Title: Morning Musume vs. Godzilla (Part 16: The Song of Mothra)
Post by: chera on April 03, 2007, 05:24:55 AM
Bear with me, guys and gals - it's been a long time since I've done a non-pervy fanfic.

Morning Musume vs. Godzilla

Warning: This fanfic contains lots of violence and lots and lots of death.  Heck, it's a Godzilla fic!

The story so far (up to Part 16: The Song of Mothra)
While shooting an idol video on a desert island off the coast of Thailand, Aichan is captured by a giant ape.  He defends her from the hostile monsters of the island, but is later captured and brought back to Japan, where Tsunku wants to turn him into an idol.  Meanwhile, ships start disappearing across the world under mysterious circumstances.  The cause is revealed when a giant monster, dubbed 'Gojira' by the media, appears in Okinawa.  In less than a day, it destroys the entire island, killing over a million people.  The Prime Minister of Japan decides to explode a nuclear device over the monster.  The monster survives and makes its way to the Island of Kyushu.  In a desperate move, the world's nuclear powers drop the equivalent of 5 million Hiroshima bombs on Kyushu.  This fails to stop the monster.

A secret Japanese government agency called NERV recruits the three young girls of Viyuden in what it sees as humanity's last hope against Gojira: the EVA program.  Piloting giant robots, the girls join with three martial artists in a last ditch assault on the monster.  The EVAs succeed in pushing the monster back to the remains of Hiroshima, but in the process, Sakuraba's EVA is seriously damaged.  In a subsequent attack, Saku and Fujita are killed by the monster.  Yui and Erika are severely injured, and Yoshida sacrifices his life to distract the monster and give Rika time to carry her team-mates off the battlefield.  Safe in NERV's underground HQ, Rika confronts Ikari, but never realizes the true nature of the shadowy organization.

Meanwhile, Koharu and Sayumi are kidnapped by the leader of a religious cult who plans to sacrifice them to appease Godzilla's wrath.  They arrive at a ruined Kyoto.  Before being sacrificed, Sayumi sings an ancient song.  Suddenly, a strange wind blows...

Prelude
Tokyo, the present

“That sure was a tiring rehearsal, wasn’t it, Kohachan?” asked Sayumi Michishige as she and Koharu Kusumi walked out of the dressing room and made their way to the Hello! Project staff lounge.

“Yes, it was… hey, what’s going on?” exclaimed Koharu Kusumi as she entered the lounge.

The Hello! Project staff sat silent, crowded in front of a television.  The two girls joined the staff as a television anchorwoman droned on in a grave tone.

“Today, conservative members of the US Congress angrily protested Iran’s possible role in the mysterious disappearance yesterday of the Carrier Battle Group Abraham Lincoln off the Straits of Hormuz.  They warned that such an act of aggression could lead to a war with the Islamic Republic.  A spokesperson of the Iranian Foreign Ministry denied that the Iranian military had any role in the disappearance of the ships, which included one of several American nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in the Gulf.  The spokesperson did note that significant concentrations of depleted uranium, an element used in many types of American munitions, were found on the Iranian coast near the last known location of the Battle Group.”

Koharu hugged herself, feeling goosebumps on her arms.  “That’s scary…”, she whispered to herself.

“C’mon, Kohachan, this is really making me nervous.  Can’t we all just learn to live together in peace?” said Sayumi, pulling Koharu along.

Meanwhile… Off the Andaman Coast of Thailand

“We’ve already got such great footage already, Tsunku.  Why do we have to go to this new island?” asked Ai Takahashi.

“Because, Aichan, the locals say that this island has legendary wildlife, and that humans have never set foot on it before.  It would make for even better footage for your new Idol Video,” explained Tsunku.

“Tsunku, if humans have never set foot on it before, how can anybody know of the legendary wildlife?!  And besides, the locals probably have good reasons for refusing to take us there on their boats,” said the young idol.

“Whatever… Quit arguing.  I got us a boat, and besides, we’re already more than half-way there,” replied the producer, as he sat on the rocking motorboat.  “At the very least, you’ll get a chance to relax a bit.  Look, we can see it already!”

Tsunku pointed forward.  Aichan squinted, as a dot appeared on the horizon.  The small boat sped forward, packed with video production crew.

Aichan sighed.  Tsunku did have a point.  Even if the island wasn’t as beautiful as the locals claimed, it would be one last restful diversion before she had to return to the hectic pace of Tokyo.

Part 2

“Girls, gather around the television.  Hurry!” shouted out Hitomi Yoshizawa

The girls excitedly gathered around Yossie.  “This is serious.  Pay attention,” said the leader of Morning Musume.

An anchorman spoke in a grave tone.  “The Indian military entered a state of high readiness after the mysterious disappearance of the Amphibious Transport Dock Jalashva off the Gulf of Mannar.  There were rallies in several Indian cities against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, commonly known as Tamil Tigers, who some accused of playing a role in the disappearance of the Indian Navy’s new ship.  Spokesmen of the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers denied any involvement.  Massive deposits of depleted uranium, widely used in armour piercing munitions, were found off on the coastline of Sri Lanka.  The Indian Navy denied that the Jalashva had been carrying a Maritime Commando Force…”

Yossie snapped off the television.  “Girls, you see how close the world is to war.  You see how important it is to sincerely care for others.  The only thing that can save mankind is an understanding that we’re all part of something greater than us.  Now go out there and sing this encore with that spirit of love and peace in your hearts!” she screamed.

The girls ran to the stage to the roar of the crowd.  The words of the song Dekkai Uchuu ni Ai ga Garu took new meaning in their hearts.

 “Instead of criticizing someone
Instead of tears overflowing
Let's love ourselves

It exists in this great, great universe
Within this round, round earth
A teeny, teeny bit of consideration
That becomes a great, great love…”

Meanwhile… Off the Andaman Coast of Thailand

“This was such a great idea.  I’m sorry I ever doubted you!” exclaimed Ai Takahashi as she leaned back on a coconut tree.

“After all these years, you should know that I have an instinct for these things,” said Tsunku.  “Just look at this beautiful white sand beach.  This lush green forest just a stone's throw away.  Aichan, why don’t you move closer to the forest.  Near those beautiful flowers.”

Aichan walked over to forest on the beach’s edge.  She wore a bright red bikini, and she enjoyed the warmth of the tropical sun on her toned skin.  She stood next to the bush of colorful flowers looking at the camera crew that was standing on the beach.

She heard a loud rumbling from behind her.  She nearly jumped in surprise.  It was almost as if she were in Tokyo, and she was hearing an earthquake.  Another rumble followed soon afterwards, followed by yet another.

The camera crew was a buzz with alarm.  “Earthquake”, one man screamed.  “Could there be a tsunami?” screamed another.  The rumbling continued, getting louder and louder.  “Aichan, move into the forest!” someone cried.  Aichan trembled in fear as she stumbled into the thick forest.  The rumbling was so loud the trees next to her were shaking.

Suddenly, she saw a large dark shape reach out from the depths of the forest and violently drag her in.

The video crew looked into the forest with their jaws open in surprise.  “Did you just see what I saw?” whispered one man.  “The hand of a giant!” exclaimed another.  “Snatched her up like a little doll!” screamed another.  “It was dark and hairy, like a gorilla!  Are there gorillas in Thailand?!”  Finally, Tsunku screamed out, “Who has the satellite phone?  I think we need to get some help…”

That scene with Ai-chan being captured sounds very familiar, like the scene out of the King Kong movies, with Kong capturing a slave girl.

so will this be like that :D

Part 3
Off the Andaman Coast of Thailand

Ai Takahashi saw the forest landscape moving past in a blur, as she was wrapped in a tight embrace.  She tried to turn her head to see what was holding her, but her eyes deceived her.  They told her that she was being carried by a giant gorilla, one that was easily as tall as the giant trees that towered over the island rainforest.  “I’m dehydrated and hallucinating,” she told herself.  “Very soon, somebody is going to splash water on my face, and I’ll recover and this will all end like a bad dream.”

