Title: [Discuss] Korean Drama Thread
Post by: StreakInTheSky on June 02, 2007, 05:23:33 AM
I don't really watch korean dramas, but got curious. They seem to be popular all over Asia.

I just watched the drama, Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang, and I loved it, and it's probably one of my favorite dramas. Definitely one of the best romantic comedies I've seen.

So I guess here you can discuss Korean dramas and maybe recommend some.

To start it off

I'd recommend Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang to everyone. It's hilarious, cute, has some cool action scenes and is a tear jerker. The two leads are also really awesome in it. It's one of the few things I've seen that has a huge time lapse, yet it actually works out for the best. I never got bored watching it. There's a complete subbed batch in D-Addicts, but some of the subs are messed up. That can be fixed by looking up the subs thread in the d-addicts forum.

BUMP!

I have "Delightful Girl, Choon-hyang" on DVD, but I haven't watched it in its entirety. I saw most of it on television but not the end. It's entertaining. I like Han Chae Young.

My sister and I loved "Sweet Spy." My sister isn't usually into Korean dramas, but she liked Dennis Oh. Nam Sang Mi is really cute. I thought it was pretty edgy for showing an after sex scene.

I'm currently watching "Coffee Prince" with Yun Eun Hye. She's so cute as a tomboy. It's about a girl who dresses as a boy to keep her job at a coffee shop (you have to be male to work there because they only want princes). Her boss, who doesn't know she's a girl, starts to have feelings for her. Hilarity ensues.

I'm currently watching Time of Dog and Wolf, starring Lee Jun Ki (the playboy from My Girl, the androgynous dude from the King and the Clown).  Its really good, starts out with that usual format...fast action in the beginning then reverts to childhood, and by episode 2 its current time...and ep 4 just ended and now it looks like another time jump is coming up.

Its paced rather well compared to dragged out korean dramas i've seen.

The only Korean Dramas I've watched are COMA and PAINTER OF THE WIND.

COMA is a Horror/Thriller set in a Hospital and five episodes long (Which are feature length).

It was recommended to me by my Korean PenPal actually. Otherwise I wouldn't have come across it.

Painter of the Wind has our lovely Moon Geun-yeong(One of the sisters in a Tale Of Two Sister) playing as the girl disguised as a boy in order to go to art school.

I loved this drama so much and I am looking forward to the movie.

The ending was greatly satisfying.

Yun Bok/Jeong-hyang forever!

I still can't get over the excitement I got when they won the Best Couple award.

I used to be a huge K-drama fan... but then after watching 1 Litre of Tears, I haven't gone back. It was becoming obvious how K-dramas tend to recycle the same story-lines and make 'em drag on too long.

BUT.

Here are some really good dramas:

- Thank You (my fav K-drama ever. It's so beautiful. And MEANINGFUL)
- Fantasy Couple (funny, funny  )
- Sweet 18 (another really funny, heart-warming drama)
- Full House (it's the most loved/recognised Korean drama for a reason)
- Soulmate (not as well recognised, but boy is it good...)

I've been watching God of Study with Kim Soo Ro and Jiyeon from T-ara. It's based off the Japanese manga, "Dragon Zakura" and there was a J-drama of the same name. I haven't watched the Japanese version so I can't compare, but this version is pretty good. Kim Soo Ro is great, and Jiyeon is just too cute in it. The other girl actress, Go Ah Sung, is pretty cute too and she gives me an Inoue Mao vibe. The kid who plays the main student, Yoo Seung Ho, is a pretty good actor too. The ending theme song is sung by 4minute too.

I guess I should watch Dragon Zakura later cause it has Yama-P, Teppei, Abe Hiroshi, and Aragaki Yui though. So I have a feeling the Japanese one might be better?

^^ :smhid (without the mean face lol) j/k that's just my opinion :P

I've been watching both Korean and Japanese versions of the drama at the same time and of course because j-dramas are only 11 eps and k-dramas are 16, j-dramas feel a bit rushed which is what I got from watching it. Like some parts from the j-ver happens way later in k-ver. They started off similar but then they start to deviate from each other. I'm guessing the j-ver is the closest at following the manga while the k-ver is more flexible, adding more things into their story. The j-ver has a more serious mood than the k-ver. I finally caught up with eps. 6 & 7 today of the k-ver and saw T-ara's cameo. :D Jiyeon is very cute in this drama, her and Yoo Seung Ho look cute together (they already shared a kiss in T-ara's "Lies" MV) And there's a lot of T-ara pimpage throughout the drama if you pay attention.

Not only 4Minute has a song in the OST but also BEAST and f(x) AND...even Jiyeon has a solo song ("Rolling") in the OST too. You will hear it a lot in the drama.

