With my headache and all, I just realized that I like to write whenever I think too much about a certain someone. I’ll be reading the awesome stories in this awesome
thread forum next time, when I have enough time. Take care people. :)

“KYA! Aichan! I’m so happy!” jumping in joy while her hands clasped near her heart, Niigaki Risa squealed in delight. Her best friend, Takahashi Ai, who’s standing a few meters away from her only managed to smile as Risa was bouncing up and down in one of the corners of their school’s huge open field, not minding the looks the other students were giving her.
“Smell it, quick, smell it!” Risa was overly excited handing the object that she almost fall over for the second time but didn’t mind it at all. She even shrugged it off when she was almost on the ground the first time when she was swarming with everyone over a certain someone five minutes ago.
“Ewww! No! There’s no way I’m going to smell someone’s perspiration. Put that away!” Ai cringed as she was shooing the hanky Risa was holding, obviously disgusted. “And watch your steps, will you!”
“Tch! You’re just jealous that I managed to wipe our star player’s sweat using my now memorabilia hanky. Do you think I should have it framed and hang it on one of my bedroom’s wall?” Ai only watched with her jaw on the ground as she continued to stare at her best friend who’s changing her facial expression in a matter of second from pouting to smiling, twirling and smelling the hanky once in a while whilst smiling from ear to ear. Fan-girling a little too much.
Shaking her head, Ai tossed her backpack over her shoulder and started to walk, ready to leave the sweat smelling area with or without her best friend. The track and field event had just ended. Their player won. Everyone from their class was happy and celebrating, including Risa of course, the star player’s number one fan.
“Aren’t you happy that I am happy?” a soft voice froze Ai from her track. Turning her head to face the source of the voice, she saw a pouting Risa staring at the ground.
Holding her right hand up to reach the younger’s chin and making her look into her eyes, Ai smiled “You know I am.”
“That means you will come with me for the class's celebration tonight?” beaming Ai with her sweetest smile, Risa’s eyes filled with plea and hope.
“You know I hate parties.” This time, it was Ai’s turn to pout.
“But you will join for me, right?” retaining her joyful facial expression at first but slowly forming a pout while never averting her eyes from the older, Risa waited for Ai’s response. She doesn’t need a word to know it’s a yes or a no for she can read Ai’s mind by just looking onto her face. Ai knows her best friend’s pout was a trick and Risa knows her weapon is effective.
“And so it’s a date! Kyaa! I’m excited!” Snaking her hand around Ai’s and resting her head on Ai’s arm, Risa cried in uttered joy, making Ai shake her head once again but this time with a smile on her face.

Ada-dear, I'm afraid I can not grant your wish :) You see, in my last fic, I interchanged two characters because my heart was crying 'No, don't give Ai to Linlin and Reina' XD and it turned out weird :lol: I don't even find the courage to continue it, good thing the last update's like an ending XD

“Aichan!” a high pitched voice echoed inside the four corners of the room. “Why are you in bed and not yet dressed?!” she continued while stomping forward. Ai only stirred, looked around, grabbed the nearest pillow and covered her ears with it, trying to lessen the possible eardrum damage.
“Aichan!”
“Arg. Five minutes.”
“OMG. We’ll be late! Get up already and get dressed.”
“Okay, two minutes.”
“Aichan!”
“My body is aching, thanks to you and you’re shopping skills this afternoon.”
“Alright! On your tummy.”
Grinning, Ai merrily obeyed instantly. Risa’s hands work wonders every time. She’d even fake it sometimes just so she can enjoy the healing power of her best friend’s touch because it feels good. It makes bad day turn into good.
“Remind me again why I have to be there?” asked Ai while enjoying the massage received from the younger.
“Because you promised”
“Why can’t I remember that promise?” a whack on her back was received as a reply. Giggling, Ai turned around and faced the pouting Risa. “I just can’t remember a promise when it didn’t come out from my own mouth” a flying palm landed on her shoulders followed by another and another. Moments later, a tickling battle commences, making the two arrived at the venue late.
The two arrived with Risa pouting, mumbling incoherent words and Ai grinning.
“This is not the first time we’re late, why so serious” Hearing Ai’s comment made Risa stop from her track and faced the grinning girl, still wearing her pout with brows frowning. “You know this night is important”
Sensing that the girl’s not amused one bit, Ai changed her stance, looked into her best friend’s eyes and gave out her sincerest smile “Hai, hai. I’m sorry, yeah? Forgive me?”
Risa didn’t speak a word and looked away. They stayed outside the venue for a while. The younger remained quite and the older was just there observing.
Moments later, one of the two spoke softly “I’m still nervous” then a hand intertwined with the other, offering comfort. A pair of smiling eyes then looked into a pair of worried eyes “It will be fine.” Ai’s words somehow soothed Risa’s inexplicable emotion, lifting her spirit up a little. Taking a deep breath, Risa guided the way and they entered into the premises.
This will be Risa’s first time meeting the track and field star player outside the school premises. She’s a transferee. She transferred just a week before the sports fest begun, when Risa was busy helping for the preparations of the event and the transferee became busy preparing for her game. During practice, she garnered quite a number of audiences as days went by. Almost everyone from her class was cheering for her on practice hours not to mention quite a number of students from their lower year, for three good reasons. One she showed an excellent skill not one from their class possesses. Two she showed modesty. And three she’s a beauty. Those three are the major reasons why her fan base skyrocketed in just a few days. But Risa’s reason’s different.
“Sayu, please introduce me again.” The short haired girl pleaded as soon as she saw her classmate.
“Why am I ushering people now?”
“Because you are her only friend around?” With eyes rolling, Sayu took Risa’s hand and was about to drag her to the star player when Risa made a double pace, overtaking the supposed leading Sayu.
“Excited much?”
Smiling sheepishly, Risa stopped and paved the way for the taller girl who just rolled her eyes again and tried to conceal her smile but totally failed. After searching for a good two minutes, more or less, they found her outside scanning the starry horizon.
“Waiting for a spaceship to pass by?” Too engrossed with her current activity, the girl in question was startled when she heard Sayu’s words. A smile then crept on her beautiful face, the smile that made Risa all the more eager to be closer to her but feeling uneasy at the same time.
“Sayu!” the girl whined
“What?” holding back her laughter, Sayu asked as innocent as possible. A clicking of tongue then followed.
“Hahaha, sorry. Got a minute?”
“Uh..? Yeah sure”
“I’d like to introduce someone to you... again.”
“This is Niigaki Risa, our class attendance monitor.”
“Niigaki-san, this is Kamei Eri”
“Hi!” handing her hand a little more than necessary to shake, Risa’s bracelet produced a sound making the star player avert her eyes from the short haired girl into the bracelet, staring at it for a while.

As soon as Risa left with Sayu, Ai saw some giggling girls looking her way, but she just ignored them and went to the back door instead, looking for fresh air and to have some alone time. Finding a good spot, a dimmed area one, she headed toward the bench, laid on it and stared at the dark sky.
“Not bad.”
This is my third UP2 attempt. The other two went directly into the trash bin. Yes I’m struggling as usual. :grin:

“OMG! Where is it?! Where is it?! Where is it?!” Risa’s reaction queen mode came to life the moment she laid her eyes on her wrist, confusing Eri. With mouth half opened, Eri was hopping her wide-confused-eyes from Risa’s wrist to Risa’s face. The only person who stayed calm despite the commotion was the youngest among the three. Sayu’s been around Risa for more than two years. Risa’s reaction queen behavior isn’t new to her.
“Eri, did your little Erien friends arrived without notifying us?” acting searching on the floor, lifting her foot after the other to search, Sayu casually asked the now even more confused Eri.
“Eh?!”
A smirk slowly crept on the youngest, the reason why she earned a hard smack from the runner. “Be serious, okay?”
“Gakisan, what happened? What’s wrong? I heard your voice a while ago” a rushing Ai came into the picture, panting. She ran and looked for her best friend as soon as she heard her best friend’s panicking voice.
“My lucky charm…” Risa was on the verge of crying moments ago. And when she saw Ai, her tears won’t just stop from free falling.
“We’ll find it. I promise. Show me the places you’ve gone to.”
“Just here. I was hand shaking with Kame-han when I realized it wasn’t attached to my bracelet anymore.”
“Wait, can you repeat that again?” Eri butted in
“Huh?”
“Please repeat what you’ve just said”
Wiping away the tears on her face and despite being confused, Risa obliged “Just here..? I was…”
“No. The part where you mentioned a name, what did you just call me?” Eri interrupted again Risa’s talk.
“Eri..?” she sounded not sure. She couldn’t exactly remember what she was saying a while ago.
“No. I’m positive that was not what I’ve heard.”
“She said Kame-han.” Ai interjected.
“I’ve never heard of that name in twelve years.”
“That means it’s really you?”

