Title: Please Take Care of My Club [Chapter 7 – Secrets Revealed]
Post by: lil_hamz on November 24, 2007, 09:30:01 AM
Why am I starting a new fic when I have the other thread (not updated for some time) you ask. Well, this idea came to me rather unexpectedly last night and I decided that it might be a good idea to write it down before writer's block pays me another visit. If all goes according to plan, this story should grow to include other H!P members. I hope you enjoy reading this and please comment if you can. Preferably positive ones :P

Chapter 1 - The Sprinter

Perched on a stool in the middle of the department store, I slouched down low in my seat hoping to shrink into a mini me, a midget so tiny that no one could see me without the help of a high index magnifying glass. I could feel the lady’s hand as she draws lines across my lids. I don’t know how I got talked into being the stand-in model for the young makeup artist. The twin effect of her pitiful begging and Kanna’s enthusiasm to help her probably had something to do with it.

“You should put on lip gloss and mascara more often. You could almost be considered a babe. Though the purple eye shadow might be a little too much.”

With my eyes closed, I flailed my arms around wildly to try and smack the ssexy beasting Kanna in the ass. Trust her to relish in my agony so openly when she was the reason why I was stuck here squirming under the assault of brushes and cotton pads in the first place.

Before my long limbs manage to make contact with Kanna, I heard her gasp loudly.

“What was that for?”

I questioned aloud waiting for a reply. Kanna might be noisy and boisterous but she wasn’t one to gasp for no reason. Plucking my right arm from mid air, she used her finger to write some letters on my palm.

“Are you using your middle finger again? You should stop doing that before someone mistakenly thinks you are swearing at him or her. Don’t expect me to stick around when you get beaten up.”

“Shush and concentrate!”

I clamed up at the tone of Kanna’s voice and focused my thoughts onto what my best friend was writing. This sounded serious.

R…..i…..i…..Rii.

“Rii.”

I repeated that audibly as I searched within my memory bank for what it meant. Having code names for things were handy when you wanted to gossip about people. But in our case, Kanna loved coming up with so many creative nicknames that sometimes I had trouble keeping up with all her wild labels.

“Rii, Rii?! OMG, She’s here?”

I was just about to open my eyes until I remembered the make-up artist was still working on them. Not wanting to risk getting blinded by a runaway pencil tip jabbing into my eyeball, I left them tightly shut. In actual fact, I was also too freaked to open them and risk seeing where Risako was. What would I do if she happened to walk towards us?

“She’s over at accessories.”

Kanna whispers, a little too loudly while slapping my arm.

“Is she coming over? Are you done yet lady?”

I stole a peek at the lady with one half lidded eye and asked in a desperate bid to hurry her. I had to get out of here before Risako spotted me in my hideous green tracksuit. It was a funny shade and the pants were too short. The unfortunate result of throwing it into the dryer without reading the tag carefully.

“Yes you’re done. Thank you so m…”

“Yeah whatever.”

I hopped off the stool, scooped my bag pack up from the floor, grabbed Kanna by the wrist and pulled her towards the nearest exit all in one smooth motion.

“Hold it girl, where’s the fire?!”

Ignoring Kanna’s surprised screams, I continued speeding past rows and rows of fragrances when I suddenly catch sight of my reflection in a mirrored wall and screeched to a grinding halt. The numerous freckles that I hated with a vengeance were completely erased, and my normal-sized eyes look like they took up half my face.

“Earth to Superstar Barbie!”

I wasted two whole minutes admiring my new appearance, and this prompted Kanna to take a dig at me.

“If you’re done falling in love with yourself, we have a bus to catch. Practice starts in 30 minutes. “

I nodded absentmindedly, still refusing to tear my gaze away from the new me. When out of the blue, I heard an angelic voice float into my ears.

“Aren’t you in Bio with me?”

Turning towards the direction of the voice, I found myself staring straight at the most gorgeous girl in the entire grade.

“I’m Risako…Sugaya.”

Her teeth were snowy white, smile dazzling, and I fall helplessly into the abyss of her endless black eyes.

Gawd, she is so beautiful.

“Hi, I’m Maimi.”

I anticipated myself to feel shy and end up looking like a fool, but instead, I managed to wring out a small smile and introduce myself, without choking on my saliva or collapsing in an embarrassing heap onto the floor due to jelly knees.

Hearing Kanna smack her gum behind me, I suddenly become aware of the time. But being able to breath in the same air as Risako Sugaya at such close proximity is like a dream come through and nothing could make me end it prematurely.

“Maimi Yajima. Sits behind you in Bio. She’s a track star and currently a very late one. 845-3264, Call her if you want but now we gotta run.”

I detect a slight displeasure in Kanna’s announcement as she yanks me off in the direction of the building’s automatic sliding doors. I was still in a daze as she dragged me along like a rag doll. However, I did manage to catch Risako program her silver colored cell before the glass doors slid close, all but an inch away from my thickly powered face.

I can’t believe it, Risako Sugaya knows my name.

Yes, the inspiration for the chapter title came from the 4th Berryz album

I clicked this cuz the title sounds interesting. Does it have anything that deals with a night club? :P

But anways, this story has 3 of my top members out of Berryz/C-ute, how the heck could I not read this

I'm also wondering what a silver colored cell is.

Edit: I'm such a dumbass, cell as in cellphone right? She was putting Maimi's number in there.

The Sprinter title caught my attention, but I didn't think of Maimi instead I was thinking, "Is this going to be a fic version of Pinch Runner?"  How wrong I was.

Kanna is here  :w00t: That's great, she's my second fav of c-ute.

Interesting start. I didn't know Maimi was linked to Risako in real life. Or was it not based on real life? Anyway, hope you're going to continuously update this one too.

Cool, two fics come along at once for me to read, and I haven't really satisfied my Risako fix so this should do nicely. xD

Very good start, Hammiez.
Maimi and Risako, huh? I'm very interested in seeing where this will go.
As I've never seen a pairing quite like this before.

I really liked the raaaaah, rush rush rush, must get out of here atmosphere you've created and of course, Risako simply taking out her cell and entering Maimi's number without questing where they're running off to, like it was the most normal thing in the world. LOL.

Great job! ^O^

Chapter 2 – Reminiscences and a Chance Encounter

“This is unacceptable. I expected you two to know better.”

I hung my head low, refusing to look into our captain’s eyes as she reprimanded us for being fifteen minutes late. The tinge of regret in her voice was evident and I felt even worse than I already did. Whenever coach wasn’t around, captain would be the one leading practice. She was less strict, easy-going, and a really nice person overall. Moreover, she was really pretty. Unlike the typical “beautiful” girl, my young captain didn’t have long flowing hair. Instead, she sported short neat hair, lightly colored with a hint of red. Staring at her lips as she spoke seriously, I signed inwardly. I hated to behave in anyway that disappointed her.

