Can the H!P'sters suggest a cheap (<$100) inkjet printer for student usage? I'm getting it for my little sister who will be using it for high-school school assignments and reports.
Cheap ink is a plus, high quality color photo printing isn't. Most printers I see these days are either multi-function scan/fax/phone/copy units or photo-printers, and she doesn't really need either. This would replace a HP Deskjet 3420, a truly horrible piece of crap that broke down after a week.

Canon's have cheapest ink cartridges.
Otherwise if possible can I pursuade you to get a cheap B/W laserjet. Seeing as colour isn't really needed I think laserjets are way better value for money in long run plus they're faster at printing lots of pages. Good for large assignments etc.

Thanks for the tip. I think the longest assignment my sister has ever done was like a dozen pages, and she doesn't do those very often. I'm not sure a laser would make sense, but will check those options as well.

Anything but a Lexmark. Every single one is a POS.

^ Heh, with my recent ink cartridge issues, I'm learning that the hard way. :P

Remember laser printers use a lot of power, and they emit a lot of ozon (do not use it in a badly ventilated room) and these days they discovered also that the tonor is such a fine dust that its not advisable to be in the same room as the printer.
I am using a HP 5550 for years now, no problems with it.

Just make sure you get one with cheap third-party ink.

I ended up getting my sister the Canon Pixma IP4300 Inkjet Printer, new in box for $75 plus $19 in shipping. It works well enough, although the printer costs just a bit more than buying a new set of inks. Thanks for the recommendations!
