! I didn't mean to interrupt! I just wanted to tell you that the lunch is already prepared, bu-but it's okay, you can skip the lunch! Please continue, go ahead! Don't mind me!" Yuki said in a rush and closed the door with a slam.
"Wa-wait..." Rena replied weakly. "It's a misunderstanding..." Rena suddenly felt the urge to dig a hole and hide herself forever due to the embarassment.
Rena tried to get up and felt the weight on top of her didn't budge. "Jurina, I think it's better if we go down now..."
When she didn't hear any reply from Jurina, Rena raised her head and saw a slight frown before it turned to an unreadable expression on her puppy's face.

"Yukirin, did something happen? Your face looked a bit redder than usual." Mayuyu asked when Yukirin rushed down with a blush. The question was answered with a frantic 'no' but Yuuko, who sat in the other side of the table, knows better, waaay better.
Yuuko grins and butted in to the conversation. "It's obvious that something happened! Like you said before, something that is...inappropiate." Yuuko's grin widen, and soon turned into a perverted smile.
The comment made Yuki's face went even redder as she remembered the things she saw.
"It seems Jurina really liked her, ne." Haruna added with a smile. "Maybe she even already chose Rena to be her partner!"
"Partner? What partner?"
Rena's voice pierced through the air and gained the others attention. She stopped her tracks few meters from the table with Jurina tagging along right behind herself.
"Why don't you ask her yourself?" Yuuko pointed to the blushing and nervous puppy behind Rena.
DING DONG!
"Ah, I'll get it." Yuki immediately stood up, but was halted by Yuuko's stern voice.
"Wait Yukirin. I'll go." Yuuko got up and followed by Mayu.
As they were out of the other's hearing reach, Mayu whispered, "Who's it? How come they got so near without you noticing?"
"It's Mariko's smell, but it's faint. No wonder I didn't notice her until she's this near." Yuuko smirked. "She's cunning like always, maybe they already found a way to deceive my sense of smell?"
Mayu frowned, but kept silent.
Yuuko opened the door, and right as her premonition, a tall woman was standing in front of her, smiling.
"Hi." Yuuko geeeted with a smile, but her tone said otherwise.
"Yuuko, Mayuyu! So it was you two after all, Acchan was right, you two still didn't change since the last time we met!" Mariko spoke cheerfully with a big smile. Normally that would indicated as a pleasant greeting, but when it came to her, it meant she has something up.
Mayu put a fake smile, she'll not be beaten easily in a battle of wits, even with an opponent like Mariko. "Why hello there, Mariko-sama. To what do we owe the pleasure of this visit?"
"Yeah, please make it quick. We're still in a middle of a lunch." Yuuko shoo-ed the visitor immediately.
"Oh, wonderful! I haven't had a lunch! Do you think it's okay for me to join?" Mariko clasped her fingers and gave them a thousand watt smile.
"No." Yuuko abruptly went to close the door. Before the door was closed, Mariko use her hand to halt it. Her face serious, no trace of the previous jokes was seen in her face.
"What, you wanna fight?" Yuuko gave a warning glare, she wouldn't hesitate to beat even an old friend of hers.
"No, but I want to talk with Jurina. I know she's inside."
"And why you think that we'll let you do as you please?" Mayu challenged as her pupils started glowing.
"I came without intention to fight or force my way to get Jurina back. I just want to talked to her...Please don't make me use violence as I do not like to dirty my hand. Please let me in to have a little chat with Jurina." Mariko stated calmly, her lips form a thin smile. It was not an empty threat.
