Title: McDonald's sued in China for not using Chinese
Post by: Foxy Brown on July 30, 2007, 02:38:09 PM
A Chinese lawyer has sued McDonald's in China for using mostly English, not Chinese, on its receipts, violating his right to information, media reported on Friday. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/27/AR2007072700777.html)

Then I want Americans coming to my country to learn spanish, how about that?

Your rationale is stupid. If the restaurant is in China, they should use chinese. Try a little respect for other cultures.

Here we have french restaurants that have the menu in french, and then a spanish translation, is that too much to ask from McDonalds? By the way, McDonalds here has ALL their receipts in spanish.

Calling somebody stupid for wanting a business operating in HIS country to have receipts in HIS language is really arrogant, you know?

Indeed. If I went to McDonald's HERE and my receipt was in Chinese... I'd have to ask some questions. That's a problem in America though, we have so much "pride" which most of the time turns into arrogance/ignorance. You can still take pride in your country without being arrogant about it and respecting other cultures. I'm not so sure about suing the company though, unless there was really no other way to get it changed. Sometimes legal action ISN'T the only way (though the guy IS a lawyer).

ummm ..... I think it's stupid because English is one of the most important language in the world .... and I wouldn't mind learn a foreign language (I think I learned TOO MUCH foreign languages)

also I'm Chinese (not 100%, but I still can read and write fluently) and I still think it's stupid ....  ok, may "stupid" is a little bit harsh ... but still ....

I don't see why McDonald HAS to use 100% Chinese .... just like if I went to some french or south american restaurant, I expect to see french or spanish menus ..... I'll just ask the waiter "is 'pollo' chicken ? yes ? ok, I want that XD"

Then I would have to tell you "Hey, stupid, learn spanish". See? He wants a restaurant IN HIS COUNTRY to have receipts IN HIS LANGUAGE. That does not make him stupid. He's not talking about menus, he's talking about the receipts. What would you do if you go to a mexican restaurant in YOUR country, and the RECEIPT is given to you in spanish? Would you know if they are charging you exactly what you had?

ok ^_^ .... actually I've learned Spanish for many years but still suck at it ...... I'm too dumb .... XD

EDIT:

1.) I'll try to learn what the heck those words means ...

2.) I should know what I've ordered and how much they cost .... if not, why the hell I ordered that ....

3.) I should know what fees they're charging and able to figure it out ... for example, the tax in NY is around 8.9%, the service charge around 15 - 20% .... it's easy to calculate the estimate ....

4.) if that restaurant is ripping me off, I'll sue their sorry ass ^_^

Maybe you should cut down on how many languages you are trying to learn, and get your English countables / uncountables (http://perso.wanadoo.es/autoenglish/count.htm) and singular / plurals (http://perso.wanadoo.es/autoenglish/gr.plural.i.htm) right..  :P

:kinda on topic:
Went to KFC here (Japan) a few years ago, where the menus are all in Japanese (mostly Katakana).. I wanted a "6 piece pack", so said "six piece" and the girl yells "roku piece" to the cook.. Had lunch at KFC last week and went to order a "2 piece pack" so said "ni piece" and the girl yells out "two piece"..  :banghead:

hahaha, that's why I said "too much" ..... I've learned English and other languages @ the same time since I was a kid .... so my English is pretty screwed up ........ sorry >_<""

anyway .....

It also happened to me once .... but that's because that word is too long, so they use English ........

So is McDs having a tough time compensating the guy his 13 cents?

If the law in New York says that all fiscal documents (and a receipt is a fiscal document) have to comply to a certain standard, and you won't make a fool of yourself, then go ahead. Law in my country says that all fiscal documents have to adhere to certain characteristics, one of them being they have to be written in the language of the country.

Another celebrity-seeking lawyer.  Like this is the greatest China's problems. If people don't like McD, they can vote with their wallet.  The Chinese mostly just couldn't care less.

I bet this is the reaction to paper steam bun.

I think suing is going a little to far but I agree with everyone, I would want to everything that is in my food. In China Town, my friend went to McDonalds to get chicken nuggets but she had a hard time because 1) the menu was in Chinese and 2)her ticket (can't spell) was in Chinese.

I support the lawsuit.  It's not someone being selfish, there's a good reason, and it'll only benefit people in the future.  Sue MacDo's asses off, I say.

Ohh...if only we have that kind of law I'll be okay. Everything here is in English. I mean, i know English, almost everyone her knows English but there's no need to have EVERYTHING in English. It annoys me because is not the US, is Mexico!!!

Bitches.

Anyway, good choice. I agree with Ri~
