Chapter 6: Learning Curve

The judge of a good party at Asa UH is always how and where you end up waking the next morning. Whether or not you counted it as a success to have woken up in bed with your senior resident was entirely up for debate, Reina thought.

Maki was draped across Reina, her head cleaved to the crook of Reina’s neck, one hand clutching the hem of Reina’s shirt. The intern had a confusing surge of both relief and disappointment to find themselves fully-clothed.

There was movement beside the bed and she squeaked as a firm hand clamped over her mouth, preventing further noise. Aya, with a sleepy, but inscrutable look on her face, shushed her and jerked her thumb to indicate the door.

Reina didn’t need to be told twice as she slipped out of her resident’s embrace, rolled off the mattress and landed on all fours like a cat. She made her way to the door much more gracefully than her hungover self should’ve managed and felt vaguely proud of herself. Sneaking a quick glance back, she saw Aya climbing into the spot she’d vacated.

As she closed the door behind her, she noted the nameplate with ‘MATSUURA Aya’ by the door, which cleared things up for Reina, although it didn’t explain why the resident waited until dawn to reclaim her bed.

All in all, not the worst walk of shame Reina’s had, she thought with a smirk.

It had to be absolutely the worst way to wake up, Yossi thought as she tried to extricate herself out of Nakazawa-san’s death grip on her torso. She never got used to the dread and terror she’d have to go through everytime this happened- taking a mental bodypart check to see if she’d been violated the night before.

Despite being half-naked, everything else seemed alright, she thought with a sigh. It was almost impossible to wriggle out without losing a limb in the process, so Yossi just flopped back onto her pillow and decided to wait for her alarm to go off.

“Ohayo,” greeted Rika brightly as she saw her intern wheeling Ai into the cafeteria. “How are you feeling today, Takahashi-san?”

“I feel fine. The swelling seems to have gone down somewhat.”

Rika invited the both of them to sit with her at the senior resident’s table. “It’s okay. The morning after a party, everyone tends to skip breakfast time,” she explained, motioning toward the quiet cafeteria.

“I’m sorry you had to miss the party because of me Dr. Ishikawa.”

“Oh, I didn’t miss it at all. I’m just glad we managed to find you,” Rika said with a smile. “So, are the both of you excited about your first day?”

They started the day right with breakfast, just like the doctor ordered.

Miki led the way to the Administrative offices, nodding a greeting to some admin staff as she passed HR.

The Facilities and Security manager beamed as she saw the both of them. "Ara, what a good senpai you are, Dr Fujimoto. Bringing your kouhai here yourself to get her ID pass."

Miki smirked at Kamei, who had an embarrassed look on her face- being 15 minutes late on the first day of work was not the best way to make an impression. At least Fujimoto-san wasn't as monstrous as they all claimed in the different horror stories Eri had heard.

"G'wan, get your picture taken." Miki said gruffly pushing her forward slightly, and then Eri yelped, eyes wide, as she felt herself fondled and then firmly wedgied. It was too late to do anything about it short of pulling at her underwear in front of the Security guys who were about to take her picture.

“…and 650cc of emesis overnight.” Niigaki finished her perfect 5-minute report with a proud flourish.

Rika was looking down at the neatly-written report on the clipboard, listening intently to Risa the entire time. “What is the patient’s name?” she asked quietly, looking at her intern.

Risa panicked, ready for any number of questions regarding the patient’s stats or the procedures regarding the emesis but not this one. “Um- nandake? Uh…” Her eyes flicked over to the clipboard that Rika was holding close to her chest as she waited for an answer.

“Dr. Niigaki, for future reference, the patient’s name is not ‘43-year-old woman, progressive shortness of breath and chronic blackouts’. It’s Itou Yumi-san, and you would do well to remember that, and every other patient’s name from now on. Take a moment to find out before you enter their room and greet them by name.” Ishikawa’s voice was calm, but firm.

She handed the clipboard over to Risa, “Handle the discharge papers on Satou-san and Kuma-san and then go join Dr. Yoshizawa at the emergency room- you’ll be on her service today.”

Risa stared at her senpai who had entered the patient’s room, shamed and frustrated.

“What do you recommend, Dr. Tanaka?”

Reina confidently replied, “An ECG and full bloodwork to test troponin levels.”

Maki sighed, “Okay, tests are good. But that stethoscope hanging around your neck is not just a fashion accessory, Tanaka.” She gestured for Reina to put it on. Warming the stethoscope briefly between her fingers, she glanced at Reina to make sure her intern was mimicking her. “Medicine isn’t about ordering expensive tests and reading lab reports all the time.”

Smiling at their patient, Maki placed her stethoscope over his chest and closed her eyes in concentration. The sounds came to her clearly, even in the din of the cardiac care ward.

“Okay, now you listen to this.” Maki moved to make way for Reina.

The first-year listened intently, not sure what she was supposed to look out for.

“Can you distinguish individual heart sounds?”

“Yes.”

“Are there any silent intervals?”

Reina paused, eyes shut tight, straining to listen. “Maybe.”

“There are no maybes in medicine, Doctor. Establish the rhythm and tell me where the silent interval occurs.”

The patient, to his credit, didn’t move a single muscle the entire time despite having a cute doctor almost resting her head on his chest.

“I got it! There’s a silent interval between the first heart sound and another before the second.”

Maki raised her eyebrows, secretly impressed. Most people would’ve picked up a single interval between the first and second beats, but not two separate intervals. “Now tell me, if this was an echocardiogram, what will the diagram look like?”

“A crescendo and decrescendo… ah! An ejection murmur!” Reina jumped up excitedly as Maki nodded in the affirmative.

The patient cheered and Reina did a small victory dance.

“Well, Kata-san, maybe you shouldn’t cheer quite so enthusiastically about your condition. We’ll discuss treatment options for you after an ECG.” Maki passed the clipboard over to Reina for the intern to order up the necessary tests.

“Rest well, Kata-san- we’ll see you soon.” Reina waved at her patient with a wink as they exited his room.

“Good job, Dr. Tanaka.”

Reina glowed with the praise. “Senpai, can you call me Reina instead? There are like a dozen Dr. Tanaka’s in this hospital.”

“Okay, Dr. Reina,” Maki nodded. “Ah, ano… Aya-chan told me we invaded her room last night. I hope it doesn’t make things awkward for you-“

“It’s okay, Senpai. I think it helps- with a better working relationship and all that,” Reina replied sincerely.

Maki smiled at her kouhai fondly. This training thing might work out after all.

“This is the wrong one, Kame. I asked for ‘Ebony Trans Love’- go get that one for me.”

The intern looked close to tears as she clutched the glossy magazine, “But… they- they don’t have-“

“I want results, not excuses!!” Miki roared, as Eri shrank back towards the door, “And leave that one here!”