Yuuko and Mayu didn't budge. Instead, their pupils already changed it's color to golden. Ready to pummel the threat in front of them any moment she did something suspicious..
"Fine. You asked this yourself." Mariko took a deep breath.
"OOOIII!! JURINA!! COME TO THE FRONT DOOR!!" Mariko released a shout that made the two in front of her flinched.
A dash could be heard from the inside as the puppy arrived. Her smile beamed as she saw the person standing before her.
"Mari-chan!" Jurina glomped the guest without any warning. "How come you find me so easily?"
"Silly, you forgot we have two other hounds that has tracking ability on par as Yuuko's?" Mariko ruffled the puppy's hair, while sending a challenging look the other two.
"Wait, Mari-chan. You didn't come here to bring me back, did you?" Jurina frowned and released the older girl immediately.
"Well yes of course I want to bring you back. But as your sister, I won't ask you to do something unwillingly. Didn't I already promise about that way long time ago?" Mariko pinched Jurina's cheek making the younger girl pouted. "But please let me talk to you first. I found a good cafe with delicious chocolate parfait, why don't we go and have a chat there?"
"Yay! Choco-parfait!"
"Jurina?"
The puppy turned back and saw Rena coming from inside along with Yuki.
"Rena-chan! Ah, let me introduce you, this is Mari-chan!" Jurina then pointed at the other two, "Mari-chan, this is Rena-chan and Yukirin!"
"It's a pleasure to meet you in person, Kashiwagi-himesama." Mariko bowed a little, surprising everyone.
"Eh? You already know her?" Jurina asked everyone's question.
"Of course. The sole daughter from the politician who ran for prefectural governor of Tokyo, Kashiwagi Genzo." Mariko smiled widely, making Mayu's scowl deepened. "She's also known for her angelic voice and often take parts in a charity concert for her father's campaign."
"Wow Yukirin, you're that famous?!" Jurina's mouth went agape, and the news shocked both Rena and Yuuko. It seemed only Mayu that's aware of that fact.
"And you..." Mariko pointed to Rena and trailed off, she tilted her head slightly."I never saw you before. May I ask who are you?"
Jurina ran off and hugged Rena's arm. "She's my savior, Mari-chan! She saved me when I fainted and gave me shelter and food~"
"Oh, I apologize for my rudeness. I sincerely thank you for saving Jurina." Mariko bowed down again.
"Nee nee, Mari-chan! Can Rena-chan also go with us for the Choco-parfait?"
Mariko eyed Rena and inspected her from the top to bottom before nodded. "Sure. I don't see why not. If they want, everyone's invited for the treat."
"No, thanks. You three have fun." Mayu declined firmly.
"I see, now, shall we go, kiddo?" Mariko led Jurina who drag Rena to her car. Being dragged by Jurina. Rena threw a worried glance towards Mayu asking for a help which went unanswered.
Mariko stopped a bit before she revved her car's engine and rolled down her car's window. "By the way Yuuko, tell Nyaro I said hi!"
"Nah! She'll way better without you mixed in her life!" Yuuko shouted back.
Mariko just smirked hearing Yuuko answer, but soon her smirk turned into a sad smile as she saw a certain figure peeking from a window in the first floor. Clearing her thoguht from any hesitation, she hit the accelerator pedal and sped up.
Back in the villa Yuuko confronted Mayu about her decision to let Jurina and Rena go with Mariko.
"Are you sure it's okay to let them be alone? We don't know what they planned, they can always abduct Jurina or something despite Mariko's promise not to use violence!"
"Don't worry, I won't let that happened." Mayu's answered calmly. "It's just if we go along with them we won't be able to clear the surrounding and we absolutely will be disadvantaged if there's an ambush."
"Well, that's true...So, what's the plan?"
"Gather your things. We'll spy them."