“Start stretching. And next time Yajima, try not to apply make-up when you come for practice.”

Shaking her head, their senior heaved a final sign before turning around and walking off towards the start line where the other girls were already in starting position.

“This wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t so hung up on Sugaya.”

Maimi’s arms were raised high above her head, in mid stretch when Kanna spoke. Cocking her head to the side, she scrutinized her friend’s face warily. Narrowed eyes, check. Pursed lips, check. This was definitely a category three on the ‘How-mad-is-Kanna’ meter.

Just as Maimi was seriously contemplating how to settle the raging fire in Kanna, the younger girl abruptly set off alone, not waiting for her regular jogging partner. Abandoning her remaining arm stretches, Maimi sped to catch up with Kanna.

“Hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make us late. You know how I feel about Risako.”

“Unfortunately I do. That’s why I can’t stay mad at you.”

A huge grin breaking out on her face, Maimi moved closer to the shorter girl and encircled her neck with a thin arm.

“Thanks Kanna, you’re my BFF friend and nothing would change that.”

“Not even Sugaya?”

“Not even Sugaya.”

-----

“Oi Kame!”

Raising a gun into the air to fire a shot, the captain signaled the start of four consecutive 800 meter rounds when she heard a familiar voice coming from the bleachers. Nevertheless, she remained standing there beneath the hot afternoon sun watching the young runners race around the track for several minutes until she was satisfied. Then jogging to the area filled with long wooden seats, she sat herself heavily down next to the girl who was almost in a sprawl position. Her large black bag stacked upright to prop herself up, the outsider of the track team had her legs stretched out in front of her as she lazily fished cheese rings from a half eaten package to pop into her mouth. Seeing her friend finally appear, she raised the packet towards her in silent offering.

“You sure took a long time to get here. Now I know who not to call in a life and death situation.”

Forming an O-shape with her mouth, Eri pointed to her own awaiting black hole and waited for her best friend to feed her. Though she was a rather sluggish person and slept a lot, the reason for not helping herself to the delicious tidbit was not laziness but health reasons. Having to handle track equipment during practice resulted in her hands being tainted by soil and grime. There was no way she would risk suffering from food poisoning by eating a snack filled with filth and grass residues. She was a turtle, not a cow.

“As usual. But Yajima and Arihara were late.”

Aiming another cheese ring into her mouth, the girl with long brownish hair and a cute nose took a sip of drink from the coke can sitting next to her before speaking again.

“Is Yajima that lanky one?”

Now sitting side by side with each other, Eri nudged her friend softly to signal wanting to eat again.

“Yeah. How did you know Gaki-san?”

“By how she far ahead she is from the rest. Don’t you know there’s a rumor going around that she’ll be the one most likely to take over as the new captain next year?”

“Really?”

Eri’s huge black eyes widened even more as she looked at Risa with genuine surprise. Why didn’t she know about this? It had to be really big news for Risa to hear of it since she wasn’t fond of gossiping. What she knew was generally told to her by others.

“Maybe if you quit falling asleep so often you’ll hear about it too.”

Ignoring Risa’s quip at poking her, which was standard procedure every time they were together, Eri rested her head on Risa’s shoulder and closed her eyes, letting them take respite from the strong glare of the sun as memories came flooding back.

~Flashback~

Monday 8.15 am. The start of a fresh term in a new school and Eri had overslept. No doubt due to the tossing and turning in bed for a good three hours from nervousness the previous night. After hastily getting ready and speeding off in record time, she clean forgot to take along the orange umbrella hanging at the corner of her desk.

Eri Kamei, you just HAD to have that extra 10 minutes of sleep didn’t you. First you missed the bus and now you are probably, no make that DEFINITELY late.

Eri scolded herself as she glanced alternately from her wrist watch to the dark sky that was pouring torrential rain. Being the reputed “rain girl,” the sky never failed to open up whenever she left the house. This time was no exception judging from the monsoon like rainfall. As she neared the metal gates of the school, Niigaki Risa spotted a girl huddled beneath the narrow roof of the empty guard post situated some distance away from the main school building. The unrelenting rain splattered down on her crisp new uniform and her hair stuck to the sides of her face. Wringing her hands and panicking like crazy, Eri was ready to cry. It was bad enough making a grand entrance by entering the class late but being both late and looking like a drowned chicken was way too much.

“Some nasty weather eh.”

Adverting her misty eyes away from the damp muddy ground, Eri looked up at the owner of the umbrella who had miraculously appeared to shelter her from the descending rain. She didn’t have bangs, which was rare for girls their age in Japan, but she did have the most genuine smile Eri had ever seen. In the end, they stepped into class dripping wet and soaked to the skin except that they both had smiles on their faces. Barely ten minutes into the year and Eri made a friend. One that she knew would accompany her through all the good times and bad.

~End of Flashback~

“Oi Kame, they are at the last lap.”

Patting Eri’s head carefully with two unstained fingers, Risa woke her from dreamland. The girl had unwittingly fallen asleep again. It was indeed a rare talent.

“I’ll be done soon. Wait for me while I change?”

It was like ritual that the two go home together everyday since the first day they knew each other. It has been four years and nothing has changed.

“Don’t I always?”

-----

Humming happily to herself, Eri skipped down the empty hallway. It was Friday, her favorite day of the week as it meant no school for two whole days. Not having to wake up early for lessons equates to being able to sleep in and this made her happy just thinking about it. Friends and relatives have frequently claimed that the perpetual sleepy expression on her face made her look lazy. She didn’t deny it but at least according to Gaki-san, she looked cute sleeping. Turning a sharp corner without looking, she almost crashed into another person coming from the other direction.

“Ah! Sorry, sorry!”

Bowing profusely, Eri almost fainted when she saw who the person she came close to mowing down was. Trying to regain her sense of balance and keep the papers in her hands steady was Ishikawa sensei.

“Kamei! Just the person I want to see!”

“Huh? I am?”

“Well, you are the first student I recognize, so, yes!”

As chirpy as ever, the tan tennis club teacher stepped closer to Eri and shoved the stack of papers into her arms.

“Please bring these down to the tennis room and pass them to the student there. I have an urgent meeting which I absolutely have to be at right now.”

“Er, okay.”

“I am grateful for your help Kamei. I will be sure to notify Fujimoto sensei that her captain is such a helpful pupil.”

-----

Volleyball… bowling…. here it is. Tennis.

It didn’t occur to Eri to knock first as she assumed the student she was supposed to hand the documents to would be expecting her. Hence she opened the door and stuck her head in nonchalantly.

Oh my god!