Eri threw the magazine onto the coffee table and all but fled the room.

Yossi picked up the magazine featuring a large-breasted, well-endowed shemale and flipped through it, tilting her head to figure out angles, “Why the hell do you even want these?”

“Maa~ I figure it bothers her.”

“You are so not making Chief Resident.”

“I don’t want to hear that from the person who sent her crippled intern out to deliver lab reports and handle discharges on her first day.”

“At least my intern is learning something on the job, not making visits to the sex shop looking for porn just ‘cause you think it’d bother her.”

Miki sighed into the double-tall strawberry sprinkle mocha-nut mint latte Eri made for her, “What’s the damn point, Yocchan? We all know its going to be one of the wonder two. Or three. Your girlfriend is so passive-aggressive, I can’t even tell if she’s vying for the post at all.”

Yossi ignored the girlfriend crack and smoothly replied, “You’re fast track too, in case you forgot. I know you- you pretend you don’t give a damn, but you’re just as competitive as the best of them.”

“I was on fast-track. I just want to serve my time quietly in general surgery for now.”

“Speaking of which, Nakazawa-san is putting a bug up my ass about us declaring that sub-specialty we keep threatening to do.”

“Whatever. I don’t need no stinking specialty. General surgery is a time-honored, oft-misunderstood and under-appreciated field.”

“Is this because you don’t want to compete with Ayaya?”

“The fuck?” Miki spluttered into her drink, and laughed. “What?”

Yossi frowned, her brow furrowed as she contemplated the mechanics required in the centrefold spread’s position, “How the heck does sh- he- it do that?”

Miki threw a handful of beef jerky at Yossi. “What? What were you saying?”

“You.” Yossi looked up from her examination of the picture to stare Miki right in the eyes. “You’re holding yourself back. Because you don’t want to compete with Aya.”

“What? No way!”

“You know Aya’s really good at what she does. I mean, she’s flying solo now and went straight into her specialty in her first year. Even Maki had to work the rotation trenches with the rest of us before becoming a cardiothoracic superstar. She’s not into the competition at all- not until someone incredibly competitive like Ayaya eggs her on.”

“How does this,” Miki gestured absently with a strip of jerky. “Involve me?”

“What I don’t get is what happened to you- why you sorta lost your drive midway. Something up with you and Aya?”

“Nothing’s wrong! What about you and Rika-chan?”

Eyebrows raised, Yossi regarded Miki with a patient look, “We’re talking about you, not about me. And definitely not about Rika.”

“Stop changing the subject.” Miki muttered, shoving a strip of jerky into her mouth and chewing violently.

Yossi smirked, amused at her friend’s antics, “We should admit you to Kemeko Nuthouse upstairs. Who’s passive-aggressive now?”

“There’s nothing up with me and Aya-chan.”

“Anytime you’re ready to talk, I’m here.”

Miki contemplated that for a while. “Me too.”

Yossi went back to her magazine and mumbled absently, “I wonder what Nakazawa-san will say if I told her I wanted to specialize in gender reassignment surgery?”

Ayaya was having the worst headache.

If the girl wasn’t so goddamn proficient with the procedures, she would’ve banned her intern from observing the surgery altogether. Now, Michishige was staring closely at her every move, making small cutesy sounds from time to time when she was enraptured with something Aya was doing.

“Neuro sponge.” Nurse Saito deftly responded to Aya’s quiet request.

Saito Hitomi was often invited to assist in almost every surgery the young neurosurgeon scrubbed into. The experienced neurosurgical nurse was Aya’s good luck charm of sorts and she looked up to the woman with a lot of respect. Right now, Saito was eyeing Aya with amusement, seeing minute signs of stress, not caused by the simple procedure, but by the new addition to their surgical team.

“Would you like to handle the suction, Dr. Michishige?” Saito asked. Aya’s eyes went wide at that and she glared at her trusty nurse. “Yes, Dr. Matsuura? This is a teaching hospital- isn’t hands-on training part of the curriculum?”

Aya glanced around the table- her team was grinning at her behind their masks. She caught a flash of pink turning away to her left- her anesthesiologist pretended to study something on the screen, whilst snickering quietly.

“Yes, Dr. Ohtani?” Aya glowered at her anesthesiologist.

“Vitals and EEG stable,” Masae choked out.

“Shige-san, name me five suctioning-induced traumas that could occur,” Aya barked.

To Sayu’s credit, she only paused for a second before launching into a clear and concise response to Aya’s question. The nurse nodded approvingly before passing the suction to her. “That’s pretty good, Dr. Michishige. Almost verbatim from the textbook.”

“Mochiron!” Sayu smiled cutely. If Aya’s hands weren’t already occupied with the patient’s brain, she would’ve reached up to smack her intern.

“Yoshizawa-san?” Ai wheeled herself into the break room, nervously glancing at her resident and her choice of reading material.

Yossi tossed the porn magazine she was perusing at a dozing Miki and stood. “All done delivering lab reports?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Solid work- let’s go find trouble at the pit.”

They exited the break room and into an empty corridor, Yossi pushing Ai down towards the emergency room, “Your friend is supposed to join us today- Gaki- Gaki-san, was it?”

“Niigaki-san.”

“That’s what I said. Here we are.” The automatic doors swung open into utter chaos, and the Takahashi gaped as a patient was wheeled past them with a barbeque skewer sticking out of his arm.

Yossi smiled, “Ahh- it’s almost summer. Never complete without barbeque-related injuries.” She sidled up to the nurses station and nodded a greeting at Nurse Shinoda. “Could you please page Dr. Gaki-san here?”

The resident and intern leaned against the counter, watching the busy floor as Risa was paged. A not entirely unpleasant odor wafted through the ward and Yossi froze, recognizing it immediately. “Takahashi-kun, have you-“

Tsuji flew past them, a broad maniacal grin from ear to ear, “Ahhh~ it’s the smell of summer!” She was cradling an armfull of gel tubes and dressing, running as quickly as she could without dropping anything.

“Come on, Takahashi.” Yossie gestured, pulling surgical masks and latex gloves from the dispenser and handing a set to Ai. “Let’s meet your first burn trauma. Breathe through your mouth.” She left word at the reception to send Risa over when the intern responded to the page.

Someone in the Cafeteria had a nasty sense of humor.    

Ai and Risa poked at their coleslaw whilst their table mates enjoyed the special barbeque and grilled meat for dinner that day. Reina was particularly overjoyed at the menu and was chomping enthusiastically at a charred rib slathered with tomato sauce, to Risa’s disgust.