Rena felt like an alien as she sat with Jurina and Mariko sat in the opposite side of the table, yet she found herself couldn't participate in their conversation at all. The way Jurina and Mariko talked looked like they knew each other since forever.
Thump. Rena started to feel a weird sensation in her chest.
Seeing Jurina smile and interactied so close with Mariko kinda made her uneasy...why?
As she pondered, Mariko spoke as she noticed the slight frown that appeared on Rena's face.
"Ne, Rena-chan...wasn't it?"
"Ha-hai?"
"I'm sorry to leave you uninterested in our conversation. It's just, I kinda missed talking with Jurina after she disappeared from our place." Mariko chuckled and earned a pout from the puppy.
"N-No, really, don't mind me. Please, continue." Rena answered immediately, heck, she even shouldn't be here in the first place.
"Right, ah, that's right. I haven't introduced myself properly, have I? The name's Shinoda Mariko. Due to circumstances, Jurina's been under my care for a long time. She's like a younger sister to me. Therefore, again I sincerely thanked you for helping Jurina the other day." Mariko ended her sentence with a dashing smile.
That words made Rena blush a little, yet a smile was formed in her lips. "You're welcome, Shinoda-san."
"Mariko is fine. So, let's get to the point, did you happen to know about Jurina's...special condition?"
Rena nodded her head slowly.
"How much did you know?"
Rena started to tell Mariko about everything she heard from Yuuko and Mayu. Maybe she can have more information from Mariko, since she seemed more open about their condition.
"I see. So, kiddo," Mariko got Jurina's attention immediately, "As much as you're a kissing monster and love to hug people, you seemed to gave more attention than usual to her. You always threw a glance to her once in a while and have this goofy smile, even as you talked with me."
That statement made Jurina blushed immediately.
"Are you planning to make Rena-chan as your partner?" The blush on Jurina's face deepened, as she fidgeted in her seats.
Rena shivered a little as she saw the smirk on Mariko's face.
"Oh? And judging from Rena-chan's plain reaction, you haven't tell her anything, have you? Did you plan to do a pre-emptive strike? You bad girl." Mariko smirked went wider as Jurina's blush went bordering to purple.
"Um, ano...what partner?" That partner discussion pique her interest. She remembered she even heard Haruna said it back in the villla.
"Partner? Ah how to describe it, hmm...You see, like, mating? Jurina's in those adolescent age, it's common to have the urge to finding a proper partner for 'us'." Mariko said with a straight face.
"Mariko-sama!" Jurina shout immediately, oh boy, this wouldn't end well on her side.
Rena felt her face burned as she finally understood what that partner means. She took a peek to the puppy who sat beside her and saw a shy, blushing, and a guilty puppy eyes. That looks almost made her heart almost burst out from her ribcage.
Rena stood abruptly, "I-I need to use restroom, please excuse me." Rena ran away from the scene, she need to take a break for her hot face and rapid heartbeat. She didn't even sure herself she'll be able to look at Jurina in a same way ever again.
As Rena ran off, Jurina pouted at Mariko. "Mou Mariko-sama! Why did you surprise Rena-chan like that? How if she hate me now? How if she doesn't want to be near me again? How if--"
"Hush, kiddo. Sooner or later she'll know about it. Don't fuss over small things like this." Mariko silenced Jurina nonchalantly.
"So, what do you want to talk with me, Mariko-sama? You even drive Rena-chan away." Jurina's face turned serious. She may be a clingy happy go lucky puppy, but her perceptions are still better than most people.
"Right. I'll be blunt." Mariko took a deep breath and stare at Jurina's eyes. "Please go back with me."
"No."
"Why?"
No answer.
"You'll be hunted."
"I already am."
"Is this about your dream to see the world? I'll do something about it, I promise. I don't want you to get hurt. You have so much potential to be the next generation's Ace."
"Mari-chan...this is not only about my dream...I..." Jurina trailed off, hesitation could be felt from her voice.
"Is it about her?"
Jurina nodded slowly. "I...She accepted me, even though I was seen as a monster by most of people. I even ran away and abandonded her. I sacrificed her for my dream and left her to danger. Even so...she helped me back. I...I don't want to be separated from Rena-chan..."
"You'll expose her to an unmeasurable danger, Jurina..."
"I'll protect her. There are Yuuko-san, Mayuyu, and Kojiharu too."
"You know they won't always be there to protect you and Rena."
"Even so, I'll protect her. Even if it costs my life." The determination in Jurina's voice made Mariko sigh.
"It seems I can't change your opinion." Mariko hang her head and smile at her defeat,
"Ja...please excuse us. It's great to be able to talk to you like this, Mariko-sama. I'm happy you'r not an enemy." Jurina stood up as she saw Rena walked nearing their table.
"Bye bye Mariko-sama!" As she bid her farewell, Jurina ran off the older Matsui.
"Rena-chan!" Jurina bounced with the usual high energy and shining smile.
The greeting made Rena blush, yet she didn't answer the younger girl. That made the smile fell from Jurina's mouth immediately.
"Uh...let's go back?" Jurina said and this time it was replied with a timid nod.
They just walked away silently, with Rena avoiding any eye contact and conversation.
Feeling guilty with the awkward atmosphere, Jurina decided to come clean to the older girl. She stopped her tracks and face the older girl.
"Rena-chan, I-I'm sorry if I made you felt uneasy about the p-partner thing." Jurina felt her face went hot at an alarming speed as she confess her feelings, "I promise I won't force myself to you! B-but, I-If you find myself disgusting and doesn't want to be near me..." Jurina's voice went smaller and smaller as she didn't want to even think about that possibility, tears started to formed in her eyes.
"Don't cry. Don't talk about yourself like that..." Rena's soft voice made Jurina raised her head and saw a blushing, but smiling face. "It's just...I..."
"Don't worry, I will wait for Rena-chan..."
The exchange made both of them blushed furiously, and a warm feeling started to dwell in their chests. As a burden was lift from her shoulders, Jurina shyly went to grab Rena's hand and entwined their fingers together, slowly, preparimg to let it go immediately should she felt any resistance from the other girl.
As their fingers interlaced with each others, another gush of warmth went from their hands to their hearts.

