Dakoda Dowd, 12 year old golf phenom gets a sponsor's exemption for a different reason....her mother, suffering from terminal cancer, last wish is to see her play in the LPGA.

Dakoda will tee off in the Ginn Open, against Annika Sorenstam, Christina Kim and the tour's other top women, thanks to an exemption from the tournament's sponsor.

Dowd has a 74 at Orlando

ORLANDO, Ga., April 28 (UPI) -- 13-year-old Dakota Dowd Thursday shot a 2-over-par 74 in the first round of the inaugural Ginn Clubs & Resorts Open Golf Tournament at Orlando.

The emotional Dowd has a sponsor's exemption and is playing for the first time in a professional in the event.

She is fulfilling a wish of her mother, who is terminally ill with cancer and played with LPGA veterans Tracy Hanson and Kate Golden.

"The girls were making me feel at ease," said Dowd, who played the back nine to start he round and carded a birdie at No. 10, her very first hole. "It all was just a great experience."

Dowd is tied for 55th place. The opening round was suspended by darkness.

The first-round leader was Cristie Kerr at 7-under 65.
