aka world baseball classic (http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com)
Let's get it on! China vs Japan! Who's gonna watch? LOL
-
i don't think i'm gonna watch...go Ichiro!
-
we lost 2-0 to the koreans
and i also forgot to record the game
-
Japan clobbers China, 18-2, called after eight innings due to some dimwit "mercy rule."
Sorry, baseball is NINE innings. In any country. Mercy rules are for kids, not grown-ups.
-
Japan won another mercy rule game: http://tinyurl.com/ggct7
Now Japan and Korea get to go to war on the diamond. Is THIS game going to be on TV? I should check the wbc site -- I'd LOVE to see how Ichiro does against the Korean pitchers.
Haha, even Matsuzaka is talkin' trash: http://tinyurl.com/z6ufb
-
OMG that's embarrassing  i taped it but haven't seen it.
i can tape the japan-korea game and upload it if you want (bad quality but watchable)
-

Yeah, please. I see that ESPN2 is airing the game at 4:00 AM EST, which is 11:00 PM Hawaii time. Which will be kinda past my bedtime.
MLB.com has the China-Taiwan game on Gameday right now...
-
OK first inning for China. They get a man on first and sacrifice him to second. In the FIRST INNING! And then the runner on second is caught trying to steal third!
Sorry, but I think I would go batty watching this. Smallball don't win games in the first inning unless you got Johan Santana pitching for you. Or Sandy Koufax.
-
Sorry, but Smallball don't win games in the first inning unless you got Johan Santana pitching for you. Or Sandy Koufax.
or if you are absolutely outclassed like china is.
i'm watching the china-taiwan game now. if we can get past the first round, at least i take solace in the fact that we can beat china :w00t:
-
Well in the end, Taiwan didn't need small ball: http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060305&content_id=1334894&vkey=wbc_news&fext=.jsp&sid=wbc
Good for both teams... I wonder if they were discouraged by the small crowds in the Tokyo Dome, which numbered around 3,000 or so?
Japan-Korea showdown begins in less than an hour. I guess I'll try catch as many pitches as possible...
-
Canadian Rapage over the Americans :o
-
I wonder whose loss in the WBC is more painful, Japan's or USA's?
USA's is more embarrassing but Japan's might sting even more.
-
i just heard on radio that if canada, usa and mexico all end up 2-1 the tiebreaker used will be least earned runs given up.
how fucking stupid is that? for the canada - mexico game canada should just make 3 errors every inning and lose 10-0 and end the game on the mercy rule. then they will advance instead of the mexicans. LAME.
-
America makes it to round 2!
Ken Griffey Jr. was whooping up! 4-4 2 HRs!
-
Japan is leading USA 3-1 going to the bottom of the 6th.
If they actually hold on to win, then... maybe the sting from the loss to Korea will go away.
Maybe.
-
Wow, Japan vs. USA
In the 9th inning, 3-3, crazy game~
Japan bases loaded, 2 outs!
missed opportunity for Japan, USA's turn to bat, now it is bases loaded with 2 outs for the USA...
A Rod helped the USA win the game
-
Ouch. Japan was jobbed on that appeal play at third.
ESPN2 is showing Puerto Rico vs. the Dominican Republic. All-star lineups both but what the hell is Soriano doing leading off for the DR? Sounds like a spirited crowd there tonight...
-
Ouch Japan, I agreed with the umpire's first call though. I think he touched the base before he ran..
-
Korea needs to beat Japan!!!
-
Maaannn...how does this round go? I'm lost. Don't even know if it's shown on TV anymore. I think I saw like 1/3 of an inning of the Mexico-South Africa and Lee Freakin Smith was coaching?
I did hear about that Japan being screwed...and US lost to Korea? WTF. I agree. They should have this like after the World Series. Way too close to spring training. Andruw Jones tripped on the steps of a Puerto Rican dugout. who knows how long he'll be out now.
-
Korea owned USA man, i couldbt believe it but dang. and they have byung hyun kim starting too
-
A cartoon from an online Korean news site:
http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200603/200603140035.html
Granted that this is just one cartoonist's viewpoint but this cartoon seems arrogant to me? The manager of the Korean team is making more modest statements in public.
