 I personally don't like most filipino bands. Most of them tend to sound too much like Creed in Tagalog. >_> The only band I can remember that I enjoyed listening to was Orange and Lemons.

There are quite a bit of great singers though, but I don't really like OPM songs that much.

XD yeah i do admit that :P pinoy bands tend to have that stereotypical cookie cutter vocalist, which is why i have found myself listening to like sappy romance OPM and old songs XD rather than the contemporary newer groups

i seldom listen to OPM. but i like Yeng's songs. :/
bands.... well, there are a few bands that i like. nothing beats Eraserheads. ^^ oranges and lemon has this beetles influence so i like them. for some reason i don't like bamboo, i don't know why, maybe because i don't like bamboo himself. XD

Oh I do enjoy Orange and Lemons. I actually came across them on accident, but it was one of the neatest accidents ever. Haha. They have a cool sound indeed.

Another problem with Pinoy music is that there aren't many places (at least here where I live) where you can buy their music. Sure we have a radio station that plays Pinoy music, but the selection is really limited and you hear the same shit over and over again. The lack of ripped stuff also limits the exposure that Pinoy singers/groups get online.

anybody listen to.
Up Dharma Down
seriously... there is STILL, GOOD music here in the philippines ;) UDD is one of the best in the scene imo. great quality music..
another great band is Urbandub (which i really reccomend too)

just don't dig into mainstream 'love rock' crap. lol
ugh. and don't get me started on novetly/cheezy bands like Kamikazee and Parokya ni Edgar, etc.. imho

APO and Eraserheads songs are good. Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez's songs are nice too. :D

One trend I noticed regarding Pinoy music nowadays is that they keep on reviving old songs. It's not that I'm against it or the contemporary versions are that bad but what I fear is that the writers/composers here are slowly running out of ideas. :(

I agree with roninbuddha that there are still some good bands and music in the RP. The only problem is if they get too much exposure, esp. the alternative ones, they become mainstream novelty/pop.

I'll try to upload some songs here in a few days if I still have em in my PC. :P

I love me some pinoy, but to be honest it's so difficult to find stuff here.  It took me FOREVER to get ahold of Jasmine Trias' (pinoy) album and damnit, she's from Hawaii!  (Got it from Ebay.)  The few online stores I do find don't keep up as well as let's say, ethaicd does with Thai music or CDJapan for JP.  Plus the CDs are like, 8 bucks but the shipping is astronomical.

Even searching online, I tend to find the same bands/artists ripped over and over again.. and especially since I'm always looking for non-rock groups/singers and something different from ballads, that makes it even harder.  (I like pop... eep!!)

So far the only albums I've been able to get my hands on are from Mishka Adams (great Jazz.. she's an amazing singer), Kitchie Nadal (I can't help it.. I love her- cool attitude, great singer and simply adorable), Roxie (her E.P. has tons of covers of KISS' korean songs! Yum) and Rica Peralejo (I know ^^;;;;  But I like her dance tracks!)

I think I'll try to upload some tracks sometime to spread the love and get back to my.. err.. half roots.

i disagree with a previous post saying most OPM bands sounds like CREED
perhaps i am biased being a pinoy but there are old and new bands that have reinvigorated the Pilipino music industry and roused interest in bands as opposed to vocalists such as Sarah Geronimo and Gary V.

...and don't even get me started on Jasmine Trias who, when asked on American Idol what her nationality is, mentioned every other Asian country but the Philippines!  And where is she now?

anyway, post '90s bands like Eraserheads, Pupil, Rivermaya, Sandwich, Orange & Lemons, Yano (and his latest reincarnation-dongabay), Join The Club, M.Y.M.P. and True Faith are but a few examples of great bands that i love and admire...

Revival/Tribute projects have recently gained popularity after the success of Kami nAPO Muna but this is not a case of Pilipino songwriters running out of fresh ideas.  It is rather a case of cashing-in on the nostalgia trip that everyone, especially the older crowd can appreciate from time to time.