“I was in a car with my parents from a camping trip. My dad was driving, mom was on the passenger seat while I was at the back seat eating some sweets when a deer suddenly appeared and crossed the slippery road. Dad was surprised and the car skidded and swirled and turned upside down. It happened so fast that all I could remember was the screaming and blood and fire when the car stopped from turning. I called out mom and dad’s name but no one responded until I felt dizzy. And then someone grabbed my hand and pulled me out from the car. I know she was struggling but she really tried her hardest. She tried to talk to me but I had no strength left, I couldn’t even stand and I couldn’t open my eyes properly. All I could see from her was her mouth and her protruding tooth. And then I heard someone saying ‘Kame-han run! The car will explode!” And I remembered she was running as fast as she could while carrying me on her back until I passed out. When I woke up, I was already at the hospital and the girl who saved me had left already. After my recovery, a nurse handed me a sealed plastic container of all that’s left, including something I don’t own. The nurse said it was in my palm when they found it. And that was the charm, my lucky charm”
The four of them sat in a table while Risa was telling her tale. Sayu was sobbing, moved by Risa’s story. Ai held Risa’s hand from the start, trying to give her strength. And Eri was just silently listening.
“Can you show it to me when you find it”

“Did you bring it?” Ai who’s on the driver’s seat asked without looking into her companion, totally focused on the road, wrapping her hands a bit tightly than necessary around the steering wheel.
The two best friends were on their way to Sayu’s house. After finding that the bracelet worn by Risa was Ai’s and that Risa’s was not worn by Ai at that moment, Eri wanted to see the charm as soon as possible but she had prior plan on the following day, something she just can’t cancel. And the only option left was to invite Risa along.
“What? What is it? Did I forget something?” just like her high-speed-throwing of questions, Risa’s butt on the passenger’s seat was in rapid motion, anxiety growing.
“Calm down, will you? Jezzzz. I meant the charm, did you bring it?”
“Oh yeah, yeah, it’s attached to my bracelet” after regaining her composure, an awkward silence took over. Risa’s bubbly personality was somewhere else, due to her mixture of incomprehensible emotions. Whereas Ai’s lone personality’s on duty, for reason she has no idea why. The only activity inside the car was Ai’s focused on the steering wheel while Risa was running her other hand over the said charm.

“Eri left last night. She said she has something important to do and will just wait for us in there.” the long-black-haired girl said after they exchanged their good mornings. “I didn’t know you have matching bracelets.” Added Sayu as she noticed the bracelets worn by the two, Ai’s wearing it on her left while Risa’s on her right, and then she winked at them before boarding on the car. The two only gave out their smile and they’re off to the place they will spend their three day no school days.

Eri loves to sleep and to over sleep, but today’s an exemption. She got up early, took a shower and dressed afterward. After drinking some hot choco, she put her shoes on and wore her favorite hand knitted turtleneck sweater her mother made her, a little tight but is still comfy, and head out. It was still foggy, a nice atmosphere to start a walk and freshen up her entirety. It took her a good 20 minutes to arrive and locate the person she wanted to see. After finding her, she took a seat on the grassy ground and started to talk.
“Good morning! Did you sleep well? I did. After 12 years, I think last night was the first time I slept so soundly.” Eri’s voice was so sweet and full of joy and her beautiful smiling face was a plus factor that made her aura light and happy. “I earned a gold medal at school’s fest.” Holding the medal up to show it, Eri’s smile got even bigger.
“And I think I found the lost charm that you’ve given me on my seventh birthday. I told you I’ll find it and I found it. You should congratulate me for doing a good job. And I can’t wait to show it to you. She’ll arrive anytime today, so be hospitable, okay? Well, I know you will, you’re my oka-han after all. And who wants her daughter to be in a bad situation?” Giggling, she continued. “Not you, not you of course.”
“And yes, I know I haven’t visited you for a long while, gomen ne. To make up for that I brought you your favorite” she took a long stemmed white rose from her back and after placing it on the ground, she kneeled down, put both of her arms on the ground, rested her head on them and then she became silent for a few minutes. Moments later, her shoulders started to tremble followed by some sniffing sound.
“You have no idea how much I miss you.” The words somewhat choked her and came out from her mouth almost inaudibly but were still audible at a close range. “It’s so lonely being alone, mom.” She continued with her crack voice and a hint of pain in it while grasping her breaths. Seconds later she wept and sobbed after losing her control, finally allowing her emotion to flow freely, the emotion that started 12 years ago and build up inside her, the day her mother died when a car exploded.
She stopped crying over her mother’s death the day after the burial rites because she knows her mother died as a heroine but why did it sting her when she heard the pet name her mother used to call her? Why did she feel like crying seeing a family member that caused her mother’s life? Why did it have to come flashing back again after all these years?

A few meters away stood a short haired girl, silently wiping her tears away as she unintentionally overheard some of Eri’s words for her mother. She was told that Eri must be in this place and decided to follow her after hearing and knowing a dreadful information, with her heartbeat loud and rumbling. Ai offered to accompany her but insisted to go alone.
When the star player stayed still on the ground with her cry a little louder this time, Risa decided to leave and let Eri pour out everything and to continue her alone moment with her mother.
Composing herself as much as she could to not distract Eri, she turned around one last time to look at the crying girl “Eri… I’m so sorry. I promise from this day onwards, you’ll never be alone anymore.” She softly mumbled before she quietly left and headed back to where everyone was, with heavier emotion this time.

Ai was standing by a tree not far from where Risa was. She followed the younger though she insisted on going alone. She just couldn’t leave her all by herself at a vulnerable state. She’ll just watch from afar and wait. Not long after Risa stopped and stood a few meters away from Eri, she saw her turned around while wiping some tears from her face. Ai’s heart aches whenever she sees Risa sad and her heart bleeds whenever she sees her cry and she felt so helpless in times like this but she needed to be strong for her.
Risa was still trying to hold her tears and covered her mouth with her hand to not produce a loud sound. Ai took a couple of steps forward, and then the younger stopped from her track when she saw her shoes and so Risa held her head up to search for Ai’s eyes and when she did, she ran toward her and was readily enveloped by Ai’s two awaiting warm arms.
“Aichan”
“It’s okay, I’m here now.”
“But her mother...”
“I know. But it’s not your fault that her mother died. And I’m pretty sure your mother would have done the same thing in a situation like that. All you need to do now is to show her your innermost gratitude for saving you and for trying to save your parents.”
“But, Aichan”
“It’s okay, things will be okay. I promise”

As the sun crept over the trees and into the treetop house, Ai ran her fingertip from Risa’s forehead down to her chin, pausing a bit longer on the sleeping beauty’s nose and the half parted lips. Welcoming the first light of day is not her thing but waking up with Risa’s bare naked body beside her, she’d definitely welcome every dawn with a smile on her face.
As if sensing the burning stare, the object of her attention stirred and slowly opened her eyes but abruptly closed them back when they were greeted by the morning sunlight.
“Morning” greeted the older. With her eyes still closed, Risa only smiled, wrapped her hand on the girl’s waist and gave the older a peck on the cheek and rubbed her nose onto Ai’s neck before snuggling happily into her.
“You were incredible last night, you know that?” the short haired girl smiled sheepishly upon hearing the words and started to blush when the previous night’s affair flashed back in her mind. Bringing the blanket up and covering her head with it, Risa tried to conceal her flushing cheeks.
“Why are you hiding?” amused by the younger’s act, Ai asked and teased Risa with the widest smile she could muster. The younger did not respond and stayed silent under the covers but gave the older a pinch on her bare tummy instead.
“Oh, so you want to play? Okay.” Smirking, Ai sat up and straddled the unsuspecting Risa who was laying still under the blanket. Ai then gave the girl a continuous tickle, causing an involuntary twitching and laughter from the girl below her. And the only barrier between them was thrown in the process when the younger fought back for dominance. When Risa finally succeeded in taking control, the two were left without any body cover already.
Holding Ai’s writs with might, Risa gave the girl a winning look but when she finally noticed their bareness, her expression changed. Her eyes were starting to burn with desire and were met with a pair with the same interest. Pupils getting dilated, breathing became shallow and a slow friction of bodies started.
Risa leaned in slowly and was about to dive in for the kiss and Ai was laying there turning impatient every second that went by, when she heard someone speak.
“What are you doing here?!” Ai was startled upon hearing the words. She attempted to sit up in haste but just bounced back. Something from her clothing was stuck and was caught by the hanging net hammock she was peacefully resting on and dozed off after a few minutes of laying there.
“Jezzz! You scared me to death.”
“You’re sweating in a cold morning and under the shades of a tree, what’s wrong with you? And where’s your girlfriend?” continued the small figured girl who was towering over her.
“She’s not my girlfriend.” retorted Ai after making out who the girl was.
“Yeah right. You’re ‘sisters’. “
“Cousin, please leave my guest alone.”

