Title: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: Fracture on May 19, 2007, 06:15:10 AM
Announced just a few minutes ago at Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational in Seoul.

It took them nine years, but they finally got around to it.  Now, where the hell is Diablo 3?

IGN's coverage of the event - click me (http://pc.ign.com/articles/788/788627p1.html)

Also, there are some screen shots (http://media.pc.ign.com/media/850/850126/imgs_1.html)

It's going to be hard to replace the original. The first one is the most balanced RTS game out there. Even after 9 years, it is still very popular.

That looks pretty sweet, though the graphics are outdated as usual. I thought I was looking at a slightly altered Supreme Commander.

Added a vid to the first post (is it really safe to smoke inside your suit like that? ???).  The CG looks nice, but  the screen shots do look kinda last-gen.

When is the game coming out?
At this point, it's too early to provide an initial estimate on the release date. As with all Blizzard games, we will take as much time as needed to ensure the game is as fun, balanced, and polished as possible.

It was about a time!

It didn't look like outdated graphics to me, but I haven't played any RTS after Tiberian Sun. I hope the balance and gameplay are as good as they were in the first game.

How can you be sure of that. It looks the same as the first one with new 3D graphics. One thing I'm looking for is new innovation for RTS. Heck, they still have the same 3 races. I hope they prove me wrong as the first one is just about as perfect as it can get. Otherwise, people wouldn't be still playing it today.

I know it's still early to tell. I agree with you too on having a different approach on RTS but since the game won't be coming out anytime soon, who know's what surprise Blizzard will offer in Star Craft 2.

Ive been waiting for years for a SC2 game to be released and now its a reality!!  I loved how they used a timeline on their website to promote the announcement of the game.

Although nothing is final, Blizzard mentioned they did not have any plans on adding a 4th race into the mix... which isnt as disappointing to me as to others.  I would love for them to include the rumored hybrid race, but in the end what made the original so successful was the fine-tuning in the balance of the gameplay.  If they can continue with their attention to detail... I'll be one happy gamer.  :D

I absolutely loved the original game.
i was quite young when i played it (probably about 9) and i temporarily became slightly obsessed by it.
I loved the zerg and wrote names of zerg stuff on my pencilcase and made up little stories relating to them :p

It wasn't quite as bad as my description makes it sound though.

If anyone is interested, you can go to blizzard.com to "opt-in" to be selected to test a beta release. Blizzard won't say when they are releasing a beta however. Like everything they do.

Post by: RoyMoy on November 20, 2009, 04:49:06 AM
I had recently discovered the Korean pro-gaming scene. I like watching the amateur english commentaries, I think the matches are just as entertaining as some sports broadcasts. One of my favorite commentators in particular is grethsc. He takes casual starcraft replays and commentates them for comedic purposes. Though I think familiarity with Starcraft and it's mechanics is required to truly enjoy watching the commentaries. Though that's probably true with any sport.

To be honest I'm not looking forward to Starcraft 2 as much when I heard about the LAN thing. To me there is no good justification reason to remove LAN play. The only reasons I can think of, are self-serving ones. Controlling the multiplayer experience by forcing you to use battle.net and as a dubiously effective measure at reducing piracy. So I might hold for a few years after all 3 games (it's going to be split up into 3 parts if you have not heard already) get released in an inevitable "battle chest" pack.

I will however be fully looking forward to the commentaries and seeing how those hardcore pro-koreans wrap their heads around the new system.  :)

PSA

The closed public beta is now LIVE and as many as 30k (suspected) keys are now in circulation. There are no NDAs. Meaning that all the beta testers can talk about their experience, post screens/videos, etc without getting into trouble with Blizzard. Videos and screenshots are popping up everywhere. Check it out.

Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1/Windows 7
2.2 Ghz Pentium IV or equivalent AMD Athlon processor
1 GB system RAM/1.5 GB for Vista and Windows 7
128 MB NVidia GeForce 6600 GT/ATI Radeon 9800 PRO video card
1024x768 minimum display resolution
4 GB free hard space (Beta)
Broadband connection

See the link for further details.

