The thing that bugs me the most about AKBaby now that I think about it is the fact that they're somewhat egging on the "bad" behavior of the idol otaku fans (which is nothing new).  I'm not going to be surprised when the fans come up to the girls and start asking them to have their baby (they probably already do this though) or worse...

Another day, another ad/tie-in.

Looks like they are now promoting tutoring:

I recall Mayu Watanabe once had an ad tie-in with a home tutoring agency?

The Kagoshima promotion with Yukirin is really nice, and I am actually amazed that Japan Post has AKB48 stamps. Fantastic promotion for the group.

I agree the make a baby with me campaign is strange, but one aspect that I think is a bit funny is Yuko once again getting to enjoy her breast fetish....

That is the Pawnage of the century!!! I am truly in awe of the marketing power of AKB48. Too early to tell if the "Make a Baby With Me" campaign is their "Jump the Shark" moment, but getting the Stamps is something that AKB48 can always be proud of.:cow:

Japan Times has a very good entertainment section with dedicated writers, but they are not particularly kind to idols.

In a well written critique of Kaela Kimura's new CD/DVD "8Eight8", writer Daniel Robson got a bit snarky towards the new AKB48 campaign:  "Unlike her contemporaries, Kimura won't invite you to make a virtual baby with her, doesn't expose any skin and eschews sappy songs about how innocent she is. She wrote or cowrote all the lyrics on "8Eight8," and she even takes the "total produce" credit; that is, she personally was involved in deciding the shape her album would take overall, a job too often entrusted to an A&R suit and not an artist".....

He goes on with a positive reveiew of Kaela's work, but takes her to task for the fact that some of her songs are used in ad campaigns: "But there's a fly in the ointment (or stuck to the web): Some of these tracks have been used for high-profile ad campaigns over the last year or so — and the stench of capitalism is indelible. So listening to the contagious "Ring A Ding Dong," you can't help but think of a certain mobile-phone brand. You know how inviting a vampire into your home renders you powerless to defeat it? Same thing goes for a CD full of jingles."
That was the part I disagree with- foreign film and music celebrities will fly to Japan, film some CM's for the money, knowing that their audience back home won't  see them in the ads, because somehow having your music used in an advertisement downgrades the music, or a film actor who does a series of televised Coffee ads in Japan, would never do the same in the home market, because being in a TV ad is considered a sign of being desperate.

I have gotten to know so many good bands and singers because I heard a jingle in a CM, and often the band is given credit in the CM. Same goes with music used in dramas. I have then looked the band up, started checking out their music and ending up buying CD's and really liking said band. I like the fact that in the Japanese entertainment world,  the work of popular music artists are integrated into television drama or anime shows, and that the fans do not have the same dismissive attitude about it as the writer in above piece does.

But I do want to thank the Japan Times entertainment writers, because they do a great job of promoting independent artists who are often locked out of the mainstream entertainment world, and those bands and artists are very talented, and deserve their chance to be highlighted. :cow:

Dentsu Announces "2011 Hit Products in Japan"
This Year's Top Trends: Smartphones, LED Light Bulbs and Tokyo Sky Tree -

TOKYO, Nov. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Dentsu Inc. (tokyo:4324)(isin:JP3551520004)(president & ceo:Tadashi Ishii)(head office:Tokyo)(capital:58)(capital:967.1 million yen) announced today the release of its "2011 Hit Products in Japan" report. Produced as part of a series that has been chronicling hit products since 1985, the latest report examines and generalizes major trends that represented the "consumer mindset" in 2011. It is based on an Internet survey of Japanese consumers carried out in November 2011 by Dentsu Innovation Institute (DII).

The following top 20 products (including some popular content and social phenomena) were selected by the Internet survey respondents from approximately 130 popular items. The total scores in three categories - "recognition," "have/had interest" and "is/was popular" - were calculated to determine the top products of 2011. The figures in parentheses are last year's rankings. Previously unranked products are indicated with (-).

The proliferation of smartphones is continuing, and this product once again ranked No. 1. While information tools such as smartphones and tablets along with social media services such as Twitter rank in the top 20, the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake which occurred on March 11 can be seen in the No. 2 ranking for LED light bulbs and the first-time appearance of several energy-saving and eco-friendly products. The high rankings for Tokyo Sky Tree, Nadeshiko Japan and AKB48 can be attributed to the way in which they lifted a weary nation's spirits.

