Japan’s B-actioner scene remains active with one of their latest features SUKEBAN HUNTERS, the first of two feature films based on a 17-minute YAKUZA HUNTER short film from directors Kazufumi Nakahira and Shinichi Okuda. An extended NSFW trailer has just been released. The film, which pays homage to Toei’s FEMALE PRISONER #701 movies of the 1970s, stars AV model Asami (THE MACHINE GIRL) and Rena Komine. Domestic films set box office record in 2009

Thu, January 28, 2010 (5:25am EST)

On Thursday, the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (also known as Eiren) announced its data on the state of the Japanese movie industry in 2009. Box office revenues for domestic films reached an all-time high, while foreign films also saw a significant increase. Domestic film revenue increased for the second year in a row, gaining 1.3% in 2009 to hit ¥117.3 billion. Foreign films saw a drop in 2008, but they bounced back last year to ¥88.7 billion, a 12.3% improvement. These numbers help reinforce the general "hoga boom" trend in recent years, where domestic productions have been gaining a larger share of the market. Total revenue (domestic and foreign) was up 5.7% at ¥206 billion, the second-highest total in history (2004 was close to ¥211 billion). Although the number of films released (762) was lower than in 2008 (806), attendance was up from 160 million to more than 169 million.

In terms of box office grosses, the top ten domestic films were:
1. ROOKIES -Sotsugyo- (¥8.55 billion)
2. Pokemon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life (¥4.67 billion)
3. 20th Century Boys: The Last Chapter - Our Flag (¥4.41 billion)
4. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (¥4.00 billion)
5. Amalfi: Megami no Hoshu (¥3.65 billion)
6. Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser (¥3.50 billion)
7. Gokusen: The Movie (¥3.50 billion)
8. Yomei Ikkagetsu no Hanayome (¥3.15 billion)
9. Yatterman (¥3.14 billion)
10. Crows ZERO II (¥3.02 billion)

The top three foreign films were:
1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (¥8.00 billion)
2. Red Cliff: Part II (¥5.55 billion)
3. Michael Jackson's This Is It (¥5.20 billion)

Some of the movies I watched recently.

Masked Girl - A low-budget Kamen Rider ripoff with a schoolgirl. It's so corny.
My Girlfriend, The Ultimate Weapon - Based on the manga. Really boring.
Dance, Subaru! - Really good. I've liked these type of movies since I was a kid.
Saigo No Yakusoku - TV movie with Arashi. I really liked it. And it was fun trying to guess which one of them five was the terrorist. Yeah, I guessed wrong.
Dororo - Based on Osamu Tezuka's comic about a guy in the sengoku period that needed to kill 48 demons to get his body parts back. Very entertaining. There was supposed to be 2 more sequel movies planned.
Amalfi Rewards Of The Goddess - Kidnap, chase around the city movie. It has a great cast. The movie itself is alright, nothing great though.
Detroit Metal City - Really funny stuff. My fave part was when a girl rock band was playing and he jumped down with a metal chain (against his own will). Guess what happens? XD

Title: The Harimaya Bridge
Post by: Saburo on April 27, 2010, 04:29:57 AM
Saw HARIMAYA BRIDGE on Sunday. So-so experience. Standard "Japan in the sticks" cinematography. Difficult to watch Japanese actors reciting Japanese dialog that was likely translated from English and being directed from an American POV. Story uneven and most of the characters weren't very believable but that might be me. Plenty tranquil moments inspired by bobora cinema. The kind of movie that's good for something like HIFF or high school social studies but kind of inferior when compared to The Rest (e.g. OKURIBITO).

Ultimately the feel is more Japanese than American and that's reflected in the credits, three-quarters of which are Japanese in origin (incl funding, sponsorship). And a good theme song by misono, who played kawaii to the hilt!

shit this looks dope man, like psycho thriller, everyone driving like madmen! “Shikeidai no Elevator” 死刑台のエレベーター

Elevator to the Gallows (2010) Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ0ebAiMhcI#)

anything with Hiroshi Abe is awesome.

Well duh, it's a remake of the French movie of the same name. Also features Saori Hara, the porn star??

Akira Ogata (Boy’s Choir, The Milkwoman) is set to direct Shikeidai no Elevator, a Japanese remake of Louis Malle’s 1957 French film “Ascenseur pour l’échafaud” (Elevator to the Gallows) with the blessing of the late director’s son, Manuel Cuotemoc Malle.

In the original version, Maurice Ronet plays an ex-Foreign Legion parachutist named Julien and Jeanne Moreau plays his lover, Florence. Together they hatch a plan for Julien to murder Florence’s husband in his office and then execute the perfect getaway by rappelling out the window. Instead, a simple mistake leads to him getting trapped in an elevator over night as a young couple steals his car and Florence mistakenly believes he’s taken off with another woman.

In the new version, Hiroshi Abe will play a charming doctor and Michiko Kichise will play the wife of a medical company president. The young couple will be played by Keiko Kitagawa and Tetsuji Tamayama.

“Shikeidai no Elevator” is slated for release in Japan next Fall.

The Negotiator. Couldn't stand up to its great tv series iteration. Very unoriginal stuff.
Saru Lock fared a little better, but not much.

Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Which was a little more entertaining.

And Mutant Girl Squad. Which I actually liked, with its funny and over-the-top action.
It had 3 directors, try and see the difference they bring to the chapters.

One of my 'guilty pleasure' movies, no why idea why I like it so much, good film but for some reason probably seen it close to 20 times. First it was a novel, then an anime, magna and then a movie, sort of an unknown film but really quite interesting, nice change of pace if you're looking for something different. :yep:

I think I had this post in the wrong forum/thread so hopefully it fits better here.

