Yo-yo Girl Cop Enter: The Black Widow
Chapter 1 - Sleeping
She closed her eyes briefly to grant them some rest. She had been staring at the wall for more than two hours already. There was nothing else in the room that she wanted to look at except that empty wall.
To look at anything else was like a punishment for her. Anything else that she could look at in the room would only remind her of that which she doesn’t want to remember. Other than staring at things, there was nothing else to do in the hospital room. It wasn’t that she was bored. She could leave anytime she wanted to anyway. But the thing is, she didn’t want to leave.
I have to be here when she wakes up. I have to explain to her.
Although painful to the sight, the medical equipment that occupied a third of the room supplanted music to her ears. The constant, consistent beeps were the last string tying her to her will to live.
As long as these things beep, she’s still alive. She can still come back to me.
She couldn’t bring herself to look at the unconscious girl lying on the hospital bed, her love. It was clear to her that this was all her fault. But this wasn’t how she planned things to turn out.
I’m sorry, baby. … Please wake up… Please… forgive me… I love you… I really do…
Inevitably, she looked to her right where the bed was. Where her love was. Where her Yocchan was. She stood up and slowly approached the bed. The figure that laid on it remained motionless, seemingly dead. She gently caressed the soft and warm but lifeless cheek that she has kissed so many times before.
Please, come back to me.
The shards of glass have been removed, the stains of blood, washed away, but the wounds have not fully healed nor have the bruises fully subsided. Worst of all, the smile that she loved so much has not yet returned to the lips of her love. She kissed the lips that would not return her kiss and held the hand that did not grasp hers. In desperation, she nudged the bed gently. Once. Twice. But it’s occupant would not wake.
Baby… wake up…
The doctor said that no bone was broken but Yocchan did suffer a concussion. CT scans show no physical abnormalities on her brain resulting from the accident but until she regains consciousness, the doctor has no way of telling whether the impact has affected her in any other way. She might find some difficulty in walking again if she does wake up. Two weeks of lying about could cause that. But nothing physical therapy couldn't fix.
She kept her gaze at Yocchan. The blank expression on the patient’s face was a thousand needles piercing her heart.
Baby, I’m sorry…
She found herself pathetic. She found herself laughing at the person she has become. She wasn’t like this when this all began. She didn’t care back then. She just had a job to do. She had never attached herself to anyone like this. There may be a string attached but she never tied it to her finger. A counter-weight could always do the trick. The string was just an accessory, an appendage attached for utility.
How you changed me, I don’t remember. I just want you to come back. Don’t leave me hanging… I don’t want to be like this without you. I can’t be human without you.
The string. It must have tightened itself in the many ups and downs she had with this one. All the tension, in an ironic twist, kept her in Yocchan’s arms even when it would suffocate her. Even when it was hurting both of them. At the many times she attempted to leave, she would only come back again, sooner than the last time. Before, all she thought was that she HAD to stay on this but now, she knew she WANTS to be in this, to be with Yocchan.
You can’t die thinking that my love isn’t real. Everything else may be a lie… everything except my love.
She took out her yo-yo. That damned yo-yo. She gazed at the seal in the middle of the round plaything before tying it to her finger. This was her most recent yo-yo. She’s had a couple of yo-yo changes for the last six months-- the most often in the department’s history.
How much you’ve changed me, I can’t imagine. It doesn’t matter. I’ll change for you, anytime, if you want me to… When you wake up, I’ll turn in my badge. I promise. It will just be you and me… Just come back…
She threw the yo-yo down to a hard sleep. Usually, with a mild tug, it should come back up. But this time, it wouldn’t. The delay could only make her shed some more tears. She brought her eyes back to her Yocchan, still in a deep sleep.
Does this mean you’re not coming back?
Her moment of grief became that of irritation when a man suddenly entered the room. She glared at him for his intrusion. She had told them that this room was off-limits to them, their bugs and their other agents. The man was taken aback by her glare but there was work to be done. “The director has summoned for you.”
“I don’t care. I won’t leave her here.”
“But he said it was urgent…”
“Shut up! If he wants to talk to me, tell him to wake her up first.”
“Agent KaiseR...”
At hearing her god-forsaken, codename, she slapped him on the face. “I told you before, you may only call me by one name in her presence. That name is Reika.”

Author's Note:
apologies if this came a bit late, for those who're not oriented with yo-yo tricks, sleeping is a basic trick where you throw the yo-yo hard enough and it stays down for an extended period of time. Many tricks start with a sleep. Usually, these tricks are string-visual tricks... it is also known as 'sleeper' among other yo-yo folks... Here's Reika doing the trick in the movie... sorry if it's blurry and dark...

