Someone please tell me that films like Battle Royale, Kiki's Delivery Service and Seven Samurai aren't Hollywood remakes. Why can't they just let things be?! I just know we're going to see a DeathNote one too. And they just can't let franchises die out can they? Wolverine? The Grudge 3? Terminator 4? Jurassic Park 4?! It's all just overkill.

I could tell you they aren't Hollywood remakes..... but then I'd be lying.

However they remake Kiki (live-action or animated) it's going to be pointless.

Terminator 4 will have no Arnie.... so will also be pointless.

The last I heard of Seven Samurai was that it would be the same film (plot, location, etc.) but with a Western cast (including Clooney).... which makes absolutely no sense. Oh and Zhang Ziyi thrown in for absolute nonsense sake.

At least the Oldboy remake has been given up on for the time being.

LMAO. I like George Clooney, both as an actor and as a person, but in Seven Samurai?! That's almost as bad as Tom Cruise being the Last Samurai. And Zhang Ziyi thrown in lol. People are going to think she's actually Japanese instead of Chinese (as if people watching these movies would care)

You're right Kiki's Delivery Service remake is utterly pointless. The original's great, so why tamper with it? And thank God the Oldboy remake is put off. But oh dear, so many pointless sequels/prequels and remakes of classic movies. I'm dreading MGS the most.

Some of the movies listed I've known about, but the majority of the list is new to me.
Not really surprising, though, it follows Hollywoods usual movie making trend.

Sequels galore, remake classic TV series into movies, video games to movies, remake foreign films, anime to live action movies, remake older/classic movies, etc.

Yadda, yadda, blah, blah.

The 39 Steps <--no clue what that is, sounds interesting, has something to do with religion or enlightenment?
Ikiru is a US remake, which suprises me even more than the Seven Samurai that people would attempt it.  And The 39 Steps is a Hitchcock spy thriller movie from the 30s, so I'd assume that's a remake too.

I compiled my list from IMDB.

Yes, Warcraft is a film based on the game.

Ikiru is indeed a US remake of the classic Kurosawa film. I'm sure they'll just keep gnawing away at anything they can remake. Just imagine what it'll be like in 50 years :D Spielberg remakes! Haha!

RionZ, a few comments on your comments :)
Fanboys - a film about some Star Wars geeks, some of the Star Wars cast are acting in the film.
The Host - I believe this is a US remake of the Korean big budget monster movie.
Jurassic Park IV - Sam Neill isn't signed onto this project, one can only hope. Looks like it will just be another JP3.
Kung Pow 2 - This film keeps getting put back so it probably won't be out next year.
The Mummy 3 - Weisz won't be in it but they're having someone else play her character... go figure!
Star Trek XI - It's taking place during or before the original series. Yes that means somebody else will be playing Kirk...
Terminator 4 - I agree.
Untitled Evangelion Project - I read that this is going to be a live action US remake.
1984 - There was already a film version made of this.

HELLZ YEAH! 'Cause that's the only one that matters :) I'm excited about other ones as well, but she's the Asian star I have been WAITING for to come out here (well if BoA's still coming, then her and BoA).

JUN JI HYUN!

I know.... that really made me mad. But Koreans do that for marketing reasons. They think that if they change their name to one that has an easier pronunciation, then people will remember them and they will have a bigger name in the business.
So okay, fine, I understand that part (but still, I like to think that Jun Ji "Sexy" Hyun has a better ring to it ¬___¬) but at least they should have kept it the traditional two-syllable name. I think Gina/Jinna would have sounded better, maybe even Jenna!

Her English is pretty good. I remember when she was interviewed for Elle magazine (since she's the first Asian model to be on the cover ever) that she was able to understand the photographer without a translator and she would answer back too.

A Hollywood live action version of one of anime's iconic series? Why would they ruin the series like that? Hollywood doesn't know what DBZ was all about. And some animes just don't translate well to live action. Two of the few that did were both japanese live action versions, "Shinobi" (a live action Basilisk) and "Saikano".

If true, I can't wait to see a number of things and how they translate to the silver screen. For example, will Piccolo be CGI or make up? Also what saga will they take? I presume they'd have to go with the Saiyan saga. And finally will it be the 2hrs of screaming 'I'M POWERING UP!!!!' as I presume it to be? And also, who will be the cast? I remember reading ages and ages ago of a DBZ movie and that Jackie Chan would play Vegeta

*EDIT*

Quote
AICN has got word of the latest updates on the American remake of the Korean classic, "Oldboy". Apparently a scooper on the site got to have a few questions with Fabian Marquez, who is writing the remake.