And check out the "news" report from the same site:
http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200603/200603140026.html
Whew! Pretty nationalistic slant. I wonder how they'll report a loss?
-
Whew! Pretty nationalistic slant. I wonder how they'll report a loss?
well, it's a pretty big win. it just sucks that the americans aren't taking it as seriously as the other nations.
-
it just sucks that the americans aren't taking it as seriously as the other nations.
That much is true. Same way that NBA players will never battle for an Olympic gold medal the same way they would kill for an NBA championship ring.
Maybe it's just me but the attitude of that cartoon just rubbed the wrong way. Not that I'm going to riot at the Korean Embassy or anything...
-
i actually watch almost the whole match between japan and korea. it was good game. i dont watch baseball due to the fact of the pace of the game. but when u have an atmosphere like this game, i am tempted to watch. ichiro was super pissed after they lost.
one thing i dont get is why japan isnt outa the tournment since they also lost to the Americans? even if USA loses to Mexico, they will also advance.
-
no idea but I know puerto rico is out.
Korea is a powerhouse man
-
if the americans dont win, they are out. so that is very puzzling.
what did ichiro say about the koreans?
-
Americans need to win tonight! I think the Rocket will pull us through.
-
Korea is a powerhouse man
Not sure about that but it does illustrate that anything can happen in a short series.
I'd like to see more of these pitchers from the Korean team endure the grind of a 162-game schedule. I wonder how many elbows and shoulders could handle the strain.
-
I totally don't get what happened. US had a chance based on Japan scoring low. But US lost to Mexico anyways tonite. DAMN Bud. Those fans in San Diego are gonna enjoy this one.
-
US out I guess I'll pull for either JPN or KOR
-
Same. Rooting for Japan and Korea too.
-
Wacky tie-breakers based on earned runs allowed per inning...
I read the US team cared enough to take the elimination hard, which is a good thing.
-
oh well....not too many ppl thought USA was gonna win anyways
-
OK, I am rooting for JAPAN.
They sure seem jinxed against Korea, though...
-
Japan vs. Korea. Top 3rd. One out. Man on second.
Japan has a good OBP in the series but their stats with RISP must be pathetic.
Walk on four pitches by Seo...
-
this will be an intense game for sure.
-
Line drive out and the man is doubled off first!
Hard hit ball but it's still an out and Korea's pitching (and fielding) continues to shine in the clutch.
-
Is Bob Davidson umpiring tonight's game?
Uehara retires eight straight. To the top of the 4th...
-
What's the score? Japan dominating the boxscore?
A Cuba-Japan final would be NICE.
-
Crowd at Petco Park boos Ichiro again.
Jeez, is he the new Joey Belle? He doesn't even do the juice...
-
Ichiro on 2nd. No outs.
Japan MUST come through or they'll regret it the rest of the summer...
Pop foul out to third. Ack!
-
Two fly ball outs and the side is retired.
Place your bets for Korea vs. Cuba. Japan can't buy a hit with RISP.
-
aw man did DR choke or what. well i'm rooting for japan now.. more specifically, i'm rooting against korea
but GOSHDARNIT, ichiro on 2nd with nobody out and they can't score???? :x
-
I'm surprised by Cuba's showing. I guess those mysterious dudes really CAN play ball. I think most people were betting on the Dominicans vs the USA in the championship game.
Man, the ball is NOT carrying in the frosty Petco Park outfield tonight. Helps the pitchers; the outfield defense has added pressure now.
-
well i'm rooting for japan now.. more specifically, i'm rooting against korea
Yeah, me too.
Who's that guy Peter Gammons is interviewing??
-
Two long flyball outs and Uehara is out of another inning.
I think they can go up to 95 pitches in this game. Being that the longball isn't a factor tonight, it's no wonder the pitchers are dominating. Soon the managers will bust out the smallball.
-
Ichiro up for the 3rd time. BOOOOO!!! goes the crowd.
I wonder if they'll bean him again?