i want to make this my pride (RFP's my joy, haha)
my girl's starting to mind my online time again... she's getting jealous over members of the forum now! haha!
this one's a gift for charmy-sama..... haha... happy birthday, my goddess…. may yossui make you ha~pi for another ishiyoshi year!
Yo-yo Girl Cop Enter: The Black Widow
Chapter 2 - Atom Splitter Phase 1: Split Bottom Entry
She kept her eyes on her lover’s unconscious form. The doctor had finally removed the bandages around her forehead. The wounds have already healed and the bandages were only making it difficult for her blood to travel to her brain.
Baby… You look so kakkoi… Maybe a bit bruised but still very kakkoi… You like hearing that, ne? Smile for me again…
The removal of the bandages returned Yocchan to her usual appearance, just in a long sleep. She brushed her lover’s hair with her fingers while talking to the seemingly lifeless person before her.
Baby… Maichin said your tomato plant at home have finally borne fruit. Maybe when you wake up, we can go home and they will be ripe. Be sure to wake up in time… If you don’t they might rot away and you may never get to eat them…
The doctor told her that talking to comatose-state patients could help in their healing processes much like how talking to plants help them grow better. She remembered picking up that tidbit about plants from Yocchan herself.
You used to talk to that plant, ne? I wonder why it didn’t bear fruit that time… Maybe, it didn’t like your voice
Reika flashed a faint smile as she caressed her Yocchan’s face. She carefully traced the jawline with her lips closely following her finger.
Now, now… don’t get upset… I love your voice… If that plant didn’t like it, well, it’s his problem… But I love your voice… It’s so… I don’t know… sexy, perhaps? Won’t you wake up so I can hear your voice again? I miss it so much… I miss you.
Reika could almost laugh at the irony. She missed the person whom she has never parted with for two weeks. For two weeks, she had paced around in this room, eaten hospital rations, slept on the couch, bathed in the tiny bathroom, stared at the empty wall, glared at the police who were taking peeks at the door, talked with the nurses and doctors who came by during their rounds. For two weeks, she has, on a daily basis, attempted to wake Yocchan up.
Baby… wake up…
Reika pleaded with tears in her eyes. She pleaded like she had never done before. Actually, she has never pleaded all her life. She was too proud until now. She held Yocchan’s hand tightly with both hands as she kissed it.
I’ve been trying to wake you up for days… Isn’t it about time that you wake me up again? Just like before… Threaten me with cinnamon rolls for breakfast again… Please? Remember that time?
//flash//
“Reika-chan… rise and shine…” Yocchan quickly pulled the curtains apart, allowing the morning sun to invade the room. Reika refused to get up she was still sleepy after coming home late from work.
“You’ll be late for school… …” Yocchan tunefully said. The absence of the melancholic aura Yocchan always had about her was enough to wake Reika up but the futon just wouldn’t let her go.
“Nice try… You know I couldn’t care any less for school…” Reika groggily answered before burying her head under a pillow.
“I’m gonna leave you behind… I’m going to school now… I have volleyball practice today…”
Reika didn’t move. She didn’t respond. She knew Yocchan wouldn’t leave her behind.
Yossy knelt down beside the futon, leaned closer to Reika and whispered. “If you don’t get up now and eat breakfast with me… you’ll end up with just cinnamon rolls for breakfast…”
“Don’t you dare!” Reika screamed as she threw the pillow covering her head at Yocchan.
“Tone it down… You wouldn’t want the other boarders to know that you slept over again, right? Anyway, you know I can always leave some rolls for you…” Yossy teased but both of them knew she really could eat everything else on the breakfast table except the cinnamon rolls which Reika despised. To her, the taste, even the scent of cinnamon was just revolting.
“Fine! Getting up now...” Reika answered with a frown.
“Now, don’t get angry at me… it’s not my fault you came over late from work…” Yossy paused as a naughty smile crept up her face.
“Well, maybe I am partially responsible for making you sleep really late… But please no frowning faces in this room… It’s not as pretty as your smiling face…” Yossy planted a kiss on Reika’s blushing cheek before leaving Reika to herself.
Reika slapped herself as she started to fold up the futon. What are you thinking?! She’s a damn girl and you know it. You have no business falling in love with a girl. She is just the job! Just get information and you can leave her behind like what you did to jobs before! You weren’t always like this, blushing at “it’s not as pretty as your smiling face”!!
Reika didn’t feel like herself anymore. She blushed and felt giddy whenever she saw Yossy or even just heard her name.