In that instant, Eri found herself staring open-mouthed at the undressed occupant of the tennis club room. A good twenty seconds passed before a high-pitched scream snapped her out of it. Recovering quickly, she scooted out of the room and shut the door with a loud bang.

The experience was truly worthy of being impressed in Eri’s mind for eternity. The student was tall and slim, had jet-black luscious hair that fell below her fair and creamy shoulders. And shimmering black orbs for eyes that were utterly breathtaking.

“Erm, you can come in now.”

chokkan 2: If reading this makes you hyper, you can try checking for updates before work or school to keep you awake :D

modesta107: Nope, not night club but more like clubs in school XD

g4rfield: I’m actually not sure if Maimi and Risako are close in real life, but as most of the kids look pretty interchangeable, I thought to give it a try :P

Cookie Holiday: I never tried writing anything based on the kids so I hope this doesn’t disappoint you *crosses fingers*

Amarghetta: Thanks for the nice words : )

Brat-san: Yeah I know! I never thought of these 2 together before this either

Lollipopgirl: You really made my day with your comment. *HAPPI~~*

Sevii: Haha, yup that is pretty funny, Risako being strangely unflappable character.

Lmao at Eri staring at the girl for 20 seconds before she noticed XD That's gonna be a bit of an awkard scene when Eri re-enters the room.
I'm guessing the girl was Sayu? But then there is a chance that it's JunJun. ~Roots for Sayu~

That girl was Mshige I'm sure. She once mentioned being in the tennis club in school so... And the description really fits.

Yeah it has to be Sayu, not even JunJun fits the description as perfectly as Sayu does... So does that mean a GakiKameSayu love triangle? :P But what about Ai-chan? :(

Poor Kanna, she's always the best friend and never the love interest, lol... And yes, Maimi is a freak of nature when it comes to running, hopefully Risako will come watch her train one day :wriggly:

Chapter 3 – The New Arrival

“I don’t understand how you can resist the charms of Risako.”

It was after practice and the two friends were standing at the school gates, waiting for a certain someone.

“Easy, I just don’t think she’s all that great.”

Kanna replied easily, tearing at the wrapper of a new stick of gum. Crushing the now ripped paper in one hand, she tossed the empty wrapper into the trash bin that stood a few feet away.

“Are you serious? She’s beautiful.”

A dreamy look appeared on Maimi’s face as soon as she thought of Risako Sugaya. The earlier meeting at the mall had left her in high spirits and she was nowhere near leaving 7th heaven yet.

“Maybe. But I prefer someone with qualities other than looks. An all-rounder.”

Climbing onto the low boundary wall of the compound, Maimi sat swinging her legs as she pondered over who the mysterious all-rounder could be. Besides herself, the only other person who came into the most contact with Kanna was…

“I’m so sorry! I got held up!”

Bent over and panting loudly, I took in huge breaths of air to recover from running all the way from the changing room. I was glad I had decided to tie my hair in the high-bun style today. Otherwise strands of my hair would definitely be flying about and I didn’t want her to see me in any state other than my best. Forgetting to seek forgiveness for my lateness, I bowed apologetically at my friends as I struggled to catch my breath. Kanna kindly took over the shoe bag in my hand and swung it over her shoulder as she waited for me to stand upright.

“It’s her! She’s the one!”

Jerking my head towards the tall individual who had suddenly hollered, I watched with a confused expression as Maimi jumped off from the wall and pointed at me in an exaggerated manner.

“You look out for her a lot. And you two walk home together practically everyday. I’m sure of it, the person is you!”

Still lost with the conversation that was taking place, I looked to Kanna for answers. But she only shook her head and rolled her eyes. An action that she did whenever she thought someone was doing or saying something ridiculous.

“Maimi, I knew you had problems when you liked Sugaya. I just didn’t know it was so bad.”

“You mean it’s not her?”

The gears that were working in overdrive clicking away at five miles per second in Maimi’s head now slowly whined to a halt. She was so confident of her deduction skills only for them to be swept down by Kanna in one straight-faced statement.

“But….but…she’s an all-rounder! She’s the class monitor, in futsal and is pretty too.”

“I suppose I should thank you for thinking so highly of me?”

Watching Maimi stammer away was a funny sight, and I would have burst out laughing if I wasn’t so interesting in finding out what she was talking about. Standing adjacent to me, Kanna heaved a loud sigh of exasperation before replying.

“Firstly, we walk home together because we live in the same house. Second, it’s natural that I look out for her since I’m older. Lastly…”

Kanna stopped chewing her gum and eyed Maimi with a solemn expression.

“We’re cousins, that’ll never happen.”

Folding her arms, Kanna waited for the words to sink in. Maimi blinked a couple of times at Kanna, turned to gaze at me, and then went back to blinking. I grinned as I waited to see if she could come up with any other reaction other than imitating a fish. Apparently not. After bidding us goodbye Maimi headed for the bus stop in the opposite direction we were taking. Embarrassed at making such a huge boo-boo, she made us promise never to tell anyone the ‘clever’ inference she had come up with today.

“Your friend is hilarious.”

Walking in step, I teased my cousin mercilessly for having such a comical friend. Even though I knew Maimi too from seeing her around, we only started speaking after Kanna introduced us. I always thought she was the cool track star of the junior section. It didn’t occur to me that she could be such a space cadet as well. It did seem that she would make a good replacement for Kamei senpai. The current captain of the track team, also famous for her strange peculiarities.

“Don’t mind her. Having solely Sugaya on her mind has made her quite mad.”

Nodding silently, I understood what Kanna was going through. It had to be hard having to share your best friend with another person. Especially when that person wasn’t known to be anything other than a pretty face.

“Let me tell you something that will cheer you up.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, Kanna’s eyes lit up and she turned to face me with anticipation.

“Airiin, you know me best!”

“Of course. Today, Natsuyaki…”

-----

Risa looked at her watch for the umpteen time. Eri was late. Usually she wouldn’t mind waiting for the dawdling turtle except that today she had to be home early. There was something important that she had to see too, and if she didn’t handle it well, it wasn’t going to be a pretty sight.

“Gaki… Gaki-san!”

The tiny speck of the said turtle grew larger as she neared the bicycle park at the back of the school. Unlocking her bicycle, Risa pulled it out of its bay and maneuvered it around to face the exit. Getting on it, she waited for Eri to climb on. As soon as she did, Risa zoomed off immediately, leaving a small puff of dust and sand behind.

“Sorry, sorry! But you wouldn’t believe what happened.”

Risa didn’t need more to be convinced that the matter that thrilled Eri so had to be rather amazing. From the short glance that Risa caught of her reddish face, and how highly excitable her voice is now, it must have been incredible.

“I wish I could be more eager to hear about it Kame. But I’m late.”

“Oh no!”

