^ I tried a 8 disk (8*250GB) once, works nice but then after 2-3 years the first drives start to fail... remember when they run 24*7 drives will fail and the more drives you have the more per year WILL fail meaning after 3 years you have to replace like 3 drives a year at least.

Check for the document Google made about a 5 year study on generic drives, after 3 years all of them start to fail.

I switched to external USB boxes with drives in them, saves on power and means they are only active when I really need them (except for the 2 250GB drives that are 'temp storage' for the files just downloaded and for those I am still wanting to see in a short while).

eh, i already expect drives to fail. the question is whether they fail within a RAID array, or on their own. i have no qualms with purchasing a couple hard drives each year, since im already doing so in a RAID-less config. it's just about getting the data onto a more secure system.

I had the same idea, but remember, after a few years you are only buying *replacement* disks, not extending your storage!

Running drives fail sooner then not running drives.
They still can fail and you should check on them every x, no idea yet what x is, I think 2 years? with my current 26 drives it will take a long time to check them all (3 hours for 250GB).
Using par files and multiple copies of very important files is my current way of doing it.

Lets see. . . .

775 based P4, 3.4 GHz
1 GB RAM
490 GB of disk space
DVD-R/W
Presently using onboard graphics, but it is an Intel 965 chipset, and I only use the machine for downloading and watching things.

478 based P4, 2.4 GHz
1 GB RAM
80 GB HD
DVD-R/W
Some AGP video card that takes 2 slots and works as a space heater.
Used to be my gaming system.

EPIA-EK8000EG based.
512 KB RAM
300 GB HD
DVD-R/W
Everything else is onboard with this thing.  It has a TOTAL power consumption of under 40 watts, and I am migrating to it as a torrent client.

I figure I'll save about $300 a year just in electricity for the machine, and probably more since I won't be heating my room so much (less AC used).

Some old laptop running 98. . . .  A Socket A running a 2400+, but it lost several parts after it started doing random reboots. . . . gads, I see one working and one not working 370 socket machines, and the working one has 1 GB of ram, and is running xbuntu.  Then there is some 478 based machine I ended up with.  I really need to patch that into a KVM and figure out what the heck it is.

I think I have 2 more out in the garage.  Used to me more than that, but I chucked the really old ones a while back.

3 spare AGP video cards. . .  never had time for games after PCI Express came out.  Dang, I still have an external 56k modem on the desk, and who know what pats in boxes in the closet.

I should have a couple more machines soon.  Something in a laptop, and another project box.

yeah it's what I am afraid of ... and one 8800gts (320M) seems enough.
But I didn't really choose my mboard because of the SLI

There's no point in SLI unless you have stupid amounts of money to spend on computer. One high end videocard like 8800GTX is more than enough even with high resolutions and details.

Yes, I agree with that one.

Here is the machine I built for a customer last week:

EVGA nForce680i SLI Motherboard - Socket 775 (122-CK-NF68-AR)
INTEL Core 2 Extreme Quad Core QX6700 2.66GHz Processor - Socket 775 (BX80562QX6700SL9UL)
  (The $1200 CPU)
CORSAIR 2x1GB DDR2 800MHz Memory (TWIN2X2408A-6400)
CORSAIR 2x1GB DDR2 800MHz Memory (TWIN2X2408A-6400)
(Yes, 2 of them, so 4 GB total)
EVGA e-GeForce 8800GTX 768MB PCI-E Video Card (768-P2-N831-AR)
EVGA e-GeForce 8800GTX 768MB PCI-E Video Card (768-P2-N831-AR)
(Yes, 2 of them, so $1200 worth of video cards)
LITEON 16x16 DVD-RW SATA Writer - Black (SH-16A7S06C)
WESTERN DIGITAL 250GB 7200RPM Hard Drive - 16MB SATA2 - OEM (WD2500KS)
LINKSYS 802.11g Wireless G PCI Card - (WMP54G)
COOLER MASTER REAL POWER PRO 850W (RS-850-EMBA)
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 Case - 380W Silver (CAC-T05-UWC)

After Monitor, KB, Mouse, Speakers, a few other odds and ends, and Tax, about a $5800 computer.  Alienware quoted him $7300 for the same rig.

The codes in () are for Manufacturer Model No.

I would user a deeper case next time if given the choice.  While this case is normally very spacious, the EVGA 8800GTX is a VERY long card, and with 2 of them I invaded most of the HD mount space!  Though the cables run very cleanly in this case, especially if you braid and re-route the front panel connectors to go behind the drive cadge.

And just think, in 6 to 8 months they will have games that will be able to use the power of those 8800 cards. . . .

On Intel site there's some weird discussion on the new Quad-core processor.
They say it explodes after 20 hours of extensive work +)

I run into that problem on my computer too with the same case and a 7900GTO. It's not too bad with a SATA drive - but I found trying to fit a IDE drive more trouble than it was worth.

Currently, I'm debating picking up a second 320gb Barracuda.

Seagates are pretty reliable, but more than that they're also quiet.

I can't hear my HDDs over my computers fans (which are damn quiet 120mm's). It's nice since I use it for watching music performances and listening to MP3s a lot.

Gaming laptop is pretty much an oxymoron...

That said: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m2010?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs

For HDD's, I've had a couple Maxtors fail, but only one Seagate.
