The Official Sumo Thread

About time a Japanese-influenced forum had a thread like this. There's a tournament every other month, the first one's in Jan. Each tournament lasts for 15 days. So DISCUSS! :D

Well, here's also a place to post funny sumo pictures like these:

thx tama-chan for the info. the thread is finally made :P

You couldn't make me start the thread, so you started it yourself, eh? :D  Anyway, thanks! It'll be my personal postwhore thread or something.

I haven't been watching sumo for that long, but this basho was thebest basho I've ever watched. It was all kinda surreal...and fairy-tale like somewhat. There was a face-off, the yokozuna won, the kid got his promotion, one ozeki kept his career, another ozeki kept his yokozuna promotion hope alive, the audience was pleased and they lived happily ever after. :D

Can't wait till the day Hakuho become a yokozuna.

And thanks, daigong, for the buttcrack pic. -"-

I looked at other music forums and HAY!! jpop.com advertised "Talk about the ...Sumo, Japanese Pro Baseball and more!" but there was no Sumo thread! WE WIN!

I shall discuss.  I've been watching sumo since forever and I gotta agree that this basho WAS the most interesting and relevant in quite some time.

I was a little surprised by Asashoryu's senshuraku loss to Tochiazuma.  Some other people on other message boards/mailing lists are crying yaocho but..   ahh, I dunno.  I'm not one for conspiracy theories.

Interesting fact: both makunouchi and juryo went without a single kyujo, first time since 1993 -- the heydey of the Ake-Taka jidai.

Kaio lives for another basho -- another survivor of the Ake-Waka-Taka days.

Oh, I met Hatachiyama Oyakata (ex-ozeki Hokutenyu) last month at a restaurant here in Honolulu.  Cool guy, was vacationing with his wife.  I found out a few days ago that he had a minor stroke in the middle of the basho and had to withdrawal from judging duties.  Hakurozan is in his stable.

And Hakuho...  he'll be a yokozuna barring injury.  He had that Vulcan-like niramiai that harkened to Takanohana, I swear.  His tachiai, his rock-solid yori attack, blah blah.  And he's not as sore a loser as Asashoryu.

I should look for a Chiyonofuji tape I dubbed from a rental store and rip it.  Sumo's not all flabby pusher/thrusters.

More to come.

Hey sumo-fans, wanna explain some words to me?

basho? kyujo? yaocho? niramiai? senshuraku?

Ack sorry, I didn't think this was the "Sumo 101" thread.

I'm too lazy to post basic info about the sport.  There must be volumes of resources online but I never bothered to collect links.

As for the "advanced" terms I used:

Basho = tournament.  Six every year.

Kyujo = absence from tournament, due to injury/illness.

Yaocho = fixed match.  Closest thing to profanity in ozumo.

Niramiai = stare down at the face off.

Senshuraku = final day of the tournament.

Natsu Basho is now in progress, Day Two.  The Kokugikan in Tokyo doesn't look packed.  Not a good sign considering the fan enthusiasm in the previous basho.

Kaio got shoved down by ex-Ozeki Miyabiyama.  Chiyotaikai still has his hataki down pat.  Shin-Ozeki Hakuho is strong and steady as ever.  Kotooshu just beat shin-Komusubi Ama.  And Tochiazuma, tsunatori for the umpteenth time, was upset by maegashira Kotoshogiku.

In the final match, Asashoryu lost his footing at the edge and was thrust down by Wakanosato.  Kinboshi for Waka, his second!

Here are some others that I've found useful, at least from time to time.
I have some more links around, but I forget exactly what they contain since I don't use them that much.  The sumo movies site is pretty handy if you don't have any other way to watch sumo.  There is supposed to be a live video stream available from the official site (I think), but I've never watched it because I'd have to be awake at something like 4am my time to see it.  If you're closer to Japan, with a smaller time difference, the live feed may be a better option.

  • There's no colour rule since they wear their mawashis in every possible colour

Actually, I think there is a rule, but it's more in the sense of lower ranked rikishi not being allowed to wear colored mawashi.  Unfortunately, I forget the details, but you can probably web search for some more information on this.