As part of their almost daily custom to recap the day’s events around the dinner table, Sayu was excitedly recounting a play-by-play description of the surgical procedure she'd observed. By the fifth mention of 'intracerebral' and 'hemorrhage', most of her tablemates had tuned off the jabber.

“How about you, Eri?” Risa asked. “Was Dr. Fujimoto alright? I mean, we keep hearing crazy stories about her.”

“It was- interesting,” was all she had to say, smiling weakly at her friends. She turned to her food and started eating slowly.

“And then Nurse Saitou-san said I had a steady grip," Sayu continued, undeterred by the lack of attention.

“Mou, Sayumi. It’s rude to go on and on about it when you know we all haven’t even been in to the surgical room,” Risa complained. Sayumi tilted her head cutely in some form of apology.

“After today, I will never have barbeque for the rest of my life,” Ai said with a shudder.

Risa nodded empathically, “Me neither.”

“I woke up in Dr. Matsuura's bed with Gottsuan in my arms.” Everyone turned to stare at Reina, except Eri, who seemed lost in her own world. “We didn’t sleep- we didn’t have sex. It was just sleep,” she explained.

“I bought a double-ended dildo today,” Eri said absently, staring at her steak. “You can have it, Reina.”

She pulled out an unmarked paper bag and placed it on the table. Risa shrank away from it, as though something would jump out of the bag to attack her.

“Kameha, why the heck did you buy that?”

Eri blinked, “The guy at the shop gave me a discount. It seemed like a good idea at that time.” Ai wheeled herself a little closer to the bag and reached inside, pulling out the pink silicon toy.

“What- they didn’t have it in purple?” Reina asked.

“I’ll get it exchanged for you tomorrow.”

Just as I imagined. Miki and Eri are absolutely AMAZING! It's just like...my god, i have no words. You depicted them EXACTLY as I thought. Perfect! Hands down my favorite combination. Sayu and Aya are a close 2nd, because lord knows we need more comedic relief in medicine AHAH

You were RIGHT ON with surgery in the summer. A lot of incoming surgeons LOVE the winter/summer seasons. Accidents are abundant and it gives em a lot to do ahah always busy and they love the adrenaline rush xD

Totally laughed when Reina and Eri just went out with their confessions HA! Brilliant. That's how you spice up a boring convo xD I absolutely cannot wait for more!

p.s. i voted for Miki and Maki.. ^^ Miki because it seems that she is the least expected to be the Chief Resident.. i always cheer for the underdog.. and Maki.. well, just because..  i really don't have any particular reason why..

So I tried to think about it at 5AM this morning and i dont mind sharing it with others haha I decided that for some reason, I can't see Rika getting it =X Which led me to believe Yossi won't get it, for whatever reason LOL My thought process this early in the morning is nonexistent xD I think that those two will be a little more preoccupied in reviewing anatomy and physiology or something HO HO HO

Poor Eri, seems as though Miki is bothered by having to watch her after all  Seems as though perhaps Miki's attitude has something to do with Aya, were they rivals, lovers or perhaps both in the past and does it explaing Miki's attitude a the moment.

Poor Aya having to deal with a very, um, attentive Sayu  I think it was lucky she was holding that brain!

Hmm perhaps Maki and Reina are kindred spirits after all, seems as though Reina has all ready got a bit of a soft spot for Maki and Maki it seems is impressed by Reina's skill in detecting heart irregularities and perhpas she is also quite intrested in Reina.

Hmm, So Gaki seems to be a very good doctor, but a very good person on the ward?.... Seems as though Rika may of spotted this though, as she did with that paitent and scolded Gaki appropiatley.

Yossie is proper get up and go isn't she, she's one to get stuck in and it seems as though she expects Ai to do the same and anyone else who's in her care (Gaki in this case)

But awww, isn't it wonderful?  Look at how many people are totally hooked on this fic! That alone makes me happy. But updates make me happier and this one an amazing one. I read it late at night, yesterday, and this morning when I woke up, my family asked me "What the hell where you doing last night at God knows what hour laughing like a maniac?" 

I'll have to admit I didn't expect Reina to wake up all tangled up with Maki, at least, not yet.  But I approve, I approve, I toootally approve it! I even squealed! So YAY, nice job there, little kitty Now you only have to become Maki's new jog partner and develop an interesting relationship who will made me suffer less when I think about how IshiYoshi was screwed up[/drama off].  Nah, seriously talking now. I want to know if this is going anywhere or it is just beginner's luck  Lovely anyway, I'll fangirl it as long it lasts. And I love how sleepy Ayaya appears and kicks her out. Rivals sleeping together is always adorable (even if I have the feeling Aya didn't give a damn for who was sleeping also in her bed once she had space to sleep there herself). And I was talking with Bee about this the other day, the fact that with all that Aya/Maki rivalry going on I kinda wanted to see those two together for a little while... Ahh, but definitely Aya/Miki and Maki/Reina comes first in my priorities

This, this was the first thing that made me laugh like mad  Sooo much win! My poor little Yossie, I'm sure she would have liked better to wake up with Rika. But if there is one person I allow to wake up like this with Yossie (aside from Rika-chan, of course), is Nakazawa. She has the right of waking up wherever she wants and with whoever she wants. Always. And in the end no one was violated, right? So there, there, Yossie, it wasn't that bad. Maybe next time you'll be luckier...? 

And there is, Ai-chan in her wheelchair, with Gaki...  TakaGaki, even if is just appearing together in the nearly empty cafeteria, is niiice I know, I fangirl those two too much. And have ever Rika been late at anything in that hospital? She always is the first to be there, perfectly prepared and composed for whatever she has to do. That's our Charmy <3
ERI ID PASS!  Oh, boy I love this.  The beggining of the hell for Eri.  And the worse was yet to come. I pity her, really, but  is just too funny to read those kind  of scenes.  Awesome duo, those two. I hope Eri can defend herself from all this, eventually. But for now, I like better like this. Sorry Eri 
I love those little things like Rika / Risa interaction, by the way. Charmy teaching the proper way to be a nice doctor is wub <3 Not everything are numbers and data, remember that Gaki-san. I'm feeling like a bad person again, but I like when they are left frustrated like this in the beggining. I like frustrated Gaki and frustrated Ai the best... I'll wait patiently to see a frustrated Ai then <3 
I already said up there but... Maki/Reina Do want! Impressed Maki calling Reina for her name is a good sign. You are making me want those together badly, so don't screw it up later! You're evil like that, I know. And I guess it isn't too difficult to find (it was like the first entry or so on google), but in case someone is interested but too lazy to search, I found this ejection murmur quite interesting. It has soouunnnd <3 Really, you even make me want to do some research grac. And I'm a lazy person for things like that. So yay for you. Now if you can make me equally interested in my exams... lol
The next part is probably one of the best in the whole chapter  Eri/Miki moments are automatically epic win. Poor Eri is going to become a regular at that sex shop at this rate. And what about that double-tall strawberry sprinkle mocha-nut mint latte? Really all those trans magazines during the whole scene where hilarous too. But oh-oh, what we have here, is not only hilarity. We have important information to speculate about! *inserts dun dun duuun music*

“Is this because you don’t want to compete with Ayaya?”

