Pinky Violence

What is PInky Violence? It's a line of sexy, action-exploitation thrillers begun in the late sixties in Japan. These films featured female yakuzas and girl boss guerillas duking it out for their freedom, their pride and their own piece of the pie. This electrifying genre mixed titillation with social commentary, predating its closest American and European counterparts by several years. These groundbreaking films continue to influence some of cinema's most celebrated directors, like Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Takashi Miike.

Sex & Fury, translated Story of Delinquent Female Boss: o-Chō Inoshika is a 1973 Japanese film directed by Norifumi Suzuki. Reiko Ike stars as Ocho, a gambler and pickpocket in Meiji Era Tokyo. After sheltering a fleeing anarchist, Ocho runs into the three gangsters responsible for her father's murder, and runs afoul of various yakuza who want her dead. A European spy, played by Christina Lindberg, arrives on the scene and complicates matters.

Reiko Ike / 池玲子

Reiko Ike (池玲子 ,Ike Reiko?, born May 25, 1953 in Tokyo, Japan), is a Japanese actress, singer, and entertainer. She is best known for her roles in the genre of action/erotic movies known as pink films. Ike also released an album of songs in 1971, Kôkotsu No Sekai. After a drug-related arrest, and another arrest for illegal gambling in the 1970s, Ike dropped out of the entertainment business.

Ike's career was launched with the fourth entry in Toei's Hot Springs Geisha series, Hot Springs Mimizu Geisha (1971). A media frenzy erupted following the release of this film when Ike claimed to have lied about her age to gain a part in the movie. Claiming to have in fact been sixteen years of age when she starred in this softcore sex film, Ike caused a scandal. The publicity only served to make the film one of Toei's most profitable films of the 1970s.

In her third film, director Norifumi Suzuki's Modern Porno Tale: Inherited Sex Mania (1971), Ike co-starred with French erotic actress, Sandra Julien. Eirin, the Japanese film-rating board, objected to the graphic lesbian scenes between the two actresses, and this film had to be severely cut before it could be released theatrically. Ike decided to stop performing in nude scenes after this film, concentrating instead on films in the delinquent girl sub-genre of S&M films. Ike starred in five of Toei's seven Sukeban (delinquent schoolgirl) films made between 1971 and 1974.

Patrick Macias describes this series as, "bare-chested, shotgun-packing chicks Miki Sugimoto and Ike Reiko getting into one catfight after another." She also starred in all four of Toei's Terror Female High School films made in 1972 and 1973. Ike's later films would include appearances in Kinji Fukasaku's Battles Without Honor and Humanity series and Graveyard of Honor, and the second sequel to Sonny Chiba's The Street Fighter.

Yuko Mihara Weisser calls Ike one of the "icons of Pinky Violence," and in a review of Sex and Fury (1973), DVDManiacs.net called Ike, "the very epitome [of] the cinematic bad girl, playing her role with a sense of collected cool and tough attitude that can rival that of even better known North American tough gals such as Tura Satana from Faster Pussycat… Kill! Kill! or Pam Grier in Foxy Brown."

Her erotic presence flutters across a multitude of erogenous non-verbal modes - moaning and uttered shrieks of ecstatic pleasure, sibilating suffocated whispers of excitement, and grunting and growling like a bitch in heat. When Ike does sing, it is in a subdued, husky voice about sex, submissive love and seduction. Although all the songs are cover versions, Ike confines herself to whispering but a small part of the original lyrics, spending the remainder on guttural erotic incantations backed by the desolate sound of a cheesy organ and a muffled yet ecstatic mellifluous vocal sound that is reminiscent of the 13th Floor Elevators’ Tommy Hall breathing down a jug. The entire recording is suffused with a unique atmosphere, a ripe and heady Japanese eroticism now sadly overwhelmed by the intrusive and infelicitous import of cheap Westernized thrills and assorted uneuphonious cultural junk. Nevertheless, Kôkotsu no Sekai launched Ike as the nightingale of the pink new wave.

Here's the ultimate "Women in Prison" flick starring none other than the legendary Meiko Kaji. Female Convict #701 has plenty of violence, nudity and sex so it's a must for all cult cinema fans! 8)

Female Convict #701: Scorpion (女囚701号 さそり ,Joshuu 701 Go - Sasori?) is a film in the "Women in Prison" sub-genre of Pinky violence Pink films made by Toei Company in 1972. The first in a series, the film starred Meiko Kaji and was Shunya Ito's directorial debut.

After being cruelly set by a up crooked detective named Sugimi (Isao Natsuyagi), whom she loved, Nami Matsushima (aka Matsu the Scorpion) (Meiko Kaji) is sentenced to do hard time in a women's prison which is run by sadistic and horny male guards. There are 700 other prisoners, making Matsu number 701. Her crime was making a failed attempt to stab Sugimi on the steps of the Tykyo Metropolitan Police Headquarters because he used her to win favor with the Yakuza. While in prison she meets inmates like Yuki Kida (Yayoi Watanabe) who was committed for fraud and theft, Otsuka (Akemi Negishi), jailed for burglary and extortion, and Katagiri (Rie Yokoyama) who has been impounded for arson and illegally disposing of a body.

On the outside, Sugimi and the Japanese mafia orchestrate a plan in which Matsushima will succumb to an "accidental" death in prison. They enlist the help of Katagiri, pulling on her ties to both Sugimi and the mafia, and quickly set their plan in motion. Little do they realize, however, how hotly Matsushima's desire for revenge against Sugimi burns. After a riot, she escapes and kills all the Yakuza and Sugimi. Free, she then walks away alone.

