AKB48′s Maeda Atsuko to graduate from the group

On Sunday, the final day of AKB48’s series of three concerts at Saitama Super Arena, member Maeda Atsuko (20) unexpectedly announced that she plans to graduate from the group. Although the date of her graduation has not been announced, it is expected that she will leave after AKB48′s first concert at Tokyo Dome (the date for that concert has also not been announced).

Maeda has been with the group since it formed in 2005, and to many she has been the “face” of the group for a long time. She was voted #1 by fans in AKB48′s “senbatsu” elections in 2009 and 2011, and she ranked 2nd behind Oshima Yuko in 2010.

Also known by the nickname “Acchan,” she has appeared in several television dramas and movies, including “Moshi Koukou Yakyuu no Joshi Manager ga Drucker no Management wo Yondara” (“Moshidora”), “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e ~ Ikemen Paradise,” and “Q10.” In June 2011, she made her solo CD debut with the single “Flower,” reaching #1 on the weekly sales charts.

More details about her graduation and future plans will be announced at a later date.

Acchan, its been a good 6 yrs since I've first known you, ever since I initially saw you in the group's Seifuku ga Jama wo Suru 4th single PV. I can still remember vividly when I first saw this PV video that I was introduced to another side of you, another side of AKB48 as this was a rather controversial music video to the amasses and you played a key role in the PV and CMs itself shown before my own eyes.

20 years old (Hatachi) is definitely a huge thing for any japanese girl, let alone an internationally well-known idol. I'm sure there are alot more things you would want to accomplish in life from here on, so please continue and do your best, be it in your solo career or any upcoming dramas or movies, I will always be sure to be watching over you from here, supporting you with all my heart dedication despite that you are my only 3rd fav member after Tomochin and Kitarie.

You're definitely one of the most "utsukushii" flower I have ever met in my life-time, thank you Acchan お疲れ様でした!

This girl has my undying respect and love, she gave up most of her youth by helping built up something great, working hard everyday, always thinking of others and never once did she let her smile waver. Thrust into the center spotlight despite being a shy, introvert girl and became one of the most well-know idols of her age but never really did carry the air of a celebrity.

For 6 and a half years she worked hard to achieve a dream and finally it’s coming true and now she’s stepping down from her center position and chasing her own dream and because of that courageous decision, she gave me new-found confidence in myself and I would like to thank her for that.

Acchan got me into AKB in the first place. I can't believe she's leaving. It feels almost surreal.

Regardless, I'll continue to support her, whatever endeavour she might pursue from here on out. She deserves that from us all.

I genuinely believe that AKB wouldn't be what it is today without this amazing girl carrying it on her shoulders. She's a woman now and I'm sure she'll continue to surprise and impress us.

I myself was a former MM fan. We had the losses of Asuka, Nakazawa, Goto, Nacchi, Kaori, Yossie, Aichan, Kamei, & Junjun

I won't call it exactly like Queen losing Freddie, or Nirvana minus Kurt, but it at least feels like the Beatles without Lennon or Paul

I only hope AKB48 doesn't end up like post-grads MM.