The date has been set for July 27 for United States, Canada, Europe, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Mexico, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

You can get a pre-order at gamestop or amazon (not totally sure about amazon) you can get a beta key. Though I heard it's US only. Personally I prefer to wait for all the kinks to be worked out by launch day. The mac client has pretty bad performance compared to the windows version so I'm not going to bother right now. The limited edition package is a little tempting though.  :yep:

I think I heard that this beta is only until the end of the month, then they're taking it offline for polishing and fixing stuff.

After that, gotta wait till July, huh?

Aw, seems like you're right. :/

July isn't too far away... in reality...

Edit: Making this into the Starcraft thread. Any proleague fans? The latest news about the fixed games was pretty shocking.

Post by: boykun on May 22, 2010, 09:51:27 PM
blizzard just reset everything on the beta. Seems like league placements were changed around. Also 3v3 and 4v4 games are enabled. I already lost 3 out of my 5 single placement matches  though i can blame one on a DC.

I dont really follow any leagues. But ive been watching the HDH invitational that husky and hdstarcraft are casting. Finals will be tomorrow with IdrA, the only American in any Korean team, i think.. vs. very oldschool sc player WhiteRa. Gonna be a pretty intense Zerg vs. Protoss game, but I think IdrA is gonna take it, though I really don't want him to.

The new patch and whatever they've done has been shit. For the past two days I haven't been able to finish a game because the server craps out and I get dropped. Sometimes the server even times out when I'm searching for a game. I guess it's to be expected since its beta  But it ran so well before the new patch.
I hope they iron things out soon. I'm trying to get as many games played before the beta ends. Blizzard is supposedly bringing the beta back a week or two before release for finalization stuff.

Funny enough, I woke up this morning to a beta invite. I wouldn't have minded receiving this several weeks ago, but whatever works for Blizz. Ran a few co-op games with just AI. Digging the presentation and graphics, though I was quite surprised when I experienced some FPS dips on moderate settings.

Never been much for RTS, especially multiplayer therein, wish there was some story mode available :sweatdrop:

I'm playing 2v2 with zigg most of the time. zigg won the game for us last night when our opponents (2 zergs) went all in but failed to transition to midgame. They managed to kill me off but zigg cleaned house.

Well fuck, I totally forgot about the region lock. :/ Guess I'm the only one in the EU server in this thread. lol.

Anyway, I completed the campaign and redid some missions on hard. I think I'll have to do another playthrough, though, for the merc/upgrade achievements. I also did some 3v3 with two buddies, we ended up in bronze league with like 2-3 or something. A good sign showing you're turtling too long is when you get attacked by 10+ battle cruisers.

I'm in the UK so I could only play on the EU servers too, but I emailed blizzard and they changed my key to a US one so I can play on the US servers. You should email them and ask to change server if your not to fussed about the EU one!

Apart from special ability,  what's the different between Ghost & Spectre ?   :?

Which one is better ?  :w00t:

I went with Nova and her ghosts on my first run, but I never actually had much use of them. The spectres on the other hand can be of help at times with their mindblast thing. And as far as I know, their abilities is the only real difference.

While we're at the subject:

Spectre > Ghost
Hercules > Predator
Science Vessel > Raven

I'm in the UK so I could only play on the EU servers too, but I emailed blizzard and they changed my key to a US one so I can play on the US servers.

I'm considering this, but how's the latency and stuff? I'd hate to be playing a game with a 1-2 sec lag.

I went with spectres too. Pretty much got spectre, hercules, and science vessel, but I've never actually used them. Hercules is too damn expensive lol.

We need to get some games going. I never see you guys online, lol.
It's tough playing on platinum league, lol. I always lose at late game macro stages.

^ nice Lajon :D

2vs2 a bit with words as usual today. 3-1 fuck yeah \o/ We think our losing streak stop lol. In one game i manage to warp in a mother(fucking)ship. Wipe out the opponent base with carriers/phoenix/mothership with some ground army. Must be my best game since i play it lol. Now we are climbing the bronze ladder like a boss.