Slapping her thigh with the hand not wrapped around Risa’s waist, Eri exclaimed loudly. She totally forgot that Risa was expecting someone at her house today and she needed to be there to opened the door. Feeling remorseful for delaying her, Eri tried to make amends.

“Instead of dropping me off first like you always do, let’s go to your house straight. I can walk home from there.”

A smile appeared on Risa’s face when she heard the suggestion. It was a good idea and it would ensure that she wouldn’t be later than she already was. No longer worried about the time, she could pay attention to what Eri wanted to say.

“You can tell me all about what happened now Kame. I’m all ears.”

As the bicycle whizzed down the street towards the neighborhood they lived in, Eri articulated animatedly all about her encounter with the mysterious raven-haired maiden. The pitch of her voice went crescendo when she talked about how she barged into the room and chanced upon a girl changing.

-----

…she opened the door and stuck her head in nonchalantly.

Gingerly pushing open the door, Eri stepped in apprehensively. What should she say to the girl she had violated. She didn’t even dare to look up at her in case their eyes met. The two stood in awkward silence until the taller girl spoke.

“Are you here to pass me something?”

Finally noticing the papers in her hand, Eri gasped and stuck out both arms at 120 degrees to hand them over, still not looking up. In a dramatic twist of fate, she had thrust the papers straight into the girl’s face causing her to step back and lose her balance. Hearing the surprised yelp that escaped her, Eri reacted just in time to drop the papers and rush forward to catch her.

A sudden strong breeze entered the compact room, floating the sheets of paper in a magical whirl of white. Now with the maiden below, snug and safe in the arms of the turtle prince who had so gallantly rescued her from the attack of the monster documents, a slight blush appeared on her milky face. The silky hair tangled in Eri’s fingers caused a strange sensation in her heart and she couldn’t help but gulp, twice.

“Erm, you can let me go now.”

“Ah! Sorry, sorry!”

Eri’s face flushed a deep crimson red and she was so embarrassed she kept bowing and going backwards until she hit the door. With a concluding SORRY! Eri exited the room taking off like a speeding bullet not looking back.

-----

“So you basically saw her naked and kissed her?”

Risa’s voice drifted from the front of the bicycle to the back where Eri sat, still distressed that she had left with such a bad impression.

“I didn’t kiss her!”

“You wanted too, admit it.”

Risa’s voice was gleeful. She enjoyed making her turtle friend so flustered. It was their last year at the school and if Eri could find someone she truly liked, it might not be a bad ending to their high school life.

“I….”

“Yikes! She has arrived.”

Straightening her back to peep from behind Risa, Eri saw the outline of a tall girl standing in front of Risa’s house. There were two giant duffel bags at her feet and another smaller one slung across her back. As the bicycle neared her, Eri observed the grim expression she wore.

Living with her can’t be good.

g4rfield Sevii Estrea modesta107: I might reveal who the girl is in the next chapter. Do keep a look out for the update if you wanna find out :P

wordsworth: That’s a nice pic of Maimi and Risako! Where is it from? I love that pose they did with Maimi’s arm around Risako and her holding Maimi’s hand

meowz: I’m happy that my descriptive writing can invoked an image of a certain girl :)

Lollipopgirl: Kanna will have her time XD

Lol Maimi's such a dolt here. XDD I do wonder what kind of person Kanna would like. Haha. Airi <3. XDD

GakiKame best friends combi~ <3 Me likes. Haha the turtle prince part made me laugh. Risa teasing Eri was gold too.

I wonder who's that mysterious person in front of Risa's house (and is coming to stay with her). Tall definitely rules out Aichan, that's for sure. Considering how you're making the older musume the teachers (like Rika and Miki), I'm guessing this one can't be one of the older ones. Junjun? Ehhh. Um. Koharu? But "grim expression"...

...this is hard. >_>

Eh whatever, I'll just sit here and wait for developments. XD

Poor Maimi can't think straight when they talk about Risako!

Hehe, I wonder what Airi's story about Miya is? Caught sleeping in class?  :P

Another mystery person at the end? Is she the same one Eri caught undressing in the tennis club's room? :o

About the pic, they're from mag scans I posted way back in the Risako thread. Maimi and Risako will be in some kind of Ski event but I don't know the details since I haven't seen any news about it yet aside from the scans. :)

So could Miyabi possibly be the girl Kanna prefers?
lol, that's gonna be really awkard if the girl at Risa's house turns out to be the person Eri walked in on. And if Risa finds out, there's definitely be more teasing from her :P
awesome chapter :yep:

Hmmm, my guess for the girl at Risa's house is Miyabi and that's what Airi was gonna tell Kanna :P (man i suck at this, )

And you did say Kanna will get her chance so it will be interesting to see who it will be and if its Miyabi, even more interesting :)

GakiKame friendship is so cute
And you're so cruel not revealing Eri's naked friend!

(still hang on to hope for TakaGaki :D)

Chapter 4 – Girl Next Door

“Why don’t I see her?”

Whining and pulling at the ends of her sweater, Eri leaned against the lockers as she waited for Risa to finish up at the water fountain. For the past few days, she had gone around the school, forcing Risa along, in the hopes of “accidentally” bumping into the dark-haired beauty. But no matter how many rounds she made in the cafeteria or hung around the concourse, she never did see her.

“Considering the student population of this school, I’m not surprised. You could though, visit the tennis room and seek her out.”

After suggesting her invaluable advice, Risa returned to quenching her thirst. She didn’t understand why Eri had to choose the long and winding method over the fast one. Since she was definitely related to the tennis club, it was a no brainer that she would turn up at the room within the week.

“I can’t! Don’t you understand Gaki-san? I can’t appear desperate.”

Jumping around and pounding her fists on an invisible table, Eri rested her forehead on Risa’s right shoulder, still mumbling under her breath about why god made it so difficult for her to meet the girl of her dreams again.

“You can get to see her sooner. Isn’t that what you want? I know it’s what I want to get you off my back. I can’t stand having to go around with you anymore.”

Pushing Eri’s head off with a light flick of her wrist, Risa started walking towards the classroom where she had her next class.

“Besides, the janitor has been giving me strange looks. He probably thinks I’m gonna vandalize something and am checking out the area before my evil deed.”

Following Risa, Eri sighed loud enough for her friend to hear. Then pouting cutely, she tugged at Risa’s sleeve and peered into her eyes. This was the sure-fire way to make Risa obey her every whim and fancy.

“Argh! Stop it, STOP it! Don’t look at me like that.”

“Then you’ll come with me after school today?”

“Whatever, but it’s the last time. I’m gonna be busy getting her settled in.”

“Who’s her? Oh, her.”

Stopping outside Risa’s classroom, Eri knelt down to access her locker situated at the bottom level of two rows. As she turned the knob of the lock to input her code, she continued talking to her friend.