2011 Hit Products No. 1: Smartphones (1) No. 2: LED light bulbs (10) No. 3: Tokyo Sky Tree (new broadcasting tower scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2012) (7) No. 4: Nadeshiko Japan (the Japan women's national football team who won the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup Germany (TM) tournament) (-) No. 5: AKB48 (48-member all-girl theater/idol group with its own theater in Akihabara, Tokyo) (18) No. 6: Mana Ashida (a seven-year-old child actress, model, singer and celebrity) (-) No. 7: Hybrid vehicles (16) No. 8: Disaster prevention supplies and emergency food supplies (purchased in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake) (-) No. 9: Electric and battery-powered fans (although most Japanese homes are equipped with air conditioners, many families bought and used electric or battery-powered fans instead to conserve energy in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake) (-) No. 10: Digital broadcasting-equipped widescreen flat-panel TVs (4) No. 11: Munchable (chunky) chili oil (3) No. 12: Energy-saving home appliances (-) No. 13: Lady Gaga (-) No. 14: Automatic bread makers (-) No. 15: Tablet information devices (tablets) (19) No. 16: B-grade local gourmet food (term used for inexpensive local food eaten in a casual setting; A-grade refers to expensive gourmet food eaten in a formal setting.) (11) No. 17: Steve Jobs (-) No. 18: Twitter and other microblogging platforms (2) No. 19: Electric cars (-) No. 20: K-pop music groups (Girls' Generation, Kara and other Korean groups) (-)

Dentsu "Hit Product Recognition Survey" Overview

        Survey period:     November 5-6, 2011
Survey subjects:   Men and women nationwide aged between 20 and 69
        Sample size:       1,000 (responses received)

Smartphones show no sign of losing popularity in Japan where the mobile device type has been voted top of a consumer survey to identify the most popular products of the year.

Steve Jobs and LED light bulbs are two of the more obscure items listed on the 2011 Hit Products in Japan report which, run by advertising firm Dentsu, is no ordinary consumer product listing. In it, Lady Gaga rubs shoulders with other ‘consumer products’ like the as yet unfinished Tokyo Sky Tree building, bread-making machines, a child actress, the Japanese women’s football team and chili oil.

Tech products do not dominate the rankings as one might expect, but smartphones once again top the list, as they did last year, and tablet devices climbed four places to stand fifteenth overall.

The tragic events of earlier this earlier year played a key role in shaping the remainder of the top 20 list, as Dentsu explains in a press announcement:

The impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake which occurred on March 11 can be seen in the No. 2 ranking for LED light bulbs and the first-time appearance of several energy-saving and eco-friendly products. The high rankings for Tokyo Sky Tree, Nadeshiko Japan and AKB48 can be attributed to the way in which they lifted a weary nation’s spirits.

Japan is famed for preference of its own products and culture, which makes Steve Jobs’ position as a new entry in seventeenth significant. The death of the Apple CEO was profoundly felt in Japan, where Apple’s iPhone 4S continues to sell well after KDDI joined Softbank as a vendor of the device.

It is somewhat surprising to see that Twitter (which grouped with other microblogs in the survey) has dropped from number two last year to eighteenth this year. The service is widely used in Japan — as the company’s co-founder Jack Dorsey recently noted — but rather than Japanese people tiring of Twitter, it is more likely that its establishment as a mainstream platform has made it is less novel than other items on the list.

Nonetheless, here is it is the list of top twenty consumer products, which were derived from a survey of 1,000 Japanese consumers taken in November – last year’s ranking for each product is in brackets.

Smartphones (1)
LED light bulbs (10)
Tokyo Sky Tree (new broadcasting tower scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2012) (7)
Nadeshiko Japan (the Japan women’s national football team who won the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany (TM) tournament) (-)
AKB48 (48-member all-girl theater/idol group with its own theater in Akihabara, Tokyo) (18)
Mana Ashida (a seven-year-old child actress, model, singer and celebrity) (-)
Hybrid vehicles (16)
Disaster prevention supplies and emergency food supplies (purchased in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake) (-)
Electric and battery-powered fans (although most Japanese homes are equipped with air conditioners, many families bought and used electric or battery-powered fans instead to conserve energy in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake) (-)
Digital broadcasting-equipped widescreen flat-panel TVs (4)
Munchable (chunky) chili oil (3)
Energy-saving home appliances (-)
Lady Gaga (-)
Automatic bread makers (-)
Tablet information devices (tablet PCs) (19)
B-grade local gourmet food (term used for inexpensive local food eaten in a casual setting; A-grade refers to expensive gourmet food eaten in a formal setting.) (11)
Steve Jobs (-)
Twitter and other microblogging platforms (2)
Electric cars (-)
K-pop music groups (Girls’ Generation, Kara and other Korean groups) (-)

Fans vote for DLC costume for character Serah in upcoming Square Enix RPG
The official site for Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII-2 game's beta testers revealed on Saturday the winning costume designed by AKB48 member Yūko Ōshima that will be featured in the upcoming game. The costume will be available as a free downloadable content item for the character Serah after the game has been released.