Situation Report: Patch 1.1 and Beyond

Quote
Greetings, citizens of the Koprulu sector! StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is celebrating its one-month anniversary and we’re extremely excited to witness the amazing community that’s come together around the game. To that end, we want you to know we are hard at work on the first feature and balance patch, and expect to have it completed and available by the middle of September. Patch 1.1 will contain a number of improvements including additional mod features, Editor improvements and bug fixes, some custom game improvements, support for NVIDIA’s 3D Vision, and more. We'd also like to share some specific plans for this patch with you.

To begin, we've heard a lot of feedback from our global community about standardized hotkey options. We're happy to announce that in patch 1.1 we are going to make the Standard (US) and Standard for Lefties (US) hotkey options available in all regions.

Balance Changes

We have several balance changes in store. One general change we're making is that friendly units will no longer provide vision after being killed. Enemy units previously revealed will no longer be targetable. Now let's break down the additional balance changes we're implementing.

Maps

We're going to be adding destructible rocks to the Desert Oasis map to make natural expansions easier to protect. In addition, the center map watchtower area is being narrowed.

Protoss

We have two key changes in mind for the zealot: the build time is being increased from 33 to 38 seconds, and the warpgate cooldown is being increased from 23 to 28 seconds. Zealot rushes are currently too powerful at various skill levels, particularly those that rely on rapidly assaulting an enemy base from nearby "proxy" gateways. We feel the window players have to scout for and fend off this rush is too small. We also want to address the problem of protoss being able to dump minerals a bit too quickly with the combination of warpgates and Chrono Boost.

Terran

There are several changes in the works for terrans. Reapers against zerg are stronger than expected. Due to the zealot build time increase, reapers would be a bit problematic in combination with proxy barracks, bunkers, and/or marauders against protoss. Therefore, we have decided to increase the build time of reapers as well from 40 to 45 seconds. Fast reaper + bunker, or fast marine + bunker rushes are problematic against zerg. Although this rush would never outright destroy the zerg player, we feel zerg suffers too much of a disadvantage from either having to cancel the fast expansion, or getting trapped inside the main base for too long, so we are also increasing the bunker build time from 30 to 35 seconds.

Siege tanks in large numbers are performing too well in all matchups. In the mid- to late-game, siege tanks are too dominant against all ground units. We want a small set of light and unarmored ground units to perform better against siege tanks. With this in mind, we're changing the Siege Mode damage of the siege tank from 50 to 35, +15 vs. armored; to correspond with this, damage upgrades will be changed from +5 to +3, +2 vs. armored. This change reduces the base damage of the siege tank against light and unarmored units, as well as the splash damage.

Battlecruisers currently lack good counters from the ground and still perform very well against a wide array of unit types. We're aware that it is not easy to get battlecruisers out for the cost, but at the same time, it is possible in both 1v1s and team games to create stalemate situations to bring them out. Overall, we feel that battlecruisers are too strong for their cost, and the terran-forced stalemate situations are causing less interesting gameplay. We will be lowering their damage against ground units from 10 to 8.

Zerg

Ultralisk damage is being decreased from 15, +25 vs. armored to 15, +20 vs. armored. This reduction is comparable to the changes being made to the battlecruiser and siege tank. Like the battlecruiser, ultralisks are simply too powerful for the cost, even though they are difficult to muster. Also, in combination with other units, ultralisks are difficult to counter from the ground. The ultralisk building attack (Ram) is being removed because the damage rate is too similar to its normal attack, which will be used against buildings instead. When ultralisks target tightly packed smaller buildings such as supply depots, the Ram attack is actually outputting considerably less overall damage than its normal attack, as Ram only hits a single target.

And Beyond...

We are reading your posts on the forums and creating lists of features and bugs to address in future patches. We have mid- to long-term plans to further evolve the Custom Game experience, and soon, enhance our social features with the addition of chat channels. We will be sharing more specific information in the coming weeks. As with all of our previous games, we will support StarCraft II for many years to come. Your feedback and participation is critical in making this not only the best game it can be, but also the most engaged gaming community in the world. We look forward to the implementation of patch 1.1, as well as sharing our plans for our future gameplay and Battle.net features.

We'll see you online!

Haha, I think idra real respond will likely be like that lol. Funny shit. But seriously, do protoss 4-gate is that hard to counter? I don't think that is a necessary nerf.
Title: Re: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: boykun on August 28, 2010, 11:44:15 PM
Agreed about the protoss 4-gate. You can easily prepare for it if scouted properly, especially for terran. zerg probably can get a bunch of spikes, lol.

