Suzuki A: The young ones keep increasing, haven't you gotten tired of us yet? (lol) I've been wondering lately where the times where we were called young have gone off too. Lately we get mature songs and I'm doing my best to make sure they don't get performed half-heartedly. On the contrary, I'm thinking that we should create a gap (from the younger members). But sometimes I do want to do cute songs too. (lol)

Miyamoto: I love "Romance no tochuu" a lot. Thank you so much. Tsunku-san puts a lot of importance on rhythm and during rehearsal he teaches us directly. So from now on I hope to become so good at rhythm that I could even become Tsunku-san's assistant. I still don't know his contact details, but once I get them I will ask more about rhythm.

Satou: A personal request? Will this really reach Tsunku-san? Well, I want an original song or MaaDuu! A song like "Naniwa tomo are!" or "Robokiss" would be good. I want for MaaDuu to become the W born in the Heisei-era and be able to sing playful songs like that!

Ishida: In the video where I was told I passed the audition, Tsunku-san something along the lines of "Ishida's entertainment-skills are unknown but I see possibilities there." But before I knew it, I can't say funny things at all but have become this lame character, so I feel a bit that I betrayed his expectations. Is it okay for me to be this way!?

Michishige: I want to go and play with Tsunku-san's kids! He has three kids and the oldest ones, the twins, are really adorable! A girl and a boy, and the boy is really shy but the girl is all "Sayumi-cha~n" and really friendly. I love children, so I'd love to bring lunch and go on a picnic~.

Sugaya: From now on I'll go my own way! At one point he told me "Isn't your hair kinda bright?" but lately I get told that "This is Sugaya's personality," so I'm really happy. I think that once I turn 20 I'll calm down a bit... but I probably won't change too much. (lol)

Fukumura: The Tsunku-san I created in "Tomodachi collection" [T/N: A game?] looks just like you so I want you to see it. I bought the game and meant to create H!P but because of that there are hardly any guys around, right? So I made a Tsunku-san and he looks just like him. I did a Hatake-san too, and I get told that he looks like him too.

[Monthly BARKS, TSUNKU♂ interview vol.1] Morning Musume had plans to announce break-up at first “KOHAKU”. Last Half

Tsunku♂ is the lead singer of Sharam Q, a rock band celebrating the 25th anniversary this year, and charisma figure producer of Hello! Project with all girl group stars like Morning Musume。, Berryz Kobo, and ℃-ute. He also has a face as president of entertainment company TNX and a father of three at home.

The multi-talented musician never seems to stop running after his dreams of new music and entertainment. This is a special long interview to cover Tsunku♂ by BARKS. We are going to dig into his thoughts and ideas on Tsunku♂’s world and the legend of Sharam Q.

Volume 1 to feature how it all began 16 years ago – ‘Hello! Project’

――― How do you think it’s continued for so long? What do you think is the main factor?

TSUNKU♂: In a word, “trust.” Students don’t follow their teachers if they do not respect them. So I try to earn the kids’ respect by always giving my all and by always being honest with what I do.

――― about the kids…

TSUNKU♂ : Kids are no longer kids 10 years old. They already have preferences in clothes and think things like, “I want this hairstyle, and I want to be seen this way.” I think it’s difficult for me at Hello! Project to say, “TSUNKU♂ the producers says this… This is how it is.”

――― When you first started Morning Musume, were you thinking that you wanted it to last for a long time?

TSUNKU♂ : Not at all. At first, I wanted them to make a break up announcement after the first year. When they were invited to perform “DAITE Hold On ME!” at “NHK KOHAKU UTAGASSEN,” I wanted to announce that “we will break up” during the live broadcast. In my head, I envisioned a fun farewell tour to follow. (laughs) Well, things didn’t work out that way, and “LOVE Machine” sold very well. I was able to make good music. From that point, it became really fun for me to make music. I think it was able to continue because I could leave an artistic statement.

――― During all of that, did you ever think about quitting Morning Musume, or the Hello! Project?

TSUNKU♂ : Yes, I did. I thought that if I quit, I could have a new life and a new path. But I just thought and never tried to act on it. There is a part of me that wants Hello! Project to keep competing. Right now, Hello! Project is heading in an interesting direction, and I think it would be fun to leave some new achievements with them.

―――℃-ute seems to be doing pretty well too…

TSUNKU♂ : Yeah. They are growing their female fan base. Also, I think they are getting cooler as they mature into adults. I just hope their minds mature as well. They are still under by the Hello! Project curse or spell, and they need to break free from that on their own

――― Would you say that Momochi (Momoko Tsugunanga) of Berryz Kobo is someone who broke free from the spell?