Asashoryu suffered ligament damage to his right elbow as he fell off the dohyo in yesterday's loss to Wakanosato.  He will withdraw from the tournament as of today, giving everybody in makunouchi a chance for the yusho.

Tochiazuma also lost yesterday and MUST go undefeated for the rest of the week if he wants to keep his tsuna hopes alive.
________

btw...  there actually IS a written rule against mawashi being any color other than black or dark brown.  However, it's one rule that is happily ignored by the NSK.

I heard it may take at least 2 months for Asashoryu to recover. So now there is a chance for Hakuho and Europeans to win Emperor's Cup.

I can watch the tournaments normally 2-4 weeks afterwards 1-2 a.m. My favorite has been always Kaio but I liked also Hawaiians but now they are gone. I just watched tv-program about Kotooshu and some other sumo wrestlers. They were eating and bathing near Fuji. He seems to be very poupular nowdays. Also I like him more and more.

I think Hakuho (4-0) is primed to go for yokozuna right now, since Asashoryu is kaput.  There has never been a shin-ozeki who won back-to-back yusho and clinch promotion to the top rank after only two basho.  Hakuho has an excellent opportunity to make history.  I think he has better than a 50-50 chance, with only injury, the return of Asa in July, and bad luck holding him back,

Tochiazuma obviously shares the same nerves of tin as his ozeki bretheren.  Two losses to hiramaku rikishi looks VERY bad to JSA officials, especially Kitanoumi riji-cho, whose standards for yokozuna promotion may be the harshest of anyone in sumo.

This really could be a chance for Hakuho althought today he lost. I heard Kotooshu haven't had time to train as he is on television too much.

Wow, helluva effort by Miyabiyama here.  I always thought his ozeki promotion was a fluke of circumstances and was actually glad to see him demoted from the rank.  He's on a roll and may be setting himself up for promotion in July.

Chiyotaikai leads the pack at 7-0.  However, he has a VERY BAD habit of using pulling and hataki techniques.  I'm amazed he got the win yesterday against Kisenosato.

I totally forgot about this thread.

This basho has been much more exciting that I have expected. When Asashoryu and Tochiazuma went kyujo, I was feeling sorry for myself for paying for NHK this month.

Hakuho vs. Baruto tomorrow... I fear for Hakuho. Baruto is so strong, it's scary. :p

Is there a chance Asasekiryu will win some kind of award this basho?

That Estonian Baruto has been so wonderful...he is first time in makuuchi division and already fight for Emperor's Cup. It will be interesting as Hakuho will will take on Baruto on last day.

Hakuho won :)  and he may get also yokozuna promotion if he wins also next time. I don't know how Miyabiyama is all of sudden so good... it's really surprising. Maybe his father is still in hospital and he wanted to give his best effort. It was really interesting first time for a long time as Asashoryu was ill.
Also I seem to already miss that wacky guy Takamisakari.:P

last tournament Anma got better record than this tournament though,i'll support for the smaller guy of course,he even beat a big guy like kotohoshu, then again because of kotohoshu injured ankle cost him to lose.

ex-ozeki Hokutenyu (now Hatachiyama Oyakata) died yesterday of cancer at a young 45 years of age.  His career paralleled that of the great Chiyonofuji but he was never able to get past ozeki, peaking in the mid-1980s.

I met him in late February when he was vacationing here in Hawaii.  He was dining with his wife and he was gracious enough to take a picture and share some of his time.  His untimely death is indeed a shock to me and fans of ozumo.

WHOA! What was up with Roho today? What's with the glaring? And no bow? And according to Yahoo news (http://sports.yahoo.co.jp/hl?c=sports&d=20060715&a=20060715-00000131-kyodo-spo), he hit a cameraman and broke a glass in the bathroom or something. I wonder what Chiyotaikai said to him. People say it was "Daijoubu?" but doesn't look so to me. : /

Well, at least he didn't headbutt Taikai. :p

I've seen, in many a honbasho:

Hair pulling,
long extended niramiai,
a lot of rikishi NOT bowing after the match.