Marquez revealed that he plans to keep the famous one take fight scene in the movie, and that the plot and overall philosophy would not differ from the original. He also stated that he would be handing in a rough draft of the script to Universal in Early May, so it wil still be a while until production starts. The writer also reassured fans that even the most controversial elements of the original, that dealt with areas such as incest, will still be retained in the remake.

In terms of potential leads for the movie, Russell Crowe was named as a possibility for the lead character of Oh Dae Su, while John Cusack was mentioned as a good possibility for the role of Oh Dae Su's nemesis, Lee Woo Jin.

Why even bother with a remake then? I don't even think the original is that culture-specific that it needs to be translated for a Western audience. And if anyone's gonna play Lee Woo Jin, it's Christian Bale surely?

James Wong, formerly of The X-Files and the man behind Final Destination and The One, is writing and directing the live action version of Dragon Ball, which is going to go into production in Canada this November. (http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=news&id=12002)

Looks like it will be following the Piccolo saga from Dragonball, something which I haven't seen so can't really comment on all that much. The link above also shows casting info, and looks like Goku, Bulma, Yamcha, Piccolo and Master Roshi will be the lead characters.

I guess they're starting off with the last arc of Dragon Ball so if there's success they can start right away into DBZ. I cringed after reading some of those character descriptions like 18 yr old Goku uncool and unpopular at school... :grr: and I'm pretty sure he was younger then 18 at that point in the series, but maybe they made him older since he'll probably be getting married in this movie.

I'm quite interested on how Hollywood's version is going to turn out... but after reading those character descriptions, I'm getting this dreadful feeling that the movie is going to try to be "hip and cool" and turn out to be something quite absurd like Volcano High. >___>

***

After slipping on a mask for Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire might be slipping into a giant robot for "Robotech." (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i1f2de64a1d24bd55d67832dedc4bd442)

*sigh* can't we just leave these classic series be? ugh... I blame Carl Macek.. burn in hell!!

^ And apparently toned down from a promising rated R, to a PG-13

In other news:

Some news on the Tekken and Onimusha series (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=38940)

About Tekken:

Quote
"After the Great Terror Wars, governments fell...
Seven corporations rose from the ashes to rule all men...
Together they were known as The Iron Fist...
The mightiest of which was...TEKKEN

The story centers on two childhood friends who enter a worldwide martial arts tournament. As they progress, the pals move toward uncovering a secret that lies within the mysterious Tekken Corp. Charles Stone will direct.

Oh good, another movie adaptation that ignores the source material, tries to come up with it's own thing and ultimately, turns out crap (and it's based on a fighting game too, which isn't the greatest in story material). Tekken corp? That doesn't make sense! And this is one of those rare occassions that you can tell, even from the poster, that it's destined for an epic fail. A giant T? What's up with that?

About Onimusha, only news is that it will start filming next year, with Christophe Gans (Silent Hill) at the helm. It'll only work with Takeshi Kaneshiro playing Samanosuke, like he did for the game.

Twentieth Century Fox has approached Mark Wahlberg to star in its Max Payne film, according to a report.

He looks set to play the role of the tough cop whose wife and child are brutally murdered by drug addicts, prompting him to go on a hell-bent rampage eventually uncovering the evil mastermind behind it all. (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=87292)

Seems like a logical choice to me. Whether or not he'll do it is another matter.

Oh no!! More DBZ movie news and it starts off promising, then just goes horribly wrong. Good news first:

Stephen Chow (Shaolin Socccer, Kung Fu Hustle) is taking the role of producer) (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/a79826/chow-to-produce-dragonball-movie.html)

Bad news? Justin Chatwin (??) is to play as Goku, while James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is to play as Piccolo. Don't know if the Namek's CGI or costume (please God no). So just to clarify this (http://imdb.com/gallery/hh/0154226/HH/0154226/Justin2.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Chatwin,%20Justin%20(I)) is your Goku, and this (http://imdb.com/gallery/granitz/1058/Events/1058/wi20010106_JamesMarsters_Vespa_133980.jpg.html?path=pgallery&path_key=Marsters,%20James) is your Piccolo.