But the nightmare refused to end.  With every step forward, the giant ape made the earth beneath it tremble.  As the ape’s arms swayed back and forth, Aichan felt nausea overwhelm her.  She passed out.  The last thought in her mind was a prayer that this nightmare would end soon.

Meanwhile, on the beach…

“That’s exactly right, I want an empty transport vessel.  And marines!  A company of them,” screamed Tsunku into his satellite phone.  “What do you mean, you can’t get me any marines?  Doesn’t the Thai military have any troops?  Fine, get me some mercenaries then...  I don’t care how much it’ll cost!  Blackwater… they’re in Iraq, too, right?  Fine, DynCorp as well then.  Yeah, the South Africans, too.  Just get them here, ASAP!”  Tsunku snapped the satellite phone shut.

“What do we do in the meantime, boss?” asked a member of the frightened video crew.

“We sit… and wait… and pray,” said Tsunku.

On a remote mountain top

Aichan awoke.  She felt a chill wind blow on her.  As she raised herself up, she saw that she was on a ledge on a high cliff.  A verdant green forest spread far beneath her.  As she stretched her aching arms, she wondered when this nightmare would end.  She turned around.

In front of her, blocking the entrance to a gigantic cave, was a giant gorilla.  It sat down on its haunches gazing at her.  She cowered back in shock and fear.  Sensing her emotions, the giant ape let out a loud roar.  The gust of air hit her like a typhoon, sending her falling back onto her behind.  Suddenly, the roar ceased and giant ape smiled.  It pointed to the young idol in her bright red bikini, and laughed.

Aichan flushed.  “That’s not very nice!” she screamed.  “First you kidnap me from my friends.  Then you make me fall on my ass.  Then you make fun of me!  Didn’t your momma ever teach you any manners, you big… you big ape!”

Aichan raised herself up and kicked the giant gorilla on the shin.  Her foot got lost in its thick black hair.  The gorilla laughed even harder.  Enraged, Aichan grabbed at tufts of the ape’s thick hair and pulled with all her might.

The ape let out a sigh, and pulled her away.  It then turned around and lay down on its side.  One giant finger pointed to its back.  “What?  What is this?” Aichan asked, confused.

The giant gorilla gently pulled at the hair on its back.  “You… you want me to groom you?!” exclaimed Aichan.  Not knowing what else to do, Aichan combed the thick long hairs of the giant ape’s back, as the ape let out sighs of pleasure.

Presently, the ape got up and went to the back of the cave.  It came out carrying a handful of several hundred coconuts and bananas.  “Ahh, food!” exclaimed the young model.  The ape dropped the fruits in front of her.

“I’m sorry I called you an ill mannered ape.  You’re actually quite considerate,” said Aichan, as she peeled a banana and took a bite.

Suddenly, she heard a loud piercing shriek from the sky.  She looked up and saw a pair of giant wings coming distressingly closer.

Part 4

The giant ape quickly dragged her to the back of the cave.  “Be careful!” she screamed.  She couldn’t believe how large the wings of the giant bird were – they were already covering the mouth of the cave in shade.  As she looked up from the safety of a nook deep inside the cave, she saw what looked like a giant dragon with three heads approach with frightening speed.

The giant ape let out a loud battle cry and jumped up.  Aichan was shocked at how high it could jump.  The ape’s fist collided with one of the necks of the giant creature, as they locked in mid-air battle.  But the flying creature could not keep aloft with the weight of the giant ape on it, and it soon struggled with its massive leathery wings to stay in flight.  The giant ape took the opportunity locked both of its hands onto two throats of the creature.  The third throat of the flying dragon was locked tight within the legs of the giant ape in a vicious gogoplata choke.  The dragon soon lost conciousness and crashed into the rocky face of the cliff.  Aichan ran to the edge of the cliff, just in time to see the duo tumbling down to the base of the mountain.

Aichan ran to the back of the cave in tears.  She was stuck on the edge of a high cliff, wearing only her red bikini.  She was separated from her friends in the video crew on an island full of dangerous giant monsters.  How would she ever survive!

Presently, she heard a rumbling from the edge of the cliff.  As she walked over, she suddenly saw a large dark hand reach over.  Soon, the body of the giant ape cleared the cliff’s edge.  It slowly made its way to the back of the cave.  Aichan saw that there were several bloody wounds on its body.  “You’re hurt,” she whispered.  “And you fought that giant three-headed dragon, just to protect me!” she exclaimed.  She looked over at the pile of bananas and reached for one.  She pealed a banana, and gave it to the giant ape.  The giant ape chuckled and reached for the banana.  Although it was large compared to the bananas she saw in Japan, the banana was less than the size of the giant ape’s thumbnail.

She grabbed several bunches of bananas and nestled on the giant ape’s lap.  The ape let out a content sigh as she pealed bananas for it.  In the warmth of the giant ape’s lap, she soon fell asleep.

When she woke up the next day, the first thing she saw were the large eyes of the giant ape looking at her.  In all her years as an idol, she had never seen anybody looking at her so intently.  She flushed in embarrassment.

“You’ve been on this island your entire life, haven’t you?  You must be lonely.  When I get lonely, I think of my family back on in my hometown of Fukui.  Let me sing you a song about hometowns.  It’s called Furusato.  It’s one of my favorite songs.

"Living alone in Tokyo
Mom's kindness permeated my heart
Because I was alone in Tokyo
I was able to fall in love with him
It was an unrequited love, is it okay if I cry?

"Next vacation
I'm gonna go back home for a bit
I've had fun days because he was there
Love is wonderful
I wasn't lonely at all.”

The giant ape gently stroked her hair and looked down at her with kindness in his eyes.

Suddenly, she heard a noise in the distance.  “What is it this time?” she exclaimed looking outside the cave.  In the distance, she saw several large objects approaching.  The giant ape grabbed her and pushed her to the back of the cave.  “Be careful!” she screamed.

The giant ape walked over to the edge of the cliff and let out a loud battle cry.  Looking from behind a corner of the cave, she suddenly realized what the objects were: helicopters!  She ran out, waving her arms.  The ape looked back at her in confusion.

“Don’t worry, those were probably sent by my friends.  They’re hear to rescue me!  Don’t worry, they wont hurt you.”  The black helicopters approached the cliff face.  Suddenly, she saw flashes come from the undercarriages of the helicopters.  Almost immediately later, she heard loud thumps as something hit the body of the giant ape.  It cried out in pain and anger.

“What… no, stop!” she cried at the helicopters.  “Don’t hurt him, he’s my friend!  He hasn’t harmed me!” she screamed in tears.  The giant ape let out one final roar of anger and collapsed.  A helicopter approached, and let down a rope ladder.  Aichan angrily climbed up.  When was safely on the helicopter, she walked over to the first person that she saw and punched him in the face.  “Sedate her!” were the last words she remembered hearing.

Part 5
Tokyo
Aichan awoke to a raging headache.  She let out a loud moan.  Was she finally awake from that horrible nightmare?

She felt a gently touch on her shoulder.  A familiar voice said, “Aichan, you’re finally awake!  You don’t know how much we worried about you.  You were unconscious for the entire medevac from Thailand.  We thought you were in a coma!”  It was the voice of Risa Niigaki, one of her closest friends in Morning Musume.

“How long was I out?” Aichan asked as she looked around her hospital room.

“Over a week!” exclaimed Risa.  “They shot you with the same tranquilizer that they used on that giant ape.”

“Oh, so it wasn’t a nightmare…” Aichan said.

“No it wasn’t.  Tsunku is very excited about it!  He wants to turn it into a member of Hello! Project.  He says that with the world on the brink of war, he needs to create an idol that can show people how even the most dangerous looking beasts can be made entertaining,” explained Risa.

“What?  That’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of,” said Aichan.

“Yeah, that’s what everybody else said too.  But Tsunku just said that he’s never been wrong.  He said that if he could turn a bunch of no-name teenage girls into the biggest idol group in history, he could also turn a giant ape into a world-famous entertainer as well.”

Aichan shook her head.  “And what’s this you say about the world being on the brink of a war?” she asked.