I think last time they increased zealot build time in the beta, protoss had a hard time defending from early rushes.

edit: HuK won the MLG Raleigh tournament! Awesome play and series at the grand finals. He makes me want to switch to protoss.

I watch SC1 when I can, but I enjoy spectating SC2 much more.

I came in on the MSL Final's game just as the awards ceremony was starting and was sadface that I had missed the matches.
Title: Re: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: MisTicO on August 29, 2010, 12:08:26 PM
I love SC2 but I don't think that players know the game well enough to produce matches at the same level as SC1, but once players know the game better the matches will be better. So at the moment I still find SC1 more entertaining to watch. Even though I still watch SC2 more than SC1. I just hope that blizzard adds some units with the expansions that can produce those "oh shit" moments that we had in SC1 with reavers, spider mines, etc. If they don't I don't think that SC2 will ever be able to produce matches that are up to par with some the greatest matches of SC1.

Of course! Both games have their ups and downs in terms of spectating, but I definitely prefer SC1 over SC2, and I don't see the current Korean progamers convert to SC2 just yet.

Anyway, yesterday's final was pretty entertaining. I don't know if it was just me, but Jaedong looked overall tired throughout the games. Flash was no doubt the better player... disregarding his puzzling mistake in game 4. I especially liked the goliath/MM play he had going on which was fucking badass.

I watched the JD-Flash MSL final last night. Thought Jaedong was gonna come from behind and Flash was gonna choke. That was a quick bo5 compared to Flash's semis match against Fantasy

Aside from being gas heavy, I didn't understand why Zerg won't use guardians against mech builds until watching an old game of JD and Flash earlier where JD used guardians, mass goliaths still ate them.

There's still OSL so maybe JD can get even there. Flash arriving late yesterday might have caught Jaedong off guard

Here is some sad new for anyone planing on watching the GSL.

Quote
Hello everyone,

As the opening match for GSL approaches, we have recieved many questions related to live streams and VODs.

Previously many of you SC fans overseas have had trouble gaining access to live streams.

For GSL , all matches from Ro64 will be broadcasted on our Englsih homepage
www.gomtv.net (http://www.gomtv.net)
The renewal is being done as we speak, and you will soon be able to gain full information.
The site is not fully open yet, so we hope you understand that some of the functions are not active at the moment. Please wait with patience

As mentioned before, the streams will be provided live, commentated by Artosis(Dan) and Tasteless(Nick). They will use English SC2 client to observe the plays.

I am aware that I mentioned there is a possibilty we will provide low quality streams for free as we did for BW Gomtv Classic. However, for GSL all streams and VODs will be charged. There will be two versions, a high quality one and a low quality one. You can choose depending on your computer and internet performance.

Also you can buy tickets to watch the streams on your iphone. Understand that the streams and VODs will be provided to members only, which means you need to join and sign in for our service. The first games for every match will be provided without charge. For specific informations visit http://www.gomtv.net/2010gslopens1/premiumzone/Service.php (http://www.gomtv.net/2010gslopens1/premiumzone/Service.php)

Lastly, although we will keep track of your opinions here in TL, we would appreciate if you could write your feedback directly on our site. As we are just beginning our service overseas, such feedbacks are extremely valuable to us. The more information you post at www.gomtv.net (http://www.gomtv.net), the better improvements we can make for following seasons.

North American Access Coming in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Patch 1.1 (http://sea.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/72596)

Quote
We’re excited to announce that access to the North American Battle.net servers will be available following the release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Patch 1.1.0. With this patch, the in-game region selector will be made available so a separate download will not be necessary to access the NA region.

Activation Procedures

Once the new patch is available, you can log into the Battle.net Account Management at www.battle.net (http://www.battle.net) with your username and password.

After you have logged in, click “Account” in the upper left-hand corner of the site. Under “Your Game Accounts”, there will be an option to “Add Game” for the NA version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

To activate, just click “Add Game” and you will immediately have the NA license on your Battle.net Account.