“Eri! When did you arrive?” surprised by her cousin’s presence she asked the smiling Eri.
“Last night. Clubbing much?” Eri answered after opening her arms signaling for a hug. Reina obliged and marched forward toward her cousin without forgetting to wear a pout while morosely murmuring “You should have told me so that I’d stay home.”
“It was unplanned, Reina. You miss me that much?” Eri looked down inside her two arms to see her cousin’s face, fondly viewing the girl.
“Get out of here! Since when did Reina miss a person?!” quickly answering, she lowered and buried her face onto Eri’s chest to hide her reddening face. Of course she does. How can she not miss her when they practically grew up together and clung to each other before Eri and her dad left three years ago because of her dad’s work? And her return barely two weeks ago was a bad timing since she was sick and had to stay home and had to miss out the sports fest?
“Tsk! Still won’t accept it when you’re already caught red handed.”
“Yeah, yeah. Have you eaten breakfast already?” Reina looked up and asked her cousin, that’s when she noticed the puffiness of Eri’s eyes. Resting her head back on Eri’s chest, she tightened her hold hoping it could ease her cousin’s possible pain.
“I had some hot choco earlier.”
“I’ll help mom prepare lunch…” she broke the hug and was about to dash when Ai butted in.
“They went to the market.”
Forgetting for a moment that they had a company, the youngest woman slightly jumped in surprise. Facing the now standing beside the hammock Ai, she arched an eyebrow and curiously asked “They?”
“She went with Sayu and Risa.”
“Oh, so your girlfriend is here.” she casually said.
“How many times do I have to tell you that she’s not my girlfriend?”
“Okay! Sisters!” she glowered for a bit before facing her cousin with a smile “I’m gonna go get a shower, okay?”
“Good idea, freshen up and get your head cool down.” Messing Reina’s hair, Eri teased the yankii.
When Reina left and the two were left alone, Eri nervously cleared her throat before asking “Can you tell me more about her?”
Surprised at first, Ai jolted but gave Eri a smile not long after. “Where do I start?”
“After the accident if possible”
“Okay”
“Thank you” Eri then ushered Ai into one of the wooden benches. The two sat down in front of the vast meadow. After settling down, it was Ai’s turn to clear her throat and began her talk.
“My younger sister had an accident and fell into a coma for a month, but she died three days after she regained consciousness. She wasn’t able to withstand the injuries she suffered.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
“It’s okay. It’s been already over a decade, part of the past.” Glancing to her right, Ai gave a weak smile before continuing with the story.
“My mother was in denial for a period of time after my sister died. She continued visiting the hospital everyday as if my sister was still there. Father tried to stop her but every time he succeeded, my mother would only turn hysterical and would not eat, affecting her health significantly. My father accepted defeat and finally allowed my mother to visit the hospital provided that she’d eat. For a couple of days she was force swallowing her food just so she could go.” Ai paused and looked into Eri’s way “Better than nothing right?”
Without looking, Eri only nodded in agreement.
Returning to her original position, Ai continued “Not long after the agreement, she became lively again and was close to normal, it made my father and me happy of course but puzzled at the same time. Her eating habit was back and she would cook even. She’d even pack bento everyday and took it with her, the reason why my father decided to follow her one day and that’s when we found out that she’d met Risa at the hospital. After processing some papers and getting my father’s permission, she brought Risa home and she became my foster sister since then.”
Taking in a deep breath, Ai went on with her story “When mom died two years ago, I promised her that I’ll take good care and protect Risa in every way possible.” When Eri did not say a word, Ai decided to continue.
“We’ve heard about your mom from your Aunt this morning. Risa was so shocked and was so terrified when she heard about it.” The runner remained silent and her gaze never left the horizon in front of her.
“Did you know that she’s been searching for you, consciously and subconsciously, ever since before the day I met her?”
“No, I didn’t know.”

The sun was bright as Reina stepped out from the house. Droplets of water were noticeably falling from her wet hair from time to time. Three hours ago, the bed was so inviting when she stepped inside her room for a shower. ‘Five minutes’, that’s what she told herself when she laid on her bed for a quick nap but woke up only after more than two hours, the reason why she dressed in a hurry after getting out from the shower and dashed toward the door without properly drying her long burgundy colored hair.
She’s starving. It was past 12 noon. A little bit late for her usual lunch and not to mention she’d skipped breakfast again. Outside, she saw her cousin and three others. They were having a backyard barbecue under the shades of a tree. With a growling tummy, she marched forward with quicker steps toward her cousin’s direction.
“Oh, Reina, you’re just in time.” Eri said after noticing her approaching cousin and gestured in the direction of the grilled meat she knows her cousin loves, which of course made Reina licked her upper lip unknowingly. Eri was already holding a plate, in the process of choosing and picking from the array of food set on the table.
“And don’t droll too much.” Sayu added. She was already sitting and happily munching some grilled squid by the table.
Wide eyed, Reina suddenly exclaimed “Sayu! You know Eri’s allergic to seafood, why are we having grilled squid here?!”
Taken aback, Sayu reached out and took her glass of water. She was coughing after almost getting choked on her food. Hitting her chest with one hand, she gulped down and emptied the glass she was holding with the other.
“It’s Aichan’s favorite.” Risa’s short reply. She was also getting her food along with Ai and Eri. Reina groaned inwardly. Not sure if it’s because of the poor squids’ presence or because Risa knows Ai more than she does. Slightly irritated, she picked a plate up with extra force added and stood beside her cousin to get her food.
Sensing her cousin’s slight changed of mood, Eri took a piece of yakiniku up by her chopsticks and placed it on Reina’s plate. “There, eat. I put extra love when grilling it.” Reina looked up and giggled after seeing her cousin’s weird looking wink and snorted in amusement, “Silly”
“And here” she picked a grilled squid and was about to put it on Risa’s plate when Ai butted in “She’s also allergic to that one.”
“Oh.” an uncomfortable silence took place. That was Eri’s first attempt to interact with Risa since her guest arrived in the morning. Risa was still nervous around Eri. Eri was still not sure how to act around Risa. Both were still uneasy around each other. When Sayu and Risa got back from the market, all they did was prepare the food. Risa was washing and preparing them and Sayu was taking them to Eri and Ai who were in charge of grilling them, making the two unable to communicate plus the fact that the two were deliberately avoiding each other.
The grilled seafood was airborne with Eri’s chopsticks for a couple of seconds. Risa was about to get it when the youngest butted in “I’ll take that.” taking it from Eri’s, Reina took a big bite of it. “Yummy”
“Really? I guess Ai added some love to it too when she grilled it” playfully said by the runner. Slowly chewing the food inside her mouth, Reina glanced at the oldest but the oldest was not paying any attention, she was busy stuffing her plate with some food.

Lightly pushing her feet on the ground from time to time to sway the hammock she was sitting on as gently as she could, Eri never turned her attention away from her guests who were laying on a picnic blanket that Reina had lent them. Everyone decided to take a nap after cleaning everything up. The two of course obviously were not dozing off because Eri could still hear a faint conversation coming from them.
“What are you looking at?” asked the girl who’s been resting on the hammock with Eri. The runner blinked a few times before turning her head to look at her, but Reina’s eyes was closed when she found them.
“Nothing”
Reina did not counter. Her two arms continued to rest on Eri’s waist, sending warm comfort. Her hand continued to gently tap her cousin’s lap, telling she’s still awake. And she continued to sing softly with her lips closed, filling the air.
Witnessing the laid-back ambiance, Eri smiled before her eyes fixated again on the guests. That’s when she saw Ai stood up and headed toward the house, leaving Risa alone. And at that moment, tension built up a little inside her.
Mustering all the courage she has, she thought loudly “It’s now or never.” and attempted to stand up but her cousin’s arms were still around her.
Noticing the movement and hearing the words, Reina asked with eyes half opened “Where are you going?”
“I need to take care of something.”
Seeing her older cousin’s smile, Reina tapped her cousins’ lap one last time and let go. Eri then stood up but did not leave without messing Reina’s hair first, earning some grumble from the younger. Reina then lifted her head a little and her eyes followed the runner, wondering where she’s heading to. And then she saw Risa at the other end. Slumping onto the hammock, she grumbled more.

“Can we talk?”
“Huh?” slightly blinded by the light the sun was producing after opening her eyes, Risa blinked several times in order to make out who the person standing next to her was. “Oh” Risa quickly sat up when she finally recognized the person who asked her. She was shaken up a little, it’s either because she was taken aback or because of the fact that it was Eri. With a feeling of panic building inside her, she waited for Eri to sit down but a hand was offered instead. She looked up and saw a smiling Eri still with her hand in the air. Risa hesitated at first but took the hand in the end, panic gradually subsiding after seeing the smile she was given.

When Ai got out from the house after accomplishing a nature’s call, something caught her eyes or rather someone. It was Risa’s retreating back along with Eri’s.
“What’s with that look? Your girlfriend left without telling?”
Ignoring Reina’s intent, she asked “Where are they going?”
Reina only shrugged and went back to her previous position on the hammock.
After taking one last glance at her best friend’s back, she marched forward to where Reina was “Rei, I think we need to talk.”
Not moving an inch, Reina responded in a flat voice. “There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Yes there is… that night.”
Reina sat up and glared before her mouth opened and words came out. “That was the past! You hear me?! Past! There’s no need to bring it back!” Reina blurted but Ai remained calm.
When Reina slumped onto the hammock once again and with her arms on her face, Ai stepped closer and decided to sit gently on the hammock.
“If only I could turn back the hands of time Rei, I would. And I would never get as wasted as I was back then, because up till now I’m regretting that I ruined our friendship because of my recklessness. I was so sorry then and I am still sorry now, that I was weak and stupid during that night.”
After waiting and not getting any reaction from the younger, Ai continued “It’s been over a year now Rei, can you still not forgive me?”
Reina did not answer. Instead she shifted from her position, facing her back on Ai. “What do you want me to do to earn that forgiveness, Rei?”
“Stop calling me Rei and please leave me alone.” The voice was weak and was almost inaudible. She was fighting not to tremble, fighting hard not to sob. When Ai finally stood up and left, her tears began to flow. Reliving the pain she had during that fateful night, she mumbled “The kiss was not the reason Ai, because I’ve always longed for it ever since I met you. Having you in my bed was not the reason either, because it was always my dream to become one with you. It was not when you kissed me on my forehead after we made love, because my heart jumped in joy when you did it. It was not when you said I love you, because hearing it was like a dream come true. It was when you closed your eyes and I was feeling so high only to be crushed when you whispered her name and not mine.”
“AICHAN!”