“I still don’t understand why your mom took her in. She’s really mean.”

“She wasn’t like this before. She was a good kid.”

Recalling the happenings of the previous afternoon, Eri couldn’t see how the new arrival could have ever been nice. She not only left all her luggage outside to be carried into the house by Risa, she even yelled at the older girl for being late.

“You can introduce us after she becomes a better person. Otherwise there’s no way I’m having anything to do with her Gaki-san.”

Fingering the beaded bracelet she wore around her wrist, Risa promised herself that she would do whatever it takes to change the young girl back to how she once was. The chirpy and enthusiastic kid who greeted everyone with a bright smile. She had to.

-----

After Eri managed to locate what she needed from the dark and musty locker that stored a rotten apple, a mess of papers, a pair of rain-soaked socks and two training shorts, she uttered a rushed ‘bye!’ and ran off towards her own class with notebook and assignment in hand. Entering the room, Risa walked along the aisle leading to the back where an empty seat was positioned near the windows. From the corner of her eye, she noticed a pencil fall and roll across the floor. Bending down with the intention of picking it up, she banged heads with another girl who was doing the same. Shooting up one hand to rub at the small bump that was growing, Risa’s line of sight connected with the owner of the pencil sitting in the seat right in front. The girl grinned widely, crinkling her nose in a cute manner and revealing a row of straight teeth underneath her pinkish lips.

“Thanks.”

-----

The streets were deserted at this time of the day when most people were in school or at work. A lone figure skipped home happily swinging her bag and whistling a tune. It was great not having to engage in a shoving match with people to get on the bus. The added luxury of getting to spend less time on the bus with it making fewer stops along the journey home further enticed the young rebel to skip last period.

You are too smart girl.

Grinning to herself, she didn’t notice the spray of water that was coming her way until she was suddenly drenched from head to toe, water droplets dripping from the ends of her lightly colored hair.

“What the hell?!”

Wearing an irritated expression, she stomped fuming into the garden all ready to give the person responsible for her plight a piece of her very angry mind. There, she came face to face with a girl who was holding onto a green rubber hose and directing the water left and right in short quick motions.

“What the hell are you doing!”

Looking up at the uninvited individual, the girl continued spraying water and replied nonchalantly.

“Watering the flowers, what else?”

“Who the hell waters plants while aiming the jet at innocent passersby?”

“Innocent? I don’t think so.”

Sneering at the shorter girl who wore her uniform with sleeves rolled up, skirt way too high above her knees, tube socks and generously accessorized with gold jewelry, she went back to playing with the water.

Nobody talks to me like that!

Annoyed that some girl younger than herself would be speaking to her in such a tone after causing her to look a drippy mess, the raging fire in the petite sized girl flared up. Stalking over to the teenager still squirting water at the rows of flowers in their little flower beds, she grabbed and pulled hard at the collar area of the other’s round-neck t-shirt.

“Apologize. Now.”

Peering down at the shorter girl, the lanky teen took no heed of her menacing tone and instead made fun of her attacker’s height by talking over the top of her head.

“Why should I?”

“I said apologize.”

Trying to keep her voice even to conceal how she really felt, the tinted hair girl decided to give the poor clueless child another chance before lashing out and tearing her apart. After all, she did promise someone never to pick a fight again. But every ounce of her willpower shattered when the almost gleeful voice of the youth chimed out like a clear bell.

“Make me.”

“Argh! You’re really pushing my buttons!”

With a Red Indian like shriek, her fist shot out and she struck the smirking girl on the side of her face that sent her falling to the ground. Not one to take any crap thrown her way either, the young teenager threw down the hose in her hand and seized a handful of her assailant’s hair. This was war.

-----

Risa was in a fairly good mood today. The last period she had with Eri ended early and allowed them the rare opportunity of heading for home before the evening crowd set in. She had just dropped off Eri at her place and was on her own way home, enjoying the cooling breeze and the breathtaking scenery of the setting sun when she heard shouting voices emerge from the direction of her house. Pedaling furiously, she picked up speed on her trusty bicycle and made the final bend where her double-story split level house stood.

From outside the relatively low white picket fences, she could see two figures rolling on the grass, clawing at faces and tearing away at each other’s hair. The scene was much like two stray female cats caught in a fight for sole possession of a single male cat.

Running into the compound of the house, Risa groaned when she realized who the two were. She should have known better than to hope the new occupant of her home would not stir up trouble in the few hours that she wasn’t around to keep an eye on her. And when you’re living next door to the notorious toughie of the street, something was bound to happen.

“Tanakacchi! Koharu! Break it up!”

-----

Holding up the large over-sized sunglasses barely successful at staying balanced on her nose, the slim and petite girl struggled to reach her cell phone in her right skirt pocket. She couldn’t spot her date anywhere in the cozy café filled with loving couples. Not an empty seat in sight, she growled and grumbled at making it out the door later than she had planned. Arriving at this time meant having to contend with the lunchtime crowd. However, spending the greater part of her morning trying to conceal the huge purplish bruise on her face took precedence over being crushed in the human waves of people.

“Over here! Reinaaaaaaaaaaa!”

Turning her head around a couple of times, Reina failed to see where the voice was coming from. Everyone passing by her to get to the counter were annoyingly taller and obstructed her view of the tables. Tiptoeing, she finally saw the familiar face of her friend.

“And so I ended up fighting with this stupid kid, I don’t know what her problem was, it’s like she was picking a fight or something.”

Telling every bit of the story leading up to why she had to slap on nearly 2/3 of her brand new concealer and throw on a pair of out-of-fashion sunglasses for extra measure on a gloomy day made Reina increasingly agitated as she recalled the events of the previous day.

“I still can’t believe I actually fought with a child. A CHILD!”

Rambling on, Reina only realized her friend wasn’t paying her any attention when her head of dark hair bobbed along, nodding at all the wrong times.

“Hey, are you listening to me? I’m speaking here!”

“Reina, have you ever felt your heart beating so fast it could explode?”

“Huh?”

Now Reina was really lost. When did any part of her monologue mention anything about hearts beating at high-speed? Unconsciously fingering at the mark on her cheek that was slowly swelling, her eyes narrowed considerably when it hit her that what her companion was talking about had absolutely nothing to do with her.

“What the hell Sayumi, we’re supposed to be talking about me.”

Haha, don't worry, it came out exactly the way you told it to me! So it's all good!

Besides, pissed off Reina = love. XD

Aha, Reina is friends with Sayu. XDD Lemme guess, the person who made Sayu go doki doki is Eri (aka the encounter in the tennis room).