I have NEVER seen trash talk outside the dohyo, post bout.  That was weird but no punches were thrown, at least.  Both of them should be reprimanded.

In July 1987 (you can look it up), Konishiki shoving a fellow ozeki after defeating him in a match.  Just an extra shove just after the match was over.  I don't recall anyone being scolded.

As for Roho's locker room tirade, that's different.  Sure doesn't show gaijin rikishi in a good light.  His old shisho, Taiho (one of sumo's ALL-time great yokozuna) should come out and kick his ass.

Roho got suspended for a few days of the basho, which is VERY rare.  Only time that happens is if the NSK is VERY pissed off.

Funny thing is that his brother, Hakurozan, faces Chiyotaikai today...

btw, I got the live streaming feed working now.  Yesterday I couldn't logon cause all the available streaming slots were filled (the Sumo Kyokai is pretty cheap).

WHOA!! A match fixing scandal has rocked the land!

Quote
Just when sumo's biggest star was set to assume his place among the sport's all-time greats a scandal has surfaced to knock him off his game.

Mongolian Asashoryu, whose real name is Dolgorsuren Dagvadorj, won his 20th Emperor's Cup in January, putting the 26-year-old on pace to become one of the most dominant wrestlers in the history of Japan's ancient sport.

But now he's being accused of cheating.

From the translation of the article (that accused him) that I read, supposedly, he's bought everyone in makuuchi except for like 5-6 of them. That's just ridiculous to me.

He's not gonna sue them himself now, I think. The kyokai is gonna do it.
Title: Official Sumo Thread
Post by: Saburo on February 12, 2007, 09:18:11 AM
Well, at least he's not on the juice!

There's something smooth and familiar with conspiracy theories that inevitably fall of their own weight.  They've been talking 'bout yaocho for DECADES, believe me.  Yeah some people let up every now and then but the notion that sumo operates on the same level as, say, a Hulk Hogan exhibition is false.

I might also add that sumo is at an all-time low in popularity.  Hell even I can't watch the matches anymore cause nobody's broadcasting it -- and I live on the same damn place where Akebono, Konishiki and Musashimaru were raised.  If they're going to fix things they better make it so there's less empty seats during the hon-basho.

That looks brutal.  And to think that it's good luck for a baby to be held by a rikishi...

Anyway, I read online that Ozeki Tochiazuma announced his retirement yesterday due to serious health issues (heart related).  Hard to believe that he's already THIRTY -- time flies, indeed!  Not too long ago he was the number-one Nihonjin Yokozuna candidate.

He'll take over daddy's Tamanoi heya in a couple years.  Best of luck to him.

I didn't read about the specifics, only the headline about Asashoryu putting yet ANOTHER rikishi in the hospital due to overagressive keiko.

I am split about the Mongolian Monster.  He could hit 30 yusho if he's healthy but these bullying tactics and arrogant behavior in the dohyo are annoying and disgraceful.  I don't know how he gets away with this shit.  I read there's an unwritten ban on gaijin from Hawaii but when did you ever hear about Akebono or Musashimaru being charged with truly bad behavior?  OK Akebono was drunk in public once and had an affair with an gal in AV.  Whoopie, we should all be as lucky...

Holy crap, he lost again today. :o

I wonder about the condition of his right arm. I remember on the first day, the English announcer said something about it but he said there was no taping. Then he lost and I read some comments about how his right arm was useless. Today it was all taped up and it looked so limp at times.

I'm sure he's gonna bounce back and we'll get some kinda rivalry between him and Hakuho. Should be fun. ;D

Asashoryu lost on the final day to soon-to-be yokozuna Hakuho by uwatedashinage.  Seems like everybody's been throwing down the Mongolian Menace by the same technique: Kaio, Kotooshu, etc.

This is out of character for Asa.  I can see him getting knocked off balance every so often but not thrown down from a standing yotsu grip.  Something was clearly wrong with him the last week of the basho and he will likely go all out to make Hakuho's debut at the top a losing one.