A high-pitched voice echoed from a distance causing Reina to turn her head and look where Sayu’s voice came from. The bunny was running while frantically calling out Ai’s name. With her heartbeat racing, she followed Sayu’s vision only to make her eyes grew wide because she saw Ai laying on the ground, seemed motionless.
Too stunned, her body froze and could only watch as Sayu tugged Ai’s sleeves when she reached her but the girl did not budge. When her senses finally came back and without thinking any further, Reina jumped out of the hammock without her shoes on and scurried down the graveled pathway toward where Ai and Sayu were.
And then a ripple of fear ran through Reina’s body at the sight. Ai had a cut on her forehead and blood was slowly seeping through the broken skin. With her body starting to tremble, Reina kneeled down beside the frightened Sayu and called out Ai’s name too, but just like Sayu no reply was received from the oldest. Ai was totally unconscious.
“Sayu! What happened?!” her voice started to quiver, her hands started to sweat, her eyes started to water again.
“I don’t know… she just collapsed.”

The two was walking side by side on an unpaved road next to a riverbank. They arrived at the location in silence, until Eri spoke “Not much has changed in twelve years.” Eri then took a sideway glance and smiled when she caught Risa’s eyes. Pausing in her steps, she continued “My mother used to take me here every morning when I was little. She loved it here, and I grew to love it too.” The older smiled back meekly with a gentle nod, no idea what to say. And they resumed walking.
Seeing an old wooden bench, Eri stopped from her track and so was Risa. Eri solemnly stared at it for quite a while before stepping forward to where the bench was located. “This is where she’d lay me down every time she was successful in catching me from our tag and chase game.” the voice was weak and nostalgic. Hearing it, a pressure was building behind Risa’s eyes, until she was silently wiping her tears away with her two hands.
With her heart aching, Risa continued to stare at the runner’s back. And then she saw Eri brought her right hand up and ran her fingers on some markings the bench had. With Risa’s perfect vision, she noticed the markings were old and shabby. And despite the fact that they were messily carved, she was able to read them, ‘Oka-han and Kame-han’s favorite spot’ it says.
Shifting her gaze back at the runner, she witnessed Eri’s trembling body for a split second and that’s when Risa was no longer able to control her emotions. She ran and wrapped her arms around Eri’s shoulders “I’m so sorry” Risa uttered in pain. “What can I do to lessen your sorrow?”
“Just continue holding me tight.” trying so hard to hide her pain, Eri uttered but the tremors in her voice betrayed her.
Letting her tears fall down and with her pain doubled, Risa tightly hugged the girl even more.

The sun was hiding behind the gathering dark clouds, and then a light suddenly flashed in the sky. Early darkness was looming, chilly wind blows started to reign. The overall picture was gloomy and so as the face of the lady with a band-aid on her forehead. With her gaze fixed on the gateway, Ai stood by the porch, not moving an inch. Her mood was getting more upset in every passing minute that anyone could tell just by looking at the expression of her face. Her attention was elsewhere, her cup of tea that was placed on the wooden railing, which was prepared by Sayu, was untouched and the smoke it emitted was vanishing. It was starting to get cold just like her surrounding.
On the other end of the porch, her other two companions were silently sipping their tea. They too were looking at the gate but unlike her, Reina and Sayu were glancing at her from time to time, worried. Not long ago, the two were covered with concern and panic when Ai suddenly collapsed. They even bombarded the older with questions when she became conscious again and asked her to go to the hospital for medical check up but the older insisted that she’s okay and just a bandage will do. Lack of sleep was the cause, she reasoned.
One of the two stared at Ai with a hint of sadness in her eyes, full of questions running inside her mind. ‘Why can’t you look at me like you look at her? Why can’t you give me even a fraction of the feelings you reserved just for her? Why is it her and not me, Ai?’ quickly wiping her tear using her index finger, the lone tear failed to land and glide down her cheek. Looking up and taking a deep breath, Reina let out a silent mournful sigh.
Moments later, Sayumi was no longer calm when the rain started to descend and the surrounding was already engulfed in darkness. She was pacing back and forth “Where the heck are you, Eri!?” she blurted loudly.
“Stop it Sayu! You’re making us worry too!” Reina exclaimed, but failed to conceal her fret.
And then deafening thunders started to roar. The wind picked up its speed. The treetops whipped to and fro in a creepy manner. That’s when Ai moved and asked for a flashlight but Reina refused to give her one.
“She’s afraid of thunders, I need to find them!” she firmly uttered while looking into the yankii’s eyes, begging at the same time.
“Ten more minutes and we’ll act after that.” Reina calmly said, not breaking their eye contact.
“I think Reina is right Aichan. Let’s wait for a little while.”
Seeing Ai’s desperate expression made Reina’s heart cry in a manner more painful than the wounds she earned from jumping and running on the graveled pathway earlier. ‘Would you give that look if I was the one out there, Ai?’ Reina carried that question in her eyes but opted to bury it inside her, not letting it be known especially to the one she dearly adores.

“That was funny.” Eri was bursting into uncontrollable laughter after glancing sideways. She didn’t intend to laugh but couldn’t help it when the previous event flashed back inside her mind. How the slightly older woman reacted when the thunder erupted. “Definitely you’re not labeled as the reaction queen for nothing” she added while trying to control her laughs.
“It ain’t funny!”
“Oh believe me, it was. You looked like a scardy cat out there.”
“Mou...” Risa broke her eye contact with the turtle and stared on her wet sneakers stomping on the accumulated rain water, pouting. Extracting more giggles from the turtle.
“What are you two laughing at?” Reina’s voice penetrated the noise that the rain produced, gaining the attention of the two rain-drenched women.
“Oh hi! I didn’t notice you’re here.” greeted the turtle after seeing the three staring at them.
“Of course you won’t, you’re too busy looking and holding someone’s hand.” The yankii growled through clenched teeth.
“What’s wrong with you?” asked the smiling Eri.
“What’s wrong with me?!” Reina’s voice raised a few octaves higher than normal “Oh, nothing much, we’re just here waiting and worrying about you two while you...”
“Ano...” Risa butted in and was about to say more when a lightning struck and a crashing thunder followed, making her jump and run frantically while screaming at the same time, totally scared. She was trembling, her eyes clamping shut and was babbling incoherent words whilst clinging onto someone tightly.
Pivoting from her feelings of concern and jealousy, Ai finally let her smile grow, when giggles echoed inside and outside the porch after regaining their composure back.
When the growling of the thunders finally subsided and her fear somewhat gone, Risa opened her eyes and looked at the eyes of the person she bear-hugged.
“Was I really overly reacting?” she softly whispered
“Kind of”
Wearing her puppy eyes and her pouty lips, Risa continued “But I was totally scared”
“I know”
“I’m sorry we made you all worried.” The bean uttered in a low voice after letting out a sigh.
Messing the bean’s wet hair at first and then running her fingers through the hair, trying to untangle the mess by combing it with her fingers, Ai replied “It’s okay. You’re safe, that’s all that matters. Why don’t you go take a hot bath before you catch a cold?”
“How about you and I soak in the tub together?” Eri suggested not looking. She was bending down, unlacing her shoes, totally unaware of the people’s reactions.
After hearing the offer, Ai stiffened. Her eyes then focused on Risa’s face, trying to decipher the bean’s thoughts. Risa seemed like she’s contemplating about the offer. She was even playing with Ai’s shirt’s hem and her face turned redder in every second that went by.
‘Will Risa say yes?’ ‘What will I do if she will?’ ‘And when did deciphering Risa’s thought become hard?’ Ai’s train of thoughts was cut when the bean opened her mouth to respond, which made her heartbeat race and waited anxiously for the words to assemble.
“Oh, it’s okay. You go first, I’ll bathe after you.” Ai was not sad with the bean’s answer neither totally happy with it. Negative ideas were still running inside her head, but she was relieved nonetheless.
“Are you sure?” Eri asked tilting her head to the side while eyeing the bean. When Risa nodded, she gave out a sweet smile and headed toward the house. But before reaching the door, she paused and ruffled the yankii’s hair and scampered away toward the house entrance whilst laughing.
“She’s so happy” was all Sayu could say.
“Whatever it is that you’ve done that make her this happy… I’m grateful.” Reina mumbled before following the turtle. “And if I were you, I’d better go inside or I’d be dealing with cold.” She added.
“Aichan, lets go prepare for our ba... Achoo!”