Can't wait to see how you write out the stuff you told me that time. >D

I'm glad you identified most of the unknown characters at the end here. I was starting to get confused keeping track of them all! lol.  You've got quite a few different stories going on here, but they all seem fun. :) A bit of the traditional... (TakaGaki, KameShige...) A bit of the unconventional... (Maimi/Risako?, Kanna/whoever XD) Keep it up! Your stories are very enjoyable reads. :)

 Chapter 5 - Monumental First-Period Class

The bell chimed, signalling the start of first period. Stifling a yawn, Kanna blinked and rubbed her weary eyes.

Monday. Agh I hate it.

Taking out her denim pencil case decorated with colorful iron-ons, Kanna unzipped it and fished out a pencil. Ms Iida was most likely going to step into class any moment now. She was never late and it helped to be prepared just in case she started staring down at students who were not dutifully ready to copy down notes. Those scary eyes of hers gave Kanna the creeps.

"Didn't sleep well last night?"

Sitting beside her, Maimi asked as she observed another yawn escape her suntanned short friend.

"I was thinking about some things."

"Do you wanna talk about it?"

Mami deduced it had something to do with Kanna's family. Having known her for ages, she knew just about everything that went on in her friend's life. From the death of her father to the moving in of Airi and her mom into their home. Kanna and Airi were cousins, bonded by the marriage of their parents who were siblings. They were a closely knit family and the news of both their father's death in the same freak automobile accident was devastating for the girls. Not to mention they were barely ten when it happened. Throughout it all, Maimi had been there, lending Kanna a shoulder to cry on and a comforting hug when it all became too much.

"I'm probably overreacting, but household expenses seem to be going up."

"I could ask my dad if he needs help at the store. I'm sure things will be busier with the festive season rolling by."

"Really? Thanks Maimi!"

Getting off the high stool she was sitting on, Kanna reached over to give Maimi a big hug. A job at the Yajima grocery store would be fun. And since her dad was an easy-going man, a pay advance would be negotiable should the need arise.

"Ahem."

Breaking apart, the two girls were surprised to see Risako staring at them. Chewing on her lower lip, she hesitated before speaking.

"I'm not interrupting you two I hope?"

"No, no! Not at all."

Shaking her head immediately, Maimi was quick to reassure her angel. Risako could drop by at any moment and she would never find it inconvenient.

Smiling a little and with shining eyes, Risako did a half-pout with her lips. Her little action blew the minds of anyone who was watching.

"Would you like to be my lab partner for the rest of the year?"

Maimi's eyebrows almost flew off her face when she hear Risako's words. Her ears weren’t playing tricks on her were they? Seeing the pure delight that radiated from the beam on Maimi’s face, Kanna couldn’t match her friend’s smile even if her life depended on it.

"Me?"

"Yes. You are Maimi aren't you."

Risako's teasing accompanied by her soft giggle had an obvious effect on her admirer. Maimi turned crimson and she couldn't stop grinning like a hyena. Skittering to gather her belongings from the table, Maimi couldn't wait to join her dream girl at the bench further up front. The explosion of noise that erupted among the girls in class was no doubt a discussion of what just happened. The face of the cheerleading squad inviting the star of the track team to be lab partners. This was without a doubt going to be the news of the year.

"Maimi, aren't we lab partners?"

Pulling Maimi back down such that the lanky girl fell hard sitting down on the stool, an indignant Kanna narrowed her eyes and refused to release her.

"I've had about enough of that Sugaya. Fancy waltzing in and stealing MY partner like this?"

"Kanna, I'm begging you. Anyone will give anything to be near Risako. And now she has asked me, ME!"

Struggling to free herself from Kanna's death grip, Maimi whined and pleaded. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and she couldn't afford to lose it.

"You're the ace of the track team, future captain and state-wide star. Will you quit acting like a puppy-dog whenever it concerns Sugaya?"

"I don't know why. She has this effect on me. My knees go weak just looking at her Kanna. This is more than a crush. I might have fallen in love with her."

At Maimi's final sentence, Kanna let go if her arm. Then helping to stack the remaining of Maimi's possessions together into a neat bundle, Kanna pushed them into her arms.

"Agh, fine, go. You're grossing me out with the love declaration. You can be her partner. Just make sure I'm the one you save first if both of us fall into the water."

As soon as Maimi bounded happily over to sit obediently next to Risako, someone came up to Kanna.

"Hi, is this seat taken?"

-----

"All rise! Bow!"

The class obediently carried out the morning ritual of greeting the teacher before settling into their seats and concentrating on class. Airi did the same, or at least she appeared to be listening to the teacher's droning voice. In reality, she was observing the movements of a certain member of her History class.

She has such long lashes.

Her lips are so fine. They kinda look like mine.

She unwittingly wore a sweet smile on her face as her eyes remained enthralled by the object of her fantasies, all other going-ons in the class blocked out by the sheer image of the Liliputian. Scribbling intently in her notebook, the fair-skinned pupil, tiny for her age, was blissfully unaware of how the class monitor was paying particular attention to her.

"Suzuki, how many years did the isolation of the Tokugawa shogunate span?"

Fully enraptured by her classmate, Airi didn't hear the teacher calling her name. Her daydream was only broken when the girl she was watching turned back to look at the monitor who was being totally unresponsive to the teacher's instructions. In fact, most of the class were now staring at her and waiting for some sort of reaction. Finally realizing that all eyes were on her, Airi gulped and blushed a faint shade of pink. It’s a good thing her teacher was a tolerant and kind lady, or else she would surely have been ordered out of the class. Thanking her lucky stars for having a pleasant educator, Airi requested apologetically.

"I'm sorry Ms. Yasuda. Could you please repeat the question?"

-----

Scrutinizing her make-up from the reflection in the small compact mirror she held in one hand, Reina was careful to make sure there were no smudges. She wasn't going to walk around the halls with less than perfect make-up. She wasn't always so vain. There was a time where she had better things to do than check on her make-up every ten minutes. But those days were long gone. All thanks to her grandmother no less. For making her fulfill a promise which had left her with so much spare time. Before she could find something else to take up, make-up will have to do. Bored, she angled the mirror in different directions to survey what the rest of the class were up to. There was one girl in the last row picking her nose, another tying her shoelaces and one more snacking away. Hers was definitely no model class.

"This semester, we have a new transfer student. Please introduce yourself."

"I am Koharu Kusumi, from Niigata."

The class and teacher waited for more to come but apparently that was all. The new student was no talker. Nor was she respectful and well-mannered. Her self-introduction did not even conclude with the customary “Please take care of me.”

That voice.....where have I heard it before? It sounds like...

A look of distress flashed across Reina's feminine features when she remembered where she had come into contact with such a repulsive voice. Lowering the mirror so she could see in full view the entire front area of the class, Reina's jaw dropped, revealing a lower row of jagged teeth when she saw the familiar smirking face of her nemesis.