Ji Yeon (T-ara) - 또르르 (God Of Study OST) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di6tQLJtfww#)

Go Ah Sung (who I first saw her in the movie "The Host") reminds me of a younger Im Soo Jung (A Tale of Two Sisters) my favorite K-actress. :D

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh! She was in The Host!?!?!? That's why she seemed so familiar!!! That was a great movie XD Btw you were right, After episode 7, it's a ton of Jiyeon!! I'm happy :D And yea, that's one of the reasons why I always liked K-dramas more then J-dramas, to tenkei's dismay hehe
Whenever I see Jiyeon, I wanna make screencaps and gifs, she's so cute...

Hey dai, since you like Jiyeon, I really recommend this drama. I watched 10 episodes in 4 days lol, it's pretty good!

I just started watching "Cinderella's Sister" with my roomie. It's a twist on the usual Cinderella story since Eun Ju (Moon Geun Young) is the step-sister that no one likes. Hyo Sun (Kim Moon Joo) is Cinderella in this case and everyone favors her, even Eun Ju's mother.
I love Eun Ju because she's such a rebel/bitch/badass.
Hyo Sun is SO CUTE, though. You can't not like her because she's so innocent and amusing.
Taec Yeon from 2PM is supposed to be in it eventually. I don't really care for him, though.

Bad Guy is like a drama/thriller, watched three ep's yesterday and seems pretty good  :) Comrade in Arms is about the korean war in the 50's. I liked Brotherhood of War so I'll start watching this too.

(my updated list of kdramas that I have watched. Stars for ratings)

Before and After Plastic Surgery ***
Boys over Flowers  *****
Coffee Princess ****
Crazy for You ****
Fantasy Couple ***
I am SAM *****
Invincible Lee Pyung Kang *****
IRIS *****
Man Who Can't Get Married ****
Oh! My Lady *****
Personal Taste ****
Prosecutor Princess ****
Style ****
The Vineyard Man ***
The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry *****
Worlds Within ****
You're Beautiful *****

Almost all of these are romantic dramas (kdramas in general are romantic dramas). IRIS was like action/drama, little bit different than the others and I liked it a lot and recommend it for people that haven't watched kdramas before.

Who is watching this series?? China on the wave too!!

"Gumiho" becomes most-watched show in China

New Korean drama "My Girlfriend is Gumiho" starring Korea's most popular stars Lee Seung-gi and Shin Min-ah has become the most-watched show in China, according to the show's promoter IM Company on Thursday.

IM announced in a press release that the first two episodes of SBS series "Gumiho," which premiered locally on August 11, became the top show on China's PPS netTV [online TV streaming website] and on SOHU news.

The new Korean drama beat out a Japanese drama which was the previous No. 1 show on the website.

"Gumiho," a fantasy love story, is about Miho (played by Shin) who is a gumiho, a nine tailed fox that feeds on human livers, who was unleashed by Cha (played by Lee) after being imprisoned for 500 years.

The show was written by sisters Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mir-ran who previously wrote hit dramas "Minamishineyo" (SBS, 2009) and "Hong Gil-dong" (KBS, 2008).

It currently airs on the primetime slot on Wednesday and Thursday nights during the same hour as KBS' "Bread, Love and Dreams" and MBC's "Road No. 1."

^I hope it's just as good as the Taiwanese version with Ariel Lin.

I'm so loving "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" right now. It has one of my favorite actress, Shin Min Ah. One of my favorite T-ara member, Hyomin. And this extremely handsome guy who is just hard to ignore when he's onscreen, Noh Minwoo (formerly Rose from the Trax). Min Ah is extremely cute, and the side characters have a hilarious story on their own. I just saw the episode where AS's UEE makes a cameo, and in the next episode Park Shinhye from "You're Beautiful" will make a cameo as well.

I was looking forward to this drama because I've seen parts of the taiwanese version and thought it was pretty good. I've watched four episodes and so far it's pretty good.

I really like Jung So Min. I liked her in Bad Guy and didn't even realise he was the main actress for this drama until I started watching. I just found out she has the exact same birthday as me as well  :P

Synopsis:

Wi Mae Ri is a stubborn woman and the daughter of a failed businessman without much experience in dating. She starts to date tough rocker Kang Moo Kyul. Problems arise when a perfect guy with a good background and prestigious education, Byun Jung In, gets in the way.