Various Artists - Queen of Japanese Movie CD

DOWNLOAD

A wonderful counterpart to the series of Japanese soundtrack CDs we've been stocking -- and a book that's filled with incredible images and a bonus CD of music! Although the book does have some details in English -- profiles of a few actresses and films in the Japanese "bad girl" genre of the late 60s and early 70s -- most of the text here is in Japanese, but that's a-ok with us, because the real appeal of the book is all the wonderful images from the films, all of which are in glorious color! The 160 page book is almost as dramatic as the films themselves -- beautifully produced with great graphics, rich colors, and some of the most striking images from the movies. And with a full bonus CD of music, the whole thing's available at a price that's almost like getting a CD with a bonus added book!

I tried looking around for the playlist

so maybe everything corresponds after that.

 Stray Cat Rock - Beat'71
Girl's Junior High School - Bad Habit

Miki Sugimoto

Miki Sugimoto (杉本 美樹, Sugimoto Miki?, January 28, 1953 -) is a Japanese actress best known for her roles in the sukeban (delinquent girl) sub-genre of Toei's action/erotic form of "pink film" known as Pinky Violence. Miki Sugimoto is almost inseparable from fellow 70's Toei film star Reiko Ike. Both stared in numerous sukeban films throughout the 1970's and helped build a generation of "Toei porn". Although a fashion model and star of Go Go Girl in All Night Fuji (a Japanese TV program), she made her film debut in Hot Springs Mimizu Geisha (Onsen Mimizu Geisha, 1972) and was later best known for her film Zero Woman - Red Handcuffs (Zeroka no onna: Akai wappa, 1974), possibly the most psychotically over-the-top Japanese crime film from the 1970s. It perfectly illustrates the uncanny versatility she had honed and brought to perfection in her earlier sukeban roles. She left the film industry in 1978 to marry a former classmate-turned-businessman and become a nursery school teacher.

Man, I love me some Pinky Violence flicks. I own a few, including the Panik House box set with Reiko Ike's album (and yes, it's mostly moaning  :D), and I've seen a bunch of others, including the Scorpion pics. Between Ike and Sugimoto, I definitely prefer Sugimoto (not to say Ike's bad, though...). Ike's a better actress (Miki has the emotional range of my shoe), but if you're watching these movies for the acting (instead of a bunch of attractive women kicking ass), then you're doing it wrong.

Anyway, here are a few screencaps from some of Miki's movies (Ike is in a few of them). She's definitely a gorgeous lady:

Welcome to JPH!P, Mucca! Man, I can't believe I'm no longer the only Pinky Violence fan here lol. Anyways Meiko's Scorpion series is pretty brilliant and her Stray Cat Rock series has a couple of gems too. I dig both Ike & Sugimoto but if I had to choose between them I'd pick Reiko for her genre defining nude fight scene in Sex & Fury. By the way, you got any recommendations? I'm really interested in Sugimoto's Zero Woman but I haven't been able to find it

Look up anything related to the Roman Porno (short for "Romantic Porno") stuff by Nikkatsu.  It's all a bunch relatively high budget softcore porn movies in all kinds of genres.  The angel guts series is all kinds of fucked up and pretty good.

It's all pretty different from pinky violence but I think you would like it.

Thanks for the welcome! I love Sex & Fury, too -- in fact, it was the very first Pinky Violence movie I ever saw (the local video shop has a decent selection)! Christina Lindberg is pretty nice in that one, too. I saw its sequel in a store once, but I didn't buy it...and haven't seen it anywhere since :(

So yeah, Reiko's definitely awesome, I just prefer Miki a little bit more. :)

The Panik House box set is a really good place to start if you don't have it already. I know they've released a few more titles since that box set, but I've only seen one (Delinquent Girl Boss: Blossoming Night Dreams, which isn't nearly as good as the Delinquent Girl Boss title in the Pinky Violence box set...too much bad slapstick). Beyond that, I own Meiko's Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter and Zero Woman. Zero Woman is pretty darn good, and definitely worth tracking down -- when a movie starts with the heroine shooting a guy in his junk, you know you're in for a wild ride!

I've also been interested in seeing some other stuff like the Rica series, but so far I haven't found them for purchase (though I'm pretty sure Amazon has them for sale).

It's good to find some other fans of this stuff; they're trashy as hell, but they're so much fun.

I own the Angel Guts box set (five movies, I believe). They're definitely fucked up, and not necessarily in a good way. I mean, lots of the Pinky Violence movies have questionable stuff in them -- and I'm not the type to get squeamish easily -- but the sheer amount of rape in the Angel Guts movies makes me uncomfortable (one film in particular is about a female reporter covering rape cases, so you get uncomfortable scene after uncomfortable scene of women being gang-raped).

I suppose if you can get past that, some of the Angel Guts films have some sort of social commentary that the regular Pinky Violence flicks lack...but man, I'm not a fan of all that rape at all.

They're uncomfortable because they aren't porn.  They're art movies disguised as porn so perverts like you and me get tricked into watching them.

Some weeks ago I watched Sex & Fury and was surprised how much it resembled Lady Snowblood manga. It was almost a parody and a more faithful adaptation at the same time. Toshiya Fujita's Lady Snowblood movie starring Meiko Kaji featured no nudity, except for one brief scene and ignored almost completely Yuki's pickpocketing but in Sex & Fury Inoshika Ocho pickpockets almost involuntarily and uses her  naked body almost like Yuki in Lady Snowblood manga and the naked sword fight scene in snow really reminded of Kazuo Koike's and Kazuo Kamimura's manga. On the other hand at the beginning of the movie Sex & Fury lacks some sort direction whereas in Lady Snowblood Yuki is after revenge almost at the beginning.