-
Something's gonna break. A single home run or something.
Uehara strikes out the 2nd batter but the catcher caught it on the hop and had to make the putout at first. Notice that the home plate umpire called the strike but signaled "safe." The past ALCS (Anaheim-Chicago) taught all MLB umpires a little something.
"Nine-pitch inning for Uehara," said Jon Miller on ESPN. Six full innings in the book.
What are they gonna play during the 7th inning stretch??
-
ACK! Here comes the small ball!!
Byung-Hyung in the game! Tough pitcher to bunt against.
-
TWO-RUN PINCH HOMER!!
WOW! That ball took a ride!!
-
Hit by pitch. Real classy, BK.
And what the hell is Oh doing trying to bunt with one out?!?
-
Jon Miller has a tough time pronouncing "Ogasawara."
-
Ogasawara scores on a ground-rule double! And BK is outta there.
That's what you get for hitting batters! Give 'em another out and that's what happens.
How many pitches does Uehara have left?
-
Cuba's got some good pitching??
C'mon ... Japan better hold the lead.
-
FWIW, Kim's Arizona Diamondbacks still won the Series after he gave up those game-winning dingers against the Yankees. So it ain't over yet.
Gads, another pinch hitter and then a pitching changes. THIS is the American influence on baseball: endless pitching changes. ZZzzz...
Well, this is the only time I'll be post whoring all year I guess.
-
Two-out pinch single drives in the fourth run of the inning, ALL charged to B.H. Kim.
Still, it ain't over cause you can't run out the clock in baseball. Korea will get their chances with the bat.
-
Another two-out hit. Ichiro up to bat and the crowd... well, they ain't THAT loud now.
-
Ichiro!
RBI single to left!
Crowd not as loud now.
-
Seventh inning stretch.
TAKE ME OUT to the ball game, baby!!!
-
BUY ME SOME PEANUTS AND CRACKER JACKS!!..
-
BTW, Uehara is at 72 pitches starting the 7th inning. Very good pacing.
Still, I'll bet Japan wishes there were no pitch limits in this tourney.
-
Uehara K's the side! This was probably his last inning of work.
Japan's bullpen had better not break down like in their first game against Korea.
-
BOOM! Tamura lead-off home run!
Damn, it must have taken some kind of strength to get that ball out.
Rain delay?!! Fark, this sucks!
-
They'll be second-guessing the decision to lift Seo after the 6th inning. What was his pitch count? It couldn't have been much higher than Uehara's.
-
Unless Korea goes on a monster mash? It's pretty much over! How's ESPN's coverage on this? I was readiing ESPN.com that they said the US just wasn't made for this WBC. WTF!
-
korea choking! its amazing how there are always these kinda situation where a team goes undefeated throughout the tourney only to lose the most important game in the knockout round.
japan is getting major redemption on these koreans.
-
They'll be second-guessing the decision to lift Seo after the 6th inning. What was his pitch count?
56 for seo.
-
One out.
Will the Koreans exhibit good manners if they lose?
-
I hate thundersticks.
That is all.
-
i wonder if the cuban expatriates will root for cuba.. hmm... i predict predominantly pro-cuba crowd on monday hehe.
-
Whew!
ESPN showed a shot of the Korean third baseman rolling the baseball in Ichiro's direction after catching his foul pop to end the top of the 9th. Jeez...
Congrats to Japan and good luck to them in the championship game.
BOO! to Byung Hyun for being a sourpuss and causing more runs to be scored by Japan.
I wonder how many of those pitchers from Team Korea will be wearing MLB uniforms in '07?

An MLB.com reporter brings up the 2001 World Series, which I guess is E-Z Journalism 101.
-
Just found this now on the WBC site: http://tinyurl.com/me9lm
-
i guess ichiro will continue to run his mouth about japanese baseball number 1 in asia.
-
ESPN sure played up that Ichiro quote to death.
Let's get ready to rumble!!
-
BEAT CUBA! GO Nipon!