The in-game region selector will be integrated into the StarCraft II client. You can choose which region to play in before logging into your Battle.net account.

IMPORTANT: Be advised that patching and maintenance takes place at different times in each region. As a result you might be temporarily unable to access SEA games if you download the latest patch by connecting to NA.

If you connect to the NA region with a new patch, you will be unable to play in SEA/ANZ until this region is updated to the new patch as well, typically a day later. Once all regions have been updated to the same patch this will no longer be an issue.

Please take this into account when deciding when and where you'll play during patch days.

Anyway did anyone follow the GSL? the final was awesome. FruitDealer/Cool was so... cool. I'm gonna start playing more Zerg in non 1v1 matchups, lol.

1.1.2 is shit going by the patch notes. I had yet to get reaper rushed since 1.1.1 came out, and with early Nitro Pack nullified I can't even see myself go reapers anymore. Moreover, the barracks now has a requirement? Ridiculous.

I guess it's time to start practicing Zerg builds.

A lot of the same big names who were at he last MLG, except that now Idra and White-Ra are there :)
Title: Re: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: boykun on October 16, 2010, 07:18:49 AM
Patch 1.1.2 sucks! lol. As a Terran player, I feel all the changes are way too much. I really disagree with the supply depot requirement for the barracks. That just takes away what a Terran should be. Supply depot requirement makes them like Protoss. This really changes early game Terran strategies.. not that I cheese or anything, but yeah, lol. Factory requirement for nitro packs is dumb. I'd rather see them increase reaper and/or nitro packs cost if they want to nerf reapers. Now by the time I can get reapers with nitro packs, my opponent would have teched to units that are more than enough to handle reapers.

Had no idea MLG was going on this weekend. Cool to see most of the names from the last MLG there. Surprised IdrA is playing in the MLG, considering he qualified for the GSL which starts in a few days. Speaking of GSL though, its been quite surprising for me. Many big names that qualified from the first season didn't even make it past the preliminaries. I was certain sSKS was gonna make it far again, but he was eliminated in probably the biggest upset in the prelims. Good to see most BW veterans making it through, tough surprising July didn't go through.
Once again I'll be rooting for everyone's favorite German, TLO
I'm predicting FruitDealer will take the whole thing again.

lol, play a couple placement 3v3 games with ayabie and words on NA server. it's pretty funny  one more game until we are on the ladder o/

We're 2-2 at the moment so we're most likely hitting either silver or gold league if we win the last one. I blame the maps for our two losses. :P

Played SC2 until 4am with Ayabie and Zig. Last time I played until that time was 5 years ago

We ended up in 3v3 Bronze league, had some alternating win/lose streaks. We got cannon rushed twice but we split it. But overall we had a winning record last night fufufu.

If you guys have time on Saturdays, we can play together. Usually we start around 11-11:30PM GMT+8. It's late night here in SEA and probably daytime for you guys in US and EU. :P

Played through the single player, and I love following SC2 as an eSport, but I'd be horrible if I ever played in multiplayer.

We played a couple games again yesterday. This one particular game is really funny. Check out the caps  Our base are at 6 while the opponents at 12. Basically our opponents went mass mutas+corruptors+thors while the protoss have a mix of collossus and gateway units. ayabie is the cyan terran, words is blue protoss and I'm red zerg. We don't expect to win when the thors and protoss ball roflstomp our bases.

ayabie's marines wiped by thors wall.

words' hero carrier and dts. That protoss ball can't survive without a detection  The carrier died though.

words' hero dts cleaning our opponent base. You can see it a bit hiding behind the cc.

Another thors wall wiped by our hydras+marines ball. words voids rays are having fun charging the zerg's base.

Been away from playing StarCraft II.. because of Black Ops >_> but started playing a lot again recently. Did some laddering 1v1 and got pretty good results. Played a ton of 4v4. Feels good to be on SC2 land again. :thumbup

Has anyone tried the Public Test Realm? There are some insane changes in the game.

hello fellow starcraft brethren, i'm new here and i hope i'll get to play with some of you guys :D
if anyone wants to play hit me up with your id.#, i'm an 1800 diamond toss if that means anything
albeit my absence from ladder and actual starcraft in general due to finals, i will be playing after saturday since that's my last one...

anyone watching the gsl finals tomorrow night? predicting mc will destroy rain just like how he manhandled jinro (maybe even moreso), although i would be pretty upset if he didn't. toss needs a hero to take the gsl!