TSUNKU♂ : No. Momochi is under the Hello! Project spell. Even in times when I think, “You don’t need to smile there,” or “It’s not that type of song,” automatically smiles when a camera is pointed at her. It’s like habit. That’s because she grew up in Hello! Project.

――― Is there anybody you think who is close to breaking free from the Hello! Project spell?

TSUNKU♂: Chisato Okai, and Michishige Yayumi of Morning Musume aren’t bad. Haruna Iikubo as well. Also, Miyabe Natsuyaki of Berryz Kobo might be able to if she can get the hang of it.

――― From what you just said, I get the feeling that you are not looking at the girls as a group. Instead, you are looking at their individual characters and minds and trying to produce a future for each girl using those details.

TSUNKU♂: That is the case with Hello! Project. It’s like when a tiger pushes it’s young off a cliff. It’s about how they push back. There are some who push back and some who falter. It’s the ones who are more flexible when pushing back that have more potential. The more stubborn ones are in danger. It’s also a good thing if they can find a good boyfriend and get in a good marriage. However, if they plan on staying and competing in the entertainment business, the ones who are stiff have a hard time. That being said, Rika Ishikawa has the attitude of, “I don’t know or care about hair styles. What kind of clothes should I wear?” This type of girl can usually survive. The stubborn types get put into a box, and it’s very difficult. Okai of ℃-ute and Saki Nakjima are flexible. When there are two flexible members in a group, it makes things very fun.

――― I see…

TSUNKU♂: I tell everybody, “During recording, if you can just remember the lyrics, I can do the rest. When performing live, I’ll take care of the booking. The choreographer will prepare the dance moves. But, I won’t tell you what you should do between tours. For example, professional ice skater, Mao Asada, and professional golfer, Ryo Ishikawa, think about ice-skating and golf from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed. That’s what a professional athlete does. What do you do normally? You will see a difference between those who understand that the scheduled rehearsal time is not the only time to rehearse and those who do not understand that.

――― Aah…

TSUNKU♂: When we (Sharam Q) decided that we wanted to succeed as a band, we thought about the band all day long. But do you girls only think about going out after rehearsal? (laughs) Back in the day, there was a hungry AKB48 that was watching Morning Musume at the Akihabara Theater all day while thinking, “We want to succeed too. How can we succeed?” There were results from that. So we have to use that approach too. When you go home, practice your dance moves. When watching variety TV shows, think about how people react to the things you say. Research how to hold a microphone in a way that looks cool… Are any of them doing these types of things? I talk about these types of things. (laughs)


――― So the future of Hello! Project… What vision do you have for them?

TSUNKU♂: Right now, I’m not looking too far into the future. I’m trying to create a solid foundation. I talked about ℃-ute and Berryz Kobo earlier. It’s great to be happy about playing at Nippon Budokan. But I wonder if they are physically and mentally ready to play there.

――― I see…

TSUNKU♂: One more thing… There are fewer OTAKU now. Now, they have all become PUCHI OTAKU. A new type of idol world was born since the time of Seiko Matsuda and KyonKyon. It’s a different world. Even old ladies know about idols and say things like, “I don’t know who is who, but aren’t there are a lot of idols?” Of course there are people who say, “Hello! Project is kind of like this. Morning Musume is like this.” These people are not as “maniac” as before.

――― You’re right. Idol fans have become mainstream.

TSUNKU♂: What will happen to Hello! Project? Rather than revert back to the Hello! Project that everybody knew, I want to make it casual, fashionable, and cool. No matter how young, somewhere there is a “cool beauty.” That’s where I want to take Hello! Project. I think that Juice=Juice is a bit like that.

Mang I forgot which thread had a link to the J-Melo thing where you write stuff to subtly influence Tsunku. But anyway, I FINALLY finished writing my thing (I hope I'm not late) and man that was a lot of work. My message to Morning Musume is like two monster paragraphs and one shorter fluff paragraph. But yay! I hope it wasn't all for nothing since I shared my SOUL (...). The picture I chose was of reindeers walking on the road with their butts facing our car because well, Tsunku said he wanted pictures of where we live, right? So what's better than reindeer butts.

So... Morning Musume popped up in this episode of Janiben (Kanjani8's TV show) that I saw. Guest has nothing to do with UF whatsoever. Interesting is that this show airs on Kansai TV --- KTV. Which is a part of Fuji TV.

Hm. Any exposure is good exposure. o_o

Had it been an old song, I wouldn't care nor find it weird. But for them to pick a new album song and a new glorified b-side?
I'd say that's really good. And interesting, really.

It's great to see the dynamic changing and growing between Sayu and the younger girls too with some of them getting more proactive.