“Things have gotten really scary since you went to Thailand for that video shoot!” exclaimed Risa.  A few days ago, a couple of Chinese battleships went missing in the Straits, and the Chinese government claims that the Taiwanese are to blame!  They say that they have a thousand ballistic missiles armed and aimed at Taiwan, and are warning the US from getting involved.

“And just yesterday, the North Koreans claimed that one of their frigates disappeared in their own territorial waters.  They’ve threatened to invade the South with a million man army, and to launch ballistic missiles onto the Japanese Home Islands.  The world has truly gone mad, Aichan!”

Aichan let out a sigh.  “Well, at this stage, there’s probably little we can do about that…  What have they done to the giant ape?” she asked.

“You mean Kong?  That’s what Tsunku called it.  He said it was Thai for ‘echo’, because it was so heavy that it’s footsteps made a loud echo.  It’s being kept in a special cell in the Ueno Zoo.  I saw it – you must have been very scared, Aichan!  It looks very cruel and fierce.”

”He was NOT cruel!” cried Aichan.  “He was kind and considerate, and brought me bananas and coconuts to eat.  He even bravely protected me from the other monsters on that island.  Risa, help me get up and out of this hospital bed.  I need to make sure that Kong is all right!”

Warning, in the next chapter, Godzilla makes his first appearance on land.  Things start very very violent very soon.
Title: Re: Morning Musume vs. Godzilla (Part 5: Landfall)

Part 6: Landfall
Ueno Zoo, Tokyo

Aichan heard Kong’s screams even before she entered Ueno Zoo.  The screams told of anguish, shock, and outrage, and tears of sorrow ran down Aichan’s face as she ran in the direction of Kong’s voice.  She arrived at what seemed like a former tiger pit.  A large group of tourists was crowded along the edge of the pit.  Inside the pit, chained to a large tall wall, stood Kong, his arms and legs chained.  She could see that his hair, which had been lustrous and thick on the island, was matted and dull.  Tear marks stained his face, and the chains had rubbed his wrists and ankles raw.

Outraged, Aichan scaled the edge of the pit and quickly climbed down.  The crowd of onlookers pointed to her in shock.  Presently, she made it to the bottom of the pit and ran over to Kong.  The giant ape recognized her and stopped his screams of anguish.  Suddenly, a zoo keeper ran out and nearly tackled Aichan before she could reach Kong.  Aichan deftly sidestepped him and gave him a hard kick in the shin.  She made her way to Kong and jumped up to hug his leg.  The crowd let out a loud gasp of surprise.

“Kong, what have they done to you?  I’m so sorry!  It breaks my heart to see you in such pain.  Don’t worry, I wont let Tsunku turn you into some circus show freak.  You’re a kind ape, and I’ll make sure that you are returned to Thailand and have all the bananas you can eat,” she said.

“Ma’am, please let go of it!” cried the zookeeper.  “The beast is very dangerous.”

“Kong is a ‘he’, not an ‘it’!” screamed Aichan in anger.  “He is a sentient being, kind and gentle.  He saved my life, you know…  Hey, what’s going on?”

From the pit’s edge, the tourists' mobile phones rang almost in unison.  As the tourists picked up their phones, looks of shock and disbelief came to their faces.  One by one, the tourists rapidly walked away from the pit.

Aichan’s mobile phone rang.  She jumped down from Kong’s foot and picked up the call.  It was her mother, but she was hysterical and nearly incomprehensible.

“Mom, mom, slow down!  Get a grip.  Now tell me slowly what’s wrong,” Aichan asked.

“I can’t explain it, Aichan.  Just get to a television, as quickly as you can.  It’s beyond belief.  It’s as if the wrath of God has descended upon Okinawa,” Aichan’s mother said.

The zookeeper’s phone had also rang, and he was also engaged in an animated discussion.  When he was finished, Aichan asked, “Is there a television set around here?”

“Yes, there’s one in the tourist center,” he answered.  “I’m about to go there as well.  Something about a horrible natural disaster in Okinawa.”

“Kong, I’m going to go for a moment,” Aichan said, looking up at the giant ape.  “I promise I’ll be right back!”  Kong responded with a knowing nod and a look of concern.

Aichan and the zookeeper ran to the tourist center.  In front of a large television, a large anxious crowd had assembled.  Aichan saw that many in the crowd had tears in their eyes, and several had fainted.

“This is live video footage from a helicopter outside of Naha City, the capital of Okinawa .  I repeat, this is not a movie or a prank,” said the somber voice of a television anchorman.

The television showed a picture of a burnt black wasteland from sea to horizon.  It was not even recognizable as a scene from Earth.  It was difficult to judge the scale of the images, but it seemed as nothing stood on the entire surface of the land other than black ash.

“Less than 10 minutes ago, we received local reports from Naha of a giant being or object rising from the sea,” the anchor continued.  “The descriptions we received of the being varied dramatically.  Some said that it was as fierce as a rabid gorilla.  Others said it was large as a kujira whale.  Others have said that it looked vaguely like a dinosaur of unspecified type.  The only recorded evidence we have received so far of this phenomena, which we are tentatively calling ‘go-jira,’ is the short audio clip.”

A roar came from the television loudspeaker.  Goodbumps came over Aichan’s body and she tasted bile in her throat.  A few people in the crowd fainted.  It was like no roar of any animal Aichan had ever heard before.  It was like the screaming of a thousand tormented souls.  It was like the sound of the end of the world.

The anchor continued.  “Within minutes of receiving the reports, all communications from the city ceased.  Naha City has a population of 300,000…”

Aichan felt an emptiness within her.  300,000 people had turned into ash within 10 minutes.  It was a number beyond comprehension.  She remembered that thousands of people had died at the World Trade Center, and how she had cried all night long for their souls.  But this was beyond belief.  She tried to cry, but instead of feeling sorrow, she was overcome by dread.  She tried to remember whether she knew anybody from Okinawa.  What was happening?  Was this really the wrath of God?  The 300,000 people of Naha – were they transported to heaven in a rapture?

After a moment, the anchor continued in a hushed tone.  “Our news desk has learned that all communications from the city of Urasue, population 100,000, have also ceased.  Urasue lies directly northeast of Naha City.  It would appear that the Gojira phenomenon is moving to the Northeast.  We have received no comment from the government at this time...”

Aichan turned around and took several deep breaths.  She tried not to vomit.  She slowly walked back to the pit that contained Kong.  She hugged the giant ape’s ankle.  Despite the death and tragedy, tears refused to come to her eyes.  “Kong, something bad is happening,” she said.  The ape let out a deep purr of concern.  “If this really is the wrath of God, and the world is coming to an end, then I hope when it is your turn, you go to Heaven.  You’re a kind ape, and you saved my life.”

She jumped down.  “Kong, I have to go now.  I need to be with my friends,” she said.  “I  need to be there for them.  I promise I’ll be back to see you again tomorrow.  If there is a tomorrow.  Bye bye, Kong!”

Part 6: Landfall
A roar came from the television loudspeaker.  Goodbumps came over Aichan’s body and she tasted bile in her throat.  A few people in the crowd fainted.  It was like no roar of any animal Aichan had ever heard before.  It was like the screaming of a thousand tormented souls.  It was like the sound of the end of the world.

WOW, I never really knew how to describe how Godzillas roar sounded like, well I knew, but I couldn't put it into words that would make sense. But you did it BRILLIANTLY!!.

Part 7
NHK Studios, Tokyo

The girls of Morning Musume stood gathered in front of a television monitor.  The atmosphere was hushed and somber, and the girls were all dressed in black.

The anchorperson spoke.  “Ladies and gentlemen, the Prime Minister of Japan will now address the nation.”  The image changed to that of the Prime Minister.  He looked a hundred years old.

“Good evening. This afternoon, the island of Okinawa came under attack by a giant monster from the sea.  The victims were in their homes, in their offices, in their farms; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and government workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Countless lives were suddenly ended by an evil, despicable monster.