Cast:

Park Joon Gyu as Jung Suk (Jung In's father)

Lee Ah Hyun as Kam So Young (Moo Kyul's mother)

I've only watched the first ep but it impressed me. I haven't seen Moon Geun Young in any other dramas so she's a fresh face for me.  Jang Geun Suk is familiar from You're Beautiful and he's pretty awesome actor  :) There's some other familiar actors too like Kim Jae Wook (Bad Guy, Antique). You can find subtitles from Yellow Cinema and Written in the Heavens (withs2). Yellow Cinema also provides raw files for this drama and many others. So check it out!

The first and only drama I've watched is "별을 따다 줘 / Byeoreul Ttada Jwo" aka Stars Falling From the Sky / Pick the Stars / Wish Upon a Star.
I really liked it. I saw it simply because I was curious on how the song "별을 따다 줘", interpreted by KARA; was used on the show,
and I couldn't stop watching it.

Now I want to see Boys before flowers, and I'm planing to see Playfull Kiss, My gf is a gumiho, Beethover virus, and any other that looks interesting  XD

BTW, that Kim Sarang is really HOT and CUTE, something very difficult to find.

Cheers to all Kdrama addicts fans  :D

Because of an accident involving his ex-girlfriend, Moo Hyuk is left with 3 months to live. This leads him to head back to Korea in search of his biological mother. The discoveries he makes, changes his heart from longing to revenge. Even with all this darkness surrounding him, he finds an unexpected source of happiness with someone he did not expect to love.

Yeah BoA was awesome in Athena  :) I guess her stage experience really helps in acting too, her acting felt really natural (compared to Suzy in Dream High who is a bit stiff).

Talking bout Dream High I really like it! The cast is pretty good cos it has nice variety of kpop group members and even JYP  :) In the first eps Suzy was a bit stiff with her acting and didn't seem as natural as Taecyeon and Eunjung. Even tho Suzy's acting is a bit so so at times I still love her playing a bitch  It's so different from her 'real' image that I have got from the variety shows and music programs.

Ahh just finished Secret Garden. Overall...pretty satisfied with it. At first I wasn't really enjoying it too much, but as a couple episodes went by it finally picked up for me. And now I can finally understand all the parodies Korean artists do about the show lol.

I also started watching Dream High...only on like episode 3 lol. But anyway Suzy's acting didn't bother me much. But yea I like her playing as a bitch too NAzu lol. I think she does a pretty good job of it. The only parts I can think of that did bother me was when Taecyeon acts all cool and stuff lol. It came off a bit too corny and stuff lol. But so far enjoying it...and I find it hilarious that JYP is in it. I just never expected him to be in it.

There's a ton of good kdramas atm but the one you all should watch out for is City Hunter:

Synopsis:

The story takes place in Seoul, 2011. Lee Yoon Sung is a talented MIT-graduate who's working on the international communications team at the Blue House. He encounters dangerous situations while solving a variety of cases, both big and small, for people who need his help, and eventually becomes a "city hunter."

Cast:

Lee Min Ho as Lee Yoon Sung
Park Min Young as Kim Na Na
Lee Joon Hyuk as Kim Young Jo
Hwang Sun Hee as Jin Soo Hee
Goo Ha Ra as Choi Da Hye

Just watched the first ep and it's pretty fucking awesome!  :) The first ep was kinda prologue for all the stuff that's gonna happen in the drama so if you read the synopsis and start to wonder what's happening in the first ep don't worry. Second ep is gonna start the drama and I guess there's gonna be a whole lot of stuff happening  :)

Heartstrings

Title: 넌 내게 반했어 / Neon Naege Banhaesseo
English title: Heartstrings
Previously known as: 페스티벌 / Festival
Genre: Romance, music
Episodes: 16
Broadcast network: MBC
Broadcast period: 2011-Jun-29 to 2011-Aug-18
Air time: Wednesday & Thursday 21:55

Synopsis:

Lee Shin is a university student majoring in modern music. He is also the vocalist and guitarist of the band "The Stupid." Shin is known for his good looks and strong passion for music, but in reality he is cold, lacks interest in anything unrelated to music and has neither dreams nor plans for the future. He initially likes Jung Yoon Soo, a dance professor at university, but this all changes when he meets Lee Kyu Won.

Lee Kyu Won is a bright and outgoing student who was born into a prestigious family and is majoring in traditional Korean instruments, especially the gayageum. Kyu Won's grandfather, Lee Dong Gun, is one of the top 3 traditional musicians of his age and his biggest wish is to see his granddaughter become a traditional music prodigy. Trying to live up to her grandfather's expectations, Kyu Won immerses herself in training and becomes a university student who knows nothing outside of her studies. As her friends are fans of "The Stupid", she was forced to go to the band's concert with them. There she saw Lee Shin performing live, and is immediately captivated by him.

