Nintendo revealed the much anticipated new console and as expected, it is a console/handheld hybrid.

Tech details are scarce but as seen in the reveal trailer, the physical console unit can be detached from the docking unit and can be taken away to play wherever you so wish, carrying game progress with you. It's almost like what the Wii U should have been. You're able to use a pro controller and each half of the controller can be taken off, turning them into a simple gamepad for local co-op play. It uses cartridges rather than CD's, meaning it is not backwards compatible. It's also due for release in March 2017.

The reveal trailer shows off Zelda : Breath of the Wild, as expected, but also Splatoon, what looks like the Skyrim Remaster release coming soon for PS4 and Xbone and a new 3D Mario game. In addition, the following third party developers have been lined up for support.

Considering there are no 'gimmicks' with the console like the Wii and Wii U, you would expect third party support to be easier and better than for the Wii U so I hope the console gets more third party support this time. From Software is interesting, imagine being able to play Dark Souls 3 wherever I go. :drool:

It's early days and nearer the time to March 2017 we'll get more details but for now my only concerns are battery life, what the performance of the game is like on docked console vs handheld and the games lineup at launch and beyond. No real killer apps for me just yet (unless they announce a new Metroid...). But I think it looks good, definitely worth watching.
