There are bound to be any musicians here who share my interest in gear XD This topic is to discuss the stuff what makes Scandal sound the way they sound. I'm into guitars myself, but if anyone wants to add some drums, amplifier or more guitar info, go ahead! :)
Haruna's Gear
Main guitar: Fender Telecaster, black with maple fretboard and pearloid pickguard.
I think this is a USA model (22 frets) with a non-stock pickguard.
Other guitars:
- Fender Telecaster, black with rosewood fretboard (used in Shoujo S PV):
- Fender Stratocaster, black with maple fretboard:
Looks like it has those Lace Sensor pick-ups. it's not a Clapton strat, is it?!
Mami's Gear
Main guitar: Fender Stratocaster, white with stickers.
Other guitars:
- Fender Stratocaster, white with rosewood fretboard:
I THINK this is a different one than the stickers one.. but I'm not 100% sure on that. I'll figure it out for sure sooner or later.
- Gibson Double Cutaway, white with black pickguard and P90 pick-ups:
- Gibson (?) Double Cutaway, white with no pickguard:
Tomomi's Gear
Main Bass Guitar: Fender Jazz Bass, red with rosewood fretboard.
Other Basses:
- Fender Jazz bass.. 70's model? Sunburst with neck-binding:
Fender (or possibly Squier) Precision Bass, white with black pickguard (used in Shoujo S PV):

Mami seems to like the ESP Alexi Laiho Special Edition XD
(http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2112/naamloosrn.jpg) (http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6036/alexi600se.th.jpg) (http://img18.imageshack.us/i/alexi600se.jpg/)
I love V-shaped guitars and would love to see her play them :P
...wait a second, the pinstripes are different! That means it's a ripoff or maybe an Edwards model or something
-
Great thread idea :thumbup
Mami seems to like the ESP Alexi Laiho Special Edition XD
Wait, what? Alexi Laiho the Finnish guy? :huhuh
-
Alexi Laiho, God of Metal, Children of Bodom frontman/lead guitarist, Finnish guy. Yes
I actually met him, hugged him (no homo haha) and had a beer with him XD That was a great day. He's a great guy.
-
The pink pinstriped V she's holding is an Edwards model. The pink model you posted is actually a USA model with a different body shape.
Mami's white guitar is interesting. It looks like the strat is equipped with the S1 switching system, according to that sticker. However, the only S/S/S strats that come with that setup are the American Deluxe series. As far as I know, none of them came in that color combo (body color + pickguard) she's using. You could say she swapped the pickguard and transferred the sticker, but the sticker is attached to the clear protective film that comes on guitars. It would be a big PITA to do something like that.
The one black strat that Haruna is holding does not have noiseless pickups. I believe you meant to say it has Lace Sensor pickups. Clapton did run those for awhile in his strats, and I'd venture to say it is most likely a Clapton strat. To be sure, you can check the headstock for Clapton's signature.
-
Actually, the one I posted is the Korean LTD, but I get your point :) Btw, all ESPs are made in Japan these days. Damn copyright laws.. his Jackson Rhoads was way cooler.. but that's getting off-topic :P
I'll definitely keep a look out for better pics of the guitars, so we can see what's what. They definitely like modding their stuff in term of changing pickguards. I came across another strat, which had a humbucker in the bridge, which could mean it could be just another strat or they (further) modded one of the s/s/s models.
Lace Sensor! Thanks, I couldn't come up with the name. I hope some decent headstock pics will show up.
btw, I've also seen her playing a BC Rich Beast  For you 'guitar n00bs', it looks like this:
(http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/3493/bcrichbeastfrplatinumprt.th.jpg) (http://img42.imageshack.us/i/bcrichbeastfrplatinumprt.jpg/)
edit:
I am seriously GASsing for a telecaster with pearloid pickguard... (gas = gear aquisition syndrome)
-
  interesting..though i guess it really doesn't what they play, even if they just :shakeit:...um.. :fap
knew about them cuz they're all over the youtube links by those horny HK dudes~~
i'm a certified guitar freak too, nice analysis there :thumbsup
-

