Title: The new iMac
Post by: Mayo on August 08, 2007, 01:54:24 PM
Any other mac users getting awwgasms over the new iMac (http://www.apple.com/imac/) design like I am?

Really, I just love the fact that everything that the mac mini has to deal with (i.e. having to have its separate monitor/set of speakers) is all inside one to where you just worry about getting some speakers.

And the keyboard!!! Oh my God...

*goes off to fangirl some more*

I think it's a pretty sweet redesign, nice and sleek. Specwise and sizewise they definitely did good, the new keyboard is kool also, although the squareness of it I find a little odd but hey it might actually be better to type with. I read someone else's first thoughts of it online and the one thing they didn't like it how they didn't manage to get rid of the 'Jay Leno' chin from the old imac's to the new ones' which I agree on.

Not really.

It's pretty nice looking, but it's pretty much just the macbook pro design(minus the illuminated keyboard) made into a desktop using their smaller cinema displays. But I like the white of the older models more than the silver. Having a white or black option like the MacBooks would've been really nice. I also don't like the black bars around the monitor.

If you're not really into hardware expansion and don't mind using mac software, it's pretty much the perfect desktop computer. It's also pretty much clutter free, though I think they could've made it wireless out of the box instead of having a wired keyboard and mouse.

Another thing is that they released it a couple months before the new OSX is released. I know they probably wanted to release it during "back to school" but if you want the computer now, you'd have to buy Leopard separate.

I love IMacs, but I sadly do not own one. But I've used them a lot and all, so yeah

and yes, that keyboard, I wanna touch that think so bad, lol.

Okay, before I get into my mini-rant, can I just say that your, JFC, reply was really uncalled for. I was asking mac users. And I kinda doubt you'd be one (you come off as a PC user to me, but tell me if you are a mac user and I'll take that back)
You got offended just because I said I wasn't fangasming over the new iMac design? Or were you offended because I put the little " " smiley at the end of my two-word post (a two-word post in which I never badmouthed/bashed/insulted/made fun of it)?  No offense, but your rant came off sounding rather defensive and dare I say, you're blowing my two-word post way out of proportion.  Also, just because you made a post about Macs, doesn't mean that PC users won't comment on it.

I admit that I'm a PC user, but I have many friends who are lifelong Mac users. And to be honest, like me, none of them are going bonkers over the new design either. I've also personally used Macs myself off and on for various projects, and while I've never hidden the fact that certain things about Macs irritate me and that I prefer/am more comfortable with PCs, that doesn't mean I'm a "Mac basher". But, if you want me to explain why I'm not going ga-ga over the new design, then ok.

The main part of the computer just seems like a slightly updated version of a G5 unit (which I gotta say, is one sweet setup); it's nice, but nothing really new. As for the keyboard, while the metallic finish is nice and the thinness of it is pretty slick, that's all just cosmetics. I've always looked more towards physical comfort and practicality/ease of use of hardware over how it looks.  I've personally never been a fan of the super square keyboard setup, just because I find it extremely uncomfortable to use them when I'm typing for extended periods of time. Before I got my Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard (http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/336/keyboardzj7.jpg), my wrists ached a lot from having to use the standard square-shaped keyboard that comes default with most computers. Now that I have it, I've never had to worry about wrist pain.

It's obvious that you really like the design TR, but you shouldn't go blowing your stack like that if people happen to disagree with you. Everyone IS entitled to their own opinion on the design, after all.

I loved it ! I've always loved MACs but unfortunatly I've never had one ...
I loved the monitor, it's so stylish. Not to mention that things look so clean when you don't need a huge box with all your PC components inside.
But unfortunatly this is not for me, where I live they are a bit overpriced, so I'm staying with my PC ... But regardless of it, if I had some spare money, I'd buy it in a blink of an eye !

 I hate how the second I get a new mac, a sleeker one comes out. I'm still happy with all of my macs, though  :yep:

I have to say I agree with JFC up there.

I've been using Macs since the days when you needed a paper clip ready in one hand while using it (don't ask me if you don't know what that means!  :D)

But I find myself using PCs more because of 1 word: GAMES

In terms of design, sure Apple's the king of pure minimalist design but I have to say the latest iteration looks like a gradual evolutionary step rather than the radical jump, say, when iMac itself was introduced. So yeah...nothing special indeed.

well that's what it is, the new iMac, and that's what they're selling it as. There really isn't much massive design change you can do to a flat board. :P

Actually though, the specs of the new iMacs would make it a pretty decent gaming rig if it were to be running windows, though you probably won't be able to play some of the newer games at higher settings.

of course the mouse and keyboard probably wouldn't be ideal for gaming either

I fell in love with the iMac/iBook keyboard about 10 seconds after my fingers first touched it.  Now if Apple would put a ThinkPad-style TrackPoint on their keyboards!  I've been using ThinkPads for the past 10 years, and I have gotten used to being able to moving the mouse without taking my hands off the home row.

I was playing around with the viewing distance calculator at http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html

It seems that putting a 24" iMac on a coffee table (about 3 feet away, if you're sitting on a sofa) will give the same viewing angle as putting a 52" flat screen TV 8 feet away.  So if you're in a darkened room sitting on a sofa, a 24" iMac on the coffee table would be indistinguishable from a wall-mounted 52" LCD TV of equivalent quality.  Of course, the 52" 1080p LCD would cost at least $2,500, while a 24" iMac will cost at least $1,800.

I'm seriously thinking of nixing my planned purchase of a new large screen TV and just putting an iMac on the coffee table, with a wireless keyboard.

I can't understand why they decided to make screen with a gloss surface...Gloss surface sucks big time if you have direct sun light or other light on the screen. It just looks cool but that's it.

Macs are sexy as hell, use-wise and appearance-wise.

But I'll always still prefer a good ol' PC  :yep:

They are following some of the other manufacturers (SONY/HP) which have also those kind of screens, they can display video much better (contrast/colors).

I wouldn't say that the gloss surface has that much effect on the image quality. The tft-panel has a the largest impact in the overall image quality and if the panel is some shitty TN-panel, even the glossy surface can't save it.

from using macbooks with the glossy screens, I never really had a problem with it. And the colors do look a lot better on it than on most non glossy screens I've used.