I offer two websites where you can download, discover and hopefully appreciate such bands and solo OPM artists:
1.  http://www.mp3mocha.blogspot.com/
-make sure to check out the Archives section too
2.  http://www.kalibog.com/forum.php
-you will need to register but it's free, and worth it

Holy crap, did NOT know there were so many Pinoys here (hey kuya azn~)

I still like OPM, I dont mind it. I just prefer Japanese and Korean music now. But I still bust out some Parokya, Kamikaze, E-heads, etc etc. But of course, they are all bought from the PI (we have a damn collection) beacuse no one uploads them from the internet. Oh well, its cheap in the PI anyway.

That's what I think too XD

I'm not that big of a fan when it comes to OPM, actually, I hardly listen to it. But I do hear the occasional good song, I also have a liking towards artists like Kitchie Nadal though.

I'm currently obsessed with the song "Pag-ibig Na Kaya" sung by Christian Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go  It's got such a nice melody, and even though I can only understand half the lyrics, it's still great! Haha.

You know what the Philippines needs? A new wave of Pop bands. Not pop as in popular but pop as in pop music. Or uh ... happy music that isn't novelty or otso-otso/pito-pito.

I agree.  I don't know all that much about pinoy but what I HAVE noticed is that it's totally difficult to find just pure, 'garbage' (the term held very loosely) pop music.  The kind of shit you can just tune into and sing along.  I'm a fan of 'good' music (just like anyone else) but sometimes I need me some Kumi Koda or Morning Musume to get through the day.  Rica was like, the closest I got ;;;;;

For some reason, almost all the compilation CDs I picked up were around 50% ballads and 50% rock.

Do you know that the song was created for a Korean drama series showing here in the Philippines? It's called Princess Hours but you probably know it as Goong. And the song is Perhaps Love (english for Pag-ibig na Kaya, hehe) by HowlL and R&B pop singer J.

Yeng is pretty good, considering one of her more popular songs she composed at the ripe age of 14. O_O

Orange and Lemons music is pretty good but there are other good alternative bands such as Sugarfree.

Anyway, I can get you some OPM stuff if you want.  Is it OK to post links here? I know the rules roughly but I want to be sure. :D

... an interesting side note: Orange & Lemons ripped-off the melody of this song from "Chandeliers" by an obscure 80's new-wave band called "The Care" which featured Ian Broudie who later formed "The Lightning Seeds"...

My sister and I noticed things like that about so many "OPM" songs.

Just yesterday my sister was all like "They ripped off lionel richie!" at one of the songs in that site wordsworth posted.

I also remember a song that got popular like a year ago that ripped-off the chorus from Hikki's First Love.

Don't remember the names of those songs though.

I also noticed the bgm and sound effects of lots of shows are from video games. I also remember the bgm during a show was the x-files theme with a different arrangement.

My dad got yeng constatino's album so I ripped and upped it :P
He loves this girl.

It's not bad. She's sorta like YUI. I would have probably preferred if it was more acoustic and stuff, as the production isn't all that great.

Hmmm, I wouldnt call all OPM garbage now and days. There are a FEW good rock bands out there still. But for the most part, they still sound like the lead singer of E-heads and PArokya ni Edgar. those two bands will NEVER die. Awesome.

As for rap, I still think Gloc 9 is the sheit. I dont know if they have him on youtube, but I'm sure they have him on mypace. I dont do myspace, but I saw my sister search for him and a whole buncha Cali people hooked myspace up with Gloc 9.

Songs that I would recommend first and foremost is :
Simpleng Tao
Sayang
JOLOGS

Well it's partly because Ely Buendia (the founder of E-heads) founded two other bands, Mongol and Pupil. Parokya is great, they have this irreverent style that I like. There is another long-standing alternative rock band, Rivermaya. Even though Bamboo left them several years back, they are still going strong.

Here are some links for the artists you mentioned.

Kitchie Nadal is very good (well being the former lead vocalist of Mojofly wouldn't hurt) :p . Yeng's voice is being compared to her voice which is sort of a pinoy Alanis Morissette. I hope to see a new album from her soon.