I didn't bother clicking the picture. I just went by the thumbnail. XD Also, when I said "USA model," I meant it was marketed towards the US; I didn't mean it was made here. Probably should have clarified. :sweatdrop: (and yes, I actually loved his Rhoads models way more)
Edit: The second Jazz bass w/ the block inlays and binding is a 70s era model. Block inlays started in like '71 or something.
http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-70s-Jazz-Bass?sku=519790&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=201312117 (http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-70s-Jazz-Bass?sku=519790&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=201312117)
That one white Gibson Les Paul Double Cutaway guitar, I almost wanna say that's the same guitar. I think she just took off the pickguard (or put it back on, depending on how you wanna time the pictures).
-
Thanks for the bass info. I really don't know much about basses so all the input is welcome :)
I think you may be right about the Gibson as well. I have a lot of unwatched Scandal footage, so I may be able to discover some more details about the gear later.

Haruna's Yamaha Pacifica:
(http://picroda.jphip.com/japanese/t/jphip00007.jpg) (http://picroda.jphip.com/japanese/jphip00007.jpg)
This may be one of her first guitars. She used it in those street lives before they were famous.
And she got this nifty telecaster, which she thinks is "super cute":
She writes in spoken language on her blog a lot which is giving me trouble translating it.
-
(http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/1944/rina091003.jpg)
I only recognize the Boss Digital Delay... :nervous
-
Boss TU-2, Boss DD-x (could be anything from 2 to 7. Most likely a 3 or 6, though), Electro-Harmonix Little Big Muff, unknown blue pedal, Fulltone Fulldrive 2, unknown looper/switcher board.
-
^Thanks for the input! It's a blog picture, so I don't have any bigger pictures (at the moment). I went to a guitar store to see if they have a similar looking looper, but no dice. They didn't have any decent Telecasters either... which is probably for the best since I don't really need one haha.
-
^yes, here's another pic:

Bigger guitar pic:
(http://picroda.jphip.com/japanese/t/jphip00184.jpg) (http://picroda.jphip.com/japanese/jphip00184.jpg)
1. I don't see Clapton's signature, but it may be invisible due to the lightning/angle?
2. A better look @ Mami's decorations.
-
Look closely and you can see the very faint outline of the signature. 99% sure it's a Clapton strat. In the other picture, Mami's plugging into what looks like a JCM800 2203/2204 horizontal input, but it's very hard to tell.
-
That's the newer model. She has the older model. The signature also changed between the older and newer models. Here's a picture for reference showcasing the newer signature on the headstock that you posted and the older signature:
-
Couple of updates thanks to the pictures posted in the SCANDAL Picture Thread:
I previously said I thought the Marshall was a 2203/2204 horizontal input. I said this because it looked like there were two input jacks, and she was plugged into the left-most one. However, looking at the latest pictures and re-checking the small blog pic, I think it's a DSL50 or 100. The black part that I thought was the extra input jack is probably just part of the input cable that I'm seeing at an angle. It would make more sense because, if it was a JCM800, she would be plugging into the low input. That's not a typical thing to do, especially with Marshalls.
A friend of mine thinks the blue pedal on Mami's board is a BFJ Sea Blue EQ pedal. I have a hard time believing that, considering how boutique it is, but it's a step closer towards figuring out WTF it really is. Those things are expensive as hell, too.
Onto more gear!
Mami:
Marshall DSL50 or 100 w/ Straight Marshall 4x12 (most likely JCM900)
Boss SD-1
Blue Boss pedal w/ 3 knobs in line (CE-3?)
Unknown green pedal
Haruna:
Yamaha Pacifica
Peavey Bandit Combo
Roland EV5 Expression Pedal
Ibanez TS9DX
Tomomi:
Warwick Cube 100
Yellow/Orange Boss pedal w/ 4 knobs (ODB-3?)
Roland EV5 Expression Pedal
-
ehhhh I thought Haruna used orange amps
I'm just going by the pics that were recently posted:

I've seen Haruna with a Fender amp as well. The Orange amps occasionally make an appearance:
-
Grim pics, but it looks like an Orange Rocker 30 with a PPC 4x12
-
^thanks! Yeah it's from a pv, I couldn't find any better pics.