In the yusho interview dohyo-side, Hakuho said he'd probably adopt the Shiranui style of dohyo-iri as per heya tradition (a yokozuna from the fifties named Yoshibayama hailed from Miyagino Beya).  I'm not sure this is the right thing to do; he should carve out his own style.  Also there's a jinx with rikishi who adopt the Shiranui style -- they all flop or don't have long careers as yokozuna.  We'll see what happens with this.

With Asa's condition, I didn't expect much at all from this bout. But it was a great match. He put up a good fight, didn't give it to Hakuho easily. Got me all pumped up. He's gonna be back next basho and give Hakuho more competition.

Down to the last day...  Asashoryu and Kotomitsuki deadlocked at 13-1.  Both lose, both win and there's a playoff.

I just read that Kotomitsuki is 30 years and 3 months old.  This will make him the oldest rikishi to become a shin ozeki since the annual six basho system was instituted in 1958.

Damn, I had no idea he was THAT old.  Of course this was someone whose Makunouchi debut was in the Akebono-Takanohana era...

Today: Koto vs. Kisenosato.  Koto is 6-2 lifetime vs. Kise.  I don't anticipate a letdown from Koto but stranger things happen all the time.

Asashoryu (9 wins lifetime) vs. Hakuho (5).  Haku won in May via dashinage but Asa looks healthy, confident, pissed off...  whatever.  If Haku wants to be the spoiler he'll have to muster up all his energy to keep from getting a major smackdown.

I'm gonna postwhore right now since I'm watching senshuraku live.

Toyohibiki forces out Hakurozan and gets 11 wins in his makunouchi debut, very impressive.  Kanto-sho for the top-division rookie.

Tosanoumi-Kitazakura.  Tosa is 7-7 and has been in the top division almost as long as Kaio.  Long activitiy in the ring, Tosa finally forces out Kita by yorikiri.

Tokitsuumi comes in at 7-7 vs. Houchiyama.  A belt struggle in the center but Tokitsuumi forced him out and gets the winning record after an 0-3 start.

I read that the Nagoya Basho had 8 mai'in onrei this basho, which hasn't been done in several years.

Kasugao-Tamakasuga.  The latter is another longtime veteran.  Basically anyone who battled the Waka-Taka kyodai is a longtime veteran.  Both are 7-7, the ultimate heaven-hell match.  Tama came out hard thrusting and pushed out Kasugao pretty quickly vs. his younger opponent by oshidashi.  At Mae. #15 he needed the kachikoshi.

Otsukasa-Kokkai.  Both have losing records.  You get these matches on senshuraku: two guys with nothing to lose cause they both don't give a shit.  Neither is getting demoted to juryo at least.  Kokkai comes out hard and thrusts down Otsukasa, leaving both with 6-9 records.  Oshitaoshi.

Hey, Kaiho did NOT get a sansho!  He hasn't been in makunouchi in a couple years, makes an amazing return and doesn't get anything for his winning tournament, doing sumo on a busted ankle.  Sucks, and with 10 wins he SHOULD have gotten a share of the Kantosho.

Well fuck the press club...  He's up against another veteran, Tochinonada.  Kahio gets a right uwate, tries a leg sweep.  Tochi, strong with the left shitate, swings him around in the center and out via yorikiri.  Both finish 10-5.

Satoyama-Ryuo.  One 2-12, the other 4-10.  Yikes.  Satoyama came out very aggressively, forcing Ryuo to the edge with a morozashi.  Ryuo thrust down with his left and Satoyama was too anxious at the edge, falling down before Ryuo stepped out.  One guy prolly goin down to Juryo...

Kakuryu-Kakizoe.  Kaki comes out fast and goes forward.  But as is often the case is all upper body and extends too far, getting thrown down by Kakuryu by kotenage.

Yoshikaze-Futeno.  Hidariyotsu...  Yoshi tries to move forward, sotogake attempt.  But once Futeno gets the migi-uwate...  out goes Yoshikaze.  Futeno finishes 5-10, another losing record.  Does Futeno still have his blog?  Was soooo funny to read the entry after he first upset Asashoryu.

Last match of the zenhansen, Tamanoshima-Toyonoshima.  Two guys 6-8.  How do these guys handle themselves at the senshuraku parties?  Toyo has a morozashi, Tama gets the arm-bar, "kime" grip but Toyo twists him around and out, kimedashi.  Playing out the string, these matches.  And thus endeth the first half.

