Yep, from Bulgaria.  He's the first European to win a regular sumo tournament (hon-basho).

He was promoted to sumo's second-highest rank of ozeki a couple years ago but appeared to lose a lot of his drive and coast to easy paychecks.  He dropped out of the last basho due to injury and another losing record this time would result in demotion from ozeki.  But an amazing run of 12 straight wins (including back-to-back triumphs against the two Mongolian yokozuna) not only saved his ozeki rank but put him in line for the top rank (another tournament victory would seal the deal).

I'm skeptical that he will make it to the top next time out in July.  No matter, finally he's the top dude in sumo if only for a single tournament.

Koreyori Sanyaku.  Senshuraku of Nagoya Basho...

Toyonoshima-Chiyotaikai.  Toyo is 4-0 lifetime over Chiyo!  Toyo beat Asashoryu on Shonichi.

Chiyo thrusted high and wild, allowing Toyo to come in deep with his right and turn around the ozeki to the side.  Easy yorikiri win for Toyonoshima (10-5) over Chiyo (9-6).  Prolly promotion to sekiwake in September.

Kaio-Kotomitsuki.  I can't believe Kaio (36 years old?)  is STILL in sumo -- he got his start the same basho as Akebono, Wakanohana and Takanohana (1988!).  Koto is from Aichi, the place of the basho.

Koto grabbed with his right quickly, being the aggressor from the start.  Kept going for the pulling throw (dashinage) and Kaio was never in the game.  Quick win by okuridashi.

Last bout: Hakuho vs. Kotooshu.  Haku (14-0) is gunning for his first perfect tournament win (zensho yusho) since being promoted to yokozuna (he clinched the title on Day 13).  Koto (9-5), winner of the previous basho in May, looks to be the spoiler.

Hakuho's cutie pie wife is shown in the stands, pregnant with their second child.  Life is good.

Good crowd on the last day of the tournament...  Of course it's Sunday and it's Nagoya's only basho of the year.

Haku gets left uwate grip.  Koto tough in the middle.  Haku drove forward and threw down Koto hard and out of the ring.  Zensho yusho for Hakuho!  His second and first as a yokozuna!

Kyushu basho senshuraku: Hakuho threw down fellow yokozuna Asashoryu with a left-handed arm throw to clinch a perfect record in the tournament, his 12th career title.

With the win Hakuho established a new record with 86 wins in a single calendar year (out of 90 bouts -- 15 bouts, 6 tournaments a year).

Yokozuna Asashoryu OUT!  http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20100204x1.html

Sumo has now gotten a lot more boring.

Hakuho's win streak snapped at 63
« Reply #114 on: November 16, 2010, 05:47:31 PM »
With Asashoryu's de facto firing from ozumo, Hakuho has established a new brand of dominance as the sole yokozuna.  He had a run of 63 straight wins and was in a great position to topple the all-time mark of 69 this tournament, one of the sport's most important records set by a legendary, almost god-like yokozuna.

Alas one slipup and it's back to square one.

Yep it was THAT big a deal, even with sumo's popularity being at an all-time nadir.  This match led off the NHK morning newscast even before stories about petty crimes and economics.

p.s. lookit all the empty seats up there!  When I went to sumo in the early 90s in Kyushu...  well we had to wake up super early to get same day tickets for those cheap seats.  Sad nowadays.