Cast:

Jung Yong Hwa as Lee Shin
Park Shin Hye as Lee Kyu Won
Song Chang Ui as Kim Suk Hyun
So Yi Hyun as Jung Yoon Soo
Woo Ri as Han Hee Joo
Kang Min Hyuk as Yeo Joon Hee
Lee Hyun Jin as Hyun Ki Young
Im Se Mi as Cha Bo Woon

I really like this drama :) The OST is superb, mostly cos of C.N Blue and Yong Hwa  8) Park Shin Hye isn't bad singer either and I was kinda suprised to hear how well she sings. If any of you watched You're Beautiful you probably remember how Yong Hwa's character had a crush on Park Shin Hye's character but she loved the other guy... :P Well in this drama they're couple so it's kinda nice to watch it  :)

If you don't mind older dramas, I liked 네 멋대로 해라 (aka 'Ruler of your own world'). I believe it was Lee Na Young's breakout role. My wife tells me part of the soundtrack was performed by k-indie band 3rd line butterfly, so bonus points for that.

recently I'm watching some k-dramas, like Windstruck and Speedy Scandal

Windstruck is really good, the storyline is going up and down, if you're used to cry when watching dramas it'll be most likely you'll cry watching this

Speedy Scandal is also good, worth the watch. It'd mostly focusing on humor, but there are also some dilemmas to add more flavor to this drama  lovin' it

and I want to finish watching Full House, it's been a long time but idk I just can't seem to finish watching that  :banghead: poor time management

Finished watching "Queen Inhyun's Man" awhile back with Yoo Inna. Picked it up only because Yoo Inna's in it not knowing what it's about XD. Well anyway it's one of those time-traveling dramas. The main guy goes back and forth between his time and Yoo Inna's time and ....stuff happens haha. Anyway I really liked this drama and I don't believe there was an episode where I found myself bored. AND it's one of the few dramas where I actually felt satisfied with the ending! That almost never happens for me!

Just last night I finished "Big" and it started off well, but then in the middle it got sort of EHH. Suzy (missA) was a bit of a bitch towards the end and I hated her character. This ending I felt a bit disappointed, as it felt a bit rushed. Couple draggy moments in this drama as it approached the last episode.

Now I'm picking up "Reply 1997" with Eunji from A Pink since I heard good things about it. Just waiting for enough subs to come out in case I get too addicted. I don't want to end up waiting too long for the next subs to come out XD

Has anybody watched "History of a Salaryman"? Is it any good? I was thinking of making that my next drama as I wait for my friends to finish The Moon Embracing the Sun so we can watch IRIS together.

I did see Beethoven Virus and Athena. I found both of them great but a little too long, it did get a little repetitive towards the end. Great watch nonetheless.

I watched Athena last year, and enjoyed it more than Iris, but it did start to drag a bit in the later episodes with the all the attacks on NTS. Speaking of NTS, their security sucks. Anyways, worth watching for Soo Ae alone imo.

I've watched quite a few dramas, and I love most of them, but occasionally I come across dramas that tend to bore me with the drawn out conclusion and I just drop it midway through  :(

Like a lot of people mentioned Iris is great, but I hated the ending it was so sad !
I won't even bother giving Iris 2 a try, it's just not going to be the same as the original.

Which reminds me of Dream High, the first one was great overall, and I loved IU in it c:
I gave Dream High 2 a chance, but it just wasn't as good as the first Dream High, but I loved Jiyeon, would be great to see IU and Jiyeon in a drama  XD

The Innocent Man was an amazing drama, but annoying at times, and the ending is slightly confusing, still it was very good imo. :twothumbs

hello ...  :welcome

i have a very recommended movies :twothumbs
this movies is so funny, also romantic and a little sad  XD

The Beast and The Beauty

plot :
It involves voice-actor Dong-gun (Ryu Seung-beom), whose blind girlfriend Hae-ju (Shin Min-a) suddenly receives surgery to regain her eyesight.
The funny part begin where Gong Gun face a critical identity crisis that at some point I believe that he would kill himself but of course that is not possible because it will be the end of the story.
Gong Gun tried everything to make his face look more attractive and something happened that force him to hide himself and lies that he need to go to Hawaii for work.
In the meantime Hae Ju that desperately wants to see Gung Gun accidentally meets handsome Jun Ha (Kim Kang Woo). Jun Ha finds Hae Ju really attractive and soon falls in love with her.

Stairway to Heaven.... on my second watch of this, only made it up to episode 10 my first try but giving it another go, up to episode 3, didn't realize until this time that was a young Park Shine Hye in it.

