As Japan greys, who will look after the elderly? Maybe one day their aging children -- in robot suits -- if technology under development comes out of the laboratory and into the home.
Among the array of futuristic products for the senior citizens or their caregivers on display at a trade fair this week in Tokyo was a power assist suit that makes it easier to lift an elderly person out of a wheelchair or bed. Yea, they still have a long way to go to streamline those power assist suits, but its definitely a good concept.
forbids immigration
This little part of the article had me wondering.
With many non-Japanese already living in Japan, how is it that Japan forbids immigration?

you can live in Japan, but cannot become a citizen .... very DAMN hard to become a citizen if you are not Japanese ......
anyway, I need that suit ..... it can help me clean up my room XD

It's possible to become a Japanese citizen, just very difficult. Arudo Debito became a Japanese citizen.

Most foreigners don't want to become a Japanese citizen, since Japan doesn't allow/recognize dual citizenship.. So for myself, if I want to become a Japanese citizen, I need to give up my Australian citizenship, and there's NO WAY IN HELL am I doing that!!
The answer: Permanent Residency.. To be eligible, you need to be granted two consecutive 3year visas.. (which I have been :D )

My Japanese teacher needs to give up her Japanese citizenship to become a British citizen. It's madness :(

power suits... awesome. Just what I'd expect from Japan. Now all we need are some invading aliens or monsters to put these suits to good use!!

Yeah. There's also some Finnish guy who became a citizen, and he's in the Diet. And didn't Ruru (formerly of T&C Bomber) become a citizen, hence her surname Honda?
So it is, in fact, possible to become a Japanese citizen, however it is kind of doinky because you can't have dual citizenship. I think that if they did allow dual citizenship, there would probably be more gaijin becoming citizens.
Also, there are immigrants - mostly other Asians, particularly Chinese, but also some people from Brazil and some other Latin American countries. There are several smaller towns with large Brazilian communities. Though there are not as many immigrants as in Western countries, immigration isn't forbidden.