EDIT:
The title certainly works with it, no doubt it's haunting
I like the softness and then how it picks up and gets heavier... I do have a complaint though, it's too short :P

From that it reminds me of a softer version of the band Within Temptation, whom I love.
You got lots of tiny touches in the music that make it sound majestic :)

I've been meaning to UL this for a while now.  This is a demo of a dude named Jimmy Marquez, who was on some show with Sarah back in the day, and went on tour with her in North America back in 07.  I got his autograph too, but I figure I'll put it here instead of the shoutout thread since he hasn't really gotten big yet.  Unless he has, and I just haven't noticed.  His cd was the only one leftover at the Sarah concert, and I needed something for them to autograph, so yeah.  Here it is.  What the hell did he write?  I can't even read that shit.

Pia Magalona (widow of Francis M) released the first single on her twitter a few days ago.

http://twic.li/aha (http://twic.li/aha)

It's "Higante" off the album IN LOVE AND WAR by Francis Magalona and Ely Buendia.  Ely Buendia was the lead vocalist from the legendary OPM group Eraserheads.  This is an already classic pairing from the best of both worlds. Crazy anticipated album.

Cool.  You should put up a link to your blog in your signature maybe.  I also take part in the radio station here which takes place Monday nights in North America (Tuesday early morning in Europe and early afternoon in Asia).  I don't have alot of Filipino hip hop or even OPM to play unfortunately, but I try to represent the homeland whenever I can.  Maybe I should do another show completely in Tagalog again?

dang, no way! Sup B-Roc, if its you =)  Im also part of the radio station that plays on Monday Nights.  I always try to play at least 1 opm hip hop song, even if i have to play the same one every week, haha.

yeah, i started listening to opm hiphop for a few months now. I don't have much, mostly just Gloc-9, NimbusNine, and Stickfiggaz.
I'll definitely play more tracks if you send us some.  i'll link you thru email.

Favorite tracks? Gloc's Lapis et Papel.  too sick.

And the Aero/Gods Will track 01 on the Back to the New School mixtape. i dunno who did that beat.  and the Light Remix with Francis M and Loonie, i think Chrizo did that one.

KT - you did a show completely in Tagalog? i missed it =)  I heard Dai did his show in cantonese once.  I wanna hear that too.

Damn, I really need to check out this thread more often and get myself educated.

I've personally had a bad impression regarding the term "OPM" due to my family tending to favor a lot of the softer and older-sounding pop acts (though [noembed]this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NokRpVMqkd0)[/noembed] always made me and my cousins laugh a lot when we were kids), but I know I can shake that if I stopped being so lazy about Pinoy music. I've heard a little bit of Filipino hip hop and hip hop-styled music over the years, but never really followed through in my research. Andrew E. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_E.) is pretty much the first name that comes to mind for me, and that's only because I was living in the Philippines for a while when he made his debut (even bought his first album on cassette back then). XD

And there's this song that's been hiding in my MP3 collection for years...
kuya (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-18Dzq01EQ4#)

As for rock, I tend to be picky about that kind of music, but I'll definitely try to pay attention to Ode to La Luna from here on out. ;)

And I just found out through this thread that Francis M. died last year. That sucks...one of many that I never checked out but now need to.

she's either small or Oprah is really HUGE
Can't it be both? :P

I personally like Eraserheads, Parokya ni Edgar, Giniling Festival and Spongecola and some Sugarfree

here's a sample of giniling festival:

Giniling Festival Psycho Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiWL-A_eKMQ#)

most of their songs are a rip-off of existing songs rhythm and they just changed the lyrics. still geniuses in my opinion XD
i like spongecola because of the lyrics of their songs. i hear Creed when the vocalist sings. Something that involves the nasal i think

Wasak Waltz - Ely Buendia & Francis M

This song is in heavy rotation for me right now. It's definitely the catchiest tune that Ely has come up with in a very long time. I read somewhere that the song originated from a demo he made for a beer commercial (or was that Pupil's Monobloc?). Long live FrancisM!

March, in case you were unaware, is Women’s History Month. Los Angeles’ own, Bambu, leaks a song that takes a look at domestic violence from a personal perspective. The song speaks on his family history with violence in the home, as well as his own struggles with it, even touching on the normalcy of such violence against women in our own Hip Hop culture. For this one, DJ Phatrick stepped out from behind the turntables to produce, sampling Adele’s “Someone Like You.” A video is set to drop at the end of the month and the song will also be included on Bambu’s …Exact Change… re-release bonus EP, Short Changed, dropping on April 29, 2011 through Beatrock Music Label.

