Watch out superman
Kryptonite discovered in mine
Kryptonite is no longer just the stuff of fiction feared by caped superheroes.
A new mineral matching its unique chemistry - as described in the film Superman Returns - has been identified in a mine in Serbia. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6584229.stm)

Too bad they can't name it Kryptonite.
it will be formally named Jadarite when it is described in the European Journal of Mineralogy later this year.
Jadar is the name of the place where the Serbian mine is located.
Couldn't they have named it Kal-El (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kal-el)ite or something then? :k-thrilled:
-
Wouldntcha know they'd name it something geek like that.
-
So we can expect a superhero to show up claiming to be from the planet Jadar then :D
-
Sorry but how does anyone even know the properties of kryptonite anyway????
-
Lol, that's funny. I bet comic fans are gonna flock to serbia in hopes to nab their own kryptonite... well the hardcore ones anyway XD
-
*flies off to serbia* xD
"Towards the end of my research I searched the web using the mineral's chemical formula - sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide - and was amazed to discover that same scientific name, written on a case of rock containing kryptonite stolen by Lex Luther from a museum in the film Superman Returns.
what a coincidence!? maybe it's real kryptonite after all? xD
-
"The new mineral does not contain fluorine (which it does in the film) and is white rather than green but, in all other respects, the chemistry matches that for the rock containing kryptonite."
-
??? sooo.... it's a real rock that matches a fake rock containing a fake remnant of an alien planet from a movie?
-
i better be careful i dont wanna get near it, why? cause i might lose my super powers...

I wonder if it would have been green if it did contain fluorine.