Was looking forward to Gantz until I got to the theater for the "world premiere" and it was DUBBED by people who sounded nothing like the actors and seemed to have no grasp of either Japanese or English!  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:      :panic: :panic:

Most of the ppl who would see such a movie were either Japanese or fans of the actors (Ninomiya Kazunari, Matsuyama Kenichi, Natsuna, Yoshitaka Yuriko, Kanata Hongo, etc) or manga so the decision to dub it (with talking donkeys) could have only been conceived by a moron.

Never again will I see a foreign film in the theaters without checking if it's got the original audio with or without subs first.  I will save my final assessment of Gantz until I see the Japanese audio version but the dubs made it feel like a bad kung-fu movie (Kung Pow maybe?) or an episode of Iron Chef.

Looking forward to: Ashita no Joe, Uchuu Senkan Yamato, Koukou Debut, Moshi Dora, Manzai Gang, Paradise Kiss, Patisserie Coin de rue, Shikeidai no Elevator and obviously the AKB movie

Just finished Kokuhaku.  Amazing movie but not really something you could watch over and over again.  Oscar ppl prove once again why I never give a crap about who got nominated or who won one since Kokuhaku didn't make the final 5 nominees for Foreign Film.

Wonder if they put the AKB posters/video in there to imply something or just because they're super popular.

A friend pimped this list (http://jfilmpowwow.blogspot.com/2011/01/toronto-j-film-pow-wow-top-100-favorite.html) on his FB.  I'm wary of aggregation because it's hard to get a sense of the individualism in this project, which I value most in criticism (which is why I disdain and mistrust places like Rotten Tomatoes). I suppose I should be grateful "Battle Royale" wasn't selected #1 by acclimation.

Pretty disappointed after watching the first SP movie.
It was just soooo slow. Think it only had 2 action scenes in the whole thing.
Even though it's just a build-up for the 2nd movie (and a re-intro for new viewers), they could've at least tried to make it entertaining.

And it's littered with dreaded flashbacks... and flashbacks of flashbacks... I know already, you've flashbacked the same scene like 5 times in 20 minutes!

SP 2nd movie trailer looked good though... I'm so easy~ :sweatdrop:

Just saw Patisserie Coin De Rue at the local film festival and loved it! Mostly because of Aoi Yuu being super adorable!
I want her to yell at me in Kagoshima-ben and bake me a cake!  She basically steals the show but there's tons of food porn too!
I wonder if Eguchi Noriko's being typecast as a bitch (I only remember her in 1 Pound Gospel) but either way she's a flawless bitch in this film also.

New Hikari movie coming out real soon. :)
Today, actress Mitsushima Hikari and director Shimizu Takashi attended the preview screening of their upcoming horror movie, “Rabbit Horror 3D“.

It’s the first horror movie for Mitsushima, who’s  received many ‘Best New Actress’ awards in film festivals worldwide. At the event, she confessed that she is actually quite a timid person. She said, “I don’t like horror movies. I watched one once during junior high school and I couldn’t sleep for a whole week.”

So how did she come to accept the role? Mitsushima explained, “When I read the script, something in my mind told me that I should participate in this movie and that’s why I accepted the offer.”

She then went to describe the movie in her own words, saying, “When watching the movie you don’t go like ‘A ghost! Ahh!’; instead, it feels more like a daydream. I really love this movie. I hope many people will watch it and love it just as much as I do.”

During the second half of the stage greeting, a child with white make-up (similar to Shimizu’s horror masterpiece “Ju-on: The Grudge“) went up on stage and handed some flowers to the rabbit mascot standing next to the actors, as if it were passing the torch to its successor. This odd little moment was supposed to show that Shimizu tried to create a new masterpiece that could follow in the footsteps of “Ju-on”.

When Mitsushima was asked whether she watched “Ju-on”, she immediately replied, “I could never watch such a movie! It’s too scary…” Director Shimizu couldn’t help but show a bitter smile on his face.

“Rabbit Horror 3D” will open in Japan on September 17th.

On August 30th, a special party celebrating the completion of the film adaptation of  “Moteki” was held in Roppongi, Tokyo.

The movie stars actors Moriyama Mirai, who will play the movie’s protagonist, as well as his co-stars Nagasawa Masami, Asou Kumiko, Naka Riisa, and Maki Youko. The story chronicles the experience of Fujimoto Yukiyo, a thirty-year-old temporary worker who has never had much luck with women but suddenly finds himself becoming very popular with the ladies. “Last year up until this year was the most popular with ladies I’d been in my entire life,” Moriyama said jokingly.

“Moteki” was a regular series in the Kodansha serialization “Evening” from 2008 to 2010, and ended with a total of 180 chapter across four volumes. The manga inspired a successful drama series of the same name that aired for several months last year, and also featured Moriyama as the lead. For the movie adaptation, Fujimoto graduates from being a temporary work and starts a new life as a writer on a news site utilizing a completely original story written by Kobo Mitsurou himself. Now thirty-one years old, Fujimoto experiences yet another “moteki” (period of time when one is popular with the opposite sex) and attracts four completely different women.

In the movie, Nagasawa Masami plays a cute magazine editor named Matsuo Miyuki who gets to know Fujimoto over Twitter, and also possesses a “murderous smile”. Asou Kumiko will join in as Miyuki’s close friend Masumoto Rumiko, a simple and naive woman who “reverse confesses” to Fujimoto. Ai, a mysterious woman who works at a girls bar and “reverse proposes” to the lucky main character, will be played by Naka Riisa. Lastly, Maki Youko will charm viewers with her character Karaki Motoko, a woman with a vicious mouth and a propensity for dirty jokes.

The main theme song is titled “Disco“, and will be provided by Jooubachi. “Yoake no BEAT“, the FUJIFABRIC song that served as the opening theme to the drama, will return for a reprise role as the opening track for the movie. “It’s a movie so packed with J-POP and J-ROCK that you’ll enjoy how we ended up whittling it down,” Moriyama said brightly about the upcoming film.