The website held a popularity contest in November for two costumes co-designed by Ōshima. The winning "Exposure and Defense" costume (pictured at right) received 16,927 votes, and the other "Red Riding Hood" costume (pictured below) received 10,678 votes.

Ōshima previously starred in a commercial for the upcoming game that featured her attending a Final Fantasy XIII-2 development meeting and proposing her costume ideas.

Ōshima is also acting as a beta tester for the game.

Square Enix will release the game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles in Japan on December 15, along with a limited-edition PlayStation 3 Final Fantasy XIII-2 Lightning Edition Ver.2 bundle. The United States will then receive the game on January 31, and Europe will receive it on February 3.

AKB48 TAKES EQUAL PARTS CHOIR, SLUMBER PARTY AND BEAUTY PAGEANT, MIXES WELL

Jumbo Musical Group Is a Marketing Machine Unrivaled in Japan

Published: December 04, 2011

The 60-plus-member girl group AKB48 is based on the idea of "idols you can meet every day" and is seen all over Japanese media. They perform daily shows at a theater in Tokyo's geek mecca of Akihabara that are so popular the tickets are sold by lottery. An oh-so-Japanese blend of sweet and sexy, innocent yet suggestive, the girls from Teams A, K, B and their members-in-training sell not only bubble-gum pop but also products ranging from coffee to "cram" schools -- specialized courses that help students meet specific goals, such as gaining entrance to university.

"They are the second-most beautiful girl vs. the No. 1 beautiful girl," said Noriko Hayashi, strategic planner at Beacon Communications in Tokyo. "The biggest difference compared to idols from past generations is, with past idols we think they don't go to the toilet or eat McDonald's. But [AKB48] will make funny faces and talk about dirty jokes. They've come down to the same level as consumers -- that's the biggest appeal."

That appeal has spread across Asia, with official AKB48 stores in Hong Kong and Taiwan and a cafe in Singapore serving Japanese fusion food alongside helpings of AKB48 videos and occasional visits from group members. Singapore, a hub city that draws visitors from around the region, is also home to AKB48's first overseas theater, where group members perform a few times a month.

Fans include girls who want to be in the band, and guys who want to be with the band members. Management maximizes engagement by allowing fans to vote for the girl they think should be the top group member. Ballots are included with the purchase of a CD -- perhaps explaining why three consecutive singles sold 1.3 million copies or more, each within one week, earlier this year.

Mr. Akimoto has launched spinoff groups in other Japanese cities and last month announced the inaugural class of JKT48 in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. "JKT48 will become a bridge between Indonesia and Japan," he was quoted as saying.

It's not clear what changes will have to be made for Indonesia, a majority Muslim country, as AKB48 treads a fine line between "kawaii" (Japanese for "cute") and over-the-top.

The most-viewed video on its YouTube channel -- NSFW, and with more than 55 million hits -- features the young women pillow-fighting in lingerie, eating candy and kissing each other. And a recent ad that raised a few eyebrows showed idol Yuko Oshima nursing an infant with the message, "Would you make a baby with me?" Fans can upload a photo of themselves, which is combined with the idol's photo to create an image of a fictitious baby. The promotion is for the AKB48 internet service, which includes an AKB48.net.jp email address and exclusive content for subscribers.

Japanese advertising giant Dentsu just ranked AKB48 No. 5 on its list of "2011 Hit Products in Japan," citing the band's contributions to lifting spirits after the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country.

On December 15th, AKB48’s Oshima Yuko attended a countdown event for the upcoming Square Enix game, “Final Fantasy XIII-2” at the Bic Camera Yurakucho.

Wearing her personally designed costume, Oshima commented, “The female characters in FF are exposed, but they’re strong. That’s the kind of outfit that I wanted to make. I’m satisfied with the outcome.”

The ‘Final Fantasy’ series is a popular RPG that has over sold over 100 million units worldwide. This new game is the sequel to “Final Fantasy XIII”, which was released back in 2009. It’s available for PS3 and Xbox for 7,980 yen (approximately $102 USD).

Singer-songwriter Fukui Mai also attended the countdown event, where she sang the game’s theme song, “Yakusoku no Basho“.
