Title: [Movie] 'Dragonball' comes to bigscreen
Post by: chokkan 2 on November 15, 2007, 03:32:59 AM
Twentieth Century Fox is bringing the Japanese manga phenomenon "Dragonball" to the bigscreen.

Justin Chatwin will star as Goku, a powerful warrior who protects the Earth from an endless stream of rogues bent on dominating the universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name. James Marsters is onboard as the film's villain Piccolo.

Actor-director-writer Stephen Chow ("Kung Fu Hustle") is producing. "Final Destination" helmer James Wong will direct from a script he penned. Ben Ramsey wrote an earlier draft. (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117975946.html?categoryid=13&cs=1)

James Marsters as Piccolo ?!   Nice ~ he really fit the image XD (he looks like Piccolo)

in case no one knows who is Stephen Chow : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Chow

btw, here is the link to the HK newspaper with the photo of the actress may star as Chi Chi, Goku's Girlfriend/Wife (http://hk.news.yahoo.com/071114/60/2jhwh.html).

I'm kinda excited about this, since I like dragonball a lot (it's one of the first manga that made me like anime and manga).

but at the same time I'm quite pessimistic.. dragonball live action?? hmm... I can't picture it..

Oh well, hopefully it's good, because there has been some attempt at a dragonball live action movie years ago (it's a chinese movie) and.. well... it sucked (IMO, at least).

Wow, I've seriously been reading about about a DB movie for yearsss now, and now they are finally getting the show on the road?  I'm not even interested in DB like I used to be. Maybe when I see a trailer or something, I might decide to see the movie
Title: Re: 'Dragonball' comes to bigscreen

i heard about the rumors of a Dragonball/DBZ movie ever since 2000. now it's 2007, and i don't really have much thought about it until i see a trailer or something.  i would like to see how it turn out since i'm a big fan of DB/DBZ/DBGT, although i haven't watch it since a couple years ago.  maybe if i watch it over again, it'll bring back my huge interest.  although i wonder if it'll be as great as the anime, hope they don't ruin it....

btw, i watched Stephen Chow's movie ever since a kid and loved his comedy style and blend of martial arts.  although this time he's a director and not an actor... still expecting something good from it.

that's 2 reason i should watch the film.

as of rite now, since watching the newer shonen anime/manga, and the fact that most anime/manga been turning into movies. i'm imagining what'll like if someone makes a live-action movie of Naruto or Bleach, Gundam (to rivals Transformers, maybe), Hellsing among others  animes that i'm watching recently.

when i watch anime or read manga, i imagine about related stuff. and basically think of how great it'll be if this or that happens, most of the a live-action movie.
but this is maybe not for this thread...

btw, this is kind of like 3 other movies based on anime/manga that i think of:

Blood: the last vampire
Kung Fu Dunk ( loosely based of Slam dunk)
Speed Racer

and now Dragonball

i know japanese/taiwanese has been making movies and dramas based on manga for some time now, but mostly on love stories and comedies, not with these shonen, action-filled, superpowers one, rite? or maybe i'm not so well informed...

again, sorry if this isn't the place to dicuss this, if only there's a thread for this... it's just that sometimes i have alot of creative ideas that i just want to let out....

i'll stop here.

All's I know is, if Trunks is coming, he better be hot and can handle a sword.
It'd be cool if they don't screw up another Asian creation so they can actually continue it. May be even all the way up till Pan comes.

If Jun Ji Hyun doesn't rock in Blood: TLV, then I'm going to rely on this.

Been hearing about a live-action DBZ for eons now, but I guess it's really in the works finally.  If Stephen Chow is doing it, then I have to keep hope that it's not going to be terrible.

Add to that a KOREAN (although born in California) actress to the casting list:

Jamie Chung is cast as Chi Chi (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/839/839941p1.html)

Purely for research purposes, I looked her up on Youtube:

Well, there's one plus for the film at least! :D

So Joon Park is Yamcha, Eriko Tamura is Mai (who I don't know much about cause I've only seen DBZ, not DB) so Emmy Rossum is Bulma? Hope she doesn't mind having teal coloured hair!

Oh, and I read something of the character descriptions:

Quote
PICCOLO - An ancient being who despite his humanoid appearance, is from an alien race determined to take over the world.

Oh dear. When the majority of DBZ fans hear about this, they will not be happy

somehow i can't get myself excited over this movie. I love DB/DBZ/ not-so-much DBGT (never really watch it) and still watching the anime over again, but somehow i dont' feel it for the movie. i know i should probably wait for a trailer at least and actually watch the movie before deciding, and i will, but still...

back in 2000, when DBZ was at the top of the world, there was a rumors about a movie adaptation and everyone got so excited but i guess they waited too long to make a movie now that myself and others seem to forget about it now. DB/DBZ/DBGT been over for a couple of years and nowadays it seems like bleach and Naruto is @ the top of Shonen anime/manga popularity list that DBZ is forgotten.