...Risa Niigaki's sister.

First off, I apologise for such a short and crappy chapter. Still, I hoped you enjoyed reading it. Many thanks to Estrea, AmberSan, modesta107 and rokun for leaving comments. It's good to know there are actually people reading this XD

2 words: RISAKO-MAIMI!!!! :farofflook: :luvluv1: :imdead:

Poor Kanna getting ditched like that. But Maimi does have a pretty valid point. Don't know if I should laugh at her misfortune though. Her new seatmate seems to be nice. Time for her to do her moves. :mon misch:

Hmm. Airi's got her eyes on someone too. Clues are:

Long eyelashes: = Chinami or Chisato?
Liliputian = Captain? XD
Small for her age = Captain! XD

Either way, Airi's got pretty good taste.  :mon inluv:

LOL the Reina-Koharu war has reached the school. I smell Turn Dori Chicken Battle  :mon yoyo: :mon yoyo:

LOL i realy like the Non-Canon-ness of this fic...
like wordsworth said the person Airi was looking at seems to be Captain...
wonder why Reina and Koharu fought.. and what is the story behind Gaki and Koharu's sister relationship(they don't have the same last name).
please continue this fic...
just a little question, is there a chance for Takagaki?..

Lol no kidding about the sharp departure from canon! Not that a whole lot of kids' pairings are terribly "canon" yet... I guess Miyabi/Risako, uhhh... nothing else really has a whole lot of evidence behind it. But if that's seriously going to be Airi/Captain... XD THAT will be .

Anyway, I felt bad for Kanna with Maimi ditching her like that, but not so much when she quickly got a new lab partner that I have a feeling will more than make up for it. :yep:

Also... why do I sense a Reina/Koharu coming up...? This fic is so relationship-centric, and those two definitely have got something bad for each other. ;)

I also think that there's going to be reina/koharu, but I'm not sure... they can be only rivals, though...
all pairings are interesting! maimi should act soon, because risako already acted by asking her to be her partner... also, I'm so curious about the other student that airi was watching... we already know that she's a small girl... so it can be momoko, chisato, captain, nakajima... Aahhh, I don't know!!!
keep it up!  :)

Risako is a cheerleader in this fic? , ha, I love it XD   wow, Maimi possibly in love with Risako already? It must have been a love at first sight moments  :inlove:

The girl in Airi's class...I gotta go with Momo as my guess

So Koharu is Risa's sister? Or is that just was Reina thinks? I thought Koha was just a troubled grl staying with Risa and her family...I should probably go back and read some parts

This fic in really climbing up in my top ranked H!P stories that have a school setting :)

Haha, all the speculation and I can't bring myself to join in because I already know half of what's going to happen next. XD The joys of knowing the author personally, I guess. XD

But yay Risako/Maimi! I love this crack pairing for the sole reason that Maimi is so pitifully head over heels for Risako. XDDD I wonder what kind of complications you will introduce to this couple eventually? XDDD God knows we could use some Maimi-being-jealous (it'd be cute if nothing else). Hehe.

I do so wonder who Airi is looking at. *already knows, but won't say a word* XD

Oooh, Kanna's new seat partner. Looks like the start of a beautiful friendship. :D Now that Maimi's otherwise occupied, I guess Kanna has to find someone else to hang out with at least half the time, hehe.

Can't wait for the next chapter. XD Don't worry about the shortness, we're not expecting you to deliver 10k-wordcount monsters like I do. XDDD Keep it up! Oh and see you later. :P

^ "Chinami's new seat partner."  :dunno: Chinami??? Chinami's the one who asked to be Kanna's new lab partner?

Hmmm... Risako, Cheerleader.. Maimi, sports jock.. Kanna, Maimi's low profile best friend.. now why do I get this odd feeling that Risako has some ulterior motives with Maimi, and that the person Kanna like is actually her blinded-by-love best friend? I guess I must have watched too much high school flicks in the past.

Well I'm not gonna guess who Airi's current crush is... only cuz I'm not familiar with any of the kids's trademarks. :D But for some reason I'm kinda hoping it's Nakki~

Going for a more mysterious route to writing huh? I don't remember having to guess and speculate so much from your fics. xD!

This is certainly going to be amusing now that Koharu is going to be Reina's classmaaaate~! That'll certainly liven up the class a bit! ¦D

Maimi and Risako are adorable <3 You'd think Maimi would have a little more self-control since she's older but oh well. xD.

And you better write more uh... insanely cute situations with Gaki-san and Aichan <3 The baka couple must live ooon~ ¦D

That's right! You wrote The Lines Are Blurred too, didn't you Hammy? Dang you write some good stuff! :D Even if it's not as much as *cough* some people... >.> I mean, these are two of the few fics here I've actually read (almost) fully.

Hmm, speaking of, I'm not sure if I ever finished that... Well keep this up!

Oh, and I was going to say, despite all my Airi/Captain-ness, I almost have to say it's Momo now (thinking of the long eyelashes too). It could be Chisato but...

I've been so busy preparing for uni (and still am) that I haven't had time to catch up on all your updates much less comment so this is a bit late...but! These new chapters just keeps getting more interesting.
Kame trying to find her 'dark-haired beauty' lol! I couldn't help but laugh at her "...I can’t appear desperate.” line

Ahh..so the new girl at gaki-san's house is Kusumi! No wonder you described her as tall XD GJ writing Kusumi's unusual character, I can imagine her all angry-disobedient-rebel-like now. Come to think of it, it kinda matches her face imo *looks at kanashimi twilight pics*

With everyone mentioning your previous fic 'The Lines are Blurred' reminds me...It's actually the first H!P fic I ever read and the fic that brought me to this forum lol (and now I'm totally corrupted  :P)

Chapter 6 – The Way of Life

“You know Kame, it would do you a whole lot of good to try waking up on time once in a while.”

Shaking her head and speaking in a resigned voice, Risa unzipped her bag and reached for the folded set of newspapers she had tucked in before she left the house. The duo of GakiKame, as fondly known to their friends, had arrived in school late, AGAIN. By the time the last warning bell rang, they still have not reached the school gates. It was as usual the result of Eri not getting to the Niigaki household at the designated time.

“I do try Gaki-san. I set the clock, sleep early and wish really hard the night before to wake up when I’m supposed to. Somehow it never works.”

“Perhaps you need more alarm clocks. Or you could ask your alien friends to beam you a signal from space informing you when it’s time to wake up.”

Grinning widely, Risa teased her friend playfully. Eri was the easiest person to make fun of out of all her friends. The ample childish actions, babyish expressions and immature opinions and views of the turtle girl were all areas a good tsukkomi could never miss out on. Satisfied at getting her revenge for missing first period, Risa went back to scrutinizing the newspaper that she had spread out in front of her.