Back to Mariko in the cafe. Her smile never wavered even as she saw the two other girls walked with their hands holding each others.
"So, have you remembered her scent?" Mariko asked in a little loud voice. Enough to made the table behind her to hear, but not to attract more attention from the other guests in the cafe.
"Ah, pretty clear." A deep voice stated.
"She's quite a beauty too. Jurina really have done her homework." Another said in a cheerful voice.
"I'm really worried that she'll copy your bad habits, Sae."
"Mou, Sayakaaa! You sounded like I teached a bad things to her."
"You did. By the way Mariko, Yuuko and Mayu are spying on us from the building in front of us. But it didn't seem like they recognize me and Sae." The girl called Sayaka said as she removed her glasses disguise.
"Yup, the perfume really helped a lot! It made our scent disappeared completely! Even Yuuko wouldn't be able to recognize our scent unless she's very near."
"That's good to hear. Saa, you know what you're supposed to do, right?"
Two tall girls stood behind Mariko's table and walked away.
"Ah, let's the hunt begin."

Seeing the two figure went away, Mariko just smiled and leaned back the her chair. She took her mobile and dialed a number.
"Hello? Ah yes, as expected, she declined me." Mariko chuckled.
"Hmm hmm, we'll proceed with the next stage of the experiment to test the theory. Don't worry, I'll keep my eyes on them."
"Don't worry, everything's went smoothly as planned."

Nah, I read and watch a lot of manga and anime no the setting just feel nostalgic. I told you, a mixture. XD And I just found this fic really interesting, that's why I asked if it's from a specific manga or anime. Cuz mostly the fics are based off sth if not a mixture.

Jurina seemed pretty embarrassed though about Rena learning about the 'partner' thing. Will she continue her advances like cuddling to her in sleep like before now that she's afraid of scaring Rena away?
I love that you included Mariko's and Jurina's sisterly relationship as well. She brought up a valid point by mentioning that Rena will be in danger due to her connection to Jurina and indeed it looks like they've now gained attention of her and will be after her in order to catch Jurina... (Yet secretly I wish for situations where Jurina will be able to protect her, lol.)