My point is maybe they should wait for 7-8 years, after it's popularity and anticipation has died down.

yup, i think this will be a hit or miss im more leaning to the latter. the purest and diehard fans of dbz will definitely not like this i'm guessing. i love stephan chow to death but producing the movie...well i don't really know what to think. i just don't like the fact how the chinese have been remaking alot of japanese manga/anime, not that i'm hating or anything but it just seems odd when the cast is speaking chinese and you know its based in japan etc i.e. initial-d.

i just notice, That's is Goku, a.k.a. Kakarrot (pardon the spelling, i dunno how to spell that).  He's the saiyan that came to earth to conquer it, but instead have amnesia and become it's savior. they switch goku's role with piccolo.  how can they switch the roles or screw up the story like that?

Assuming the movie will be based on the events before the DBZ storyline, the movie will probably show some scenes with Goku's early adventures searching for the Dragonballs, meeting his would-be comrades along the way, an Oozaru scene, flashbacks from the earlier Tenkaichi Budokai tournaments, fights with Pilaf and the Red Ribbon army generals, then build up into the Piccolo arc and end with the tournament where teen Goku fights teen Piccolo.

I'm just confused with what 'humanoid appearance' means. Are they giving him a humanoid appearance because of the theory that aliens either have insectoid or amoeboid forms? XD

Maybe they just want to emphasize Piccolo's evil beginnings, since he will be the main villain in the movie. In the manga/anime,Piccolo(Kami's extracted evil half) did rule the earth until Master Roshi's sensei sealed him in a rice cooker. Once he was released, he tried to conquer the world again but Goku was able to defeat him. Before he died, he puked out an egg and that egg grew into the Piccolo we all know. It was never mentioned that he was an alien though, until Raditz told him that he was Namekian and Goku was a Saiyan. They can screw up the story though, if Goku suddenly goes SSJ when he fight Piccolo.

yep, it's based on DB when the time Yamcha is still evil, not DBZ. (that's why it's called "Dragon Ball")

also, Chow Yun-Fat is gonna be Master Roshi

Bout Time!! i was wondering when they were going to start this!

seeing how they chose a grown man for the role of Goku i would this would prolly take place during the Piccolo saga, but i hope they don't really follow the story. I hope they make their own story but keep all of the character traits. Maybe like have a Goku vs. Piccolo fight in the end but in the middle show Goku and Yamcha fighting. Oh! of course with my boy Krillin.

The cast so far is....insane... :O with all these different types of races and most of them prolly don't even speak the same language, this is starting to be worrisome. Some of the other movies I've seen like this, the responses to each other aren't that good since they don't really understand what the other is saying. Hmmmm Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi?! That dude is a good actor, but for the role of Master Roshi? I don't think he has the personality for it. I'm pretty sure Master Roshi is prolly going to be just like his role in Bulletproof Monk. But for the role of Chi-Chi I'm all for it!! :D

Still looking forward to this movie. Hopefully they won't let us down

I'm worried about the film aswell. It has the potential to be good, but I dunno. Emmi Rossum, loved her in Phantom of the Opera, but I just don't think she fits in the film. lol @ Humanoid Appearance for Piccolo, this probably means he'll look like an ordinary Human like The Terminator, which basically translates to they're too lazy to cover him in green and give him antennae :( Makes me a bit sad, so far I'm not too optimistic about what it seems they're going to do to one of my favorite characters.

[youtube=425,355]dpyepHVNHNk[/youtube]

lol Piccolo.

But oh well, what're you gonna do. I still have some hopes for the film, Jamie Chung is hot and I love DBZ tons, so I'll still probably go and see this anyway.

ahem...

Quote

During one of the shooted scenes, we can see a yellow sports car that stops to attempt parking. At this moment, we suppose that Goku passes by riding a bicycle, and the car bumps into him, Goku falls down, and the bycicle is stucked under the car...

So, you are wrong... The producer thought that Goku sitting on a cloud as a means of transport was deemed 'uncool' and thus decided to have him ride a bicycle!

It's going to be epic fail.  I can just feel it.  Oh, and Goku looks like a douche. The guy over at I Watch Stuff (http://www.iwatchstuff.com) put it best when describing the Goku poster that's been going around:

"When a live-action adaptation of the fight-centric anime Dragonball was announced, there were some concerns. Was there enough hair product on real, non-anime Earth to support Goku's ridiculous coiffure? Would fans get too upset if the character's orange gi were replaced with a t-shirt with some Japanese characters on it, showing an Abercrombie-level understanding of Asian culture? Could computers still render simple glowing orbs? Make your own judgments."

Looks like another movie who's only objective is to make sales based on the title alone. This usually occurs in Video Game adaptions like (Mortal Kombat, or Dead or Alive, etc.). But Dragon Ball deserves better then this.