Has anyone tried the Public Test Realm? There are some insane changes in the game.

although i have not played it myself, i read about it. some of the initial changes were pretty insane, ie. fungal growth not affecting air units. seems as though they regretted that and the phoenix build time reduced by 10 seconds + listening to the whining of the zergs all throughout the world reverted that change. however, one of the best changes is scv target priority being ramped up to the same priority as the structure/unit it's repairing. pfs will be easier to penetrate, bc/thor rushes also easier to nullify, woohoo!

anyway, the starcraft thread is not as big as it should be :( let's get more people playing!

Yeah I was watching from game 4 on since that's when I got home from work.  4-1 is about what I expected, if it wasn't going to be 4-0.  MC just seemed to go through the tournament without a care in the world.  Glad to see a protoss win though.

Also, today and tomorrow is the EG Masters Cup FInals.  It's gonna be casted by Day9 and DJWheat on G4TV.com, and it's gonna be epic.

Anyone been playing lately? I've recently started playing 1v1 again after quite a long absence and, well.. got stomped pretty hard . I must have lost maybe 5 or 6 games in a row.

Pretty crazy how strategy trends change from week to week. There were some pretty strong ones, particularly this Protoss I played twice in a row on the ladder. Must not have been many people playing at the time, but he did this crazy strong timing attack with immortals and steamrolled me even though I did a super early marauder push.
There were also some weird ones. I got speedling/baneling dropped . Probably like 10 overlords full .

Anyway it's just been announced that IdrA is withdrawing from GSL March to concentrate on North American tournaments. This is pretty surprising since he's been in Korea forever. Pretty weird decision in my opinion, there's probably something else behind it. Though he will most likely demolish every tournament he enters and get lots of money lol.

Anyone following the Team Liquid Star League?
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2011_Pokerstrategy.com_TSL3 (http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2011_Pokerstrategy.com_TSL3)

Almost done with the Ro32 but already some very surprising upsets. They invited 7 of the top Koreans and so far only 2 advanced. NaDa still has to play, or rather his games still have to be casted. I'm quite surprised the Koreans are having such a difficult time. Well, MC rolled through like it was nothing, but it seems like international players are crushing pretty hard. Don't know if its latency issues, or they're just not concentrated on the TSL3, but its kind of disappointing to see them performing so poorly. However at the same time, its good to see that international players are just on par with the Koreans and there's not much of a skill deficit like how it was portrayed.
Liquid guys are getting eliminated also, surprisingly enough its the guys who are staying/stayed in Korea that didn't make it through. NaDa plays TLO so that should be pretty damn exciting. Won't be any upsets there really since both players are very popular. I do want to see MC roll through this, I hope he beats White-Ra and Tyler beat his respective opponent cus that PvP should be some good shit.

I watched the Jiinro-Morrow and Huk-HasuObs matches last night. Really liked the 1st game between Huk and Hasu, showed how one skill (blink) can determine the outcome of the match. Also looking forward to the TLO-Nada match.
Title: Re: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: boykun on March 28, 2011, 12:09:46 AM
NaDa/TLO match pretty exciting as expected. I usually don't like watching or playing TvT, but it's recently gotten more interesting. It was good to see NaDa's super consistent, conventional Terran vs. TLO's very unorthodox, creative Terran play. Makes for an otherwise boring matchup very interesting. Sucks that this match wasn't farther in the tournament, but it was still satisfying to watch.

IdrA/CrunCher match lol. So much BM.

I hope the Koreans and LiquidTyler crush through Ro16. Need a better showing after their fellow players got decimated in Ro32.

Title: Re: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: Ayabie on March 28, 2011, 11:32:58 PM
The TSL of upsets so far, or rather curse of Korea with anyone living there getting knocked out. Mvp VS Adelscott had me doing the Mvp face :o after he got crushed. Also with Jinro going down against MorroW, I have a newfound Swedish T to give love to - ThorZaIN! Loved that set against FruitDealer.