“Moteki” will hit theaters on September 23rd.

Director Masato Harada's "Waga Haha no Ki " / わが母の記( English title "Chronicle of My Mother"), a film based on an autobiographical novel by Yasushi Inoue, has been awarded a special jury award at the 35th Montreal World Film Festival on Aug 28.  Koji Yakusho plays the novelist, and Kirin Kiki play the mother. Aoi Miyazaki works once again with Yakusho, playing his daughter. The film is scheduled to be released next year in Japan. Harada released a statement: "I was very pleased to hear such bright news amid the gloomy atmosphere in Japan. It's a privilege that people in Montreal felt empathy for the story of family ties."

Saw Gantz Perfect Answer. A few great action scenes. A little slowdown. Romance spots.. um. :P
Totally sways away from the manga and anime storylines though.
The movie's character changes (also lack of time describing their backstory) softened the edginess of the story alot too. I kinda liked how Kurono evolved from selfish, reckless, horny, coward guy (aka normal human) to team leader/hero. Taking that away makes it harder to connect to him.

But overall it was still a pretty cool movie. :)

Higanjima - Bunch of teenagers going to an island to find a missing brother and kill vampires. Watched it cos it had Ikemen Desune's Takimoto Miori.
It was surprisingly good. I was expecting it to be one of those corny "gushing blood" movies, but I think it's more along the area of CG/action summer flick quality.

Wasn't as boring as the previous, cos it had a few nicer action scenes. Still, it just doesn't have the charm of the series.
Actually the movie adaptions of most jdramas I can remember all have snorefest slow pacing and don't do the series justice. Darn... SPEC is coming soon... ;)

Ayase Haruka is currently visiting Rome, Italy with Fujiki Naohito to film for their upcoming movie “Hotaru no Hikari” which is scheduled to be released in early summer 2012. In recently released photos, Ayase appearedin a wedding dress. As reported previously, this is the movie adaptation of popular TV drama.

The movie will feature the bustling honeymoon of Hotaru(Ayase) and her husband Takano(Fujiki) in Rome. They filmed at famous places for “Roman Holiday“, and just like Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, they were driving around the city  on a scooter Vespa.

Many tourists’ eyes were riveted on those “Japanese Hepburn&Gregory.” Fujiki felt a bit shy about that and said, “I was embarrassed to have pictures taken of me.“ On the other hand, Ayase seemed just happy with her first overseas filming and said, “It’s amazing filming in Rome in a wedding dress!”

As Ayase said that she and Fujiki are attuned to each other through its drama series, they make a perfect pair.

Ayase said, “I wish this movie will attract the young generation who don’t know “Roman Holiday”, and make them want to go to Rome.” Fujiki also commented with full of spirits, “Wherever we film, Rome make it into a great scene. With this great location, I want to make a wonderful movie.”

They will continue filming in Rome until the beginning of October.

Yoshino san, yeah, that was a really fine film. Ryunosuke Kamiki was brilliiant, and Mayuko Fukoda was adorable. Have to say though, the top performance was turned in by the late Yoshio Harada- the film would not have been the same without Harada playing that part. Ryoko Hirosue had a very small part, but of course, she played it perfectly.
Besides the dramatic story line, and fine acting, the oldies music was another big feature of this film.

Now on a related note, The Daily Yomiuri's Makota Fukuda has just written another great feature article for the DYWEEKEND section, an interview with Ryunosuke:

Finding his voice / Child actor Kamiki is all grown up, ready for more
There was a time when Ryunosuke Kamiki was known as "that cute child actor." Even now, many people's image of him probably comes from movies like Yokai Daisenso (The Great Yokai War). But that little boy is already 18 years old.

In Toaru Hikushi eno Tsuioku (Recollections of a certain pilot), which premiered Oct. 1, he voices a role older than he is, marking an important step in his growth as an actor. Recently, Kamiki spoke candidly to The Yomiuri Shimbun about his thoughts on his career.

The first time I saw "Kamiki-kun" in the flesh was in November 2004 at NTV's Shiodome headquarters in Tokyo for the premier of Howl's Moving Castle. He was just the cutest thing as he tried to cut the tape, a true angel. Audiences were enthralled with Kamiki in his touching role on the TBS Sunday drama Aikurushii (So lovely) and as the lively main character of NTV's Tantei Gakuen Q (Detective school Q).

"The other day, a junior high school student said to me, 'You've really gotten big.' People's opinions of me seem to have been put on pause a while ago," said Kamiki with a wry laugh. "It's not that I want to erase any of their memories, but I want to carve a new image on top of that."........

Some shots of Mayuko from the Little DJ movie which I really praised above, it really does deserve it, even Ryunosuke Kamiki who can be quite annoying at times was quite good. Mayuko is young but is creeping up in age now, she's 17 and has done so, so many things so far, some may also remember her from playing the young Momoko in the Kamikaze Girls film, if she's not the biggest star in Japan in a few years, then, then.... :(  :panic:

Title: KAASAN, MOM'S LIFE
Post by: Saburo on October 17, 2011, 12:14:10 AM
Went to see "Mainichi Kaasan (http://www.hiff.org/program/films/detail/kaasan_moms_life_2011)" yesterday at our lil'l film festival. Good drama, surprising to see Kyonkyon paired with her ex-husband, Nagase Masatoshi.

I think Koizumi Kyoko has replaced Tanaka Yoshiko as "Japan's Mom."

Every Kotani film is worth seeing, hasn't done a real lot of them which is a shame but concentrates more on the quality of them either as a director or writer. :thumbsup Seen Eri in quite a few things, she's always a top notch actress and too underrated.

On October 20th, director Mitani Koki, actress Fukatsu Eri, and comedian Kinoshita Takayuki attended the special screening of their movie “Suteki na Kanashibari” at New York City’s Academy Theater at Lighthouse International.