“The exact nature of this monster is not yet fully understood.  Dubbed Gojira by the media, it appears to be a hybrid of several types of dinosaur.  Our neighboring countries claim no knowledge of its origins, although it might have been involved in the disappearance of several vessels in the world’s oceans over the past weeks.  It is capable of emitting blasts of horrendous energy, several times hotter than the surface of the sun.  When it entered Ginowan City, it came under attack by the US Marines stationed there.  It destroyed the entire force within seconds.  It later made its way to Okinawa City and turned that city to ash within minutes.  A coordinated air attack from the US Airbase in Kadena had no effect on the monster.

“It is estimated that today, the entire population of Okinawa, over one million people, was killed.”  The Prime Minister gave a long pause.  Sayumi let out a whimper and was given a hug by Koharu.  “Among those dead were members of the Japan Self-Defence Force and soldiers of the US armed forces.  Their brave sacrifice will be remembered for as long of Japanese people walk the earth.”

“SDF intelligence has revealed that Gojira is still on the island of Okinawa, but is headed in the direction of the Home Islands of Japan.”  Risa burst into tears.  Aichan squeezed her hand and put an arm over her shoulder.

“After consulting with the Emperor of Japan, the Minister of Defence, the leaders of the People’s Republic of China, North Korea, South Korea, Russia, the United States of America, and the General Secretary of the United Nations, I have requested that the US military explode a nuclear device on the monster in order to prevent it from invading the Home Islands.”  The girls let out a loud gasp.  The Prime Minister continued, “As I speak, an ballistic missile with a nuclear warhead is in flight towards the ashes of the Okinawa.”

“Today’s tragedy has filled the people of the world with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger.  The world is strong and united in the defence of the islands of Japan.  Nippon Banzai.”

The picture cut to the anchorman.  “The members of Morning Musume will now sing a Requiem for the people of Okinawa.”

The girls sang together, their voices at first wavering with emotion, but soon united in strength.

...Sweet god, grant them rest; grant them rest eternal... God, have mercy; have mercy on us…

Part 5“They shot you with the same tranquilizer that they used on that giant ape.”

Considering what the PM revealed in his speech, one would think that there must be some visuals of Gojira (or at least some artist renditions) that the media would have put forward by now.  Launching a nuke is a risky venture. Don't really know if it'll work, for one thing. Also have to be mindful of nuclear fallout and how the radiation may/will spread and affect the neighbouring areas. Let's hope they're not being rash in their actions.

Title: Morning Musume vs. Godzilla (Part 8: Kyushu)

Part 8: Kyushu
Aichan’s apartment, Tokyo
Aichan woke that next morning in a daze.  She remembered little of her dreams, other than that they were filled with fire and destruction.  Although the room was warm, she woke up shivering.  She turned on the television.

“Half an hour ago, Gojira made landfall near the city of Kagoshima on the island of Kyushu.  As you can see from these satellite images, the giant monster appears to have been completely unaffected by the 3 megaton nuclear device exploded on it last night.” The image that appeared on the screen seemed to have the body of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, the back plates of a Stegosaurus, and the arms of an Iguanodon.

“Gojira has already destroyed the city of Kagoshima and its population of 2 million.”  Aichan rushed to the bathroom and vomited.  A feeling of horror overwhelmed her, but for some reason, she couldn't cry.  She cleaned herself up, but then abruptly remembered that Risa Niigaki came from Kagoshima.  Her parents lived with her in Tokyo, but she probably still had friends and family in the ruined city.  She called her friend up, but nobody answered the phone.  After several unsuccessful attempts to get through, Aichan returned to the television.

“The government has refused to comment on rumors that a massive nuclear strike will occur on Kyushu, which has a population of 14 million people.  In the meantime, Pope Benedict XVI in Rome has officially identified the monster the spawn of Satan, and has declared that any person who dies while trying to destroy it will receive full indulgence for all past sins.  Likewise, the Grand Ayatollah of Iran declared Lesser Jihad, or holy war, on the monster.  In Dharmasala, the 14th Dalai Lama has declared that destruction of the monster would not be considered a sin.

“Meanwhile, a local cult called the Aum Shinri Gojira Kyu has been established.  Here is Shoko Jigokuryu, the leader of the cult.”  The camera cut to a man with long hair and fiery eyes.  His voice was deep and powerful.

“Fear not!  Gojira is not an instrument of Satan, but the herald of God.  He is here to punish humans for our sins. Repent now, and you will find eternal life within the Eater of Souls!  Sacrifice that which you hold dearest to His holy fire.  Aum Shinri Gojira Kyu will offer the purest young virgins to appease God’s wrath…”

Aichan snapped off the television in disgust.  She quickly dressed and left her apartment.  The streets were eerily empty and she had a hard time finding a cab.  Ueno Zoo was also largely empty.  The pit that contained Kong, which yesterday had been surrounded with excited tourists, was also quiet.  Aichan climbed down and approached Kong.  He was lying on his side and seemed listless.  A large pile of bananas was left untouched near by.

The arrival of Aichan perked him up.  She gave him a hug.  The wounds on his ankles and wrists seemed to have healed up very quickly.  “How are you doing today?” she asked.  “It’s funny, isn’t it – yesterday I wasn’t sure if there would be a today.  I guess any day when we can wake up and see the faces of others, see there smiles, see the sun shining – that would be a good day.”

She walked over to the piles of bananas.  “You’ve been a naughty boy.  You haven’t touched your food at all!  Here, let me peel them for you.”  She peeled the bananas one by one and threw them into Kong’s mouth.  A smile came over Kong’s face.

“You like singing, don’t you?  Let me sing you a song.”  She sang what was normally a exciting pop song as a slow soft ballad.

Every day, every night
In the middle of love
Every day, every night
That's all we wish today!

Hero! Here we go!
It's time now! Let's go
You'll, somehow
Succeed mankind.

Aichan abruptly stopped.  The air had suddenly gone chilly.  She looked up.  A large flock of birds was flying northeast.  Suddenly, an immensely loud boom resounded over the zoo. Windows throughout the zoo shattered simultaneously.  A typhoon-like gust of wind hit, sending Aichan sprawling into Kong’s thick fur.  Kong let out a loud roar of surprise.

Minutes later, the wind had yet to relent.  Suddenly, the earth shuddered underneath them.  The shaking seemed to last forever.  Presently, Aichan picked herself up.  Tears were in her eyes.  Kong looked at her with concern.

Sobbing uncontrollably, she said, “It looks like they’ve nuked Kyushu…”

She hugged Kong’s chest with all her might.  At last, she was able to cry.  She wondered how many liters of tears would have to be shed for the souls of the millions of Okinawa and tens of millions of Kyushu to be appeased.

She wondered whether she would soon be joining them.

For some reason, I'm thinking back to the movie Contact and the religious fanatic played by Jake Busey.  Something tells me we (and especially Aichan) haven't heard the last of him.

 Part 9: God’s Wrath
Aichan’s apartment

Aichan made her way back to her apartment.  The sky was the color of muddy ice, even though it was still daytime.  Aftershocks shook the streets.  Along the way, she saw smoking buildings and bodies in the empty streets, the remains of people who had tossed themselves from their buildings in order to escape Gojira, the Wrath of God.

She hesitated to turn on the television when she got home.  But finally, she couldn’t resist the urge.  A news anchor spoke with a grim face.  “… the shockwave of the explosion is reported to have broken windows as far south as Darwin, in the north of Australia, and as far east as San Francisco, on the West Coast of the US.  The evacuation of western Shikoku and Honshu continues, but is hampered by the kilometer-tall megatsunami caused by the collapse of the Kyushu coastline into the Inland Sea.  Reports of radiation sickness are currently inconclusive, although they are soon expected to rise.

"The multinational Gojira Defense Force detonated nearly 70,000 megatons of nuclear devices on Kyushu, the equivalent of over 5 million Hiroshima bombs.  The explosions caused seismic activity along the entire Pacific Ring of Fire to skyrocket.  Airborne and satellite surveillance have not yet conclusively shown whether the monster Gojira survived the attack.  It is estimated that the entire population of Kyushu, approximately 15 million people, was killed today…”

Some background footnotes to the story so far:

 - The scenes in Thailand are based very closely on King Kong, with Tsunku based on Carl Denham and Ai Takahashi based on Ann Darrow.  The companies that Tsunku calls to help retrieve Aichan are the names of real life private military companies (mercenaries).  The timing was such that the idol video that Aichan is filming is "Aichan in Thailand."  The crew fears a tsunami because a massive tsunami really did hit the Andaman Coast several years ago.