Finish watching 7th grade civil servant last week and the moon embracing the sun last night.
Both dramas are the type that very interesting to watch at the beginning and getting very annoying to watch at the end because it's alright for everyone else to die as long the couple get together in the end..  :banghead: (this is my opinion though, dun like this kind of ending  :nervous) The same feeling I get watching RomeoXJuliet long time ago lol

I really like Choi Kang-hee and Joo Won in the 7th grade civil servant, they look cute together~ and for the the moon embracing the sun, I must say the child actors did a better job than the real actors for the first six episodes.

Still, I enjoy watching both dramas~ :yep:

im not sure of stairway to heaven, that drama was pretty awkward to me. The only good part was probably the beginning, where park shin hye played her character extemely well. It was insane how the little step sister turned into kim tae hee lol.  :panic:

^I just stared watching "I Hear you voice" and so far I like it. I'm on episode 6 I think.

Recommendation for a good romance comedy? Have you seen "he who can't marry"? That was one of my favorites.

I'm also watching Lee Soon Shin is the Best mainly because it has IU in it and Yoo Inna. It's my first 50 episode drama and it ends this weekend THANK GOD. It's not that good, but I started it and it was decent up until a certain part and then it just got ridiculous. But I continued to watch it because I want to see how it ends lol. Also there's this one couple in the drama I enjoy watching and for me it's the best part of the drama.

50 Episodes?? Daebak, I never watch 50-episodes drama... I'm concerned if it's too much I'll get bore in the middle..

right now, I'm watching "The Heirs" and I love it...

Took too long of break from K-dramas, only thing I really don't like about them is that they're 16-20 episodes each compared to 10 or so for Japanese ones. Just started on this one though, up to episode 5 and it's been a real winner so far, have read that the second half gets even better, "Prosecutor Princess".

Does anybody recommend king of bakery , kim tak gu? it no then i'm the one will be sharing yet

aka : Bread, Love and Dreams
(http://asianwiki.com/images/3/31/Bread%2CLove_and_Dreams.jpg)

"Bread, Love and Dreams" covers the life of Kim Tak-Gu from the 1970's until the late 1980's as he becomes one of the most successful bakers in all of Korea.

The president of Geosung baking company Koo Il-joong (Jeon Kwang-Leol) loved Kim Mi-soon (Jeon Mi-Seon), but Koo Il-joong's mother was against their relationship. Because of this, and as a marriage of convenience, Koo Il-Joong instead married Suh In-sook (Jeon In-Hwa). They had two daughters, Ja-kyung and Ja-rim, but no sons. Sometime later, Il-joong has an extra-marital affair with his true love Mi-Soon and they conceive a son, who will later be named Tak-gu.

Meanwhile, In-sook is afraid that Tak-gu may one day become the heir to the Geosung baking company, In-Sook then seduces the company's Chief Secretary Han Seung-jae (Jeong Seong-Mo) and they conceive a son who will later be named Ma-joon (Ju Won). Years later, on a rainy evening, Koo Il-joong's mother overhears a conversation between Han Seung-Jae and In-sook. She collapses and dies. During this time In-sook loses her bracelet and her son Ma-joon is there to retrieve it. Ma-Joon now knows who his real father is.

Meanwhile to protect Kim Mi-Soon and Tak-gu, Koo Il-Joong orders a man named Jin-Goo (Park Seong-Woong) to kidnap them. Seo In-Suk and Han Seung-Jae attempts to kill Tak-gu, but he is fortunate enough to escape. Tak-gu then meets his lifelong mentor Pal-Bong (Jang Hang-Seon) , who runs Palbong Bakery.

Tak-gu first met Yoo-kyung (Yu Jin) when they were children. She lived through a difficult childhood, with an abusive father and having little money. Yoo-kyung learned to smile for the first time when they met, but when Tak-gu goes to Koo Il-joong's house as the first son they separated. 12 years later they meet again and their love is rekindled. Nevertheless, Yoo-kyung now believes that love is nothing when compared to money and power and because of this she leaves Tak-gu to marry Ma-joon instead.

me personal give 5 stars for those drama  very recommended  :thumbup

Just started on Liar Game which began on the 20th and had had two episodes so far, it's a remake of the classic Japanese series. Mostly similar as contestants are vying for a cash prize and trying to swindle money away from their opponent, like the original the first story is an ex-teacher stealing his former student's money. Main difference is that the game is a TV show and all the contestant's movements are secretly taped and shown on TV, least that's how it's started it out. Instead of the main heroine being named Nao it's now Nam and she's also about to get help from someone who is about to be released from prison. Too early to give a judgement on it but it's started out okay, Nam is played by Kim So Eun.