Jurina seems to have regained her vigor quickly and even after the uncomfortable situation with Rena she managed to hold her hand shyly. Yet I assume that she will probably tone down her affections a bit and be unsure whether to crawl into Rena's bed again tonight or not. XD
Rena herself will obviously notice this yet is still unsure how to deal with her own feelings. Nevertheless I hope that she will not get all defensive now during that awkward situation. XD

The repeating sounds woke Rena up. It's already became a daily occurence for her to be woken up like this. For her, Matsui Rena, to be woken up with a certain clinging puppy latched herself on her body.
She felt her puppy girl nuzzled against her chest and felt a silly grin formed on her puppy's face. Rena sighed mentally and moved her hand to pry the puppy off of her.
'I wonder what she dreamt...with those grin on her face...'
At first when she found out Jurina always sneaked on her bed to cuddle every night, Rena always voiced her disagreement, which was easily bribed with Jurina's pleading puppy eyes. As it became a daily occurence Rena started to deal and live with it. But she certainly wouldn't admit that it kinda nice to have a warm cuddly puppy every now and then.
She got up from her bed and headed to the bathroom. After undressing herself, she let the warm shower loosen her sore muscle and freshen her body.
Rena let out a soft sigh. Until when the circumstances will continue? It's not that she have anything against the puppy living under the same roof with her, yet she have this unsettling feeling in her chest...which has gone worse after she met with Mariko several days ago.
She felt like she was being watched.
'But...probably it's just my imagination...' Rena closed her eyes and let herself be immersed in the warmth.

"Rena-chaan...?"
Jurina stirred and fumble with the bedsheet for a while. Her heart sank a bit when she didn't find the warmth that's supposed to be there.
The soft drizzle from the bathroom made a small smile back on her beautiful face. Even though it didn't stay there for long.
She remembered her conversation with Mayu few days ago.
"Nee nee, Mayu, what were you doing after you escaped?"
Mayu looked up and gave Jurina a look before she went back to her gadget. "I wandered aimlessly for a while before I met Yukirin..." She paused a little and smiled softly, "After Yukirin picked me off of the street, I kind of became her secretary."
She blushed a little, wow. That made Jurina became more eager to dig more story from her friend.
"Secretary? So as her secretary you always have to be together with Yukirin all the time, right? Sound's like a mate. Maybe I can be Rena-chan's secretary too..." She finishes off with a dreamy grin.
Mayu rolled her eyes, this puppy really need a good lesson for common knowledge. Not that she blamed her, since she knew learning by books is quite different than to learn by oneself in the society. Not to mention the puppy beside her is not in a good term with books.
"Well, no, duh. It's not the same. Haven't you read anything about it in your books?"
"I have! Secretary is one of the many jobs one could do to survive in this cruel world! His or her job is to be a personal assistant and taking care of his or her boss."
A smile crept on the mouse's face. "Well, even though it's quite a...improper answer, it's not entirely false. Haruna became a model thanks to her asset and Yukirin's connection. Yuko was offered to become Haruna's manager, but she declined and was doing odd jobs on the street so she can gather more intel." The mouse take a look on Jurina before added, "Maybe you should start to look for a job too. I did a background check on Rena...She's an orphan, and currently are living from her scholarship with part-time jobs to cover her daily needs."
A job, huh? Maybe she'll call Mayu later to ask for an advice on how to get a job. Or she can always join Yuko on her adventurous way to get money, she heard the pay was great and she's quite confident with her physical ability. But maybe it'll made Rena worried...it seems she have to call Mayu later.
Her gaze lingered on the bathroom gaze a few seconds longer than it should. Part of her want to join the older girl, yet the more reasonable part of her decided not to. She did promise to take things slowly after all. She sighed and hugged her knees. What to do now...

The doorbell interrupted Jurina's thought. She knew better not to open the door to random person visit, so she opted to peep the visitor first. Who knows it was Acchan again, or Takamina, or the others... Hopefully not, since she didn't sense any danger from the visitor. Maybe it was a delivery service.
There standing in front of Rena's apartment door is a quite handsome man dressed in a butler suit. Whoa. It was unexpected.
"Jurina, who's that?" Rena spoke from inside, her soft step gradually went louder as she went to the front door. The sight that greeted Jurina was, how to describe it? Breath-taking, mouth-watering, mind-blowing, and more. The other girl was clad in a tank top and shorts that accentuated her figure nicely.
Nice as in very, very nice.
Her slightly damp hair, warmth radiated over her skin, and the fresh smell of the shampoo invading her nose.
Yep, very nice indeed.
Unfortunately Jurina's too busy to admire the other girl to think of more compliment in her head, let alone say it.
"Jurina?" The way she moved, the way she tilted her head is sooo adorable. The way she waved her hand is...
"Are you there?"
"Uh..." her cheeks flushed. "Un, yeah?" and the blood roaming freely, painting the puppy's face red.
Rena rolled her eyes on Jurina's antics and opened the door. She felt the puppy's stare still following her closely.
"Nishi-nishi?"
"Oh, hi! Uhh, are you busy today?" the butler greeted warmly. The puppy inside tilted her head to have a better look. Butler or not, if he plan to snatch Rena-chan away...he'll have to cross her first.
"Not really, I have class later in the late afternoon, but other than that, I'm free. Why?"
"Actually..." The butler smiled sheepishly, "I need some help, we're kind of short-handed at the moment."