 - In the grand tradition of Godzilla movies, I haven't revealed the precise origins of the Beast, other than that depleted uranium had something to deal with it.

 - The scene around the pit in the zoo is based on the movie The Siege (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133952/), where everybody's cell phone rings at practically the same time.

 - The US airbase on Okinawa is the largest American airbase in Asia.  It is only part of the US military's massive military presence in Okinawa.  Gojira's destruction of the island in just a single day was a testiment to his unimaginable power.

 - Aichan's reaction to Okinawa and Kyushu was based on my own reaction to 9/11.

 - The Prime Minister's address to the nation is based very closely (in some sentences, word for word) on President Bush's address to the nation on 9/11 (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/09/20010911-16.html).

 - Nippon Banzai roughly means "may Japan last a thousand years."  A WWII slogan, but it seemed appropriate.

 - The Okinawa Requiem is adapted from Pie Jesu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie_Jesu) and Kyrie Eleison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyrie_Eleison).  It is based on a personal experience: on the afternoon of 9/11, the MIT community assembled together in the grassy lawn in front of the Great Dome, while the MIT Symphony Orchestra played a requiem.

- The Pope's indulgance isn't to far fetched.  Pope Alexander II blessed the Iberians in the First Crusade, and gave an indulgence to those who were killed in battle.  The reaction of the Ayatollah is based on a very scary scene from A Coldest War (http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/stories/colderwar.htm) by Charlie Stross.  The pacifism of the current Dalai Lama is a modernism - previous Dalai Lamas often led armies and engaged in bloody wars.  The unity of human religions in the face of Gojira is based on a scene from The Second Renaissance, part of The Animatrix.

 - Shoko Jigokuryu's spiel is based on the Church of the Final Atonement's treatment of the Shrike in the Hyperion Cantos.  His views will be explored in greater detail in a later chapter.  Jigokuryu means Hell Dragon.  The "eternal life in the eater of souls" line is taken shamelessly from A Colder War.

 - The "kilometer-tall megatsunami" is a scientific possibility.  Normal earthquake-induced tsunamis are at most a dozen meters tall.  But a landslide within an enclosed space (e.g., Japan's Inland Sea) can cause tsunamis taller than the tallest buildings.  The southeast coast of Hiroshima and the west coast of Shikoku were cleansed to the bedrock in the aftermath of the nuking of Kyushu.

 - As of 2006, the US and Russia had a combined nuclear stockpile of about 25,000 warheads.  A typical modern warhead on a Trident or Minuteman missile has a yield of 1-4 megatons.  So the nuking of Kyushu used a significant percentage of humanity's nuclear stockpile.  That's how serious the Gojira threat was.  For comparison, the Hiroshima bomb had a yield of about 20 kilotons.  A 1 megaton blast will flatten an area the size of New York's Central Park.  The effect of 70,000 megatons of TNT on Kyushu is simply unamaginable.

Part 10: NERV
Hello! Project headquarters

“It isn’t everyday that I meet an officer of the Japan Self Defence Force, let alone the… ah.. NERV.  How can I help you, Captain Ikari?” asked Tsunku.

The officer had a grave look over his face.  Curtly, he said, “Forgive me if I dispense with the trivialities.  In short, the monster Gojira survived the nuking of Kyushu.”

Rika Ishikawa, Yui Okada, and Erika Miyoshi, the three members of Viyuden, gave a gasp.  Tsunku turned grey.

The officer continued.  “Nukes appear to be useless against the Beast.  The last hope of humanity lies is in a weapons program that the SDF has been secretly been developing for the past decade.  The weapons are called the EVAs – short for Extropian Vehicle/Assault.  Basically giant bipedal robots, fused with human pilots, controlling assault weapons of a classified nature.”

Ikari continued.  “For reasons which I can not communicate at this time, three of the six EVA vehicles were specifically designed to accommodate you three ladies.”  The girls eyes’ opened wide in surprise.  “It goes without saying that your role must be carried out with utmost secrecy,” he continued.

Rika took a deep breath and looked at the grim faces of her two friends.  After a while, they nodded to her.  She closed her eyes and lowered her head.  Finally, she looked at Captain Ikari.  “Please, let us do that,” she said, her voice wavering.

“We are… we are willing to sacrifice our lives for our nation,” she continued.  “But could you clarify the situation?  What do you mean by ‘fusing’ human pilots with the robots?  And we’re just singers and dancers, not fighters – we know nothing about piloting giant robots.”

The officer nodded.  “I’ll answer your questions as well as I can when we arrive at EVA project headquarters in Hakone.  However, be aware that some of your questions might not be answerable due to concerns with national security.”

The girls stood up together.  With a look of determination, Yui said, “Let’s go then!”

Part 11: EVA
NERV Headquarters, deep underneath Hakone

The girls stepped on to a steel platform, where they met three tall men.

“Hey, you’re Yoshida, the Olympic Judo champion, aren’t you?” asked Rika.

“Yes I am.  Hidehiko Yoshida, nice to meet you,” said a grim faced man.

“I’m Kazayuki Fujita, nice to meet you as well.  I really liked ‘Aisucream to my Pudding’, by the way,” said a tall man.  He was wearing a modern sports jacket, but over his waist he wore an intricately stitched belt of red cloth.  Rika recognized it from numerous war movies – it was a Senninbari, a thousand stitch belt, woven by the mothers and sisters of kamikaze pilots during the Pacific War.

“I’m Kazushi Sakuraba.  Rika, I’ve been a fan of you since you were a little girl.  It’s great to be able to finally meet you,” said kind looking man with a smile.

“Nice to meet you as well,” said the girls in unison.  Erika Miyoshi said, “Captain Ikari said that there were 6 robots – so I guess you’ll be piloting the other three?”

“I guess so, although the only robots I’ve piloted are in video games.  I really don’t understand why they chose me,” said Sakuraba.

The metal platform they were standing on rumbled and moved forward.  It made its way into a large cavern-like space.  The 6 young men and women on the platform let out a loud gasp when they saw what was housed on one end of the facility: a giant purple-colored human-shaped robot.

Standing in the middle of the cavern was Captain Ikari.  His voice echoed throughout the space.  “What you see before you is EVA-01.  It was one of the first biomechanical products of the EVA program.  The EVA program wasn’t originally conceived to defend mankind against Gojira, but it is now the last hope of humanity.

Rika spoke up.  “So what was the original purpose of the EVAs?” she asked.

Ikari gave her a stern look, and said, “That is none of your concern.”

He continued, “As an EVA pilot, you will interface mentally and physically with your vehicles.  The biomechanical intelligence of the vehicle will work with you.  You provide the will, the inspiration, and the objective, and the EVA will provide the precise control.”

He looked at the three men.  “Make no mistake – although your fighting ability is great, your will and fighting spirit are even greater.”

He looked at the girls.  “The voices of you girls have inspired millions.  You must work with your EVA, inspire it, and you might have a chance at saving humanity.”

Ikari pointed at a crate next to him.  “Inside that crate are your uniforms, which have been specifically designed to interface with your vehicles.  They require a skin-tight fit in order to work properly, so you must not wear any undergarments.”

He looked grimly at Fujita’s waist.  “Those of you wearing thousand-stitch belts may bring them with you into your vehicles.  Change into your uniforms now.  You’re names are printed on each them.  Then proceed to your vehicle - the other five vehicles are in the garages next door.”

“Where are the changing rooms?” asked Rika.

Ikari raised an eyebrow.  “You’re all adults.  Just change right here,” he said.

Yoshida rushed to the crate and took out three uniforms.  He gave the uniforms to his two fellow fighters and joined them in turning his face away from the girls.  Relieved, the girls took out the remaining uniforms and quickly changed.  Each uniform had a number on it, from 1 to 6, and each was a different color.  The girls found that uniforms weren’t skin-tight at all.  They were in fact quite loose.  When they were finished, they turned around.