Mitani first went to New York with his movie “Radio no Jikan: Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald” (1997). His fame grew when his “TALK LIKE SINGING” became the first original Japanese musical to be performed at Off-Broadway in 2009. Fans  urged him to come back to New York to introduce his latest work, “Suteki na Kanashibari”.

More than 1,500 people tried to get a ticket for one of 200 seats at the Academy Theater and watch the movie with English subtitles. After the screening, the three stars went on stage and greeted the audience. Adorably, Mitani said in English, “Can you guys understand my English? I don’t even know what I’m saying myself.”

Mitani also prepared a short script for Fukatsu for the stage greeting, who delivered the lines perfectly. She said, “Since my childhood I’ve loved American movies. The movie that made me want to become an actress was ‘Planet of the Apes‘,” causing everyone in the theatre to laugh.

A fan wanted to know how Mitani was able to get so many wonderful actors for his works all the time, and he proudly replied, “It’s all thanks to my personal virtue.”

It was a fun and memorable event for fans of Mitani and Japanese cinema in general. Everyone also seems to have enjoyed the movie in every extent. One female fan commented with sparkling eyes, “It was such a lovely movie! I love all of the characters.” A male fan added, “It was a wonderful movie! He always creates such different worlds with plenty of layers overlapping each other, and, in the end, makes them become one. That moment, that magic, is just so deep.”

“Suteki na Kanashibari” will open in theatres in Japan on October 29th.

Talking about Kotani in the above post ^^ and how good he is, here's probably his best known movie, Uchoten Hotel, which really is a must watch, one of the most incredible casts ever. 8)

And his follow up to that movie, sort of flew under the radar but it really is a minor classic with another collection of actors, The Magic Hour. :)

First of all, I am stone cold in love with Eri Fukatsu- from the JR CM she did years ago, and ever since, she has had me mesmerized.

...."A fan wanted to know how Mitani was able to get so many wonderful actors for his works all the time, and he proudly replied, “It’s all thanks to my personal virtue.”...."
The cast lists are incredible in his movies......and notice all the repeat performers.....he was joking around in his comment above, but when you see top talents continuing to work with a director, it is a testament to his abilities.

okay, muppet is beginning to get that holiday feeling, so here is a very young Eri, in probably one of the most memorable Japanese CM's ever:

^^ Now that's an oldie. 8)
Hardly ever use the word 'spunky' but that seems to suit her quite well, :yep: she's really a top notch actress and quite a looker too, she's the only thing which made Bayside Shakedown somewhat bearable. :( Had heard of this film but didn't know much about it, she's in it along with an A+ cast, think this needs a watch ASAP! :panic:

Akira Emoto  柄本明, who appears in the above 2010 film "Villian" (悪人 / Akunin) as the grieving father, is one of the busiest character actors around. Besides appearing in Villian, he was cast in  11 other films in 2010, and nine films in 2011. Guess when he tells his wife he will be working late tonight, he isn't kidding.
I just saw one of his 2011 films, 神様のカルテ / Kamisama no Karute (God's Chart), aka "In His Chart". He plays a doctor who is mentor to the character played by the lead actor Sho Sakurai (he of Arashi fame).
Sakurai san certainly can hold his own as an actor, and does not need to lean on his pop fame, but it doesn't hurt the box office when he is cast in a role. Also, lovely Aoi Miyazaki  turns in a great supporting role as the wife of Sakurai's character, a young doctor who struggles with the overload of patients he must take care of.
Big shout outs for a wonderful supporting cast (as is common in Japanese cinema) including Jun Kaname, Yoshinori Okada, and special mention to Taizo Harada, who continually steps up to the plate when he leaves his comedian job to take a role in a dramatic film.
But BIG BIG applause for veteran actress Mariko Kaga, who plays a terminal cancer patient who plays a huge influence on the Sakurai's character as he tries to treat her. Kaga is an inspiration in this film, and next year will be 50 years since she appeared in her first film, Tears on the Lion's Mane | Namida o shishi no tategami ni (1962).

Anyway, although a sad film, there is great representation of the human spirit as defined with courage and love, and I can recommend the film wholeheartedly.

Latest Kobayashi watch ^^, can never, ever get tired of his films and he did so many back in the 60's, too many to count, only problem is most are too hard to find. :sweatdrop: Above was sort of a spoof on the Bond movies, Kobayashi didn't play a tough guy but a photographer who suddenly is drawn in the middle of a kidnap case and also to find the whereabouts of a lost cache of gold, the modern female ninja team that he fought with was also a solid touch. 8)

One of my all time faves celebrated his 78th B-day today, along with Akira above ^^ really defined the Nikkatsu action films from the late 50's to the early 70's. Way, way too many films to list of his, has done over 200 of them but Branded to Kill, A Colt is My Passport, Gate of Flesh and Youth of Beast are among his films that need to be watched. :yep: Few pics of his, first one is with a few of the other Nikkatsu stars of the 60's..... if you don't know by now we're talking about Jo Shishido. :thumbsup

Classic is right though thought their 1957 film Untamed Woman/Arakure was even better. :twothumbs This is going to be a Hideko Takamine month, last December she passed away at the age of 86, sometimes forgotten compared to other older Japanese actresses but she was #1 in my book, no one possessed as much talent, beauty and brains as she did. 8) Not sure how many films she did with Naruse but there were quite a few, problem with it is that if you watch one you're hookked, hmmmmm, actually that's a nice problem. :yep:

Last view, Red Handkerchief, not the best action film ever as Shishido said above but still it was a really, really good film, :thumbsup not as much action as others but a better story and plot. Lead actor and also a big star back then, Yujiro Ishihara, was quite a Jo Shishido look-a-like, he sadly died at an early age in 1987.