“The fuck?” Miki spluttered into her drink, and laughed. “What?”

Bullseye, Mikitty? You can laugh all you want, but we know that was a pretty close one, at least! Really, this raised so many questions... what happened between those two? There are more problems than I imagined at first. The drama unfolds slowly, and I looove it All that "What's with Aya and you" and "So what's with Rika and you then?" is awesome too. I love their interaction <3  And passive-agressive Mikitty rocks too! For some reason I know it's going to be Eri to pay later for Miki passive-agressive mood  So yeah, I want to know what happened. Tell us about it soon, please? 
And talking about Ayaya.... poor her, with the nurses having fun at her cost that way. And Boss! She's here! Along with Masae! Bossssss  Maasaeee    Both of them being amazing  And Sayu, of course. She's so cute, so excited with the surgery <3

Wonderful . No matter how many times I read it, I laugh. I guess I just love too much for my own good Aya getting annoyed by Sayu. Even she is all squeaky, she is very hardworking too. That made her even more annoying to her senpai sometimes I guess 
The explanation of the summer chaos was so nice to read, specially to see Tsuji running around all excited like a little child on Christmas day. That another image that would be awesome to draw. Aah, what a nice, lively hospital we have here.
And the last part, with the happy meal in the cafeteria   Attention whore Sayu, middle traumatized by food Ai and Risa, very traumatized Eri and Reina just announcing "Hey people, I woke up with Gottsuan today! Jealous?". That what I call a succesful first day for all of them  I bet Eri was just buying extra stuff to avoid another trip to the shop. Or maybe she doesn't mind anymore, being all morning there. How many things she had to bought anyway? Evil Mikitty is evil. And Risa reaction to the dildo-bag was hilarous too. And Ai sure looked interested enough in it.  Gosh, I couldn't stop laughing the whole scene

maybe Sayu could steal it before Eri makes the exchange. then Reina could fight her for it in a 'who comes first' fic. I meant a footrace, not a perv

Okay, I died only imagining that. How much more awesome can this fic be?

I voted Maki and Aya for chief resident, as the natural tension between the two characters can create interesting story lines. Yossie and Charmy always have an interesting story line, so no need for them to take the chief resident spot.............

Okay, so finally making my post here. Well, I'm sure throughout our various crazy fangirling sessions, I've managed to get across to you in one way or another how I feel about this certain fic   

On Call... daisuki! 

I actually hadn't started reading this until a few days after you posted the thread (on my birthday too! It was like an indirect birthday gift for me XDDD). When I clicked on the thread and came across the mother of all comments, I was like...  must read must read must read NOW! And I did. Eventually (after I got over Ai-chan-is-going-to-graduate-depression). And I love it, to pieces. And I've been fangirling it to (and with!) ropychan all the time since. 

Why On Call is awesome:

1) grac writes it
2) grac writes it
3) Huge cast, OGs, my OTPs!!!! = IshiYoshi, TakaGaki, hints of KameShige and of course, the MIKIERI THAT I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF. 
4) grac writes it
5) MEDICAL DRAMA/CRACK FILLED WITH THE CUTEST BUNCH OF DOCTORS ON THE PLANET. And it's already epic. 'Nuff said.

Yup, this fic will be the fic I go to to use up all my fangirling energy; ropychan is already my fangirling partner for this, and with the fangirling marathons we've already had with you, grac, I am ALL THE MORE EXCITED about this. In typical Bee fashion, I'm always keeping a mental grasp on all the pairings and relationships. These are a BIG thing for me. Quick summary of what I think...

I've made myself pretty clear about how I feel about this pairing. I know that... the two of them are on a bit of a hiatus from each other... but I won't go into too much here. Besides, I think ropychan speaks for us all when she says:

There hasn't been enough interaction between them just yet (I have a feeling they wouldn't be able to provide as much crack potential  ), but they would be so so awesome for the slower, sweeter scenes.  and just to contrast personalities like Miki and Eri 
They have shown that they are very close and that they think very highly of each other (during the scenes of  sewing up Ai-chan).
In a relationship yet? I'm not quite sure, but definitely close.
I'm looking forward to see what predicaments you'll be landing these two in ^_________^

You asked before if we thought these two were in a relationship, but I think no. I still think no. Not in a relationship, but I have this niggling feeling that Miki secretly harbours feelings for Ayaya... I've always gotten that sense when I think about the two together.
With that latest scene when Yossie was questioning what was going on between Aya and Miki, I'd thought at first she was simply referring to the competition between the two. But now that I'm reading it again... ??? Was Yossie delving into a lot more here?  Hmmmm....

For now though, GAM can be neatly summarised with:

“I can’t believe that you,” Aya smacked Miki on the arm “Bet.” Smack. “Against.” Smack. “Me!” Smack. “And purposely delayed me just to win.” Smack. “We were supposed to go together!”

Reina idolises Maki, Maki is single and hot, MakiReina don't mind waking up in each others' arms after a drunken night, will love bloom here?
Their little moment together in the latest chapter was a pretty fun read though.

I wonder if and how these two will progress along with the story... I have a feeling they will be able to learn plenty from each other, and Ayaya will end up feeling a soft spot for Sayu. I'm sure there's much more to the bunny than her cuteyness.

Chapter 1: Morning Rush:

An intriguing start... you can tell already from this short snippet that this is going to be one crazy busy hospital...  Already, such a sense of competition and subsequent mayhem... wasn't exactly sure what was happening (just a general sense of madness), but it all falls together in the end. 

Rampant swearing from irate Masae, and Ayaya, very nice touches  (can't get over the gif ropychan made you... and the shock of finding out what an awesome drawer she is <3).
I also really enjoyed the little details of demon Aya bike-pedalling-jamming-and-skidding-sideways, the trouble pair and their camcorder.. and of course::::

The first thing the frazzled duo noticed when they managed to squeeze in through the doorway at the same time, two abreast, was Ishikawa Rika on the couch, sipping on a cup of whatever like the goddamn queen of England, not a hair out of place. She eyed them with amusement and shrugged delicately.

My Charmy! 
She's not just the goddamn queen of England, she's the goddamn queen of the world!!!!! I mean, just look at the other two scuffling to get there, and she's already there, all laid-back and sipping on a cup of whatever. Charmy rules. 