Suddenly, their suits emitted a sucking sound, and the suits shrunk to become skin-tight.  The girls covered their crotches and breasts in embarrassment.  The men quickly turned their faces and walked to their vehicles.

Yui whispered to Erika as they walked to their EVAs.  “This suit is jammed all the way up my ass!” she said.

“It makes your breasts look great though,” said Erika.  “But just look at the camel toe my suit is giving me,” she whispered.

Next to each vehicle was a steel platform.  Rika stepped onto her platform, and it automatically rose to the level of the vehicle’s head.  She saw an opening on it’s head and crawled in.  Inside was a comfortable couch.  She sat down.  Suddenly, the opening clanged shut.  Before she knew it, a clear colorless liquid quickly seeped into the chamber.

“Help!” Rika screamed.  “There’s a leak here!”  She stood up on her couch, but soon the liquid had reached her chin.  She panicked and was soon under the liquid.  It seemed to seep into her suit, enveloping her in a slick warmth.  She held her breath as long as possible, until she finally had to let go.  Feeling the corners of her vision go dark, she gasped the liquid into her lungs.  It was painful at first, but she was soon surprised to learn that inhaling the liquid allowed her to breathe.  Once she got the hand of it, she almost forgot that she was swimming in warm liquid.

Presently, she heard a rumbling beneath her.  She realized that the entire garage was an elevator and she was being raised to the surface.  She heard a voice in the back of her head saying, “leaving… home….”  Rika gasped.  It was like the memory of a memory of a voice long forgotten.  Was this the biomechanical intelligence of her EVA that Captain Ikari had talked of?

Presently, the roof of the cavern opened and she rose to the surface.  Standing next to her were the five other EVAs.  Somehow, she knew instantly who was in each EVA.

Rika heard Ikari’s voice in her head.  “Ishikawa’s EVA is armed with etorphine, an opiate 3,000 more powerful than morphine.  Miyoshi’s EVA is armed with tubocurarine, the most powerful muscle relaxant known to man.  Otada’s EVA is armed with a genetically engineered fast-acting version of the bubonic plague.  Sakuraba’s EVA is armed with the nerve gas Cyclosarin.  Fujita’s EVA is armed with a sulfur-based mustard gas blister agent.  And Yoshida’s EVA is armed with a the blood agent hydrogen cyanide.

“Each of your EVA’s contain enough biological and chemical agents to kill several hundred million people.  However, since you’ll be fighting in a barren zone, there will be little chance that your weapons will infect anybody but the Beast.  Your EVAs are programmed with his last known location.  Now go, and may God be in his heaven, and all be right with the world.”

Rockets in the feet of the EVAs exploded and the six were sent speeding southwest.  As they flew to their fates, the girls heard Yoshida’s voice in their heads.  “Girls, could you sing us a song?” he asked.

As the EVAs flew over Mount Fuji, the girls sang Issai Gassai Anata ni A-Ge-Ru, I'll Give Anything and Everything to You.

Actually, it's from Evangelion, and the liquid is LCL, the "blood of Lilith" that is used to mentally link pilot with their Evangelion and supply oxygen directly to the lungs when breathed.  Note that Ikari refuses to disclose the true purpose of the EVAs, so the Human Instrumentation Project/Marduk/Seele project might be going on in the background....

I don't know about the Mission to Mars reference.  The whole concept was probably inspired by the liquid breathing technology from The Abyss and the liquid G-force protection technology used in Joe Haldeman's "Forever War".

Note: the following chapters will get very very violent.  As if the death of 16 million people wasn't violent enough.

Part 12: First Blood
Over Tottori Perfecture

As the EVAs approached the west of Honshu, they saw a black stain on the horizon.  As they got closer, they realized with horror that the stain was actually Hiroshima Prefecture.  Every human being, every tree, every building, every hill in the entire prefecture had been turned into ash from the plasma breath of the monster.  From a distance, Gojira appeared like a small dot on the flat ashscape.  But when the EVAs approached, they realized that the monster would tower over the giant robots.

As they got even closer, they saw that the land underneath the monster wasn’t all ash.  It was actually rampaging over a small city, seemingly taking pleasure in destroying the city’s buildings by thrashing its large powerful tail.  The roads were packed with people panicking and trying to escape the monster’s wrath.

Sakuraba screamed. “We can’t use our biological or chemical weapons here!  We’ll kill all the people in the city!  We’ve got to somehow move it to a barren zone.”

Yoshida suggested, “Saku and I will distract it from the front.  You girls try to distract him from the sides.  Fujita, you grab it by the tail and try to swing it to the barren coast.  Let’s go!”

The EVAs split up, narrowly escaping a blast of Gojira’s plasma breath.

Rika and Erika closed in from the left, while Yui closed in from the right.  Fujita circled in from the rear, while Sakuraba attacked from the sky and Yoshida approached at high speed on the ground.  Rika grabbed Gojira by its stubby left arm, while Erika gave its massive left leg a drop kick.  Yui gave the monster a jab to the neck from the right.  The monster’s plates glowed, and Yoshida narrowly dodged a blast of plasma.  Yoshida grabbed the monster’s left leg, while Sakuraba gave a flying superman punch to the monster’s jaw.  At the same time, Fujita grabbed the monster by its mighty tail and slowly swung it around.  Gojira let out a roar of frustration as it was sent flying around in a circle.

Suddenly, it let loose a blast of plasma.  The plasma instantly disintegrated Sakuraba’s left arm.  The girls looked on in horror as a massive spurt of blood shot from the shoulder of the EVA.  Fujita let loose of the monster’s tail, sending it flying to the coast.  Erika screamed in near hysteria, “Sakuraba-san’s EVA is bleeding!  Captain Ikari said it was a robot – how can it bleed!  Saku-san, are you all right?”

“It was nothing, just a flesh wound,” Sakuraba answered with a grunt.  “Besides, I’m right handed.  Now let’s go and finish that bitch!  Sorry about that, girls… you know what I mean.”

Repeat after me: Godzilla is the bad guy in this story.  He's one mean mo'fo...

Warning!: This chapter contains scenes of extreme violence.  (Apologies to Tyler for his dinner...)

Part 13: Hiroshima
Over Hiroshima Perfecture

The EVAs gaves a silent prayer as they flew over the remains of Hiroshima.  Yoshida gave orders with a stern voice.  “The last attack went well.  Let’s do it again, except this time, Fujita - try to knock out Gojita’s plates.  The plates glow whenever it is about to emit a plasma blast.  Knocking out the plates might take out that weapon.  This time, we’re free to use our biological and chemical weapons.  Let’s go!  Nippon Banzai!”

They repeated their former strategy on the charred ashes that remained of Hiroshima City, attacking simultaneously from every direction.  Rika’s EVA threw a hard right hook at the monster, connecting at its neck.  A pump in her right hand injected torrents of etorphine into the monster.  Yui’s EVA bit the monster on the leg, sending rivers of pestilence into it.  Erika was less successful, as the monster gave her EVA a kick in the knee.

Fujita flew in from above and pumped nerve gas into the base of Gojira’s spine.  Sakuraba and Yoshida flew in a spiral, narrowly evading the monster’s plasma blast.  Yoshida gave it a stiff uppercut, sending mustard gas into its jaw, while Sakuraba gave it a low blow, ejecting mustard gas into the monster’s crotch.

Suddenly, the tide of the battle turned.  The monster’s long tail whipped around and caught Fujita’s EVA in the back.  It impaled him into the monster’s sharp plates.  The monster slammed its tail into Fujita again, this time connecting at his neck.  The other EVAs were shocked to see the head of Fujita’s EVA sliced clean off.

“Nooo!!!” screamed Rika, as she threw punch after punch into the monster’s neck.  The monster jumped up and threw it’s entire weight down on Fujita’s dismembered head.  Yui’s EVA flew back as she prepared to ram the monster.  Suddenly, it turned its head to her direction.  Its back plates glowed.  Sakuraba swerved around, screaming, “Yui, get out of the way!”

