Title: Coach, 40, Weds 16-Year-Old Student
Post by: JFC on June 23, 2007, 06:01:57 PM
As a teacher myself I find this rather disturbing.  I mean like what, they couldn't wait a couple of years so the age thing wouldn't be so much of a legal issue? If what they feel for each other is real, they should realize that waiting would be the smart move to make. She's just a kid, so it's somewhat understandable that she's likely not thinking straight, but HE should definitely have known better.

The Hagers are trying to figure out how life went off track for their teenage daughter, Windy.

They envisioned that life for the good student and promising athlete would be filled with dreams of the prom and college, but that all changed this week when Windy, 16, married her high school track coach.  (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3305652&page=1)

I think this is just a case parents whining about how their daughter didn't become what they have always dreamed. And if they don't want her to marry him, maybe the parents should not sign the consent forms allowing her to do so! They say that not signing those forms would have "killed us all". Well I don't know if that would have been any worse than making their daughter a top-story of media.

I just have to blame the parents, because signing those consent forms was so stupid thing to do. Of course it's disturbing that a 40-year-old coach is marrying a child, but afterall he's marrying her... Isn't that at least some kind of sign of "true love". Well he had to do it anyway because I guess they could have put him in jail if he had had relationship with her without a marriage. But again, why the hell the parents signed the consent forms?!!

Not necessarily. according to this page http://www.coolnurse.com/consent.htm  if she was 16, that's the age of consent in North Carolina. So all that could have happened is her parents could have got a restraining order, but he would not have been arrested. It is not statutory rape, it is rape only if the girl says so. And from the article it seems obvious she was not going to say she did not consent. Didn't Jerry Lee Lewis marry his 13 years old cousin?

I don't know about the USA laws, but in Finland coach's position as her teacher would probably make it a sexual abuse of an underaged person, eventhough she was already 16, what is the age of consent.

Laws differ depending on where you live in the US, so it's a complicated issue lol

but HE should definitely have known better.

Mid life crisis? haha

I think a 16 years old girl is quite mature to make some decisions. My mom married at 16 with a man that was 32, and she was 17 when she had me, so I don't see anything intrinsically wrong here. It would be different if we talk about a 13 years old like on the Jerry Lee Lewis example I posted. But we all know girls mature a lot faster than boys. So what I'm saying is, I would not recommend to do it, but don't automatically think of the kid as "innocent and naive" and the adult as a monster. Yes, it would have been better to get somebody her own age, but hey, it's their choice.

That picture of them, the one being attached to almost every story about them, is just brutal.

They look like father and daughter...

They look alike that is why affection starts.

If they stay in love until death do us apart, this is a great love story.  If they break up in 5 or 6 years, it is a tragedy.

Well, love is blind. We should respect their decision for doing so.

It's not just the age difference, but his as a coach he had a certain authority and that's the reason why teachers and coaches should be a bit more careful before marrying their students.

"She could have done anything," Betty said. "She could have set the world on fire. She threw it all away."

Why are they talking about her like she's dead??

Marriage prevents you from having an education, a career etc.??