Anyways, great way to set up the story, grac 

And upon discovering at the end there that it's THE NAKAZAWA who's chief, I rejoiced.

Chapter 2: Morning After:

I like the way you reveal a little bit more about the story and characters with every new chapter... I mean, it's something all of us fanfic writers should do, but a lot of us probably don't do it well enough xD

And the fact that you reveal these things through action and dialogue, rather than simply recounting or telling things - that's something I noticed right away. And something I should do well to learn from, in fact 

Staff cafeteria... 

This is the place I'm betting will house many awesome, cracktastic events to come... it's where all the girls gather, so it's got to be. Or maybe I should take a hint and look forward to the on call room crack  Yes, I had to search up what 'on call' in relation to hospitals meant. Thank you for the learning inspiration. xD I'm sure I'll be picking up on a few terms here and there throughout this reading 

“And, repaying my study loan is infinitely more important than loyalty."

 
Last time I heard, it was Ayaya who was the lesser of the friends... lol. But okay, selfish Mikitty will be an delightful one to watch. 

“Who’d get to read the announcement first. As though rushing to read it first changes the name on the notice.” Rika explained, with a disdainful sniff.

Gosh, I can't even begin to imagine the chaos that 1st-2nd gen Momusu brought to the hospital...

I reckon you ought to give us more flashbacks like that. Would be fun to see how some of the traditions have come to be

“Hmnh?” Kago looked up from her breakfast burrito, dropping bits of masticated meat and dough onto the table.

Awesome, Nakazawa threatening them all like that, it’s so funny

If only you'd given us the option of choosing Kago for Chief Resident! I would've picked her in a heart beat!

Well… I’d really like to think it’s because Rika loves kids (which is true, anyhow), and not because she feels she can’t shine with Ayaya next to her. +_____+

Maybe they can have a showdown Sukeban Deka style. 


Chapter 3: In the Pits:

Her eighth patient for the day was another hayfever-triggered asthma attack- Spring was winding down too slowly and the monotony of mild respiratory-related issues were eating at the adrenaline-driven surgeon. Winter was definitely her favorite season- icy roads, broken bones, ruptured spleens- Santa-san really came through last Christmas with that ten-car pileup, Tsuji recalled fondly.

I'm tempted to believe this is the result of a grac!cracked character, but it's true, right? Doctors enjoying the extreme seasons for the singular fact that they can get their hands busy 

“Oh look, it says if we have something to do that they can’t tag along to, we can place them under the care of another senior resident.”

“Just for the record, Miki,” Maki said preemptively. “You’re not palming off your intern to me.”

The lot of them know Miki all too well, hey?

Miki. Can you be any more subtle? It’s giving me a tumour…

“Aw, look at the two of you, the old married couple divvying up household chores and babysitting duty.”

ISHIYOSHI! 

But even though Miki knows (or is it she doesn't???) they're on break from each other, she's still pestering them like that? xD

“Ooh- yes! I say 3 days. Either Miki bails out or her intern does.”

“Aya-chan!”

“Come on, you guys. Stop picking on Miki-chan.” Rika piped up. “Give her two weeks, at least.” Yossi burst out laughing uproariously at that and high-fived Rika.

They really don't have faith in Miki, do they? 
You should have them pick on Miki more often, just so it balances out with Miki picking on Eri 

It's always a joy to read these kinds of scenes!

“That the only way you’re leaving the surgical program was if you died of a horrible dismemberment. Simply dying wouldn’t work because she’d just resusticate you. She said, and I quote this verbatim: ‘Godhand Nakazawa has never lost a coding patient.’”

Nakazawa Yuko quotes are just epic, time and time again.

And grac’s fics always compel me to go do research. I didn’t know what ‘coding’ patient meant… now I do. *Bee is happy to always be learning more English*

“Pediatrics is- I mean, isn’t it infinitely more challenging and rewarding all at once? To be able to treat and cure young lives with so much more ahead of them,” the young resident enthused passionately.

I vote to see Tsunku-san drop in sometime! Make him an almighty figure or a rolled-in comatose patient, do whatever you will with him. The crack levels can only increase with his appearance xD

Chapter 4: Natsu Party

The chapter when GoRokkies appear! *Bee dances* 

I would've been happy just knowing that this fic would feature the whole OG cast; but after discovering that they would be paired up with GoRokkies, I was completely STOKED! 

The whole Morning Musume house under one hospital roof. The idea just gets me so worked up!!!!!!!!

We all know what Yossie thinks about marriage…

I’m hoping for some Yuko/Eri scenes – they’re such a fun combination to watch. 


And wow... Maki and Ayaya shameless much? This is why, I'd prefer everything just to fall under Miki's control 


Funny how Ayaya couldn't get her desired intern and got Sayu instead. xD I think it might be called karma.





Chapter 5: Everybody's got somebody, except Yossi

OGs meet their GoRokkies partners!!!! 



You know, at first, I was nodding furiously with ropychan's predictions. But now knowing who's paired up with who, I just can't think of better combinations 

“Un.” Miki studied her intern, like she would a bug on a specimen dish. Eri gripped her glass with both hands and sipped at it, squirming under Miki’s gaze.

Eri is really beyond help. She can only pray to see the sunlight, and perhaps find the positivity and sunshine in her and her circumstances the way grac is easily able to do. <3

All I can do is wish her the best of… wedgies.

“It needed some watering down, I thought.” Nakazawa explained.

“You realize watering down the fruit punch doesn’t mean adding more vodka?”

Popping a can of peaches open, the Chief poured its entire contents into the bowl. “There. I fixed it.”

Yuuuuukooo…

   

She’s just got a way about things that makes her so charming, hey? ^___^

“Yeah. You were throwing your phone against the wall repeatedly, yelling ‘this is durable as shit’.” Aibon teased with a snicker.

OH MY GAH. I love you using references like that. Goddamit, has me cracking up every time!!!

It was kind of awkward- they haven’t really been left alone together since the break-up… short break, Yossi corrected herself internally. Things had been incredibly amiable, they still had a great working relationship in and out of the hospital. Truth be told, they were doing the exact same things they were doing, months before the official ‘break’.

 

You WILL describe to us what happened, right? In detail? A lot of it?

Or do you think you already managed that with the mention of Lesbian Bed Death?   =_________=

I am really, really, really hoping that IshiYoshi get back together. It's kind of unnerving to read through all this knowing that they're not... together. 

Because this:  always needs to be accompanied by this:

But I guess... the following scene more than made up for it. So sweeeet! TakaGaki, especially, but IshiYoshi too have proved to be such lovely, caring seniors. I can't imagine what Miki would do in such a situation... (or am I being too harsh on Mikitty?  ). Yah... Gaki-san being too nervous to work on Ai is so cute    And Ai-chan jumping to her friend's defense to ensure the seniors have a good impression of her is even cuter

In the wake of all that excitement, Yossi debated against going back to the party, but Rika was quite adamant about joining their colleagues. ‘To get blackmail material, if nothing else’, she reasoned.