The cafe bustled with life and joy. And cheers.
Loud cheers.
"Kyaaaaah!"
"Nishi-nishi! Look here please!"
"Airi~n! You're so cool! Please be my boyfriend??"
"Kuu-chan, Kuu-chan, sit with me please!"
And full of overjoyed girls and young woman. Jurina peeked at the entrance where there's lot of curious girls peeked over and giggled. Wow.
"Jurina, what are you looking at?" Rena asked as she adjusted her vest.
"Are Nishi-nishi and the others very famous?" She learned this morning that Nishi-nishi is actually a female, graduated student from the same university. Actually, she's the previous president of the drama club. And after she graduated, she opened a cafe on her own and hire some of the students for the waiter / waitress. Scratch that, not a waiter or waitress, but butler and maid.
"Well, they became instantly famous after the cafe they opened boomed in the festival last year." Churi answered. Churi herself dressed in a frilly French maid dress. She handed a set of black suit to Jurina. "Jurina, here's your suit. I finally found one spare that fits you."
"Ehh, why do I have to wear a suit?"
"Jurina. You're the one who offered to help. Wear it." Rena slipped on her suit and tied her silky black hair into a low ponytail. She looked at the mirror to make sure her appearance flawless and throw several confident smile. After satisfied with how her smile looks, Rena looked back at her puppy and smiled. "After all, this month's theme is Danso Cafe."