Dejima-Wakanosato. Two old farts with losing records, how sad.  Dejima was once ozeki in the mid-90s and Waka was supposed to challenge for the rank a few years back.  Injuries have taken their toll on both rikishi.  Dejima won the yusho in Nagoya in '99, beating Yokozuna Akebono in a ketteisen.  Dejima charges hard and forces out Waka in a couple seconds.  Didn't help that Waka was moving back and trying to pull him down.  Both finish with 5-10 records.

They've had sumo in Nagoya for fifty (50) years.  Lotta great history here.

Hokutoriki-Asasekiryu.  Asa is 7-7 and, desperate for a win, sidesteps at the tachiai, winning by hikiotoshi.  Shit happens and the fans get gyped.  Hoku finishes 10-5.
Title: Re: Official Sumo Thread

Kotoshogiku-Takikaze.  Thrusting at the onset and Taki gets the win by hatakikomi.

Miyabiyama-Aminishiki.  Ami "beat" Asashoryu on shonichi by isamiashi or something, so he gets the shukunsho.  Miyabi thrusts but Ami resists.  Ami gets a right shitate, stalemate in the ring.  Ami goes for yori but slips down when Miyabi thrusts him down with his right.  Tsukiotoshi.

Tokitenku-Takamisakari.  My friend calls Takami "crackhead."   Matta.  Taka gets a good hidari-uwate, but Toki goes for a right uchigake, breaks Taka's balance and forces him out by yorikiri.

Now...  Kotomitsuki-Kisenosato. Koto 6-2 lifetime against Kise.  Koto has had his eyes on the prize for so long.  His parents are in the arena.  Thrusting in the center of the ring.  Out of control.  Kise stays in the match and twists down Koto by hikiotoshi.  What an upset!  Kise was soooo much more aggresive!  Now Asashoryu wins and that's the end of the basho.  Koto's nerves get the best of him.

Kotooshu-Ama.  Ama comes out fast and hard.  Tsupppari.  Shifts to the left and thrusts him down, tsukiotoshi.  Koto finishes 9-6, Ama 7-8.

Homasho-Chiyotaikai.  Poor Homa, they throw him to the wolves cause he had a good start and there's not enough top rankers for the joi-jin to face this late in the tournament since Kaio dropped out.  Chiyo thrusts hard.  Homa is up to the challenge but Chiyo is the king of hataki and does it again, hatakikomi.

Musubi-no-ichiban on senshuraku.  We haven't had all-yokozuna match since...  Takanohana-Musashimaru.  Asa has to win and he gets the Cup.  Haku has a good deadpan face during the shikiri.  Asa gets a FAST right shitate, Haku has NO defense..   holy shit!  STRONG hidari uwate, and Haku was way too high with his left.  Yorikiri.  Asa raises his hands in triumph as he walks down the hanamichi.  Yusho #21 and no yusho ketteisen.

Holy shit, this is a big deal!

I mean, there was one rikishi who was docked for a few basho after hitting a pedestrain while driving a car (rikishi aren't allowed to operate motor vehicles).

So auto-kyujo, pay decrease for Asa AND Takasago Oyakata (prolly deserved), what amounts to house arrest for the yokozuna until the end of the Kyushu Basho...  I haven't seen this severe a punishment for a yokozuna since Futahaguro was forced to retire in late 1987.  All this for skipping town and playing soccer with the hometown kids.

Of course this is for years of rebellion.  Can you imagine how PISSED OFF he's gonna be in the Hatsu Basho in '08?  Also it's gonna be kinda boring the next two basho, which Hakuho may feel the pressure to take.

Dang, I'm stunned...
Title: Re: Official Sumo Thread
Post by: tamatron on August 01, 2007, 08:34:30 AM
Wait, house arrest, too? o_o Whoa.

I didn't think it was THAT bad for just playing ball with kids for the govt's request. But they've probably been looking for a chance to knock him down a bit, and now that there are 2 yokozunas.