 

Blackmail material, niiiiiiiice... 

And that only works if you don't get piss drunk and forget everything. Poor Yossie. Why does it happen to her? Why not Rika? xD

Chapter 6: Learning Curve

My favourite chapter so far... when all the learning and relationships start

Whoa... how'd they end up there in Ayaya's room and where was Ayaya all night? 
Are we ever going to have some nice rewind-let's-see-what-happened-a-la-The-Hangover scenes? Maybe on the terror twin's camcorder :3 (Miki will enjoy that muchly xD)

Since Reina and Maki don't really have any other prospective partners on the horizon, I'm okay with them getting together. Reina already showing signs she doesn't mind being with her sempai 

All in all, not the worst walk of shame Reina’s had, she thought with a smirk.

It had to be absolutely the worst way to wake up, Yossi thought as she tried to extricate herself out of Nakazawa-san’s death grip on her torso.

 

Poor Yossie... it's always 'Poor Yossie'... that must be SO utterly terrifying, to wake up in a Nakazawa death grip.

Here Yossie has to lay still and wait for the alarm in Yuko death grip... whilst I remember the IshiYoshi ficlet of yours where Yossie had to lay still in the presence of a snoring Rika. The latter is so much cuter.  Lol.

Rika invited the both of them to sit with her at the senior resident’s table. “It’s okay. The morning after a party, everyone tends to skip breakfast time,” she explained, motioning toward the quiet cafeteria.

Doesn't Rika drink?  or is it that her alcohol tolerance is godly? ... I'm just kinda curious.. everybody else is waking up all over the place, Rika is such a picture of calm whenever we see her. A tad creepy, actually 

I've always wondered about a drunk!Charmy; we've heard about her before in some recounts. She sounds epic, and would love to see that one day <333

and then Eri yelped, eyes wide, as she felt herself fondled and then firmly wedgied. It was too late to do anything about it short of pulling at her underwear in front of the Security guys.

Too funny… Eri didn’t even have the mind to pull it out in her own privacy, she was that shocked

“Dr. Niigaki, for future reference, the patient’s name is not ‘43-year-old woman, progressive shortness of breath and chronic blackouts’. It’s Itou Yumi-san, and you would do well to remember that, and every other patient’s name from now on. Take a moment to find out before you enter their room and greet them by name.” Ishikawa’s voice was calm, but firm.

Awwwww… that’s the awesome Charmy sempai that we all know and love. maybe a little harsh, considering it’s the few first days and all, but at least we know the assertiveness will drive Gaki-san to do better. The bean will most definitely come to admire and appreciate her senior, no doubt about it. <3

Yossi picked up the magazine featuring a large-breasted, well-endowed shemale and flipped through it, tilting her head to figure out angles, “Why the hell do you even want these?”

“Maa. I figure it bothers her.”

Really, as much as I'm rooting for IshiYoshi, TakaGaki and KameShige, it's really all happening here. I CANNOT WAIT TO READ MORE OF MIKIERI. 

Btw, why is Miki so evil?  Deep down, I do have hope that she is like grac, that she is a caring kind of evil and this will eventually come to everybody's attention, especially Eri. I'm... I'm really okay if these two get together. I've secretly fangirled this rather obscure pairing since a long time ago... there's something really cute and charming about them :3

That Fujimoto is really shameless about taking advantage of the intern, isn't she? I wonder if Eri will at one point come out of her stupor and holler for some help. Maybe Nakazawa will take a liking towards Eri... I can see that! Eri had her with the tentative phone lick! 

Also, Miki still refers to Rika as Yossie's 'girlfriend.' She called them an old married couple the other time too. Really makes me wonder; they took a break without letting anybody know? Nande? 'Coz they're really thinking of getting back together, right?

Conflict alert... what really IS going on between the two anyway? MUST FIND OUT! 

“You know Aya’s really good at what she does. I mean, she’s flying solo now and went straight into her specialty in her first year. Even Maki had to work the rotation trenches with the rest of us before becoming a cardiothoracic superstar. She’s not into the competition at all- not until someone incredibly competitive like Ayaya eggs her on.”

Nice parallels here with real-life H!P. Good stuff. 

And again, I have to admire the way you reveal things through dialogue; not only does this move the story on whilst giving us important information, but we learn more about the characters and their relationships all the while. You do this SOOOO well. *Bee takes notes*

Yossie + Miki talks are always entertaining/thoughtful to read; I guess Yossie's just somebody Miki can get along with well and can't make too much fun of, hey? They're kind of on the same wavelength, and Miki sees and respects that. I haven't noticed, but I'm wondering if the Miki here likes to make fun of Rika?  That would be fun to see... 

Now, Michishige was staring closely at her every move, making small cutesy sounds from time to time when she was enraptured with something Aya was doing.

 

That is so easy to imagine!!! This whole scene was really fun to read; Ayaya just barely able to stand Sayu and her extremely cute genius  hahahaa... these two are going to be a riot, second to MikiEri of course. 

If Aya’s hands weren’t occupied with the patient’s brain, she would’ve reached up to smack her intern.

Tsuji flew past them, a broad maniacal grin from ear to ear, “Ahhh~ it’s the smell of summer!” She was cradling an armfull of gel tubes and dressing, running as quickly as she could without dropping anything.

You write up the awesomest images, grac, complete with the awesomest details. This one was love.

“And then Nurse Saitou-san said I had a steady grip," Sayu continued, undeterred by the lack of attention.

GOSH, Sayu.  This is where Gaki-san will be calling her the 'bigger ball-hog.'

“I bought a double-ended dildo today,” Eri said absently, staring at her steak. “You can have it, Reina.”

Wut? 

Eri is SO random. This was so random. I just couldn't believe how random this was, yet it just worked so wonderfully 

The fact that Eri bought that of her own accord is even more ZOMGOSHHHHH. This turtle...  I can only imagine her absent-mindedness becoming worse the more Miki picks on her... I'm horrified for Eri but at the same time, just can't wait to see what other stuff she's gonna be subject to

This comment should be tabbed as the Cliffs Notes version so far. you got it all so very organized with pairings, then individual chapters.