-
It's a wrap: http://tinyurl.com/pql97
All these American wire stories mention the bat flipping, ala Bret Boone. But don't a lot of Japanese players flip the bat away as they run to first on almost any batted ball, high fly or grounder? I'm sure no stories in the Japan press mentioned this (anyone got links to Korean media?).
Player of the game has to be Uehara, whose stock will certainly rise further up as the ace of what is still Japan's marquee team.
-
Another article that highlights the mood of the Japan team: http://tinyurl.com/rjf2p
-
Wow, Japan 4-0 up already
Cuba is going to run out of pitchers if it continue like this
-
oh shit i totally forgot about this
GO CUBA!
-
me too GO JAPAN!! 4-1 now.
-
oy the cubans have run out of gas  they are going through pitchers like elizabeth taylor goes through husbands
-
Don't the Cuban pitchers look like they are 60 years old?
-
haha japan is crusing again in the 9th.
-
Japan is hanging on BITCHES!! :jerk:
-
oh well. cuba played a good game. :thumbsup
-
indeed entertaining till the end. the us should learn something.
Like Ichiro says. The dugouts need to be clean! LOL
-
WOOT!! I won $100 buxs!!
-
Great game!
And Ichiro really stepped up at the right time..
Who needs Matsui? :P
-
Yay Nipon!
-
Team Korea is probably seeing red right now:

Terrific game if you're a fan of Team Japan. Not a technically pleasing game, to this observer. I can't stand the bunting from Japan and I found the Cuban hitters very impatient, first-pitch swinging against Matsuzaka a lot of the time. At least the deficit was cut down going to the 9th inning, making it a little tense.
-
All they won was medals! Pssh. It came out more entertaining then I expected. Hopefully the US can field a more competitive team. Are the White Sox still considered World Series Champs lol
-
ITS ALMOST HERE!!K!<!#! EXCITEMENT
-
14-2 japan hellz yea
-
Dang I just saw bits of Puerto Rico hammering Panama today. Would LOVE to have seen Japan's thrashing of Korea....
-
Incredible. The Netherlands is taking it to em!! I'm surprised how competitive the US team is, having team lunches, etc. Too bad for Canada! BOOM! Outta here. How embarassing  hosting it at Rogers Centre too.
Go Puerto Rico! Carlos Delgado is DA MAN!

Impressive performance by Javier Vazquez: 5 IP, 1 ER, 0 BB.
-
Damn Team USA spanked in the WBC. No prob, I got my Team Japan Ichiro shirt!
-
Japan-Cuba elimination game on ESPN2 now! Will postwhore on Twitter...
-
Nice work Sab, you twitt addict :P
AMAZING!! Ichiro slices and dices. G'bye Cuba.
-
Top first: Korea scores five runs on a walk, muffed fly, single and a three-run bomb to center. What a nightmare for Venezuela!
-
That was from the first! WOW. Looks pretty chilly in Dodger Stadium
Can't wait for US vs Japan. Jeter is a man on a mission
-
Luis Sojo's decision to start Silva over King Felix is an easy second guess.
Kevin Kaduk from Yahoo said on his Twitter feed: it's LOUD at Dodger Stadium...
-
All of Koreatown coming to play! Beats the crowd at Dolphin Stadium and Rogers Centre.
Abreu didn't look himself either! GO KOREA!
-
I followed the first half of Thursday's Japan-Korea game at CBS Sports.com. I found the following description apt for this message board:

LMAO! Abe is so bad at sports.

It's weird to say this as someone who was skeptical that Ichiro would become a S*T*A*R in the major leagues. But I think last night's game just stamped Ichiro's ticket to Cooperstown, even though the last two weeks don't contribute dick to his MLB counting stats.
I don't know if Ichiro has a great track record in clutch situations but nothing creates a legend more than coming through in these high-profile, high-pressure games when you have a damn PLANET on your ass.
What a game, and what a SPORT!
-
I didn't know much about baseball before, but with the World Baseball Classic and it's international competition among 16 nations, it caught my attention. unfortunely I was late into watching the game as my I'd only started watching from the Japan-Cuba game, and not even the whole game, started watching the 2nd half.