Hatsu basho is gonna be so much fun! He'll probably tsuriotoshi everyone, throwing peopel out the dohyo or something.

Maybe I should just cancel NHK now and have it again in Dec for Kouhaku to Jan for a PO'd Asa!

There's a long-ass thread on the Sumo Forum that explains the "house arrest" Nihongo term.

I am still amazed at this turn of events.  Yes this was handed out after the pot boiled over but still: what if Asa said Fuck You Japan and cut off his chonmage in front of the cameras at Narita before flying home?

He's lived in Japan all these years and STILL doesn't know how to play the PR game.  Hopefully he'll have enough time the rest of the year.

There's also some Mongolian dude on the Sumo Forum board that seems to think everything is a conspiracy against Asa cause he's too strong and the Japanese have it in for him.

What's the saying (per Harlan Ellison)?  The two most common elements in the universe are: 1) hydrogen, and 2) stupidity.

The previous Sadogatake oyakata, former yokozuna Kotozakura, died on Aug 14 at the age of 66.  He lived long enough to see Kotomitsuki promoted to ozeki.  His son-in-law took over the heya about a year and a half ago.

Sad news.  I wonder how this will affect not only Kotomitsuki but also Kotooshu, who was visibly upset at keiko.

It is said that Sumo Shrine is the place where sumo first began, and it is here, according to records, that Nominosukune and Taimanokehaya competed before the 11th Emperor, Suijin. The winner of the competition, Nominosukune, is enshrined in a small shrine in the sanctuary. We can still see the remains of the sumo ring where that competition took place.

Dejima-Homasho.  A win by Homasho may elevate him to komusubi.  Dejima needs a win for kachi-koshi.  Dejima slight inashi to his left and Homa never caught up, slapped down by hatakikomi.  8-7 for both.

Tokitenku-Wakanosato.  Couple more makekoshi rikishi.  Waka quickly moves forward, with thrusts and moves in with his left.  Toki circled to his left and back to the center.  Waka went forward again and Toki slapped him down with his right by hatakikomi.

Kotoshogiku (9-5) -Ama (10-4).  What a comeback by Ama the second half, going 6-1 down the stretch.  Beating Yokozuna Hakuho on shonichi gave Ama his first Shukun-sho.  Ama in quick with his left.  Koto doesn't budge and is able to move forward when Ama tries a quick pulldown, yorikiri win.  Both finish 10-5.

Toyonoshima (7-7)-Asasekiryu (8-6).  Toyo shoved out Hakuho and will get the Shukun-sho with a winning tournament.  Nodowa by both.  Stalemate in the middle...  Toyo gathers some strength and shoves out Asa by oshidashi.  The award also comes with a Y2 million cash award.

Kisenosato (6-8)-Kotomitsuki (9-5).  So-so rookie ozeki basho for Koto.  Plenty kensho banners for what is a pretty blah senshuraku match.  Koto looking stern at the shikiri-sen...  losing to Kise last basho ruined his chances for yusho in July.  Koto whacks Kise around pretty hard, tries for an inashi to his left.  Kise grapples in the middle.  Koto swept Kise's right leg with his left hand and trips him down and out, uchimusou.
Title: Re: Official Sumo Thread

Aminishiki(9-5) - Kotooshu (8-6).  NHK shows Hakuho dohyo-side, looking all stoic and trance-like, almost falling asleep.  Pretty good basho for new Sekiwake Ami.  Those knee braces look brutal.  Quick morozashi for Ami and Koto is way, way high.  Almost too-easy yorikiri win.  I'm almost surprised that Ami didn't get a special prize for double-digit wins.
Title: Re: Official Sumo Thread
Post by: Saburo on September 23, 2007, 08:28:45 AM
Hakuho (12-2) - Chiyotaikai (9-5).  Chiyo holds the record for most ozeki basho, fifty-plus.  As long as his legs are in good shape, he's probably good for another couple years.

45 kensho banners this match.  I think the record is 50-plus.

Chiyo has two hataki wins in the last 6 basho.  If Hakuho is calm he should be able to withstand the oshi attack and keep his balance.

If Hakuho did a henka...  Chiyo would lose for sure!