The late  石原 裕次郎 Yujiro Ishihara was the younger brother of Author and current Governor of Tokyo 石原 慎太郎, Shintaro Ishihara.
Shintaro's first novel, 太陽の季節 Taiyo no kisetsu (Season of the Sun) won the 芥川龍之介賞 Akutagawa Ryunosuke Shou (The Akutagawa Prize), which is considered one of Japan's highest literary awards. The book was made into a film in 1956, and, in a supporting role, Yujiro made his debut. Director was  Takumi Furukawa.

Yujiro appears in this clip at 1:44

Just finished watching ちょんまげぷりん / Chonmage Purin / aka "A Boy and His Samurai", the 2010 film directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura. Stars are former NEWS member Ryo Nishikido as a Samurai warrior, and Rie Tomosaka as a young single mother raising a young son (played by Fuku Suzuki). Shiori Kutsuna (the English subtitlist of the move gave her credit as "Shioli Kutsuna", but I am still pretty sure the correct English spelling of her first name is Shiori) has a small part as well as  a few other veteran actors.

A light film, comedic with just a touch of sad, it was an entertaining film with good pace. Some predictableness, but definitely a film that adults and kids would enjoy. A great ending theme song, by the late Kiyoshiro Imawano, "Remember You" (2005)

Chonmage is the name of the topknot worn by Samurai and by modern day Sumo wrestlers, and "purin" is the Japanese way of saying Pudding, or Custard.

The version I bought has English subtitles, so this helps make the film very easy to understand. Here is a short clip:

More Hideko here :? and another real oldie, think this may have been her first starring role, from 1941 Hideko the Bus Conductress, she was just 17 at the time. It's also another Nause directed film, he also wrote it, mostly a comedy but he slipped some serious subject matter in there such as anti-authority and anti-business angles, tough to do then as censorship was quite high, also a look at quite a bit of poverty during that time, luckily Hideko and her cheerful manner made it a sunny watch. :)

Not an easy film to explain, sort of an 'arty' film, no plot to speak about just followed one guy during his life, which was a boring one. :sweatdrop: Very slow film but kind of enjoyable, these kind of change of pace ones usually are. :?

Just viewed another Hideko film, :? from 1964 Yearning/Midareu, another film directed by Mikio Naruse. :shocked Bit of a slow, somber film, Hideko plays a widow who still stays at her husbands house running their mini store which is slowly going under due to a new supermarket that opened. :sweatdrop: Also making things complicated is her husband's younger brother has a crush on her which started a turn of events that had her leave the shop and head back to her hometown with the brother following her. Bit of a sad ending as the brother dies, they left that up in the air and if he did was it an accident or was it self inflicted? :(

Just finished watching "Beck" (2010) directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi (SPEC, Trick the Movie, Twentieth Century Boys, etc.) - The hopes and dreams of a recently formed rock band, with little sister role well played by Shiori Kutsuna.
The cast was a bit of a reunion for the cast of the TV drama "Mei chan no Shitsuji" (2009), the television series with Nana Eikura in the title role. Four of the six main actors in Beck worked together in "Mei chan no Shitsuji"- Hiro Mizushima, Takeru Sato, Osamu Mukai, and Shiori. Sure wish Hiro Mizushima would continue to act, as he says he is retired for good to be a full time writer. Wish he would consider that he could do both.....
The other two main actors were a very good Kenta Kiritani, and in a somewhat smaller role, Aoi Nakamura (who has had a lot of good roles lately, including co-starring with J-pop goddess, Ai Takahashi in the television series Q.E.D- I think this was a favorite of Yoshino san if I recall correctly??.)
Standout in supporting roles were comedian Takanori Takeyama, and extremely cute Sari Kurauchi.
Generally a well done film, with some excellent music scenes, and some great guitar work.
Plot was interesting, but film was a bit stretched out in length, and there was one side plot that was a little bit preposterous and completely unnecessary (involving a stolen guitar and the bad boys from New York who come to Japan to claim it)
A couple of interesting director choices-
1) Shiori Kutsuna and Hiro Mizukushi play siblings, apparently who had spent time in New York, so their characters have lots of lines in English. Shiori, having grown up in Australia, had a very native Australian English. Hiro, who lived in Switerland from the age of six until he was 12 years old, spoke English with a "Atlantic" English  (mix of British and North American)....this was not distracting, as it was a lot of fun to see English being used, and the use of English  actually was important in the romantic development between Shiori's character and Takeru's character; so the disparity of regional accents was no big thang.
2) Takeru's character is probably second in importance to Hiro's character to the story, and the director decided not to try and use his singing voice, nor did he use a dubbed singer......When the character sang, the viewer would hear background music, but simply could only see him mouthing the words, but no sounds. The viewer only knew that he had an unbelievably unique and magnificeent voice by watching the reactions of the audience or the characters surrounding him while he sang. It was an interesting way to handle a character who is supposed to be some kind of genius at singing, by not using any voice to convey the idea. Did it work? It was okay, but I do not think it will used again in the future.
Also, the DVD that I bought has no subtitles other than Japanese (for the hard of hearing, I suppose), so I was not able fully to pick up the plot details without the help of some reviews written in English. A film with great rock and roll  music, it is worth a watch. Is it a great film that happens to have a musical theme (think "Swing Girls")? No, I would say it doesn't quite reach that magical pinnacle.  But.....worth a watch indeed.

^^ Nice post and review Muppet, :thumbsup but yes did think Aoi PoNakamura was so bad, boring would be a better word, :( him and the drama had so much potential and flopped so bad though have to admit it's the only thing I've seen him in so don't know if he's always like that.