Notes:
- Bee thinks Takagaki may be hard to crack. This sounds like a challenge to me.
- GAM is  , but I'm guessing that they will not hesitate to stab each other lovingly in the back for profit or a laugh. Is what i think.
- What's great about AyaSayu is that there really is no real-life precedent of any prolonged interaction. We'll just have to put their characters together in fiction and see what it results in. A little like chemistry.
- Sayaka may have transferred, following the completion of her residency. But may make a guest appearance. Doctors move around the hospital circuit all the time.
- Miki teasing Ishiyoshi: Fujumoto Miki-sama knows everything- how she chooses to deal with the information is her prerogative. I'm quite sure Miki and Yossi talk, it's just that miki doesn't GAF about social niceties.
- You noticed my omiai line! I loved it too.
- Consider this: if evil Reina wasn't evil, you wouldn't have been able to see Eri sucking salsa out of her phone's receiver. I like evil/drunk Reina- she is best friends with evil/drunk Yaguchi.
- "nice rewind-let's-see-what-happened-a-la-The-Hangover scenes"- maybe omakes?

Chapter 7: Summer Loving

“It’s summer, noon and we’re off-shift. What the hell are we doing freezing our asses off in the morgue?”

“Just ‘cause these are John Does don’t mean they can’t be prettied up.”

“Well, I don’t know about you guys but I’m wearing a bikini under my scrubs.”

Reina and Sayu turned to look at Eri, who was making tiny, neat sutures to close the gaping slash on the neck of her cadaver.

“Are you serious?” Reina pulled her surgical gloves off with a snap and moved towards Eri. “Lemme see.”

“Don’t you dare undress me without scrubbing first,” Eri warned.

Sayu was bent over her own cadaver, a hit-and-run victim, “Why are you wearing a bikini, Eririn?”

“I missed laundry day twice and I don’t have clean underwear. Gaki-san used to do the laundry when we were roomed together. Having a single sucks.”

“I love my single,” The first thing Sayumi did when she moved in to her private qurters was to repaint the room pink. “Not needing to share a room and laundry days with Okada-san has done wonders for my sanity and boob confidence.”

Reina sighed, “That’s all the patience I have for suture practice today. I’m gonna go upstairs and check the board- maybe there’s something interesting Gottsuan’ll ask Reina to scrub into.”

“You’re so lucky.” Sayu lamented, “   Nowadays, Dr. Matsuura doesn’t even allow me to scrub in unless I’ve recited to her every procedure in the book relating to the surgery. And she actually threw me out of the OT once because of my pink usa-chan scrub cap. I think she’s just jealous ‘cause I’m cuter than she is.”

“That’s nothing,” Eri mumbled, “I’m Fujimoto-san’s personal assistant, read: sexually-harrassed indentured slave- all I do is get her coffee, meat and porn, in that order. Plus, she wedgies me after I’m scrubbed in so I can’t so anything about it until after the surgery.”

“You guys, it’s depressing enough being down here. I don’t need to hear your sob stories on top of that.” Reina slid the drawer close and sterilized her instruments. “I’m going. See you at dinner, maybe.”

“Bye, Reina. I hope you scrub into something good.” Eri waved at Reina as she exited the morgue.

“I’m done here too, Eririn.”

“Please don’t leave me here alone.”

 “This isn’t an obake yashiki- you don’t have anything to worry about,” Sayu laughed lightly as she turned off the light above her workstation.

Eri whimpered dismally, hands less steady, as she shakily pulled the ragged edges of fragile tissue close. “Sayuuu~!”

Her friend giggled and leaned against her, “Uso datta, Eririn. I’ll help you finish up.”

The two girls worked together in comfortable silence, lit by the lone hanging lamp that threw long shadows which melded into each other across the checkered morgue floor.

A giggle woke Kaori and she fought to regain conciousness. Paper? Running her hands up her torso she felt small pieces of paper covering every inch of her body from the neck down. She reached up to peel a post-it from her forehead, which was obscuring her vision. Through sleep-blurred eyes, she squinted to read the note:

“You looked cold, so we decided to make you a blanket out of sticky notes. Chuus, nono to aibon.”

Sitting up on the on call room couch, she stretched and pieces of yellow sticky notes detatched from her body, fluttering onto the floor. As she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, she picked up a post-it with a heart drawn on it and smiled.

She made a mental note to speak with Nacchi regarding her wayward new attending’s workload. Tsuji was assigned to Yaguchi, so she knew the girl was whipped and worked over hard by the Tiny Terror of the Trauma Unit. God knows where the two girls found the time and energy to be doing all the shit they pull around the hospital.

She passed the whiteboard in the emergency ward hallway and noted that Yaguchi wasn’t the surgeon on duty. Studying the busy, but organized activity in the emergency room, she observed as Yossi calmly directed her noticably tense intern to increase the pressure on a bleeder’s wound.

Kaori found Yaguchi bent over some paperwork in her office, earphones as huge as her head over her ears, head-bopping away to some music which appeared to have a catchy rhythm. She picked up another ballpoint pen and started energetically tapping out the climax, eyes closed tight.

“Yeah!” She yipped and shook her head from side to side, caught up in her listening.

“Yaguchi,” the Chief of Surgery called from behind her. “Oi, Yaguri!” Stepping into the room, she knocked the headphones off the tiny attending’s head. The sound of heartbeats filtered tinnily through the earpieces.

“Yah! You scared me, Kaorin!”

“Nandeyanen?” Iida gestured towards the muted heart sounds.

“It’s good practice for cardiac cases,” Yaguchi smiled happily, still bopping away vaguely.

“Ah, yes. It's good to learn all the different sounds by heart.”

“Tch. What is it with these puns? Some quota you have to fill?”

Kaorin just looked pleased with herself, “Mm. Anyway, I need to talk to you about Nono.”

A more serious look crossed Yaguchi’s face, “What’s that monster done now? Was it last week’s party? I told her to remove every last bit of dried squid from the laundry room dryers. “

“No, it’s not that. But she didn’t do that good of a job, by the way. I keep passing people in the hallway and smelling squid.”

“This is why I send my clothes to the laundromat. I don’t trust the laundry room here.”

“That’s because you used to put pizza slices into the dryers.”

Yaguchi grinned, with a faraway nostalgic look in her eyes, “Ah~ pizza.”

“Anyway,” Kaori snapped her back to the present. “You need to sit on Tsuji ‘til she coughs up a specialty. She seems to like Trauma- do you think you can take her under your wing?”

“How would that be different from now?” Yaguchi said reluctantly.

“Well, her performance will be directly linked to your own appraisals, for one.”

“Oh, God.”

“Yeah, Yuu-chan thinks it’s a good idea too.”

Maki was already halfway through a surgery, too late for Reina to join in. The intern watched Maki instead from the observation deck above the operating room, fascinated by the rare sight of the cardiothoracic surgeon stressed out. The patient had coded once already and Maki was literally holding his fragile heart and massaging life into it.