Jikan desu!  Left hand on the mawashi quick by Hakuho, Chiyo is thrusting a brick wall!  Hakuho just walks him out and wins the Aki Basho with a 13-2 record.  The camera shows Kyokutenho in the dressing room in consolation.  Hakuho wins his third yusho of the year and fourth of his career.

For the first time in over five years, a winner take-all match occurred between two yokozuna on the final day of a sumo basho.  Hakuho (going for the three-peat) vs. Asashoryu (first basho back from suspension after six months).

And it WAS a great match!  A stalemate in the center, Asa being forced back but not out.  Hakuho went for the kill again, twisted to his right and threw down Asa with all his might, uwatenage!

This was Hakuho's 6th Emperors Cup.  Now that Asa has a real rival, I hope the excitement will carry over to the basho in Osaka.

Title: Re: Official Sumo Thread

Yep, from Bulgaria.  He's the first European to win a regular sumo tournament (hon-basho).

He was promoted to sumo's second-highest rank of ozeki a couple years ago but appeared to lose a lot of his drive and coast to easy paychecks.  He dropped out of the last basho due to injury and another losing record this time would result in demotion from ozeki.  But an amazing run of 12 straight wins (including back-to-back triumphs against the two Mongolian yokozuna) not only saved his ozeki rank but put him in line for the top rank (another tournament victory would seal the deal).

I'm skeptical that he will make it to the top next time out in July.  No matter, finally he's the top dude in sumo if only for a single tournament.

Koreyori Sanyaku.  Senshuraku of Nagoya Basho...

Toyonoshima-Chiyotaikai.  Toyo is 4-0 lifetime over Chiyo!  Toyo beat Asashoryu on Shonichi.

Chiyo thrusted high and wild, allowing Toyo to come in deep with his right and turn around the ozeki to the side.  Easy yorikiri win for Toyonoshima (10-5) over Chiyo (9-6).  Prolly promotion to sekiwake in September.

Kaio-Kotomitsuki.  I can't believe Kaio (36 years old?)  is STILL in sumo -- he got his start the same basho as Akebono, Wakanohana and Takanohana (1988!).  Koto is from Aichi, the place of the basho.

Koto grabbed with his right quickly, being the aggressor from the start.  Kept going for the pulling throw (dashinage) and Kaio was never in the game.  Quick win by okuridashi.

Last bout: Hakuho vs. Kotooshu.  Haku (14-0) is gunning for his first perfect tournament win (zensho yusho) since being promoted to yokozuna (he clinched the title on Day 13).  Koto (9-5), winner of the previous basho in May, looks to be the spoiler.

Title: Hakuho's win streak snapped at 63
Post by: Saburo on November 16, 2010, 05:47:31 PM
With Asashoryu's de facto firing from ozumo, Hakuho has established a new brand of dominance as the sole yokozuna.  He had a run of 63 straight wins and was in a great position to topple the all-time mark of 69 this tournament, one of the sport's most important records set by a legendary, almost god-like yokozuna.

Alas one slipup  (http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/ss20101116b1.html)and it's back to square one.

Yep it was THAT big a deal, even with sumo's popularity being at an all-time nadir.  This match led off the NHK morning newscast even before stories about petty crimes and economics.

p.s. lookit all the empty seats up there!  When I went to sumo in the early 90s in Kyushu...  well we had to wake up super early to get same day tickets for those cheap seats.  Sad nowadays.

The Wolf passes on: ex-yokozuna Chiyonofuji dead at 61 (http://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20160731/p2g/00m/0sp/120000c).

This one is brutal. I saw Chiyo go on an extended run of yusho in his thirties that seemed to me unbelievable. A combination of power and grace and amazing technique in a sport dominated by massive, immobile forces.

A hiramaku yusho is possible when there's chaos in the upper ranks. In this tournament two yokozuna withdrew, one was "retired," and one more went on a four-bout losing tailspin in the second half. I don't anticipate Tochinoshin to keep this up when the joi-jin are all back and healthy but hey, I really hope he soaks all of this in. Pennant flags fly forever and so do yusho portraits at the Kokugikan.