Talking about music based movies, Swing Girls was quite good but has faded a bit for me over the years but you've got me interested in Beck, but the above movie in my humble opinion is the best music movie ever(!!), Iden tity, it's got Kumiko Aso  which makes it a must watch but it's a movie which is 110 minutes long and it seems like 20 minutes it's that good!! :yep:

Trailer looks good, and I have a liking of movies based on musicians, so I will check it out. And yes, Kumiko is all that and a bag of chips. I have seen her in one of the Jam Films short films, as well as the Uchouten Hotel and the Seaside Motel, and not a moment of screen time with her is regrettable. All I can say, is she has a very long list of appearances and I have seen too few of them.

With regards to "Iden tity", another good actor from that film is Shido Nakamura- who really has a remarkable background....a Kabuki actor since age 8 (which is a family activity, passed on from generation to generation) he got into films at age 30 in "Ping Pong", the role which won him best newcomer (ha ha) in 2003. I have also seen him in Yamato, Letters from Iwo Jima, GeGeGe no Kitaro, Ichi, plus he had a role in Beck. The man can do 'intense' like very few actors can, but he has the full range as well.

He barely is in this trailer from "Ichi", but he plays the bad ass. He was also in the  Jet Li movie "Fearless" (in Chinese the film is "Huo Yuanjia")    where he plays the Japanse swordsman who goes up against Jet Li's character in the climatic fight.

This article in Variety is written by Mark Schilling, who has covered Japanese cinema for years with The Japan Times. Full story here:  http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118047819 (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118047819)

Director Yoshimitsu Morita dies

Won acclaim at film festivals over three decades

Japanese helmer Yoshimitsu Morita, whose films depicted the absurdity and vulnerability of everyday life in conformist Japan, died of acute liver failure in Tokyo on Wednesday. He was 61.
Morita won international acclaim over his prolific 30-year career for movies that were distinctly Japanese, depicting the fragile beauty of the nation's human psyche and visual landscape while daringly poking fun at its ridiculous tendency for rigid bureaucracy and ritualistic hierarchy.

After starting as an indie filmmaker working in 8 mm, Morita made his 35 mm feature debut in 1981 with "Something Like It." His international breakthrough, however, came with 1983 black comedy "The Family Game," starring Yusaku Matsuda as a sardonic home tutor who takes over a dysfunctional middle-class family.

Its striking cinematography, focusing on rows and rows of identical apartments and people dining solemnly sitting side by side, was an exhilarating parody of Japanese family values.

He later reunited with Matsuda for "And Then," a 1985 drama based on a novel by Soseki Natsume. The pic won five Japanese Academy Awards and scored a director nomination for Morita

Ended the Hideko month on a good note, my fave from hers and as usual one directed by Naruse, from 1957 Arakure aka Untamed Woman. Hideko played a woman who really had been beaten down so many times in her life and kept getting back up only to see something else go wrong, usually though the men she was married to or worked with. :sweatdrop: This was nominated for best Foreign Film for 1957 but didn't make the final cut but had I been around back then to vote.... :?

Andarushia - Megami no Houfuku (http://andalucia-movie.jp/index.html). Big improvement in story pacing compared to Amalfi.

Normally, I think it's a waste of money for movies to be shot overseas when they can be done locally.
This one did pretty well though showing a lot of nice scenes.

Princess Toyotomi (http://www.princess-toyotomi.com/) - Story gets crazy in a large scale. Really interesting stuff.
Lucky I watched Gou, otherwise I would not get all the Sengoku references.
LOL, didn't notice Tamaki Hiroshi's guest appearance until seeing his name in the credits and rewinding back. :P

MPAJ releases yearly box office ranking for 2011

The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (or ‘MPAJ‘ for short) have released their annual official box office rankings for 2011.

Unlike 2010, the film industry experienced a sharp decline in terms of sold movie tickets and revenue for 2011. The number of sold tickets dropped by 17% (from 174,358,000 to 144,726,000), while the revenue declined by 17.9% (from 220,737,000,000 Yen to 181,197,000,000 Yen), although the number of movies screened increased by 83 (from 716 to 799).

Of course the Great Tohoku Earthquake was the major culprit for the decline. The number of screens in Japan decreased by 73 compared to 2010, with 40 of them gone because of the earthquake.

Although revenue declined for both Japanese and Western films, it was the fourth consecutive year for Japanese films to be more successful than its Western counterparts. 54.9% of the total revenue was earned by Japanese films, while 45.1% was earned by Western films.

I'll be visiting Tottori later this Spring so I decided to watch "Woman in the Dunes (http://www.hulu.com/watch/234920/woman-in-the-dunes)" on the Everest Principle. For so long this title was just that: a famous movie title and little more.

What a far-freakin' out experience this was. Arty-farty to the core, rich in allegory, symbolism, precise black-and-white photography, and a pretty creepy soundtrack that screeches eeriness and spookiness and get-me-the-hell-outta-here-ness.

Also noteworthy: pretty HOT lovemaking scenes for mid-60s Japanese cinema. Even with that obake/Kwaidan siren soundtrack lingering about.

At over two hours, thirty minutes there's a lot of stuffiness to be had so patience is a virtue. Look forward to playing in the sand later this year!

Haven't watched a film for a while, too many dramas but gonna change that, just viewed Uchu daikaiju Girara from 1967, really one of the more cheesy movies from that era, least so much it made it an okay watch, probably one of the few sci-fi films from that period that wasn't directed by Honda, could have used him. :O

This film will be released in August- something I would like to see.

Entitled 日本の噓 / Nippon no Uso (The Deception of Japan)

From the Asahi Shimbun story by writer Louis Templado:

Japan has needed a chronicler dedicated to tracing the roots of its nuclear tragedy--and it's found an old one in the form of Kikujiro Fukushima. Ninety-one years old and still shooting, the photojournalist is among the longest-serving in the profession.

A witness to immediate aftereffects of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Fukushima the photographer is the subject of a soon-to-be-released documentary that describes his path to Fukushima, the nuclear accident, which at his age can only be a natural close to a career of nearly seven decades..........