It felt weird bathing alone when the other party was just right outside waiting for her turn. This is their first time not being together in a bath in twelve years.
Mama Takahashi was always making it sure that they would always take a bath together when Risa was brought to the Takahashi household. For two reasons, one, to make Risa feel at home and never feel alone, and two, to make her two girls’ bond be stronger, until they got used to it that none would go into the bathroom when the other was not yet around.
Risa took a deep breath after submerging fully one last time. “Okay, I’m done.” she mumbled as she got out and wrapped her wet body with a Minnie Mouse printed towel. Holding the towel to secure it with one hand, she pulled the plug out to drain the water with the other. After that she walked to get her clothes in the corner and put them on.
After a while, she was in front of a mirror, taking her time drying her hair with the hair dryer that Eri had lent her whilst waiting for the water to fill the tub up again. Holding the device made her remember about the time she shared with the turtle at the riverbank. How they gradually opened up and created a comfortable ambiance in the process. And somehow, learn to trust each other. It all started after the long moment of silent cries, when Risa took the initiative to break the silence after composing herself. That was when she took the charm out from her bracelet and put it on Eri’s necklace, where it originally belonged. The turtle was taken aback at first but a genuine smile then followed. Recalling it sure did make Risa’s mood lighten up.
Putting off and setting down the device, the bean walked toward the tub and immersed her hand to test the water’s temperature “Perfect” and headed out after shutting the tap off.
Feeling fresh and clean, Risa went downstairs to look for Ai. Humming a random song, she swayed here and there while walking. When she was not able to locate Ai inside the house, she decided to head to the porch. Slowly opening the door, she stuck her head out and peeked. And then a smile crept across her face when she saw her best friend’s back in one of the corners of the porch, standing and alone.
Risa was about to call out Ai’s name when someone’s head tilted to the side, revealing a small part of a forehead and a portion of her hair. Her heartbeat stopped for a moment. And then a low husky groan followed which made both of her ears twitched. Her eyes grew wider when the hidden person’s left hand crawled and buried her fingers in Ai’s hair.
A lump was building inside her throat, tears were brimming and ready to glide down, and her heart was palpitating at a faster rate. The same feelings the first time she accidentally saw them kissed.
“But why? Why am I feeling this way?” confused, she closed the door slowly in order to disturb not the two, just like the way she did when she saw Reina and Ai kissed almost two years ago.

“Did you hear something?” the older asked the yankii with one closed eye and both hands held tightly onto the edge of her own shirt, as if seeking for its support.
“Yes. The angry sound caused by the heavy droplets of rain and your growls. You’re like a baby sometimes. It’s just an antiseptic for goddess’s sake Ai.”
“But it hurts.”
Rolling her eyes, Reina refused to counter and continued her grip on Ai’s head while the other was holding a swab that gently touched the lacerated skin on Ai’s forehead. She was totally focused on the task at hand, trying so hard to limit the growls emitted by the older when the swab makes a contact with the broken skin as much as possible. Because whenever Ai winced in pain, she couldn’t help but feel the pain at the same time.
After finishing the cleansing part, she then took the new set of bandage she’d set aside after putting some antibacterial ointment on the gauze pad a while ago. And then placed it over top of the cut and neatly applied the adhesive tape on the edges of the bandage to hold it in place.
After inspecting and feeling content with her work, she dusted her hands against each other, breathed out a long one and smiled. “There.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re in my house, so it’s only proper that I’ll take care of the people who visit since both of my parents are not around.”
Ai and Reina had a physical collision a while ago. Ai was getting inside while the yankii was stepping outside. Ai was looking at the piece of cloth she was using to clean the wet floor while Reina was looking sideways and abruptly turned her head when she sensed someone was coming but was too late. And they collided head-on, making the wound bleed again.
“Refrain from getting it wet and keep it dry as much as possible, it might swell.” The yankii added while putting everything back into the kit.
“Yes doc.”
“Tch!” Reina glared at the smiling Ai for a split second before continuing “Let’s get inside and see if Sayu and Eri are done preparing dinner.” The younger walked toward the main door with the first aid kit in hand without looking back.
And Ai was trailing behind her, still smiling. Glad that the younger’s slowly destroying the barrier between them. “This is a nice new start.” She faintly mumbled.

“Who wrecked the kitchen?” Two out of the three persons by the kitchen counter only looked into each other and giggled when the question was asked by Reina.
“You’re supposed to be reheating ONLY those barbeque in the oven.”
Seeing her cousin’s reaction, Eri fiddled with her fingers and gave out a goofy smile before commencing her speech. “Gaki-san gave us an advice on how to do it without making the meat dry out. Hence the presence of those.” referring to the foil, olive oil bottle, broth wrappers and some utensils that were inelegantly sprawled on the sink and not to mention the presence of some sprinkled variety of powder and greasy substance on it.
“And she’s making us a soup. Yay!” the Bunny merrily interjected.
“Perfect for the cold weather, nee Sayu?”
“Nee?”
“And who signed up for the cleaning part?” Reina, hands on her hips, asked the two.
When no one was willing to answer, the oldest offered “Okay, I’ll do it.” Again, giving out a goofy smile, Eri and Sayu bowed down their heads slightly and giggled once more.
Grunting, Reina walked toward the cupboard while Ai marched toward where Risa was standing and stopped at the bean’s back.
“Hmmm, smells good.” she complimented after smelling the soup’s aroma. In times like this, Risa would always take a spoon and make Ai taste the soup, but this time the Bean did not say a word neither did she move to at least look back and acknowledge Ai’s presence, leaving the older in wonder.
After setting the table, the yankii sat down and waited for the others and the food whilst looking here and there silently observing her surrounding. Of course Risa’s deliberate act of neglecting Ai did not go unnoticed. The Bean would only converse with Eri and Sayu but when it’s Ai, she would only nod or say yes or no if asked and would not even take a look at the latter.
It’s not the first time that Risa had neglected her and during those times she would only laugh at it because she knows Risa’s anger would not last that long. But this time it bothered her. Seeing Risa’s sweet smile directed to Eri was crushing her heart. Jealousy was slowly surfacing again. It was suffocating.
“Aichan, why don’t you sit and wait here with me, you all looked cramped in there. The kitchen’s too small for the four of you.”
Thinking it’s best to leave the three, Ai obliged. On her way, Ai smiled at the yankii. Thinking about Reina’s gesture made her happy. Happy that the invisible wall between them is now vanishing, not totally but at least there’s now a bigger and brighter light that’s seeping through their clouded relationship. There’s now more hope.
They sat there in silence but not the awkward kind of silence. It was comfortable. The scenario, in some ways, made Ai forget about her previous gloomy feeling and her smile stayed.
But beyond everyone’s knowledge, one heart ached at the sudden turn of events. It’s not that she’s not happy that they are now slowly rebuilding their friendship but it pains her to see them for some unknown reasons especially when the scene at the porch kept flashing back inside her mind.
After a while, all five gathered around the table and said their itadakimasu. A conversation took place from time to time but the atmosphere was silent most of the time. Sayu was slowly savoring the steaming hot soup. Eri, who was sitting next to Sayu, would pick pieces of barbecue from the Bunny’s plate. Risa, who sat in front of Eri’s, was silently eating. Next to Risa was Ai, who was focused on her food. While Reina sat at one of the corners of the six-sitter rectangle dining table.
“Aichan, what’s that on your forehead.” Eri asked after noticing the bandage with slight wide eyes.
Looking up to meet Eri’s eyes she answered “Oh, it’s nothing.”
Risa, whose ears twitched at the question, was tempted to look sideways but her incomprehensible emotion overshadowed it and so she resisted.
“She fell this afternoon.”
This time Risa stiffened.

“Okay. So, who’s sharing a bed?” the Bunny asked as they, in their pajamas, looked at the three twin size futons neatly laid on the floor.
Eri and Reina moved first, but toward two different directions. On the left’s side futon, Eri flopped onto the bed while Reina gently laid her body on the bed located at the right, leaving the three guests still standing at the foot of the futon situated at the center.
Ai was about to go to the center futon and so was Risa, but she caught Eri’s smiling face and the non-verbal offer directed at the Bean. Witnessing it made her time froze for a moment. And when her senses came back, Sayu was already on the center futon, arranging her cushion.
As if it was all so natural and a casual thing to do, Ai walked toward the right side and delicately sat at the edge of the bed, as if testing the water if it was okay to share the bed with her. The occupant, who was facing the wall, moved a little without looking back to give a little more space for the guest. And that was Ai’s cue and she lay there, beside the girl who she had shared her first experience with being an adult some months ago, in one bed.
After seeing that Ai had already settled next to Reina, Risa dragged her feet and walked toward the direction of Eri’s bed. Trying hard to hide her frustration, she smiled.
“I guess I’ll be sleeping alone and lonely tonight.” The Bunny joked and sighed before covering her whole body with her blanket.
And there was silence.
When everyone seemed on their way to dreamland, the Bunny’s voice echoed again. “By the way, just in case… you know… lower your voices will you.” That’s when the attacks of flying cushion towards her started and some swearing after that.