You are an undercover cop, damnit! Now pull yourself together and keep this act an act!
//flash//
Reika snapped back from her moment of nostalgia when she noticed a familiar silhouette from the small window on the door. It was the director pacing back and forth as if waiting for her to come out.
Now what does he want?!
She gently let go of the sleeping patient’s hand before approaching the door. She leaned against the door and spoke in a low tone. She spoke softly so not to disturb the peace in the room but loud enough to be heard by the director outside.
“What’re you doing here?”
“We need to talk.”
“I don’t want to talk to you.”
“Even if it’s about her?”
“Start talking”
She heard him chuckle. She wanted to knock him out with her yo-yo but the door was in the way and she had no intention of letting the air within the room be contaminated by the police director’s breath.
“Do you remember how this operation started?” He asked in a very casual tone with a hint of nostalgia.
“It was six months ago…”
//flash//
Hideki handed her a folder with a picture sticking out at the top.
“Is she the subject?”
“She is. You will find the objectives, available means, limitations, the mission budget and her background there.”
“Can’t you just whisk her away like the other ones?”
“She’s too well known. If she disappears, the public will notice and this may jeopardize our investigation. Also she doesn’t wish to
cooperate with us.”
Agent KaiSer grinned. “She doesn’t trust you policemen types?”
“Apparently”
“When do I start?”
“Tomorrow, she will be given a big par--”
“party… yeah, it says so here…” Kaiser butted in, having read the item in the file. She didn’t like prolonging meetings like this.
“You know what to do?”
“Yeah.”
//flash//
She quietly locked the door before walking back towards the bed. She mustn’t be bothered in her wait. The director saw her going back to the bedside. He hasn’t even spoken to her about the forensic report. He tried to open the door only to find it locked from inside. He could only curse her under his breath. Silence may not be broken on this side of the hospital no matter what.
When Reika heard the attempts at the doorknob, she wanted to grin but somehow the expression refused to show on her face.
She looked down at the patient, still fast asleep. She gently pinched the cheek of her angel.
You know I like watching you sleep because you look so cute. But this is too much, baby…
She sighed as she walked around the bed to the other side.
… Just, wake up so we can go home…
//flash//
“Oi… Reika, what’s wrong?” Yossy looked down upon beside Reika who was sitting on the floor. Apparently, her knees had given up and she just fell there.
Reika couldn’t speak. She can’t just tell Yossy about what happened for that will reveal her real identity. She hasn’t completed the mission yet. She just sat there silently, letting the unrestrained tears stain her cheeks.
“I didn’t love you, Reika… You were just fun to have around…”
She could still hear his voice in her head. Over and over, breaking her heart into tiny pieces. The only person whom she thought loved her, didn’t. It just made her feel even less of a person.
I’m not a person. I’m a thing. Used for business, used for pleasure. That and nothing more.
Blinded by tears, she could see nothing but that truth. But before her mind can fully digest the thought, she felt a pair of warm hands on her shoulders.
The owner of the hands was silent but Reika felt some sincerity from the gesture.
She wiped the tears from her eyes with the sleeves of her sweater and saw Yossy standing in front of her. She grabbed the comforting hand and pulled its owner down.
Yossy was caught unprepared and she fell to Reika’s side.
Reika had stopped crying but now stared at Yossy with a cold glare. It was then that she realized how hard it was to be a split person. At one point or another, the line gets blurry and you lose yourself to figments of imagination.
Yossy’s face remained unmarked by emotion.
“WHY?!” Reika screamed as she buried her fist in Yossy’s jaw in a punch. The assault sent Yossy's head reeling to the left but she said nothing. She stayed seated where she had fallen earlier.
Then and there Reika buried her head at the crook of Yossy’s neck and cried again.
After a long moment of silence, Yossy let her go. “If you got into a fight with someone… Just let it go… If a person doesn’t want you, that person doesn’t deserve you…” she whispered.
//flash
How can you be so real to a false person like me?
Reika leaned closer as she studied Yossy, still in deep slumber. How innocent she looked as she slept. She was kept in the dark too long.
The indecently timed rendezvous, the late night calls, the covert operations. The web of lies. If the yo-yo stops spinning, the trick will fail.
Reika, being complacent with Yossy’s silence and secrecy, didn’t notice that the subject had become suspicious of Reika’s double life.
I’m sorry. I meant to tell you. You just beat me to it… I never thought you were the jealous type… Why didn’t you just tell me?
Reika sadly smiled. Yossy was really the quiet type… but to keep it all in for months?