And the bass and tele in the shoujo S pvs are most likely squiers, since they smashed them in the PB
-
Yup, SD-1 (or OD-3) and CE-3. DSL50 or 100 in the background with a 1960B 4x12.
-
The fender bass that TOMOMI use, (the red one) it has a multi-colored stripe. Is that a spec. model o just a customization? (i guess it's the 2nd option, but never investigated about that =P)
-
I'm guessing she added it later as I don't recall any Jazz basses with that stripe. That stripe was popular on the old Fender Mustang guitars and basses.
-
Haha, I really don't know a thing about guitar makes and models, but I'm just dropping in here to say that I love that one white guitar of Mami's, with all the sparkly sequins and beads and stuff on it. It's so colorful and well-designed. :inlove:
-
^Fender Stratocaster FTW! XD
I'm finally convinced that the black strat is indeed a Clapton model. I still had doubts, but I saw some footage and the sig was clearly visible. You were right Code, I should've known :)

Ooh, is that what it's called? I dun really care, but it's just so amazingly pretty and that design is so intricate! All the designs are placed so carefully, it must've taken her a while to get those embellishments on just right!
(http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab328/discopix-14/2643115461_3f524cb623.jpg) (http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab328/discopix-14/2643953368_3228aae16b.jpg)
I'm also a fan of that fuzzy guitar strap Mami uses often~ (she has awesome guitar stuff, doesn't she?)
-
She did the design/pattern herself. It reminds me of those decorated Japanese cellphones. The guitar strap is a Levy strap with that fur/shag material. The new M8SF-WHT is real close.

Obviously she designed it herself. :P Like hell anyone would sell an awesome guitar so girl-ed out. And of course I could tell that was unique. I had also said that it must've taken a while to get everything on there so neatly. But yeah, it does remind me of Japanese cell phones. >w< So many stickers and sequins and buttons and such that you wonder where the phone is under all of that embellishment. XD
And thanks for that link! I think that strap is most definitely close to what Mami has!
The one holding the bunch together, in the center. M8SF-WHT~ <333

Well, they do make Hello Kitty guitars, so I wouldn't say her design is too girly.

*thud* They do?! That's awesome! But why am I not earth-shakingly surprised? Sanrio has stopped at much more insane merchandise than that. But wow... I want to look this up! :O
-
I honestly considered buying one of these, but it was really, REALLY bad  Upgrades would've made it too expensive.

i want to copy mami's pedal board...but i still don't have money to buy anything on her pedal board
i think the smaller blue pedal is a BEHRINGER PH-9 PHASER PEDAL

^makes sense, since there's some phaser in Shoujo S.
You could also go the easy/cheaper route and copy this set-up from the old days:

Boss OD-3 and CE-3 from what i can tell.

Marshall amps.... *shudder*
Ye I found a company in the Uk that makes flightcase pedalboard bases that look a heck of a lot like Mami's newer pedalboard. Not identical but very similar, and a good design. I'm going to order myself some when I get a collection of pedals built up, only got the Boss DS-1 at the moment :)

There is a sale of DSL100 amps at a nearby guitar store :panic: I'm kinda tempted, but luckily I don't really need it :)
Here's a pic from a magazine which actually names Mami's pedals:
Thanks to lambchopsuey!
edit: Boss OC3 octaver... I don't think I ever noticed the use of an octaver in any Scandal songs.
Carl Martin Hydra Boost... I use my Boss EQ-7 for that.
In the end, we're all better off getting our own unique sound. Mami's set-up is undergoing changes and a lot of pedals are very similar anyway :P Still, it's fun to analyze what she uses haha.
-
i was fascinated by mami's black guitar with the custom paint job on it
and i searched internet to find out who built or painted it so i found these links:
http://gallery.radical-brats.com/?eid=1255155 (http://gallery.radical-brats.com/?eid=1255155)
http://www.radical-brats.com/info.html (http://www.radical-brats.com/info.html)
i think they are the people who painted mami's guitar(i can't understand japanese so i don't know what they are saying on the page)
here are some pics on the link:
it's a Fender American Standard Stratocaster HSS
i think they changed the pickguard and the pickups on it...
-
Excellent find!! To be honest, I disliked the paint scheme, until I saw the guitar being used in the new PV. It looks great.
The website doesn't mention any interesting new info. Just that there's only one of these guitars in the world haha. But not for long, now that we have detailed pics and can replicate it
Btw, I had no idea fat strats are routed to fit a humbucker in the neck position!
Here are the same pics, but bigger:

^I'd love to have been that guitar, complete upskirt.....
LOL same.
-
Mami's guitars are so stylish. Love both the one with stickers and especially this new one!
Rina's pink drums are really nice, I'm surprised she needs so many cymbals.
And... I feel like hunting for a pearloid pickguard to replace my tortoiseshell one in my Fender Jazz Bass now! Although I feel it'd just look odd with a 3TSB. =p
I've noticed Haruna likes to use guitars with a maple fretboard. I'd love to try one of those one day; its probably a lot easier to care for than rosewood, right?
p.s. Anyone know what effects Tomomi/Haruna uses? Especially Tomomi =)
-
^Welcome!
I'd say rosewood is easier to take care of, because maple gets dirty more easily. Or at least, it looks dirtier faster.
Maple has a brighter sound than rosewood. I love maple fretboards myself :thumbup
Effects Tomomi uses? Hmm.. none? :nervous I don't know, but I never noticed any.
-
Well I was more concerned about the humidity where I stay, always around 70-100%.
Rosewood gets moldy real fast here, so I have to keep it oiled up to prevent that. Maple is lacquered... so not a problem here for that...
I was curious about their effects... cos I saw in this picture... Tomomi and Haruna look like they have pedalboards too. =)
http://img23.imageshack.us/i/86059524.jpg/ (http://img23.imageshack.us/i/86059524.jpg/) By lambchopsuey
Then again I know almost nothing about pedals... never had to use one... so...
-
Too bad the pic is kinda small. My guess is that the white pedal on all the girl's board is the Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner. It could also be a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor, but I think the tuner is more likely, since that's what Mami uses as well. No idea about the other stuff though
-
Rina posted a different shot of her drums on their blog.

Mami blogged about this Gretsch White Falcon being the most expensive thing she ever bought in her life.
I can't find a way to link to that post directly but if you filter their blog to only show her posts, it'll (currently) be on the third page. Or use the calendar. The post is dated 2010-08-06. It doesn't have any other pics or specs of the guitar.
After reading that, I got curious and tried to find out what it costs. Looks like online shops in Japan have you fork over at least 370000 Yen for it. :O
-
^Nice find!
Yeah those Gretsch guitars go for big money. In the US they start at around 3000 dollar.
Pretty interesting that Mami is into these types of guitars. Pretty different from her regular stratocaster.
-
Cool Guitar!I Would Love to see Mami use that during live performances.but i don't know if it would fit for some of their songs...
the gretsch guitar website said that it is "THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GUITAR MADE!"....you could get the most beautiful guitar made for over $4000 :shocked
-
that guitar is absolutely gorgeous!!! Just like Mami! :)
-
Oh wow. The White Falcon is a beautiful guitar. Mami must be rollin in the cash
I'm curious to see which songs she'll use it on. It may be primarily used in the studio, but it would be pretty awesome if she brings it out at a live.
-
I would never bring a 4k dollar guitar to a live  I think she just bought her for herself... I don't know, just me speculating.
-
Words cannot describe how badly I want to see Tomomi's new bass in person.

Not sure if I ever answered it, but that looper/switcher that Mami uses is a Providence PEC-2. Dave @ Rack Systems just did a pedalboard for John Shanks with that switcher on it, and it reminded me of Mami's pedalboard. XD

In Sydney, I saw the White Falcon being sold at a high end music store for AUD$6,000. And I dropped in every now and again to like ogle it but it was sold today. I was looking for it, but assumed it was already gone when it wasn't in its usual spot. When I was trying out one of the guitars, I saw that they were looking for a case for it, and almost cried when I saw the prospective owner holding it.
But instruments exist to make music, so it'd be a shame if it sat around in all of its $6,000 glory. T.T