“Irasshaimase” the greeting of an attendant echoed with delight when a girl wearing a black and white striped sweat pants, a black top and a pair of silver sneakers entered the shop.
Lowering the volume of her earphone, the newly arrived customer smiled at the attendant and headed to her usual spot and neatly sat at her favorite by the window chair.
“The usual?”
“Yes please.”
“Set B coming right up.”
“Thanks”
Moments later, the lively attendant came back with a tray. “A pair of our delicious pancakes with extra honey, and a cup of hot choco with extra marshmallows added on the side. And as always, limited drinking water is on the house. Please enjoy your meal Takahashi-san. I will be at that corner if you need anything. Just call my name and I’ll be here as fast as Superwoman because I am Linlinman.”
Grinning and letting out a few good chuckles, Ai slightly bowed and mouthed a thank you to the attendant who in turn bowed a little deeper than normal.
A few days after their trip to Eri’s place, this had become a part of Ai’s morning routine, breakfast at the shop after a morning walk. Leaving the house early and heading back home when Risa’s already leaving, and sometimes had already gone to school, became a habit. Because when the foster sisters returned home, some things have changed. There was an awkward gap, an invisible barrier in between them. But both refused to talk about it and went on with their lives avoiding tackling the issue. Risa got closer to Eri while Ai hung out with Reina from time to time. The first few days were not that easy because every time she’d arrived at an empty house, it made her feel that her heart’s being ripped out. But as days became weeks and weeks became months, she got used to it with some help of the attendant’s antics.
“Wait a sec. Is that a bruise on your neck?”
“Oh. It’s nothing Takahashi-san, I was careless last night.” replied Linlin as she hurriedly covered it up with her hand.
“May I take a look at it?” sensing that there’s something off with the bruise, she asked.
“There’s no need for you to worry Takahashi-san, it will heal in no time.”
“We’re friends right?”
“Of course, we are. And I’m very grateful that I’ve earned a friend here in Japan.”
“You trust me.”
“With my life.”
“Who’s the jerk that did that to you?”
“It was my fault.”
“You’re boss.” It was more of a statement not a question. From the start, Ai sensed something with the way Linlin’s boss’s treating her.
Linlin did not respond, she averted her gaze and looked at the floor instead. Her hand started to tremble as it tried to hide again the bruise, now by her shirt’s collar.
“Why not leave and find another job.”
“It’s not that simple. We still owe him some money.”
The door opened with customers coming in, and so Linlin excused herself to attend to the newly arrived customers.
...
“Headache again?”
“Different kind of headache.” Ai smiled as she handed her pay. “Can I borrow a pen?”
“Yea, sure” Ai scribbled something on a piece of paper before handing it to Linlin
“That’s my number. Call me anytime, okay?”
Staring at Ai’s eyes, she choked out a ‘Thank you’ and humbly smiled.

“Ai and I will go catch a movie, you wanna come?” Reina asked the other three at their usual place. They were eating sweets and sipping some smoothies at a cafeteria where they hang out almost every single day after school.
“No, we have other plan” was Risa’s reply which made Eri tilt her head and look at her with puzzlement.
“Aren’t we going to that newly opened shop you mentioned yesterday?”
“Oh yeah, I forgot. So, Sayu, shopping or movie?”
“I wanna go shopping but I wanna watch a horror movie with Reina.”
“I’m not sitting in the middle again this time. Please have mercy on my eardrums and my thin poor arms.”
Giggles erupted.
“But admit it, you like my hugs more than Aichan’s manly screams, I so could feel it without you telling.” A wink from the bunny then followed which made Reina cringed from her seat. “You are so blushing.”
“No I’m not!”
“Yes, you are” countered the bunny in a singsong manner.
”I’m afraid I can’t come today.” Ai’s statement silenced the ongoing bickering. All eyes on her.
“Don’t be jealous Aichan. I was just kidding… or not?”
“Silly” said Ai as she smiled at the Bunny’s remark.
“Shut up Sayu. Why?”
“I need to meet someone. It’s kinda important.” Ai said as she waved her phone before putting it back inside her bag and continued “I’m gonna eat out again tonight, don’t wait for me and be sure to lock the doors.”
“Un” was Risa’s short reply.

Risa was discreetly following and observing the apple of her eyes form a few yards. She was also busy clicking her cam-phone, capturing some candid pictures of her long time secretly-so-admired friend. The object of her desire was busy styling her hair in front of a mirror and so her captured pictures were mostly of back view and side view poses.
When her secretly-so-loved friend was finished, turned around and walked towards her direction, she changed her position to appear busy with other things. But a pair of eyes was observing her for some time without her knowing.

“Where am I?” squinting her eyes to adjust to the ceiling light, the girl on the bed asked when she saw her friend to her left, in a room that she find unfamiliar.
“Takahashi-san, are you alright?”
“Yeah, I guess. Where am I?”
“Hospital”
“Linlin” she whined.
“I know you said no hospitals, but I can’t stand doing nothing when I know my friend’s definitely not in good shape. It’s not the first time you collapsed Takahashi-san” Hearing Linlin’s explanation somehow caused a smile to appear on Ai’s face. The girl’s not only funny and innocent but so thoughtful as well.
“Can we follow the doctor’s order this time? Just this once so that we can live in peace, please?” the first time Linlin brought her to a hospital, Ai was stubborn. Laboratory request was thrown into the trash bin. And right then and there, she discharged herself from the hospital.
Ai’s not comfortable with hospital surrounding since the day her sister died. And when Linlin tried to talk to her about the lab tests, ‘she was feeling okay those tests ain’t needed’ was her explanation. But seeing Linlin’s pleading look now, somehow made her think twice.
“Just this once and we’ll drop it for good?”
“Yes.”
“Okay deal.”

Sitting on one of the benches at the hospital’s park, Ai was in deep silence as she stared into nothingness. It was quiet, save for the sound of birds chirping and the tree branches cracking sound. She seemed deep in thought, but in reality nothing concrete was running inside her head. It was almost empty. Lost.
Her consciousness only came back to life when she felt a warm feeling over her hand which was resting on her lap. Glancing at it, she saw a hand over hers. After staring at the hand for a few second, she then brought her eyes up to see it’s owner, only to be greeted by a pair of eyes with tears gliding down her cheeks. And then Ai meekly smiled. She can’t blame Linlin for acting that way because if she’s in her shoes, she’d do the same. And she’d definitely freak out.
Tapping the girl on her back, she tried to comfort her crying friend. Friends do not really react well when they hear the words ‘brain tumor’. But who would? She wouldn't.
“There are remedies.”
“Un.”
“Please do undergo treatment.”

“Reina, I was just asking you to take good care of yourself and the rest. What’s wrong with that?”