Saku’s body rammed into Yui’s at the moment Gojira let loose his plasma blast.  Saku knocked her out of the way of the white hot flame, but the flame hit him with full force.  The EVAs looked on in shock as the flame dissipated.  Sakuraba’s EVA was completely incinerated, leaving nothing except ashes floating in the sky.

The monster whipped its tail again, impaling its tip into the torso of Erika’s EVA. It’s back plates glowed again.  Yui attacked, trying to distract the monster from Erika.  The monster turned its face to her and blasted Yui with it’s plasma breath.  Yui swerved away, but the blast caught her legs and lower torso, completely disintegrating her lower half.  Her EVA crashed into the ground.

Rika threw blow after blow into the monster’s torso, injecting it with nearly all of her etorphine.  The monster seemed immune to all of the poisons.  She heard Yui scream in anguish, “I can’t feel my legs!”  Gojira thrashed Erika’s limp EVA into the ground and jumped up, crushing Yoshida’s torso and pinning him to the ground with its massive legs.

Yoshida let out a scream.  “Rika, Yui and Erika are still alive, but they can’t defend themselves any more.  Get them out of there, the battle is lost.  I’ll distract the monster.  Go, go now!” he ordered.

“Yoshida-san, I can’t leave you!” Rika screamed.

“You must, Rika,” said Yoshida.  “I’m done for.  Go now and save your friends.  Tell them I died fighting.  Nippon Banzai!”  Yoshida’s EVA grabbed hold of Gojira’s legs, trying to keep it from moving.

Rika grabbed Yui’s EVA and swerved around to recover Erika’s.  Meanwhile, the monster looked down in fury at Yoshida’s EVA.  To Rika’s horror, it bent down and opened its jaws wide.  The jaws closed down on the head of Yoshida’s EVA and, in a horrible twisting motion, it tore off the face-plate of the giant robot.

Rika screamed in horror as she flew away carrying Yui and Erika’s limp EVAs in each arm.  She couldn’t help but look back in terror to see the fate of Yoshida.  She saw blood spurting out of the face plate of Yoshida’s EVA.  Gojira let loose a roar as it bent down again to take another bite out of the biological robot.

Actually, there are two inspirations: the scene where 01 goes berserk and smashes 03's entry plug, and the scene where the creepy mass-produced EVAs (the ones with wings) gang up on Asuka's EVA and eat it.  The first scene was the most revolting thing I had ever seen - it made me smash my remote control against the wall.  The second scene nearly made me vomit.

No slip there  :D  Low blows aren't allowed in MMA, but against Gojira, it's old-school UFC 1 rules... with the additional of WMDs.

There's still one more chapter left in the EVA arc, before we head into another arc with new characters and a very different theme.

Part 14: End of Evangelion
NERV Headquarters

Rika woke up from a deep sleep.  She heard the beeps of a heart monitor and realized that she was in a hospital bed, surrounded by medical equipment.  The events of the last day came back to her like a whirlwind: the attack on Gojira, the death of Sakuraba and Fujita, the sacrifice of Yoshida as she beat a hasty retreat carrying her friends back to NERV Headquarters, her shock at realizing the true nature of the EVAs.  Tears swelled in her eyes as she remembered Erika’s limp body and Yui’s delirious screams of pain.  She struggled through her aches and pains to raise herself from the hospital bed.

The door opened.  Captain Ikari walked in and stood silently before her.  “How are Erika and Yui?” Rika asked, her voice wavering.  “Can I see them?”

Ikari looked straight at her, his face completely expressionless.  He slowly approached her and disconnected her IVs.  Not saying a word, he walked her over to another wing of the medical facility.  They approached an blank door.  “Yui underwent a massive psychosomatic shock when her EVA’s legs were destroyed.  She has lost use of her legs,” Ikari said.

Rika sobbed and lowered her head.  Presently, she recovered herself and opened the door.  Yui lay on a hospital bed bed, her lower body was covered by a bed sheet.  Her eyes were open but listless.  They tracked Rika as she rushed into the room and hugged Yui’s body.  “Yui…,” Rika whispered, overcome with sadness.

“I might never dance again…” Yui said, her voice cold and expressionless.

The two girls held each other, Rika sobbing, Yui silent.  Presently, Rika raised herself and brushed away a bang of Yui’s hair.  She bent down and gave her friend a soft kiss on the forehead.  Looking into Yui’s eyes, Rika whispered, “I’ll be here for you, Yui.  I’ll always be here for you.  But now I must see to Erika.”

Yui closed her eyes.  Rika walked out of the room.  Ikari had been waiting at the door.  They walked to another unlabeled door.  “Erika has suffered massive brain trauma.  She’s in a deep state of coma.  We’re closely monitoring her.  You may see her, but please keep it short,” said Ikari.

Rika grasped the door handle and took a deep breath.  She walked into the room.  Erika’s bed was surrounded by banks of medical monitoring devices.  Her forehead and right eye were swathed in gauze.  “Can she hear me?” Rika whispered.

“We haven’t been able to detect any significant brain activity,” Ikari said.  “But we can’t rule it out.  The human mind works in curious ways,” he added.

Rika walked to Erika’s beside and gently held Erika’s hand.  “Erika, if you can hear me… It’s Rika.  please don’t give up.  Please don’t give up,” she said. Rika walked out of the room.

“Was it worth it!?” Rika said once the door to Erika’s room was closed.  She tried to channel her sadness into fury, but couldn’t stop from sobbing.  “Was it worth the lies you told us?  Was it worth the lives destroyed?”

“Would you rather have sat aside doing nothing?” Ikari asked coldly.  “Why don’t you ask that question to yourself.  Why don’t you return to your room and continue your recovery.”

Rika let out a wail of frustration and anger.  In fury, she wrapped her hands around Ikari’s neck.  Ikari’s expression somehow remained revoltingly cold.  He slowly raised his right hand and stroked Rika’s check.  A look entered his eyes, halfway between sympathy and disgust.

Rika threw herself away.  She put her face in her hands and sobbed.

Disgusting,” Ikari whispered, looking down at her.  Presently, Rika let Ikari guide her back to her room.

Ikari walked into an elevator and exited at the lowest level of NERV’s underground headquarters.  He entered a small room where a strong gust of wind removed any stray dust particles from his clothing.  A door slid open and he entered a control room.  On one wall, a large window opened into another lab filled with scientists wearing bulky white biocontainment suits.

One of the scientists turned to face Ikari.  “Progress report, Fuyutsuki,” Ikari ordered.

The scientist replied via a control room loudspeaker.  “The biological samples were successfully retrieved from the Angel, just as we as planned.  But the genome is much larger than we expected, tens of billions of base pairs!  We’ve never sequenced anything this complex before.  The MAGI supercomputers at MIT, Germany, and China are crunching away as we speak.  The Earth Simulator is helping out, and we’ve sneaked some of the data into Folding@Home.”

“And stem cells?” asked Ikari.

“It’s remarkable – we’ve been able to extract adult stem cells from the Angel!  Even the preliminary tests have shown their ability to self-renew indefinitely and generate any type of tissue.  We’ll have a clone ready in no time.  The fever dream of the scroll found in the 4th Dead Sea cave was actually a prophesy!  We’ll have to rewrite the entire timeline for the Human Instrumentality Project,” exclaimed the scientist.

“You focus on the biosamples,” ordered Ikari.  “Let me deal with the Instrumentality.  It appears our little project has been much more successful than we ever dreamed…”

Notes on the EVA arc:
 - Relax – Biyuden isn’t dead!  It’s just… on indefinite hiatus.
 - Rika’s reaction upon being asked to pilot the EVAs is closely based on the reaction of Yukio Seki, the commander of the first kamikaze unit, when he was asked to volunteer.
 - You can see thousand-stitch belts in the movie Letters from Iwo Jima.
 - NERV's headquarters deep underneath Hakone is the same as in the anime.
 - Humanity has thrown atomics at Gojira and failed, and chemical and biological weapons seem to be totally useless.  What else is there to try?
 - Sakuraba dislocated his shoulder in a match with Wanderlei Silva, and remained as cool as a cucumber.
 - Erika physical condition is somewhat based on Asuka's, Yui's is somewhat based on Toji's.
 - The final scene with Rika and Ikari, including the final words, is based on the final scene of End of Evangelion, but with a twist
 - As per EVA tradition, many questions are left unanswered: where did the biological parts of the EVAs come from?  Why the hell were Ikari and Fuyutsuki calling Godzilla an Angel?!  What the heck is NERV planning?  Will Erika come out of her coma in a berserk rage?  Will Yui get a steel exoskeleton?  I’ll leave it to your own imaginations, cuz this story arc is over (for now…)

Seriously, lets see.  Although I personally think that the Evangelion arc is closed, there are about 4-5 more arcs I want to tell in this fanfic, there might be a way to close up some of the EVA plot holes.