Some controversial games here and there, but overall I'm enjoying the games I've seen so far. Ro16 is going to be badass.

By the way, did anyone catch the GSTL? DAT FINALS! IM is my favorite team, but SlayerS really deserved the win with that fuck solid roster. I'm thrilled to see that a lot of the new faces qualified for Code A next season.  :thumbup
Title: Re: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: boykun on March 30, 2011, 01:06:07 AM
SlayerS is pretty ballin' right now. So many good players who are better than BoxeR currently. The Emperor is probably mid tier in SlayerS, but to be fair he's probably been more concentrated in looking after his team, making sure they get to this point. Min's weird expand style is pretty awesome, spread out as much as you can! lol. Also, they got the coolest coach, Cella. Holy Check!

Been watching the GSL World All Stars vs. Korea All Stars. It's a damn good series. MC vs WhiteRa woooow so intense. And July, what a boss.
I feel like Jinro has been slipping a bit, after that game with July. I hope he does well next season.

So the new ladder season started.. sometime recently. I just went in to play earlier and my stats were reset.
Decided to switch to Random without no real knowledge of Protoss or Zerg XD Protoss a little better but my Zerg is just horrible. Its like I have no idea what I'm doing. Played some 5 games today, got Protoss once, Zerg the rest. Managed to win with Protoss by 4 gate, lost all Zerg  Somehow I think the randomizer is broken.

They started casting replays lol. Mad props to day9, wheat and jp though.
Anyone see that idra/huk match? Amazing and terrible at the same time. I cant believe idra lost to a bunch of hallucinations.

I cant believe idra lost to a bunch of hallucinations.

I was reading TL's live report on twitter of the matches and just had to palm face after this:

"Getting more info about idra huk G2, 5 voids and a colo in Huks army were hallus and idra GGd immediately"

He seems to have grown a bad habit of GGing way too early. Bunkers and hallucinations are his kryptonite.
Title: Re: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: LaJon on April 03, 2011, 04:49:16 PM
Yeah, I wasn't at all ready for how bad this MLG was run.  Got the HQ pass, did what I could to be around for streaming, but it was no good.  Either the stream was down completely, or the stream was lagging badly, or the HQ stream was down, or the HQ stream was up and it was freezing constantly.  And even on top of all that, the stream was pretty bad quality in-game.  They've said that you can either get a refund or a free HQ pass for the next event, so I'll probably just hold out hope that next time they'll be prepared.

Oh, and the HuK vs Idra game was legendary.  Talk about playing on your opponent's weakness of raging out of games.

A guy who was watching managed to capture the stream for that game here:

Go to about 9:30 into it for the glorious win.

Oh fuck, my body was completely ready for a Mvp VS MC finals and then MarineKing pulls out a reverse win out of nowhere. Pretty icky about the TvT match-up, but it hasn't been all tank/marine lately so hopefully we'll get to see at least one interesting game. Another Mvp VS Ryung-like game would rock my world.

The finals should be interesting. Hopefully Marineking won't get stomped again. I'm pretty sure we're gonna see some BCs flying around. I've been trying them out in the ladder, they move so fast now.

Fuck, I can't wait to see Mvp crush his way up to Code S again, albeit he is up against a P in his first match up, his TvP shouldn't be as terrible as last season.

Anyway, yesterday's Dreamhack Stockholm Invitational has to be the best produced SC2 event thus far. Fuck awesome host, good commentators, a lot of top players, IdrA 6pooling, probe plushies and Swedish water. Not a complete 10, but I felt there was constant action going on, so a big thumbs up to the Dreamhack staff. I've got to get my ass to one of these events one day.
Title: Re: The StarCraft Thread
Post by: boykun on April 14, 2011, 06:47:35 AM
I only managed to catch the last 3 matches of DreamHack but it was really really nicely produced. Had awesome vs screens and everything  Much better production than... NASL >_>
So many matches to try to keep up with now. So many damn tournaments going on. Most definitely still gonna prioritize GSL though.