The World Baseball Classic got me interested in Baseball, and Japanese baseball have alot to do with it, too. after a couple of days into baseball, I watched "Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball" a documentary about Baseball in Japan and it struck me straight in the heart.
needless to say, I'd began rooting for Team Japan from then on. And then I found out how good the Team is with Ichiro, Daisuke, Darvish, and other players. didn't know that both Ichiro and Daisuke was also popular on their current MLB team here in the US.
Congratulations to Team Japan for winning the 2009 World Baseball Classic, twice in a row and proved to the world just how awesome Asian baseball is.
They left quite a path of defeated foes. Team USA, who invented pro baseball; Cuba, who known to be the best baseball team; and Korea, their biggest rival in international events and whom had beaten them in the past several times.
-
Not to sound un-American, but MLB isn't for me. If they say they play for the game, they're lying, it's all about the Benjamins. Selig was right, American pros and their clubs need to get the players to represent the country. Korea FIGHTING!
-
Sorry to ask this since it's been so long, but where can I watch the entire games online?
mainly, The Japan matches in it's entirety. Best if in English. :D
I'd been going over video clips on WBC.com and getting tired. I want to watch the game in full.
P.S. also, the 2006 WBC games would be awesome, too, If anyone knows where to watch those...
-
DOUBLE POST: BEEN A WHILE AS YOU CAN SEE...
I wait for months and STILL, no uploads of any of the WBC games online. Sure there are clips, but I SO want to watch a full entire game AGAIN.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ABSOLUTELY ANY IDEA WHERE I CAN WATCH RERUN OF ALL THE WBC GAMES, 2006 AND 2009?
-
No clue, although I'm sure they got some SWEET box sets for sale in Japan.
I was only able to record the ESPN coverage of last year's championship finale from the 5th or 6th inning.
-
Interesting piece in the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/28/sports/baseball/28korean.html) about last year's Japan-Korea championship game and the decision whether or not to give Ichiro a IBB in the top of the 10th.
First, I have got to find this TV special.
Second, Kim In-sik has got to be the dumbest manager in the history of baseball. If you want the batter put on base, you call time out, flash four fingers to the catcher and that's that. Throwing the battery under the bus was cowardly and classless.
That said, the pitching coach probably made the RIGHT decision to ignore the "signal" and pitch to Ichiro, foolish pride or otherwise. The IBB is a POOR percentage play and Ichiro doesn't have magical "clutch" powers, nor does he have a ridiculous OBP. Trying to get the third out of the inning was the correct call; it just didn't work out.
-
Finally found the TV program referenced in the Times article (http://www.tbs.co.jp/sports/karisuma2/midokoro.html) above on YouTube (ain't technology grand!). After a few viewings the conspiracy theorist in me says:
-- Manager Kim is still on CYA mode. I believe HE made the decision to challenge Ichiro and he should have taken the fall if it failed. You don't think he misunderstood the non-signals being relayed to the catcher?
-- Pitching Coach Yang made this "revelation" purely for this TV special, specifically to take Lim off the hook.
-- Lim has balls of steel to keep his emotions bottled up for the last 12 months. Imagine: a hostile home nation sniping at your ass AND having to go back to WORK in the country that may still be on Cloud Nine, replaying the Ichiro AB ad infinitum.
P.S. I wonder if there will come a time in BOTH countries when the IBB is viewed as a poor percentage play. I know that Michael Lewis's "Moneyball" was translated/published in Japan. I wonder if there's a Korean term for "slash stats."
FWIW the program on You Tube (Japanese ver.):
Part one
何故敬遠しなかったか?日本語版(1/3) WBC2009 イチローvsイムチャンヨン (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blVQleD95PQ#)
Part two
何故敬遠しなかったか?日本語版(2/3) WBC2009 イチローvsイムチャンヨン (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzEtmhTcH78#)
Part three
何故敬遠しなかったか?日本語版(3/3) WBC2009 イチローvsイムチャンヨン (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMG_cP2sUss#)
Kinda hokey conclusion but I guess it served to get Lim a few more fans in Japan at least. And maybe back home, as well.