“What’s happening to us?” though the voice was low and soft, the newly arrived girl was startled upon hearing someone speak, but she immediately collected herself after recognizing the voice.
The room was covered in darkness and the only illumination it had was from the light outside the open door. Slowly, Ai reached for the light switch and turned it on. She did not expect Risa to be there, waiting and sitting at the edge of her bed let alone in darkness. She knew from the very start, the younger’s not very fond of darkness when she’s all by herself, she’s not that brave.
Risa, after so many weeks of not being able to hold a decent conversation with Ai, finally got a hold of her best friend without any distraction this time. She purposely stayed awake and waited for Ai at her bedroom. For how long, it definitely did not matter to the bean.
When the light flickered, she searched for Ai’s eyes and asked again. “What’s happening to us, Aichan?”
Ai opened her mouth to respond but then she fell silent after seeing the younger’s forlorn eyes. Tonight’s the first time she saw Risa looked so helpless. And then nothing came out from her half opened mouth. Her rehearsed alibis were all forgotten and a vague sense of unease crept up inside her.
“Is it really because of that girl you’ve been seeing?”
Ai stayed quiet and looked sideways. How’s she going to answer such question when deep inside her, her heart’s been beating for her alone?
“Do you love her more than you care for me that you’re now having no time for the both of us?”
Stepping a few back steps, the older leaned against the wall as she kept her silence, eyes on the floor, but ears continued to listen.
Bringing her vision down on her trembling hands that were resting on her lap, the bean took a deep breath before she continued. “Do you love her that much that you are now leaving me all alone?” the words came out with Risa’s uneven voice, as if choked with her restrained emotion.
This time, Ai’s eyes quickly landed on her closet where the bag she’d prepared days before was placed. The thought of Risa’s devastating reaction upon seeing the luggage made her body quiver, made her heart throb.
“What about me Aichan?” hearing Risa’s weak and pained voice was like a dagger slashing her heart. It made her wants to run and hug Risa with all her might, but what good would it make? It would only make them suffer more. She can’t drag Risa in. She can’t afford to make Risa suffer of losing someone all over again. The risk is just too high. She has Eri now and keeping it that way is the best option there is.
Burying her true emotion deep inside her, she let out a silent sigh. She gathered all her energy and dragged her feet toward her closet. And then took out the packed bag and a jacket.
“What’s wrong? Can’t we talk it out?” Risa sounded almost begging, but Ai stood firm, her mind stood firm though her heart was madly aching.
“I need to go Risa.”
“Why?”
The older did not respond but took her steps toward the door without even looking at the devastated bean.
“Don’t you walk out on me this time Takahashi!” Risa’s voice was trembling but unbending. “I had enough of this bullshit!” the short haired girl continued. Ai was surprised at the bean’s tone. This is her first time hearing such tone.
She turned around and looked at Risa’s eyes. That’s when she saw a tear threatening to fall from the younger’s eyes but was briskly wiped away. Anger and pain was written all over Risa’s face. Ai took a step to move closer to the bean to console her but her phone beeped.
“Moshi-moshi”
…
“Okay”
…
“I’ll be right there in a minute.”
…
“Bye.”
After ending the call and returning the phone inside her pocket, Ai paused for a moment. But after a few seconds, she picked the bag up again and turned her back on Risa and again, started to walk.
“What about me Aichan?!” she blurted, now with tears descending one after the other. Ai stopped from her track but again, did not look back. She was trying to conceal her pained expression and her silent tears that started to glide down her cheeks.
“What about me?” Risa complained again in between sobs.
“You’ll be fine. The trust fund and the money in the bank are more than enough to last a lifetime”
“You know that wasn’t what I meant!” Risa’s voice raised, her hands thrown onto the air, exasperated.
“You have Eri now, you’ll be fine.”
“Oh god. What really is your problem?!”
Ai did not respond and so Risa exclaimed again “Can’t you tell me, just this once, what it is that’s so bothering you? Don’t I deserve to know what the reason behind all these is? Why don’t you kill me now Takahashi! I’ll die anyway! Wait, let me get a weapon for you!” a drawer creaked as it opened, a rummaging sound then followed.
At that moment, Ai became intensely tense. And so she threw her bag away and faced the bean. “I’m in love with my foster sister! That is the problem!” Ai blurted. Her voice was no longer controlled. All her contained emotions wanted to explode. Her eyes were brimming with tears too. She was shaking.
Taken aback, Risa was lost for words.
“I’m so in love with you that I’m becoming irrational. I’m so in love with you that I’m feeling I’ll be insane any minute. I’m so in love with you that it pains me seeing you everyday. I’m so in love with you that it hurts just to breathe.” Ai’s grip on Risa’s shoulders loosened as her tears continued to flow. “Please, let me catch my breath.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” almost a whisper, Risa asked.
“If I had said I love you, would you have said I love you too?”
Risa was still stunned, too stunned to respond to the question. And then there was silence, until a knock on the open door was heard. When they looked toward the entryway, a smiling Eri greeted the two. She was in the process of removing her headphone from her ears when she asked the two “Am I interrupting something?”
“No. You’re just in time.” discreetly, Ai wiped her tears away after removing her hands from the bean’s shoulders. She glanced one last time at the somewhat lost Risa before stepping to get her bag and toward the door. She paused when she was side by side Eri. “Please take good care of her… please?”
“I will keep my promise I made to you this morning, you can count on that. And please don’t lose hope and keep on fighting. Don’t lose to those bad cells.”
“Thank you.” Ai smiled before she stared down at the floor, paused for a moment and uttered a word one last time
“Goodbye.”

Though her forefinger was playing with the rim of the cup, Risa Niigaki had her undivided attention on the closed establishment situated across the street. She’s been sitting at the coffee shop for over an hour and had already gulped down coffee more than her usual dose.
A couple of hours ago, she received the information she’s been anxiously waiting for for the past eighteen months from the private detective she’d hired a month after Ai left. The day when everything finally sank in. The day after her days of bawling ended and her good senses kicked in. And so, without a second thought, she took the bullet train right then and there. Destination, the City of Trees, Ai’s present location.
The feeling of excitement and fear were pivoting within her as fast as the vehicle that’s carrying her toward her destination. Patience is one of her virtues but the current circumstance was an exemption. The two hour travel seemed like an eternity and it certainly annoyed her.
When the train came to a full stop and opened its doors, she was so excited but afraid at the same time. And the moment she did set foot in the land where her Ai’s living at, her legs became numb for a few good seconds. It was like a dream come true but it also gave out a too good to be true feeling.
Sipping her now cold coffee, she glanced at her wrist watch. It was still early and the bar across the street will only open in an hour. And as the clock continued to tick, her feeling of fear and uneasiness were filling her entire being, it’s like they’re consuming her wholly. Truth be told, she’s scared.
‘How is she going to approach her? What will her first word be? When’s the perfect time to go see her when she finds her?’ so many questions were running inside her head and somehow she’s becoming more coward when the questions kept popping in.
‘Can she do it? Will she be brave enough to do it?’ within the months of trying to find her, these questions never surfaced in her head. But now that she’s a few minutes away, the questions keep popping one after the other causing her knees to wobble and her heart to palpitate.
She had not thought about those questions. The only thing that was inside her mind from yesterday backwards was to find Ai. So many questions but she only have one thing certain, she wants Ai back so badly. So many questions but she only have one sole weapon, and that is she loves Ai deeply. And she’s definitely not leaving the place without letting Ai know her real feelings.
Seeing that the bar’s finally open for business, Risa gulped down the remainder of her coffee. With her slowly building determination, she uttered “It’s now or never” and left the shop.
After entering into the establishment, Risa looked for the place that resembles a stage right away. But no Ai was there when she found it. The stage was empty. Music was playing in the background but obviously it came from a stereo system. She further scanned the cozy place in hopes of finding the girl but again, no Ai was found within her range of vision.
Finding a faster way on how to find Ai, Risa marched toward the counter where two baristas were smiling. The ceiling was heavily decorated with paper lanterns mostly of red and gold, and lots of colourful bottles behind the two were neatly arranged. She sat at one of the stools designated for the customers.
“What time will the acoustic band start?”
“Eight.”
"They haven't arrived yet?"
"No."
Glancing at the watch, the show will start in two hours time. Thinking that it would be better to fill her grumbling tummy with food first, she headed toward the second floor where dinner are being served after thanking the baristas.
After mechanically eating her ordered food, she returned to the bar counter and ordered a non-alcoholic drink. And just like how her afternoon was spent, she drank liquids more than the usual just to kill the slow moving time, the reason why she kept visiting the ladies room more often.
It was almost eight and nature calling again and so she made a quick dash down to the toilet but when she got out, the band had already started. Musical instruments started to play. And so she hurried to get back, only to stop when the voice she had missed so badly started to sing.
Her feet felt like they were being stuck to the ground and she felt weak in her knees. Her heartbeats were trying to outrun each other and she got those dinosaur butterflies in her stomach. And before she knew it, tears were silently gliding down her cheeks. Taking slow steps toward an empty table, her eyes never blinked as she stared at the lovely singer on stage.
As the singer kept singing, Risa kept ordering drinks. But unlike earlier, she’s gulping down alcoholic beverages this time.

“Now I know why I didn’t even get any reaction from you when I was positive you stared back at me.”
Hearing the slurry voice, Ai’s ears twitched and she accidentally dropped a thing that looked like a stick that she was holding. And she slowly detached herself from the guitarist’s embrace. “Risa…”
“I was out there watching while holding my hopes up high that you would smile back but I was wrong. It was all a false hope, a mere wishful thinking. Am I really that easy to forget? Huh Aichan?”
“You’re drunk?”
“No! I’m not! But yes, I had some. Why, you think I’d still stay the same after what, two years?”
“Where’s Eri?” when the bean did not respond Ai turned to her companion “Lin, please hand me my phone.”
“Lin? Linlin? I clearly get it now. You pushed me to Eri because you ran-away with her?!”
“Ano…” Linlin’s try to add her thoughts was cut by Ai’s light squeeze on her wrist. And so she stopped.
“You said you only need to catch your breath. Why didn’t you tell me the truth? You even said you love me but now here you are, embracing someone else. Enjoying someone’s warmth while I was desperately trying to find you.” Risa’s voice wobbled with emotion. She’s hurt. In pain. Very disappointed. And feeling totally defeated.
“Why Aichan?!” Risa screamed as she dropped to her knees on the cold floor of the band’s dressing room. Sobbing like a lost child until alcohol’s power took over, she passed out.

“She’s sleeping at the other room.”
“How are you?”
“I’m fine. Can you take over from here?”
“Yeah.”
“Thank you Eri.”
“How about you?”
“I’m heading home.”

Linlin was holding the singer as they find their way out of the hotel. She’s patting the older from time to time, consoling the silent crying Ai.
“One more step down Aineesan and we’re on the street. Careful, the pavement’s slippery.”

Linlin strummed the strings of her guitar, signaling the start of their last performance of the night. The singer brought her mic up closer to where her heart’s located, preparing herself to sing their last song and her favourite song at the same time since the day she ran-away. She used to close both of her eyes during the finale because only then will she begin to see her again. But lately, things have changed.

Ai did not respond but embraced the girl back instead. Tightening the hug as she released her soundless cries in the four walls of the dressing room, inhaling and exhaling in big gulps of air as her chin trembled even more.
She continued to let her tears out, dampening Linlin’s shirt in the process, until she heard a new but a very familiar voice that made her body lost its sensation for a moment and dropped her held stick on the hard floor with a thud.
Slowly detaching herself from the guitarist, the singer tried her hardest to stop the tears from sliding down. She stood up in a slow motion manner but did not turn around to face the intruder. She only uttered the word she loves dearly and missed to utter since the day she ran-away.
“Risa.”

