BANGKOK, April 4 — Thailand’s military-appointed government blocked access to YouTube and several other Internet sites on Wednesday in a crackdown on material that denigrates the country’s monarch. (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/05/business/worldbusiness/05tube.html?ei=5088&en=d4c3824714b7b322&ex=1333425600&adxnnl=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&adxnnlx=1175767766-kjIeV2CHVOm8ajBHB/T/VQ)
Sounds like a real bummer for Thai comp geeks.
-
That would suck, but I'm sure the tech savvy Thai nerds will be able to get around the ban somehow. Stick it to the MAN Thai citizens.
-
Seems a bit extreme. Censoring never really works out.
-
Oh noes, I hope my country won't do the same...
EDIT:
Pornnapa Wongakanit contributed reporting.
Now I am really laughing .
-
^ Same here. I feel sorry for some thai comp nerd but yeah, They can do something about it.
-
I agree, censoring sometimes just makes things worse.
And we all know the super tech-savvy dudes will find a way around this somehow :P
-
Do they not know that forbidding people to do something is just going to want to make them do it more?
The Thai computer geeks will figure something out. they are, after all, computer geeks. THEY HAVE POWERS...oh, uh, I mean, they're smart, they'll be able to work around it.

I've had some youtube videos come up with a message saying something like "This video isn't licenced for viewing in your country." (I'm in the UK) and it won't let me watch them. I just use keepvid.com and it let's me download them!
-
I hope it will unblock in a few days
I want to watch Naruto !!
-
Censorship on the internet....BLASPHEMY!!! ;D
-
i hope that my country not do that.......
-
I am from Thailand. I can bypass and watch YouTube. I support the censorship of webpage insulting monarchy, however. YouTube and Google self-censorship for Communist China. Most Thai Citizen want to preserve Monarchy Institution. IF Google is fair and don't self-censorship everywhere in the world, I will accept that.
There is censorship in China, Western Germany, so internet is not for free afterall. If one shout Bomb in US, he probably will be in a lot of trouble and get deport from US.
I hope that Thai government learns to censorship individual page (about Monarchy insulting) in YouTube. I will be happy then.

I think Thai gov't was scared of THE EVIL SUPER VILLAIN!! PHEAR DIS CHANNEL! >:D

Well, it is not about fear or not.
My opinion is that UK monarchy was overexposed. The result is a weaken institution. So we want to control access to Thai Monarchy.
Since monarchy in Thailand has no direct power, in order for it to survive -- Constitution and Thai People must protect it. Monarchy is very beneficial to Thailand, so Thai People help protect it at this history period.

So.. they seriously 'banned' youtube because of ONE video?! Isn't that just a little ridiculous?
Wouldn't it just have been easier to ban that one video?
-
The saddest thing is that before this controversy, many of non-Thais didn't know anything about the Thai king or the Thai military government.
Their first exposure to both topics was the whole Youtube mess. So now we see copycats uploading similar videos making fun of the king, for no other reason other than to spite the government censors.
The government has really shot itself in the foot - it wanted to protect the monarchy, but by associating the monarchy with its own incompetent policies, it's actually aroused anger against the monarchy.

Yeah, I understand that Thais respect their king a lot, but banning an entire site just because of one video is really going overboard IMHO...
-
what the sad news.....
-
methinks those in 'need' of the old 'tube would eventually find a way...
one thing for certain, this would NOT stop the pants in thai-land to dropped! so rest assure, daigong ;D
-
hping that it won't do in my country ;D
banned because i videos???? does anybody have that video or the link???
wanna watch it........ what kind of video is that???
-
Google said that it will teach Thai government to block individual video and webpages. It has been one week already and Google still do not give the needed technical know-how.
-
lol I don't know why people are so Anti-Youtube.
I mean hello, free PR. Especially if you make it into the top 20 most viewed.
-
I live in Thailand.
I don't understand what Thai gonernment is trying to do.
They cencorship not only Youtube but also other internet sites..........

No one will -ever- be deported from the US for saying something. Doesn't matter what is said. Oh and wtf, this sux for Thailand. I sometimes take for granted the liberties we have over here in America.

I've found this site when I was wandering around, I think it's possible to access YouTube (and any other banned site?) from it: http://youtubeproxy.org/ (http://youtubeproxy.org/).
I don't think this is that bad compared to China banning YouTube and Wikipedia. It's for a similar reason too, if I remember correctly. Does anyone know if the ban in China has been lifted yet? I don't keep up with the news x_X. But anyways, banning one of the most viewed sites in the world just because of a video is pretty silly.
-
They shouldn't block Youtube. They should just report the videos that they don't want to circulate on the web. But I guess once posted at Youtube, it could be converted easily and save on the hard drive.

Government reported to YouTube to take this down. But YouTube refused to do so. So Government blocked whole YouTube. Just tit-for-tat. Insulting head of state is not offensive enough for YouTube. Too bad - different culture, different priority.
-
Good example what happens when the old coots run the world.
I hope Thailand gets it democracy back soon so they can vote these guys off.
-
lol. Like other govt would do it differently. Taksin would prolly say "youtube is not my father!"

From waht I heard, youtube has given in to China and went with their rules. So they've lost some points in that in some people's eyes. And maybe they're trying to gain it back using this case.
What's so hard about deleting 1 clip? Not like they never deleting anything before. They've been deleting clips left and right and even accounts. At first there was just one clip that the govt reported to youtube. They refused to take it down. After that, more clips start to appear. So banning the whole site may be the best solution.
-
exactly, what thai's govern thinking about banning youtube???
this is just free video streaming and i've got many anime from that....
lucky me i'm not in thailand ;D ;D
really...really sucks XDXD
-
way too extreme to ban youtube over a video of some1 spray painting over their kings picture

They aren't getting enough Thai money. That's why deleting one clip is s too difficult. I don't like giving in to China either... But I hope they someday realize that banning Internet sites doesn't really solve anything.

Luckily, I am not in Thai.
