Nice rig Shenjin.
So a year ago, I was planning this:
Well, new PC is getting much closer - looks like I'll be getting it in January. I've also had a chance to revise my build with new hardware!
CPU: Intel Core i7 3930K
Mobo: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme (LGA2011)
RAM: 16gb DDR3-1600
Video: GeForce GTX 580 1536mb
SSDs: 2x Corsair Force 3 120gb in RAID 1
Optical: 12x BD-Writer
Case: Silverstone Fortress 2
PSU: Silverstone Strider ST1500 1500W, modular
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Now I've paid off most of my student loans, and I'm able to splurge a bit more responsibly. Slightly different component mix, which should provide more power and a much cheaper price.
CPU: Intel i7 3770K
Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Mobo: Asus Maximus V Formula
RAM: 32gb
Corsair Vengeance Patriot Viper 3 1866mhz
(Found a different brand on sale.)The first big difference is that I'm going LGA1155 instead of LGA2011. LGA2011 works out to be about $300-400 more for the same level parts. Almost nothing currently utilizes the extra 2 cores or needs more than 32gb of RAM. The 3770K has a decent amount of overclocking potential combined with a RoG board. The board has a few extra features that I can use to justify the extra cost: better sound quality, O.C. tools and lots of fan and SATA3 headers. The Noctua cooler is a nice tower part that will provide extremely good air cooling when combined with my other parts. Fast RAM since I'm going to be O.C.ing this thing.
SSD:
256gb Samsung 840 Pro 512gb Crucial m4
(Put some of the money from the cheaper case into a big SSD)HDD: 2x 3TB WD Caviar Green
SSD prices have come down enough to allow me to go a little bigger for a similar price point. The 840 Pro can pretty much saturate a SATA3 channel by itself, so no need to RAID. Later on I might add another SSD for games, but not necessary at this point. The 3TB hard drives I already own from Black Friday. 6TB should be more than adequate, and I can always add more.
Case:
Silverstone Fortress FT02S-W-USB3.0 Antec P280
(Another substitution, the original case would have cost $275, plus another $210 for shipping. The P280 is $100 and ships free.)PSU:
Seasonic Platinum 1000 Corsair HX850
(Substitution as this one should be adequate and came with free shipping, making a $125 difference.)Fan: Noctua NF-P12 1300
Lighting: NZXT Sleeved LED 2m (No window, so lights are kinda unnecessary.)The case is similar - just updated to have USB 3.0 points and I'm going with the Window to show off the glowing motherboard and such. Parts are a bit more efficient than last year, so 1000W is more than adequate with space to spare. My power rates are 6x the national average, so going for 80+ Platinum actually makes sense - should save about $80 a year over a 80+ Bronze. Another quiet Noctua fan to replace the Silverstone exhaust fan in the case - it's quieter and pushes more air. Some lights to illuminate the case and my physical set-up is basically done.
OS: Windows 8 Pro
Optical:
External Samsung DVD-RW Internal LG BluRay Player
(Cheap internal drive since now it matches.)It's faster than Windows 7, functions the same after I add Start8 and gives me DX11.1 support. I couldn't find a DVD drive in silver, so I'm just going to use a $30 external for the once a month it's actually used. Makes my case tidier too.
GPU: EVGA GeForce 690GTX
This is the part I'm having the most debate over. There's a lot of really great GPUs out there right now. The 690 is as good as two 680's in SLI, and I could even SLI it later on if necessary. The included coolers work with my case as well. This is the part most subject to change - if the final cost ends up running too high for my tastes, I may drop this down to a 680 and SLI it later.
Monitor: Dell UltraSharp U2713HM
Speakers: Logitech Z623
2560x1440 and IPS should make a nice upgrade from my current 1080p Viewsonic. My old speakers died after 4 moves and 5 years, so need to replace them anyway.
I'll continue using my existing BlackWidow Ultimate and DeathAdder with the new computer.
Should be ordering in 3 weeks and begin assembly in the second week of January. I'll post lots of pics when that happens.