“Where’s Eri?” no reply was heard and so phoning Eri came into her mind “Lin, please hand me my phone.”
“Lin? Linlin? I clearly get it now. You pushed me to Eri because you ran-away with her?!”
“Ano…” the guitarist started but Ai stopped.
“You said you only need to catch your breath. Why didn’t you tell me the truth? You even said you love me but now here you are, embracing someone else. Enjoying someone’s warmth while I was desperately trying to find you.”
“Why Aichan?!”
Risa’s venting her frustrations and bombarding Ai with questions, but the singer opted not to answer, complicating things is the last thing she wanted at the moment. Hearing the pained voice’s breaking her apart but she could only swallow the pain that was tightening her throat.
“OMG, she collapsed!”

The time when they waited for Eri to arrive, Ai was kneeling down beside the bed where Risa was. She could clearly hear the bean’s breathing and the incoherent murmurs she emitted in her unconscious state from time to time. Her hair smells just like before, strawberry, Ai’s favourite scent.
She’s finally in front of her. Risa’s within her grasp. She longed for this moment for months, to touch her, to smell her, to be beside her. And her heart was screaming to hug her tight but her mind was hard-headedly contradicting. How would she be able to give Risa happiness when she’s now not whole? When she’s now blind? Bringing her hand up to cover her trembling mouth, Ai tried hard to not leak the sound of her cry. And then her phone vibrated inside her pocket.

Feeling the cool air outside the hotel, her heart started to breathe. Trekking the dark road, she wiped her tears away by the back of her hand.
“Some other time and some other place, you’ll see someone better than me Risa.”

“Abe dear, she’s awake.” the man who stood up abruptly from his chair next to the bed informed her dozing wife.
Shaking her head a little, she placed the newspaper from her lap on the side table and rushed toward the bed. “Baby, are you okay?” the woman asked the girl. When the girl only flinched, Abe turned to her husband and requested “Dear, please call someone.”
“Mommy, am I in heaven now?” the girl asked her mother the moment she laid her eyes on her. A smile appeared on her jaded face, delight shone in her dark brown eyes. She seemed happy at the sight in front of her, happy that she’s with her mother again. But she couldn’t help but feel her heart twitch in pain, pain of leaving someone behind.
“You’re in a hospital dear. Is there anything that hurt? The doctor is coming baby, don’t worry.”
“Eh?! Mommy?! You’re alive?!” the girl’s eyes grew wide as she stared at her mother, obviously surprised.
“Of course I’m alive. What are you talking about?” responded her equally surprised mother. “Daddy found you unconscious under a tree. What were you doing in that tree anyway?”
“A tree?” little by little her memory of that event came flashing back. She saw a poor kitten on a tree branch. Couldn’t leave the poor little one, she climbed up to rescue the kitten. The branch broke and then she fell with it.
“How long have I been here?”
“Two days. You’ve been unconscious for two days.”
“Two days?” Bringing her left hand to her chest, she still could feel the pain her heart is feeling. Everything seemed so real. “I was only dreaming? But it felt so real.” Trying to recall her dream, her surrounding turned fuzzy until a flash light brought her back to reality.
“How are you feeling?” someone in a white coat asked her. But the light gave her a hard time seeing the girl’s face clearly.
“Okay, I guess.”
Her doctor put the flashlight off and saw her placed it back on her coat’s pocket. She blinked her eyes several times to adjust and when they were properly adjusted, they almost popped out from their sockets. “You?!”
The doctor jumped a little in surprise, startled at her patient’s behavior. “Yes?”
“It’s you.”
“Have we met before?”
“You’re name is Risa right?”
The doctor smiled and replied “No. My name is S!hu!”
“Oh.”
“We need to do other tests before you can finally go home.”
“Okay. Ummm, would you mind if I ask you a personal question?”
The doctor smiled again “Okay, what is it?”
“Are you single by any chance?”
“Yes, why?’
“Nothing.” And then a smile crept on Ai’s face. Felt relieved and happy at the same time.
“Baby, are you okay?” her confused mother asked.
“Never better.”
“Suimasen. Niigaki S!hu!-san, Eri would like to have a consult when you’re finished.” Another smiling woman in white coat appeared and disappeared in the doorway.
“Your sister’s antics never ceased to amaze me, Niigaki-san.” a nurse with black hair and a snow white’s complexion remarked and giggled as she stared lovingly at the empty doorway.
“And you’re so into her.” a wonky eyed butted in, smirking.
“Ahem.”
“Tsunku, let them be dear.”

The Suppose Ending
After her encounter with Ai a month ago, Risa stopped shedding tears and never cast a word about the encounter or Ai as a whole. She was acting as if nothing had happened and went on with her life. But all people around her could tell that she’s still in pain and her silence about the matter made them all the more worried about her well-being. She’s emotionally shattered, that’s how her friends assessed her but she kept telling them that she may be physically weak but she’s doing okay.
‘Let’s get out of here and take a trip together, you know to unwind.’ That’s how her flatmate asked her and of course she turned down the offer citing she needed it not.
‘It’s not for you but for me.’ countered her friend. Sensing her flatmate’s persistence, Risa surrendered and gave in. Plus the fact that it’s the only thing she could do to pay her friend’s kindness when she left the Takahashi’s house after the encounter, so why stay cold.
And so there she was, in front of a beach house that made her feet glued to the ground for an unknown reason. Her heart never stopped its intense pounding since the moment she saw the place that looked so familiar. She was all eyes and ears all of a sudden. Boredom forgotten and interest kicked in from nowhere. Something deep within her was like being awakened by the sight in front of her. Something that was making her feeling strong but weak at the same time. After a good moment of staring, she followed her companion’s trail and continued eyeing the place.
“Where are we?” she finally asked her friend when they stopped and stood in front of a wooden door. That was her first proper sentence uttered since the moment they boarded on the train, transferred to a bus and walked a few minutes. It’s not that she didn’t talk, in fact she’d let out a few words when needed and nodded from time to time, but it’s just that no conversation that started from her happened during the course.
No answer from her friend was received and only a smile was given to her. With puzzlement, Risa continued to gaze at her, watched as her friend took her phone out from her pocket, pushed some buttons and put the gadget to her ear.
“We are here.”
...
“Okay” clicking the end call button, she faced Risa and smiled again “Let’s get inside.”
The moment she stepped inside, everything turned white and fuzzy, and that’s when it dawned on her why the place looked so familiar.
“Nee Risa-chan, what is your dream house?
“Uhmmm, I’d love to have a beach house. A lake house will do too. A white painted house, with glass walls too so that I’d be able to enjoy the scenery even from the inside. With flowers here and there, spacious garden is a plus. I want it to have lots of lights too, different kinds and creatively displayed because I want the house to be bright when the sun sleeps. Something comfortable.”
“Sounds expensive.”
“Is it? So, what’s your dream house?”
“I’d like a house that has you in it.”
Recollecting the past made Risa’s heart started to be in pain again. Gazing at her very kind friend, she took a deep silent breath and shrugged the pain off. This vacation is for her friend, thus suppressing her emotions is very essential at the moment. She’s been a bother to her friend for long, now’s the time to show some real gratitude toward her.
“Konnichiwa, I’m sorry to keep you waiting. I was at the seashore when I answered your call.”
Risa’s eyes grew wide when the face of the girl that greeted them registered in her mind.
“What are we doing here?! And why is she here?!”
“Gaki-san, you two need to talk.”
“It was already clear to me! So what’s the point of bringing this up again!?”
“There were a few things left unsaid Gaki-san, things that you have to know.”
“I don’t care and I don’t want to know! I have moved on already!”
“No! You haven’t!”
“Do you really like seeing me cry? Huh?”
“No, I don’t. But please just this once.”
“Niigaki-san, we really need to talk.”

The sun was descending, she could feel it. The waves of the sea became louder, making the surrounding even colder. It’s very peaceful despite the water splashing onto the shore. She loves it for it calms her broken soul. She stayed there motionless, enjoying the sensation the wind's giving her. Her head’s faced toward the sea, as if looking at the vast horizon, until her ears twitched when she heard something coming her way and so she moved her head a little to the side.
“Did you forget something?” her vision may not be working but her ears became sensitive as the days went by. She could even hear a leaf falling from a tree. It’s one of the advantages of being blind. Her listening skill became sharp.
The woman in question did not answer, but continued walking gently on the white sandy beach toward where Ai was. When she was already a meter away from the lady who was sitting on a bench with a part of her white dress dancing along with the wind, she paused.
“Lin, what’s wrong?” the girl asked again after she felt someone hugged her from behind.
“I didn’t notice you smell different today, changed your shampoo?” when the person behind her did not say a word that’s when she realized it was not her loving friend. It was someone she so adores. And then time stood still.
No one talk. Both let the silence speak for them. Enjoying each others warmth as the sun slowly retired and the wind continued to blow cold breezes. The girl on Ai’s back tightened the hug and Ai finally let it be. Cheek touching cheek, savoring its softness they both so missed. Hand intertwined with the other, saying that they’ll never be apart again.
“Tadaima.”
“Okaeri.”

A woman standing by the doorway smiled while wiping her tears away. “No matter how I tried, you only belong to her. Goodbye Gaki-han.”
