Is this thread supposed to creep me out? If so, it is definitely succeeding. Is crossing dressing a popular thing in Japan or are they just doing for comedic purposes on their numerous TV shows? I really hope it is only for comedic purposes, but knowing of all the crazy shit that happens in Japan, it wouldn't surprise me if cross-dressing was a fad over there.
It's not just Japan. Kpop has a thing for cross-dressing as well, although there the boys tend to cross-dress more than the girls.
And hell, Amber of f(x) might have more fangirls than some of the rookie boybands.
Fangirls love danso mostly because it lets their idols convey a sense of swagga they usually can't as cute girls. Dunno why guys would like girls-as-boys, other than idols looking real sexy in suits.
There's also the pairings aspect, of course. Girl-on-girl-is-hot implications aside, look at how the girls themselves squeal over their more boyish-looking members.
And some of that Sae squee in action:
Daaaaaaamn Mayu looks like one of them Johnny's.