Been watching some old 'Uta Doki' clips and I was surprised to see some Pinoy music connections:
Nakazawa Yuko - ANAK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2WlrXDtiuI#)

Originally sung by local Folk singer Freddie Aguilar, and the highest selling record (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anak_%28song%29) in Philippine Music history.
Freddie Aguilar Anak (original version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n-2lPzH7Do#ws)

Takahashi Ai & Horiuchi Takao - Beautiful Name (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xhu38s)

Godiego's 'Beautiful name' was remade/popularised in the Phils. by by APO Hiking Society as "Bawat Bata (Every Child)"

^ I only found out about the Godiego one last week

Some of the hits back in the 90's were actually adaptations of Japanese songs.

IKAW PA RIN by Ted Ito (w/ lyrics) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=108tw9YKKQ8#)

Manatsu no Kajitsu - Midsummer Fruit - English Lyrics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpXCUqZoQqU#)

Rimi Natsukawa -Mirai- (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwYnSnSm2Wc#)

Anak is one of the most well-known OPM songs, it has been translated in several languages. I like this song a lot too, almost makes me cry when I listen to it because the song's message can be applied to me. (i'm not a rebellious child but I feel like I didn't live up to my parents' expectations when I grew up :P)

Yes, Rivermaya is a Philippine band. I'm not very up to date with the current OPM scene so I'm not sure if they are still as active now and I haven't heard much from them after Rico Blanco left. I like You'll be safe Here too lol. If you can understand tagalog lyrics, I would recommend the following songs: Kisapmata, Himala, Ulan, Awit ng Kabataan; for English song(s): 214, Bring me Down

Ok, so since there's been some action in here the last month, I'm gonna ask a question.  I'm trying to get some of my coworkers into some of the popular stuff, Eraserheads, Rivermaya, PNE, Spongecola, etc. but I have no idea where to get any music.  Does anyone have anything they can share, or know where I can find decent quality rips?  Any help will do, thanks.

Can't get 1995 out of my head.

^you can find rips of the more popular stuff on public trackers like "thepiratebay" or "kickass.to"

there used to more sources for OPM downloads (music blogs, forums), but they've pretty much dried up in recent years.

Kolateral damage: Rap album takes on the war on drugs
Quote
BACKED BY two years of research into the Philippines’ ongoing drug war led by President Rodrigo R. Duterte, Kolateral is a 12-track rap album that includes the numbers, the stories, and the effects of the war on drugs.

The album is created by Sandata — an artist’s collective which includes activist rappers BLKD and Calix, playwright and screenwriter Mixkaela Villalon, and researchers Nastassja Quijano, Abbey Pangilinan, and Ica Fernandez.

“Isasabuhay, mga salitang pumapaslang / Nakatago sa mata ng publiko ang makinarya ng pagtokhang,” says the album’s first single, “Makinarya.” The album not only lays bare the effects of the drug war but also force the listener to listen to the people whose relatives were killed in the ongoing war on drugs.

“Kolateral is a 12-track album featuring various Filipino artists, where each track is backed by real data and narratives on the Philippines Drug War. It is the product of two years’ worth of research and artistic collaboration. The data that informs the songs have been gathered from media reports and key informant interview at the front lines of the Drug War,” Ms. Quijano said in a Facebook post on June 13.

The tracks are not only poignant but stingingly visceral as in several songs, like “Makinarya,” one can hear gunshots and cries of grief. In “Papag” one hears a child talking about the death of his father at the hands of the police. “Distansya,” meanwhile, tells the real-life story of a domestic worker in Kuwait whose sick son was shot dead after being named a drug dealer.

“Sometimes they forget that we’re also humans,” Ms. Quijano noted in her Facebook post about the track, “Giyera na Bulag.”

“Real ‘numbers’ your face. ‘One corpse is already too many!’” she said about the track “Pagsusuma,” quoting a line from the song.

Kolateral is available for streaming and download on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. The album is also available on Spotify. — ZBC

I don't listen to new OPM much. 'Modern' favorites like IV of Spades and Ben&Ben aren't my type.
I love songs like Sayo by Silent Sanctuary and KLWKN by Music Hero.

Lately, though, THIS is the OPM I've been listening to. Istg I listen to this unironically