Seeing as how my fave era of Japanese films is from the 60's-early 70's naturally KenTakakura is high on my list of best actors, here's some info from Oricon on his new film, his 205(!!) and the trailer for it, good cast besides him. :)

The full trailer for the upcoming movie road movie ‘Anata e‘, starring Takakura Ken in his 205th movie, has finally been released on the official website.

‘Anata e’ is directed by Furuhata Yasuo, who already worked with Takakura in 20 other films. It tells the story of a Japanese prison counselor called ‘Kurashima Eiji‘ (Takakura) who lost his beloved wife (Tanaka) at the relatively young age of 53. In her last ‘etegami’ (picture letter) to him, she wrote down that she would like to have her ashes scattered over the sea in her hometown. In order to fulfill her last wish and in order to find out more about his late wife, Kurashima takes her ashes and begins his travel from Toyama to Nagasaki with his camper van. Along the way, he’ll run into many different people and experience an unforgettable journey.

The movie is based on a draft by the late Ichiko Seichi and was completed by scriptwriter Aoshima Takeshi. The distance between Toyama and Nagasaki is 1,200 kilometers (745 miles), but due to some scenes having to be filmed in various outskirts, the team around Takakura had to travel for a total of 9,050 kilometers (5,623 miles) during a period of two and a half months.

A breathtaking ensemble of actors are appearing in smaller and bigger roles throughout the movie, including Kitano Takeshi, Sato Koichi, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, Tanaka Yuko, Nagatsuka Kyozo, Harada Mieko, Yo Kimiko, Ayase Haruka, Miura Takahiro, Otaki Hideji, Asano Tadanobu, Okamura Takashi, and many more. The trailer already introduces many of the characters they are portraying in the movie.

‘Anata e’ is going to open in cinemas nationwide on August 25th.

Checked out SPEC~ Ten :)

A lot better than expected. Doesn't have the drama-to-movie habit of making the pacing slow and boring.
Instead the story is kept simple with really fun scenes all through it.
It's probably on the same level if not better than the series. Really good watch. :thumbup
Also gave me a huge hunger for gyoza.

Just saw a really nice family film- if you like dogs, you will enjoy this film.

LOVE まさお君が行く!  / Love Masao Kimi ga Iku! (English Title is 'Go Masao!')

A very nice film starring  the talented youngest member of SMAP, Shingo Katori and a wonderful Labrador playing Masao.

Based on the true story of a television program where a comedian, Hideki Matsumoto, and a Labrador named Masao, starred in a televsion series called 'まさおくんが 行く!ぽちたまペットの旅' / "Masao-kun ga iku! Pochitama petto no tabi" ("Itinerant Dog Masao's Trip"), Katori plays Matsumoto.

It is a fine film for pet lovers, as it really explores the love between people and their pets, and how everyone's lives improve when that love is allowed to grow.

Great supporting cast with the always wonderful  Ryoko Hirosue as Matsumoto's love interest who has drifted away after many years of relationship that has not culminated in marriage. One of the best of the young generation of actresses, Riko Narumi plays the assistant director who is under the guidance of veteran actor Ken Mitsuishi as the director. Susumu Terajima, one of the most familiar character actors in Japanese cinema, has a supporting role as the manager of the talent agency that provides human and canine actors.

Hideki Matsumoto has a very small role in the film, but very memorable indeed. Pictured below is Matsumoto with Masao while promoting the television series.

A bonus to the film is the ending song is  AKB48's Atsuko Maeda's 'Kimi Wa Bokuda', written by Yasushi Akimoto.

A link to the trailer which includes Shingo Katori: http://www.nipponcinema.com/trailers/love-masao-kun-ga-iku-trailer (http://www.nipponcinema.com/trailers/love-masao-kun-ga-iku-trailer)

The YouTube link does not include Katori, but does have Matsumoto with Masao, and Maeda's song.

Think SPEC deserved it's own thread, from Oricon yesterday:

It was announced that upcoming movie “SPEC ~Close~“, which is the concluding episode of the “SPEC” series, will be a 2 part movie titled “Gekijouban SPEC ~Close~ Zen no Hen” and “Gekijouban SPEC ~Close~ Kou no Hen.” Both parts will be  released successively this fall.

“SPEC” series started as a serial drama (on TBS) that aired back in October of 2010, and it follows the odd duo of “Toma Saya” (played by Toda Erika) and “Sebumi Takeru” (played by Kase Ryo), who are the special agents of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Public Security Bureau and tackle difficult and mysterious cases related to criminals with certain special abilities (called as “SPEC HOLDER”). There was also a special drama “SPEC ~Sho~” (aired in April 2012), as well as a movie “SPEC ~Ten~” (released in April 2012).

Including the regular cast members from the drama, such as Ryu Raita (as “Nonomura Kotaro”), and Arimura Kasumi (as “Masaki Miyabi”), there will be appearances of the successive “SPEC HOLDERS” who also appeared in the drama which include  Asano Yuko (as “Madam Yang”), Kamiki Ryunosuke (as “Ninomae Juichi”), Fukuda Saki (as “Shimura Mirei”), Shirota Yu (as “Chii Satoshi”), Tanaka Tetsushi (as “Reisen Toshiaki”), Yasuda Ken (as “Unno Ryota”), and Mano Erina (as “Satori”).

Also, Kitamura Kazuki (as “Kikkawa Shu”), who made a guest appearance on the previous special drama “SPEC ~Sho~”, and Kuriyama Chiaki (as “Aoike Satoko”), who appeared in the previous film “SPEC ~Ten~”, will be appearing. Moreover, Kashii Yu, KENCHI (EXILE), and Endo Kenichi will be joining as new characters.