Playing random for the new season.. its pretty fun, lol. Why don't we try and share build orders/strategies? I started doing one for PvZ that's worked out well so far. Basically I do a fast expand build and turtle, then make Phoenix, Void Ray, and Colossus with some Zealots, which make up one of the strongest unit compositions in the game.

As Protoss.. go for a Forge fast expand (build Pylon and Forge at the bottom of ramp/choke). With the scouting Probe, block the Zerg's natural with a Pylon and build a Canon there when the Forge finishes. This should delay the Zerg's expansion for quite a bit. Back at home, warp in a Canon and Gateway with a Nexus following. Nexus can come before Gateway, whichever makes you feel jelly. So, get your gas, make Probes and Pylons.

Scouting again is of course important, as Zerg will have a few choices to try and catch up. They can do a Baneling bust, a Roach bust, fast tech to mutas and whatever else. I mostly get Roach bust. It's important to send out Probes to see what the Zerg will do. Bottom line is, whatever you scout, make a ton of Canons  When there is enough gas, warp in Stargates, maybe two or three. With the Stargates I usually get out 4 Phoenix and send them in to harass.. mostly snipe Queens or Overlord hunting.

Usually around this time the Zerg attack will come. If it was Roaches that I scouted, I chronoboost Void Rays to help hold the attack. If I scouted a Baneling bust, even more Canons, lol, and try to layer with more Gateways. The extra buildings can be cancelled once the attack is held off. By now I would be banking a lot of minerals so I warp in a Robotics Facility and get a third base. The third base is important because the unit composition requires a lot of gas, so even if its only mining gas, you're fine.
After the Robotics finishes get a Support Bay for Colossus and Twilight Council. As you will be getting a lot of minerals, drop down like, 6 Gateways. Research Thermal Lance, Zealot legs, and Warpgate. Warpgate could be researched earlier if resources allow.

Then I like to continue harassing with Phoenix, just to kill Overlords; or get a Warp Prism and do Zealot drops to try and deny the third or fourth base of the Zerg. With the whole time continuing to produce Phoenix, Void Ray and Colossus, you should now have.. the Protoss deathball! This is around 150 to max food. Warp in Zealots to tank damage then 1a to the Zerg base and win. You can be cheeky and get a Mothership too.

It is very difficult for Zerg to bust if you turtle with a lot of Canons. Plus, with the Phoenix harass they will be forced to stick around near their base, or get a lot of Spore Crawlers.. and then for them its less Drones that they'll have to remake which uses more larva for their attacking units.

Advantages: When Protoss maxes their army they're pretty much unstoppable. Zergs would need to send in their own max army, get wiped, buy time to re-max their army, and then engage again. With this unit composition you can pretty much walk over the Zerg army straight to their base. Also there are a lot of minerals towards the mid game for a lot of Canons to secure a third, or probably double expand.

Disadvantages: It's a fast expand build so pretty much a cheese will kill it probably. But nothing like scouting can't prevent! If you scout a 6pool or something just cancel and make a tight wall, lol.

I don't have the build timing down to a tee or anything. I'm no diamond player, lol. But that's the general strategy of it.. basically,

tl;dr Make Phoenixes, Void Rays and Colossi, kill Zerg.

It's worked out for me pretty well. I haven't lost a PvZ with it yet.

edit: I uploaded some replays
http://www.mediafire.com/?bht9m4b91o3rryl (http://www.mediafire.com/?bht9m4b91o3rryl)  Tal'Darim Altar. The first time I tried this strat actually. No Zealots involved, but the dude RAGED pretty hard.

Did anyone watch the AHGL (http://afterhoursgaming.tv/ (http://afterhoursgaming.tv/))? The play wasn't fantastic, but it was still fun to see the companies duke it out - plus anything with day[9] commentary just seems that much more awesome.

Yeah, Microsoft pretty much dominated. I was rooting for Zynga - they were such underdogs after upsetting Google.

And GSL finals later on tonight!

Heart of the Swarm looks like it's going to be a whole new game with those changes.
Someone brought up that more casters = higher skill cap, so will the pro scene will migrate over?

Looks like current Brood War pros and teams are going to make the switch to SC2 in a few weeks (BW/SC2 proleague this month, full SC2 proleague in October). I want to see if Flash will still be as dominating as he is in BW.