"Kyaaaaaah~~!!!"
Another chorus echoed as Rena entered the cafe and starting to taking order from the customer.
"Whoa, Rena-chan also very famous, isn't she?" Jurina giggled as she adjusted her tie. Her Rena-chan is beautiful most the time, but when she put her mind into, she can also be very charming young butler.
"Hehe, she and Nishi-nishi is the most wanted butler when we opened the cafe in the festival lt year. They became so famous that our drama club got a lot of request to open a danso cafe regularly near our theater building, but the university shot down the idea. It's a good thing Nishi-nishi found this place."
"Churi, do I look okay?" Jurina asked as she straightened her suit, it's her first time wearing such an outfit.
If she was to judge from Churi's expression, Jurina was sure she looked good enoguh. Trying for a better service, she smirked and immediately got a blush.
"You look more than good, you look absolutely stunning!"
Churi dragged Jurina and pushed her towards the door.
"Go get 'em, tiger!"
And the chorus of excited teenagers went on another pitch for the rest of the afternoon as the puppy worked her smirk to the maximum level.
Nishi-nishi made a beeline towards Rena who were preparing an order and whispered, "Wow, that smirk worked wonder."
"Look at the customer, they're smitten instantly...hey, you okay?" Nishi-nishi's voice turned worried as she saw the slight frown appeared on the other's face.
Seeing that smile and flirty attitude directed to other people other than her made the Matsui mood sour a little. Rena never admitted that deep inside her heart she was quite a possessive one. But maybe, just maybe, that's because she never had consider anything or anyone important enough.
"Hey, don't be that jealous. Being nice to the customer is just part of the job." Nishi-nishi nudged her friend and grinned.
"I'm not jealous."
But her face clearly said otherwise.
"Interesting." Nishi-nishi thought. Rena rarely pouts, but she did when she doesn't want to admit something that she was guilt as charged.
"Right, you're not. Now bring the coffee and cake to table 3."
Rena brought the order to the respective table and looked at the clock. It's almost time for her class. Rena had discussed it earlier with Nishi-nishi and Jurina, when she went to her class, Jurina will stay and helped Nishi-nishi in the cafe until Rena finished her class and picked her up later in the evening.
Rena excused herself and went back to the locker room to change and gather her things. She need to hurry if she wants to arrive earlier and grab her textbook in the clubroom before the class started.
Nearing the campus ground, Rena immediately headed to the theater building. Once she went inside, she heard a small humming and guitar sound echoed from the hall. She cannot heard the muffled lyric, but the voice was undoubtedly beautiful. Curiously, Rena walked to find the source of the beautiful voice.
It was one of the empty music room. The light was turned on and the door was opened slightly, explaining why the melodious sound escape the room.
From the glass adoring the door, Rena found herself captivated by the voice even more.
"Jinsei wa kamihikouki
Negai nosete tonde yuku yo
Kaze no naka wo chikara no kagiri
Tada susumu dake"
It was a girl, the voice was husky but feminine. Her hair was cut short and boyish, so is her clothes that consisted of tshirt, jeans, and black leather jacket with several metal accessory adorned her appearance.
Judging from her appearance, she appeared in similar age with Rena. But her passionate voice when she sang spoke years of experience.
"Sono kyori wo kisou yori
Dou tonda ka doko wo tonda no ka
Sore ga ichiban daisetsu nanda-"
"Beautiful." She murmured unconsciously.
The guitar stopped playing as said girl opened her eyes and landed her sight upon awe-strucked Rena standing just outside the room.
And blushed.
"I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean to disturb your concentration!" Rena opened the door and went to apologize to the other girl. "But it's so beautiful! I mean, your voice is, and I unconsciously- sorry!"
"Ah, thank you." The guitar girl smiled. In a closer inspection, her eyes and red lips added more sharpness to her appearance.
"Ja- I'm on my way then, I'm really, really sorry."
"It's okay. Really."
"Um, pelase continue your practice, bye!" Rena hurriedly exited the room and walk briskly to get her textbook immediately. Face red from embarrasment, got caught up like that.
Rena never noticed that one of the girl she passed stared her back intently before walking to the direction of the music room.
"What's wrong with her, blushing like mad and walking briskly like that." A girl dressed in floral white dress entered the room and sat beside the guitar girl. "And you too Sayaka-chan, why are you blushing like that?"
"She said my voice is beautiful."
"So what? I said it all the time, but you never blushed like this! What's the difference?"
"It's the first time anyone other than you said that, Miyuki."
Miyuki pouted and encircled her arms around Sayaka's neck. Hear streak of possessiveness kicked in.
"Sayaka-chan, I'm getting jealous."
Sayaka took one of Miyuki's hand and kissed it lightly.
"There's no need to feel jealous..." Her expression turned somber. "All we have is only each other, afterall."
She felt the hug.
"Soon. Just a bit more...please bear it with me."

Project J - chapter 8. New day, new job, new threat END
Wow more than three years since my last update. I can't believe it. How are you guys <and girls>???
Tell you what, I've been repeatedly trying to write chapter 8, but honestly I forgot the plot I planned and write and rewrite it countless times. In the meantime, I fell in love with sayamilky when watching geinin. I didn't watch all the ep because show48 got shot down recently, but I've watched enough to have sayamilky fly and landed sliiiiightly just below my otp wmatsui, surpassing any other pairing I've ever seen.
So, actually I did plan sayamilky to appear in peoject J, but much much later in the story. But since the plot bunny just appeared, I decided to make a huge change and make them appear much more early and having them have a much more bigger parts in the story than initially planned.
So I have a little bit oot questions, and need a bit recommendations:
1. Where can I watch geinin eng subbed with good quality
2. Got any good sayamilky fics? I searched a bit and find them very scarce in existence
And lastly, have a good day for all of you!

Three years sure is a long time.. But seeing an update from a story we like, as a reader it still make us happy ( maybe not for all, but it sure makes me happy :) )