‘I wonder what it would feel like to have her hold my heart in her hands.’ She shook her head, blushing slightly, ‘Did I really think something that lame?’ She made up for her moment of girly weakness by glaring at a guy who was staring at her.

Directing her focus back to the surgery below, Reina watched the delicate procedure intently, but turned her thoughts to this morning- she’d once again, for the fifth time (in as many days, her mind supplied helpfully) woken up with Maki.

There would either be a late surgery, or a patient that needed close observation, getting caught up with revision or some reason or other. One of them would fall asleep first, then the other, loathe to wake her, would let her sleep and they’d inevitably end up waking up together the next morning.

It never got awkward- there was no blushing or stammering as they disentangled themselves from each other. Maki would give her a sleepy smile and they’d go wash up and get breakfast together.

Personally, Reina was pretty overjoyed by the connection they seem to be forging. It was no secret that she idolized the senior resident, but she knew it was probably a bad idea to get involved with her supervisor. Reina found herself wondering what the enigmatic surgeon thought about their sleeping arrangement.

‘Tonight, I will go back to my room and sleep.’ Reina resolved sternly. She hadn’t quite unpacked in her new single quarters since her first day- seeing as how she’d been waking up everywhere else but her own bed.

“Great job, everyone.” Maki’s voice came through the speakers in the obervation room. Reina turned her attention back down to the operation theater and saw Maki looking up at her, eyes crinkling into a smile, hidden behind the mask. Grinning back, Reina flashed a thumbs up at the surgeon and saluted cutely with a wink. Maki jerked her head to indicate the exit and made her way over to scrub out.

Making her way to the operating room, Reina greeted the surgical team as they exited, “Otsukareina!” Dr. Masae gave Reina a fistbump as she passed, her shock of pink hair unrulier than usual after being released from her scrub cap.

Maki smiled as she saw her intern waiting. “I thought you were off today, Reina?”

“Yeah, but I got bored. We were hanging out downstairs in the morgue. The open chest cardiac massage was really cool!” Reina enthused.

The cardiacsurgeon bounced a little beside her and smiled broadly, “Deshou? Let’s go out and celebrate!”

Reina’s steps faltered slightly, “Uh, I can’t. I mean, we can go out- but I need to go unpack my room tonight.”

A look of confusion crossed Maki’s face, “Okay, I guess. What does that have to do with going for dinner and drinks?”

Obviously, her senpai did not think anything about them having spent every waking and sleeping moment together the past week, so Reina let it slide. She linked her arm with Maki’s and made their way to the lifts.

Miki slipped out the side door and made her way outside to the small garden beside the hospital- the staff hung out there at during their breaks sometimes to study or sleep. It was nice to be outdoors, away from the sterile atmosphere of their workplace.

“Ah, Mikitty,” Kago greeted Miki as she ambled out towards them. Tsuji looked up from the textbook on her lap and gave her a vague wave before returning to her studies.

“Where’s your intern? Don’t tell me you’ve ditched her already?” Kago asked as she lit up another cigarette. Miki snatched the cigarette from Kago’s lips and took a drag. The internist (not to be confused with an intern) glared at Miki, ”What the hell?”

“It’s her day off- is everyone in on this stupid bet?” Miki groused.

“I thought you quit smoking, Miki-chan?” Tsuji asked.

“Preventive oncology- my new sub-specialty. I’m curing cancer by smoking every stick I come across.”

“TAN!”

“Oh, shit.” Miki tossed the cigarette into the bushes and whirled around to see Aya coming around the corner.

“I saw that. Are you smoking again?”

Kago and Tsuji wisely fled the scene, leaving the two bickering friends behind.

Miki crossed her arms defensively, facing Aya. “You’re not my mother, Aya.”

“You’re a doctor…”

“Oh, come off it. I don’t need a ‘you know better’ lecture- especially not from you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Aya crossed her arms, a perfect reflection of Miki’s stance.

“It means I’ve been noticing the self-prescriptions and rampant pill-popping, is what.”

“Oh, we’re noticing me now? I thought you’ve stopped caring entirely.”

They looked at each other for a long moment, exhaled as they softened their stance and took a seat at the bench Kago and Tsuji had vacated.

“Sorry, Aya-chan. I’ve been heading code team duty all morning- lost every single one. I feel like the angel of death.”

“That’s okay, I understand.” Aya rested her head on Miki’s shoulder, entwining their fingers together.

“Aya, what the hell is with the pill-popping? I mean, I understand the occassional need to, but even th’ nurses are talking about it.”

“I’ve been having headaches. They were prescribed to me and I don’t take any more than I need to.”

Miki patted Aya’s head gently, “You’re pushing yourself too much, Aya-chan. You need a break.”

Silence filled the space save for the rustling of the trees as a breeze blew through the clearing.

“What was that about preventative oncology? Are you thinking about doing that?” Aya asked.

“Naw- me and Yocchan are just seeing how long we can drag on this gag ‘til Nakazawa-san string us up by the balls. She’ll probably get us drunk and sign off on the form- and I’ll wake up the next morning in the baby ward wearing pink with an OBGYN behind my MD.”

Aya laughed, “I’d like to see you in pink scrubs. You’d look really cute.”

“Ugh. I think the worst part about that is that me and Ishikawa would end up in matching colors.”

“Yeah, isn’t it great for Rika-chan, though? I had no idea she was interested in pediatrics. I’m going to scrub in to the latest case she’s heading up. Four years old, brain tumor, it’s going to be my first time assisting in a peds surgery!”

Miki smiled, “You’re so cute when you get excited about cutting.”

“When was the last time you got excited about a surgery?” Aya asked gently. It was a loaded question that could potentially set Miki off- she’d either go on the defensive by blowing up or just brush it off.

“There was last month with that gravure idol’s appendectomy- she was hot!” Humor, of course, Aya sighed, there was that.

“You really have to stop asking your patients out.”

“What? Never on the first consult, I always say,” Miki laughed. “I wait ‘til the second or third follow-up, at least.”

“So bad.” Aya smacked her friend on the shoulder. “Well, I hate to love you and leave you, but I need to go check on my post-ops now.”

“Okay- I think I’ll hang out here a little while more. I’ll see you at dinner, Aya-chan.” Miki watched pensively as Aya headed back into the hospital. She pulled out her well-thumbed copy of ‘The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Medical Specialty’ and continued reading.

“You don’t have to be so worried, Gaki-san. I’m perfectly fine today.” Ai said hoarsely, resting her head on her arms at the breakfast table.

Risa continued petting her friend’s head with one hand, clutching a paper bag with the other. “Of course I’m concerned, Aichan. You were really out of it last night.”

“You were screaming ‘won’t you take me to funky town’ over and over again at the top of your voice.” Eri laughed.