Don't know if this is related but in a commercial they have offic workers doing the "Kamehameha" But they misspronounce it (AS FUCKING USUAL) and say it "Ka-mee-ha-mee-ha." I thought to myself/ OK I know what Kamehameha is but Kameehameeha I've no idea!  :) Gives me a conniption whenever ppl cant pronounce words 1 time... and then keep going. Like "Morning Musoome" I just want to tell em to fuck off when they do that. Mostly when its in spanish though, since I'm 1/2 to 3/4 mexican.

Basically put, I'm not holding my breath for anything over half-assed much less fantastic!

ComingSoon.net has learned that 20th Century Fox will debut the first trailer for Dragonball in theaters on October 17 with the studio’s video game adaptation Max Payne, starring Mark Wahlberg, on October 17. We’ll have to wait and see whether Fox will release the trailer online earlier that week.

Would like to see this trailer. I don't think images do it justice on how bad this could be.

Piccolo isn't even green! That is even more fail.

And what's worse is... I actually really like James Marsters. I know you have to take what you can get in the acting world sometimes... but geez.

Brace yourselves, the first ever pic of Piccolo!

http://dbthemovie.com/images/screenshot/db9mn2.jpg
His look (both in the face makeup and the outfit he's shown wearing) is very similar to the design that was used for the Remans (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Reman) in Star Trek: NEMESIS (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Star_Trek_Nemesis).

Wow I'm cringing already, I'll try not to judge too much but this just seems a little too odd. A live-action version of this could have gone one of two ways. It went south.

What the hell! PICCOLO NEEDS TO BE GREEN! What's the point of being a Namekian if you're not green! Hell, even the planet Namek is green!! ANd what's up with the dungeon master outfit? The movie just pissed all over Piccolo fans!
PLEASE don't let my childhood cartoon be a street fighter #2...

The only thing that sold to me so far is Chow Yun Fat's sexy anime girl t-shirt, something that has complete irrelevance to the original anime and the movie adaptation.

And I though including Steven Seagal and Van Damme in the cast could save this film.  :sweatdrop:

For your interest, the trailer did show a Mustang and a Military version of Hummer.

Man... Hollywood totally fucks up the best Japanese anime/manga in the world!
And with that "monkey form" of Goku posted by Tuffty, I thought he was some Star Trek character...!!!

He's probably going to morph into Godzilla or something.

During the fight with Piccolo he'll probably do a fusion with the Hummer H2 that he drives to high school.

The movie will finish with him hanging out with his bro dudes, playing Halo 3 and working on their fake tan.

Oh dear....

I don't think that's true... O_O  Looks seriously nasty XD  And wouldn't be true to the original story which would suck more than the previews already do... Plus, the reviewer here said that Goku does turn into his monkey form O_o:

Quote
4) Oozaru - the giant monkey is in the movie. Goku turns into a 8-9 feet tall giant baboon when he looks at the moon. It was awesome looking though a bit CGI. Maybe they will fix it later.

I hope the movie isn't as crappy as it looks on the previews, coz it's such a fun story which had potential for a great movie. T_T  Stupid movie-makers...

I'm very disappointed that Goku is not played by an asian guy, since I NEVER EVER imagined Goku as anything else.... Plus, even if they didnt wanna make him asian, that dude doesn't look like a Goku at all!!!!!!! Goku is supposed to be strong looking, with wide shoulders and big expressive eyes! XD  *pouts*

/me thinks Sungmin of Super Junior would've made a somewhat better Goku XD

I might give it the benefit of the doubt, but judging by the pics, it doesn't look like DB at all to me so far, and he doesn't look like a Goku at all XD
Why does Hollywood have such a problem being true to good original stories?  :mon exhaust:
Title: Re: [Movie] 'Dragonball' comes to bigscreen

you know... it's gonna end up in the way that Japanese people get piss off from this movie, then Akira Toriyama will call the characters in Hollywood DB with different names than the original (just like Godzilla vs. Zilla, in this case will be Goku vs. Ku).

Maybe then we will see a Japanese movie of "Real DB vs. Fake DB" and have Goku kill Ku!!!
XD

Separate note.

Weekly Shonen Jump 40th anniversary Dragon Ball special w/ english subs.
(note: roughly 290mbs. and it's a .flv file, so you might need to get a player for it)

Here's the torrent:

Fun and weird seeing the characters again after such a long break.
It's all fan-service, so don't expect massive action or 5 episode fireballs.

When will they realize this just doesn't work? Seriously.. anime is often so over the top and... well, JAPANESE, that it's not going to work as an American film. If they made something true to the anime, mainstream wouldn't like it. If they Americanize it, we get this shit.
Title: Re: [Movie] 'Dragonball' comes to bigscreen
Post by: Tuffty on April 09, 2009, 12:32:38 AM
^ That certainly holds true. Although it must be said there are exceptions to the rule, but usually if the anime in question isn't quite so OTT. Monster for example, would have absolutely no problem making a Hollywood translation. But Hollywood probably wouldn't touch it anyway if they keep on going for the most popular anime/video games to adapt for easy money.

OMG it was so cheesy.  XD

And I must wonder, how come almost everyone was asian, yet Goku had to be caucasian? O_o