Additionally, it was announced that Mukai Osamu and Oshima Yuko will be making appearances as well. Mukai’s role will be “Sekai”, a mysterious man in white, who appeared in the last scene of the previous movie “SPEC ~Ten~”, and Oshima’s role will be a mysterious woman who will be the key to the story.

Prior to the release of the movies, another special drama “SPEC ~Zero~” is also set to be aired this fall, and it will depict the story of how Toma ended up losing her left hand. The guest characters for the special drama include Osugi Ren, Kawashima Umika, and Takashima Masanobu.

Recently was able to watch  ストロベリーナイト / Sutoroberi Naito (Strawberry Night) with English subtitles.

Stars Yuko Takeuchi as Police Homicide Detective Reiko Himekawa, who is investigating a murder appears to
be gang related, but she is unable to accept that theory, and so digs in (with her team) to find out if
there are other reasons.....

I have to say that I have never seen the series, so I think there are charcter situtations that fans of the TV series
would understand that I did not. But still an intersting crime film that stands on its own. Also stars Hidetoshi Nishijima
as Kazuo Kikuta, who is #2 on the Himekawa team, and Takao Osawa, as highly placed gang leader Isao Makita, who gets involved with the investigation and with Himekawa. Supported by a large cast of veteran actors, led by Tomokazu Miura, and all of them add to the drama.

Director was Yuichi Sato, and the film is based on  the novel by Tetsuya Honda. Release date was 26 January, 2013.

Just saw Yokomichi Yonosuke with English subtitles (the English title is "A Story of Yonosuke", and the film was released in Japan on February 23 of this year)

The film takes place in the 80's, and also several years later when many of the cast are fondly remembering an interesting lad that they met back in University days. That young man is Yonosuke Yokomichi, played very ably by actor Kengo Kora. Yuriko Yoshitaka is wonderful in the role of a girl from a very wealthy family, who first meets Yonosuke on an arranged double date.

Of course, Yuriko has her own thread here at JPH!P, as does co-star Aki Asakura, who plays another freshman at the university, along with actor Sosuke Ikimatsu. Lots of good supporting actors in the film, including Go Ayano and Ayumi Ito.

Director is Shuichi Okita, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Shiro Maeda. The film was adapted from the novel by Shuichi Yoshida.

Some critics complained about the 160 minute length of the film, but I felt the film moved along very well, with the dual need to establish the characters and the time period.

I would recommend the film as a very well crafted character driven film, with some very funny moments and some very touching moments. The film, just like the title character, will leave the viewer with some really nice memories.

Just  saw  だいじょうぶ3組  (Daijoubu 3Kumi / English title "Nobody's Perfect)
with Hirotada Ototake, based on his autobiographical novel.

Brilliantly directed by Ryuichi Hiroki, also stars Taichi Kokubun (a member of Tokio), Kimiko Yo, Nana Eikura (a very small role), and a cast of kids led by wonderful performances by Mone Kamishiraishi and Anna Ishii.

The novel and film are based on the real life experiences of Ototake (who was born without arms or legs) as a school teacher of a fifth grade class. Filmed in Shiga Prefecture, using a vacated school, and the surroundings, there is not much spectacular scenery, yet the cinematography was excellent (in fact, at times it was stunning- see the school sports festival as an example)

The story is not just about the courage of a man dealing with an extreme handicap, but delves into concepts such as otherness, shame , and ultimately love and acceptance .

Released on March 23, 2013, it would be well worth a watch!

舟を編む (Fune o Amu) with the English title "The Great Passage", released on 13 April, 2013 - was a fine film that I recently viewed.
The film had English subtitles, which was pretty necessary for all but very fluent speakers of Japanese. The film is about a team putting together a new Japanese dictionary, so there are lots of words and expressions that are in the dialogue that make fluency or sub titles necessary to fully enjoy the film.

The film stars Ryuhei Matsuda and Aoi Miyazaki , and as usual, a very fine supporting cast, including Joe Odagiri, who was brilliant in his role.
Going to keep an eye on young Hana Kuroki, who had a small part in the film...and I think we will see more of her in the future.

Putting together a dictionary for publication is an unusual plot for a film, but the wonderful direction by Yuya Ishii resulted in a very watchable and enjoyable film (which was based on the book by Shion Miura).

If you get a chance to see this film, it is well worth a watch!

Recently watched "13 Assassins" (2010)
with Koji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, and Goro Inaki.

Really cool Samurai film, with the small band versus an
army 20 times their size.

Worth a watch for sure!

Just saw 「花戦さ」(Hana Ikusa, "Flower Battle")
English title is Flower and Sword. Director is Tetsuo Shinohara,
with screenplay by Yoshiko Morishita.
Based on the novel by Tadashi Onitsuka.
Released: 2017年6月3日

A film worth watching, the initial impression is that
one is watching a period film with a quirky Buddhist monk
who practices ikebana (flower arranging) whilst meeting up
with some of Japan's most important historical figures,

Of course the film is all that, but a lot more, and really merits watching.

Incredibly strong cast, headed by Mansai Nomura, and also starring
Ennosuke Ichikawa, Koichi Sato, Kiichi Nakai, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Katsumi
Takahashi, and Masato Wada.

But wait! There's more! JPH!P favorite, Aoi Morikawa, plays a key role in the film,
and she absolutely shines in her role as a girl brought back to the monastery
after being found near death by Senko Ikenobo, the monk played by Nomura san.

The film heads into very dramatic territory, and the concept of the divine nature
of forgiveness, transcending all religions, is beautifully told.

Special shout out to Aoi san and Nomura san, for their fine performances.

I am unsure if this is the right place to ask this but here I go

I am interested in watching movies featuring gravure idols. I have already seen The Virgin Psychics.

Obviously I do not have this desire because I want to watch a decent plot. Any suggestion is welcome (as long as it features at least one gravure idol)

Cheers!
