Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced Wednesday he will resign, ending a year-old government that has suffered a string of damaging scandals and a humiliating electoral defeat.
Abe, whose support rating has fallen to 30 percent, cited the ruling party's defeat in July 29 elections for the upper house of parliament, and said he had instructed party leaders to immediately search for a new premier. (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hU57Lk3-QT3i8_5EhCF7jpexe_rA)

Guess thats the way it goes in politics, cut your losses and GTFO.
Better to own up, though, IMHO.
-
Was Abe specifically chosen by Koizumi to be his successor, or was he chosen by the party?
Shame that all these political scandals screwed things up for him. He seemed to be making progress and seemed to be pretty well-respected by other nations.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe Hospitalized
By JOSEPH COLEMAN – 1 hour ago
TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was hospitalized Thursday for stress and exhaustion a day after announcing his resignation, his doctors said, amid speculation health troubles prompted him to step down.
Toshifumi Hibi, a doctor at Keio University Hospital, said Abe would stay at least three or four days for treatment of abdominal pains, exhaustion and other symptoms of "psychological stress."
Abe, 52, announced Wednesday he would quit, citing political reasons. Other government officials, however, including Chief Cabinet Secretary Kaoru Yosano, said Abe suffered from unspecified health issues that contributed to his departure.

Various articles I've read say that Taro Aso is most likely to become the new PM. He used to be the foreign minister and he's well known for being a huge manga otaku. They are still looking for a new PM though, it hasn't been officially announced yet.
-
damn right about all those scandals. I even thought this was about in new scandal when I read this on my news channel this morning.
-
Too bad for Abe, he always seemed to be such a nice person.
But they'll need someone with charisma! Hair like Koizumi or a guy in a mobile suit.

Blah, blah, blah...a bunch of rhetorical nonsense that hasn't been said before in other languages and other countries.
He voices his displeasure with government, well who hasn't regardless of where a person lives.
Just gotta understand, every form of government is flawed, because humans are flawed, thats the way it goes.
Yadda, yadda, and the horse ya rode in on, chuckles.

Quite fast.........Then who will replace him?

Parliament elected Yasuo Fukuda to be Japan's prime minister Tuesday, thrusting the moderate political insider into the job of taking on a resurgent opposition and rebuilding the scandal-scarred ruling party.
Fukuda immediately named a Cabinet that overlapped considerably with the lineup of his predecessor, Shinzo Abe, in an apparent bid to limit disruption following Abe's shock resignation earlier this month. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070925/ap_on_re_as/japan_politics)
I did a double take when I saw " By MARI YAMAGUCHI, Associated Press Writer."

Well, thats an interesting development, let's see how it plays out with Fukuda as the new PM.