New story arc!

Part 15: Virgin Sacrifice
Tokyo
Sayumi and Koharu walked out of the cake shop, carrying bags of sweets and cups of hot chocolate.  Sayumi lit a cigarette.  “I hope this Gojira goes away real soon.  He’s caused all of our concerts and appearances to be cancelled!” she complained.

“Sempai, don’t say that!  It’s killed tens of millions of people, and could very well exterminate all of mankind.  Don’t talk about it as if it were bad weather!” replied Koharu.  “And sempai, you really shouldn’t smoke…”

“Oh be quiet, will you?” replied an annoyed Sayumi.  “It’s not as if the paparazzi cares anymore, with millions of people dying every day.  We should enjoy life while it lasts…”

Suddenly, a van stopped in front of them and men in black masks jumped out.  One of the men grabbed Sayumi and threw her into the van.  Koharu threw her cup of hot chocolate into the face of one of the men and kicked another man in the groin.  But more men jumped out of the van and quickly overpowered her and threw her in.  Both of their arms were tied up.

Koharu and Sayumi sat across from a wild-eyed man with long hair.  “Hey, I know you!  You’re that wacko on TV who thinks that Gojira is the herald of God!” said Koharu.

“Yes, that’s me.  Did you know that Aum Shinri Gojira Kyu has almost overnight become one of the largest religious groups in Japan?  I’m bigger than the Pope!  I am the agent for the salvation of humanity.  And you girls will be instruments for the atonement of mankind’s sins,” said the cult leader.

“Pardon me, could you say that again please?” asked Sayumi.

Koharu glared at the wild-eyed man.  “What this guy wants to do, sempai, is to make a sacrifice to Gojira.  He believes that sacrificing virgins to Gojira will appease it and make it return to the sea,” she explained.

“That’s a good idea!” exclaimed Sayumi.  “So who are the virgins he going to sacrifice?” she asked.

Koharu glared at Sayumi.  Sayumi looked confused at first, but then she realized what the  cult leader intended.  She looked at the cult leader in shock.  “You’re going to sacrifice us?  You can’t do that!  We’ve done nothing wrong!  We’re just little girls,” she said.

Koharu screamed at the wild-eyed man.  “Millions of virgins have already been killed by the monster!  What makes you think that sacrificing two more will make it go back into the sea, you moron?”

The cult-leader waved his hands and screamed back.  “Be quiet!  Stop confusing me with these silly details.  This is the way the ancients did it, and it’s the way we’re going to do it.  Now shut up before I gag you.”

Strangely enough, she does sort of have a point there. Still, somewhat surprising that it's Sayu who's lighting up. Yossi, Miki, or even Reina I might have believed, but Sayu? THAT was a twist.

“Hey, I know you!  You’re that wacko on TV who thinks that Gojira is the herald of God!” said Koharu.
Throw in a whacko to spice things up a bit. ;D  If he dresses them up in their Rainbow Pink outfits for the sacrifice...:P

Hmmm...Mothra eh...? So when will Gamera (A.K.A. Kamei Eri's pet turtle) come into the picture?
Wait...what if.....Eri actually BECOMES Gamera?!?!? :o :o :o

DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!!!

They could always just lie and say that they're not virgins.

I was laughing throughout the chapter though I really shouldn't since they are gonna be sacrificed. It was hilarious especially at how much smarter Koharu was than Sayumi. Gawd the girl is clueless.
What makes the weirdo kidnapper so sure they are virgins? They are after all in the entertainment industry. And I guess he's not gonna make the ceremony an easy one?

Part 16: The Song of Mothra
Outside of Kyoto
The streets, relatively clear of traffic in Tokyo, had gotten emptier and emptier as they proceeded west.  By the time they were in Kyoto, they found a ghost city.  “As far as we can figure out, the monster has made it’s way to the west of Kyoto.  Which is perfect for us.  We’ll sacrifice you to the Herald of God on the verandah of Kiyomizudera Temple,” the cult leader Shoko Jigokuryu explained.

“I still think you’re an idiot.” grumbled Koharu.

“Hey, what if I told you I wasn’t a virgin!” Sayumi exclaimed.  Both Koharu and the cult-leader looked at her in surprise.  “But you’re just 17!” cried Koharu.

“Umm… you’re right.  I guess I’m not a very good liar,” admitted Sayumi.

They rounded a corner and saw the temple ahead of them.  On a park bench on their right, they saw an aged couple sitting together, the first people they had seen in the entire city.  They sat there together, gazing at the trees.  The old man had his arm over the woman’s shoulders, and both of them had a look of melancholy happiness on their faces.

The van stopped at the temple car park.  The cult leader opened up a duffle bag.  “Put these on,” he said.  “I can’t sacrifice you girls while you’re wearing those street clothes.”

“But… but these are our Rainbow Pink outfits!” exclaimed Sayumi.

“Wonderful powers of observation they’ve taught you in Morning Musume, Sayumi,” said the cult leader.  “In the old days, virgins would dress in robes of purest white linen while being sacrificed.  I’ve decided to update things a bit – I can’t think of anything more pure and untainted than your Rainbow Pink costumes.”

Koharu glared at the cult leader.  “Pervert,” she spit out.  “How can we be pure and untainted sacrifices if we let a dirty old man like you look at us while changing?  Untie us and leave us alone in the van,” she ordered.

The cult leader thought a moment, then untied the girls and stepped out of the van with his minions.  The girls quickly changed.  When she was finished, Koharu discretely picked up a glass bottle that one of the cult minions had left in the van and tucked it underneath the ruffles of her pink skirt.

The girls stepped out of the van.  The cult leader looked the girls up and down.  He gave a sigh.  “When God sees that we are willing to sacrifice that which is purest and most dearest to us, he will surely tell his Herald to show mercy on humanity.  You girls will be the Isaac and I will be Abraham of the new age of God,” he said.

The girls were herded out onto the wide verandah of the temple.  To the shock of the girls, instead of the famous view of the beautiful city of Kyoto, the verandah looked over a landscape of burnt ash.  The girls shivered in horror as a small black dot on the horizon slowly grew bigger and bigger.

The cult leader looked at them sadly, and unsheaved a shiny tanto dagger.  Sayumi looked at the horizon.  “When I was a kid, my mom used to tell me stories,” she whispered.  “She said that in times of trouble, a guardian angel would look over me.  She even taught me a song about it.”  She sang in a soft voice,

“Mothra O Mothra
If we were to call for help
Over time
Over sea
Like a wave you'd come
Our guardian angel!”

Koharu joined Sayumi as they repeated the song.  Presently, a gust of wind hit the girls.   But instead of coming from the direction of Gojira, it came from behind them.  The girls looked back.  From the distance, they saw a large airplane approach.  As it came closer, the girls realized that it wasn’t a normal plane.  It had a large body and bright multi-colored wings.  It let out a loud piercing screech.

“That’s Mothra!  My mom’s stories were true!  Mothra is here to save us!” cried Sayumi.

Hmm...why didn't you use Saki and Hagiwara, or W for the Shobijin (W DID cover 4 Peanuts songs, and the Peanuts WERE the original Shobijin)? Ah well, please bring in Battra as well! Mothra kicks ASS!

I wanted to put W together again (for the obvious reason that you noted), but the timing didn't work out.  At the time I started writing, there were no signs that Aibon was going to be coming back.  If only the timing were a bit different...  The alternative was Natsumi and Asami Abe (since they also play the Peanuts in the movie).  But I didn't know enough about Asami to write about her.