“I know for sure waking up on time wouldn’t be a problem if SHE was the one rousing me.”

Eri slipping into sudden daydreams about the mysterious beauty had become such a regular occurrence over the past two weeks that Risa was now rather immune to Eri’s ramblings. In fact she had successfully trained herself to block out any sentences that contained the words ‘dark-hair’ and ‘beautiful’. After some time of not hearing any response from Risa, Eri realized the slightly older girl wasn't paying her any attention. Upset, she snatched away the section of the newspapers that Risa was reading intently and refused to return them until her friend paid her full attention.

"You aren’t listening to me Gaki-san!"

"Yes I know, I know. Your elusive raven-haired princess hasn't made an appearance. You've been telling me that everyday for the last fourteen days."

Sighing dramatically, Risa reached for the newspapers held in Eri's stretched out hands and tried to grab them back. She had spotted a particularly interesting advert just before Eri went into her little attention-seeking mode. She tended to do that every few days.

"But this is important to me Gaki-san. I can't believe you're paying more attention to words printed on inferior paper."

Looking at the faint streaks of black residue left on her fingers with obvious abhorrence, Eri grudgingly returned the sheets of papers to Risa. Then fishing out a small pack of wet wipes from her pocket, she wiped at her fingers carefully, determined to disinfect every inch of her fingers thoroughly.

"These are called newspapers Kame. You know those documents produced by the state daily to keep citizens up to date about the happenings in the world?"

"I know that. I just don't see what's so interesting about them. You can find out about world events from the television. Those are so much more convenient and clean."

Mouthing a silent “oh right”, Risa almost forgot about Eri being the clean freak that she is. Never failing to leave the house with a packet of heavy duty sterile wipes in her bag, this was a girl who at last count, had four jumbo sized packs stashed away in a special compartment of her bag. These are for special emergencies, she once said when Risa brought up the issue. She had tried convincing Eri that a single person would never require such a plentiful supply of top quality sanitized wipes unless germ warfare broke out only to be met with Eri dismissing her as not being hygienic enough.

"News programs on telly don’t come with the classifieds Kame. I need that since I'm looking for a job."

As Eri pulled out a third piece of wipe to clean her hands, Risa flipped back to the page she was originally looking at and memorized the details written in the small advertisement at a corner of the page.

"A job? What for? Are you in debt?"

Unable to contain her amusement, Risa exploded with laughter at Eri's question. Hanging out with Eri certainly injected much delight in her life. Seeing Eri ask questions with such a straight face, you would be fooled into thinking she was cracking a joke. Except that after being friends with her for so long, Risa knew it was a genuine question.

"No, I'm not in debt Kame. I just want to earn some money and buy Koharu a nice welcome gift."

"You're so nice to her. You’re never that nice to me. For one, you never bought me anything."

Pouting and folding her arms, Eri felt a little hurt. This new girl was taking up a lot of Risa's time and she didn’t like it. Risa was her best friend so naturally, she should spend the most time with her.

"I don't buy you stuff but I make them. See, the earrings you're wearing, necklace, bracelet and even your cell phone dangle. They were all presents from me aren't they?"

"Well, yeah...but you’ve have never taken up a job for me."

Inside, Eri knew she was behaving childishly and acting immature for getting upset over Risa's sister. She didn't know the details but according to Risa, Koharu had a pretty harsh life. It was expected that Risa would want to make her feel welcome and happy. After all, she was a really kind and caring person.

"Where is this leading? Don't tell me you're jealous."

Grinning mischievously, it suddenly dawned on Risa that the reason for Eri's unhappiness was due to the fact that she was putting a lot of effort into pleasing Koharu. In the past, most of her time was spent on Eri.

"I'm not jealous!"

Blushing considerable, Eri turned away to hide her pink and flushed cheeks. She wasn't going to own up about how much she envied Koharu for having someone so concerned for her. Although she was secretly afraid that the younger girl was going to take her place in Risa’s heart.

"Come on Kame. She's my sister. Besides, you have your raven beauty."

"It's Raven-HAIRED beauty. You make her sound like she’s a bird or something."

Laughing heartily, Eri forgot all about the earlier discontent she had felt. Her eyes made their way over to a couple of girls who had strolled through the huge double-glassed doors of the school entrance. Detecting a familiar face on the cover of the magazine the first girl was holding in her hands, Eri exclaimed loudly.

"THAT’S HER!!"

Frantically pulling at Risa to look at the same thing she saw, Eri pointed agitatedly at the girl.

"Who, wha...where?!"

Following the direction Eri was gesturing at, Risa saw a girl who was possibly a junior. Her walking style and action of flicking her hair every few steps revealed how she in all probability, considered herself the most attractive creature that roamed the earth.

"She's okay, nothing like how awesomely drop dead gorgeous you made her out to be. I’m surprised she made it through the door with the size of her ego."

"Not her, the magazine she's holding. That's the girl I saw!"

Her line of vision dropping some distance onto the glossy cover of the magazine, Risa's eyes widened. Even from the distance, she could see the girl was a looker. Pale, exquisite and very very beautiful.

“Woah, she IS stunning.”

Scrambling out of the wooden table and bench set they were seated on, Eri reached the girls and asked immediately for the magazine. All without giving a reason or introducing herself. From afar, Risa couldn’t make out the words that were exchanged. But judging from the silly grin magazine girl had on her face and the excited chatter of her friends behind her, they obviously recognized Eri as the track captain. Barely seconds later, Eri was back at the table and desperately flipping pages to get to the article featuring raven girl.

“I’m guessing you got it for free?”

Risa asked as she watched Eri fail to pinpoint the exact page and was now looking through the content page of the fashion magazine. The resolute look in Eri’s eyes made her wonder if she even heard her. Seeing Eri exhibiting such maniacal and desperate behavior was somewhat rare and Risa marveled at the large effect raven girl had on her friend. To fall in love was a good thing but to such an extent, Risa was unsure how Eri would behave if she were to fall out of love.

“I found it!”

There was a moment of silence as Eri took in the full beauty of the girl in the magazine. Her long black hair was unchanged and she was dressed in a flowing white dress with a garner of flowers on her head. The image was so magnificent that that even Risa was left breathless by her unparalleled loveliness. And she wasn’t the type to be taken by the sheer appearance of a person.

“What did I tell you? She’s beautiful isn’t she?”

The dreamy tone of Eri voice told Risa her friend was sucked in bad. There was no way she was going to escape from the clutches of this girl.

--

The afternoon sun blazed down mercilessly on the fifteen figures running about within the large school field. It was so unbearably warm at this time of the day that no one else was training on the track or other parts of the field. The soccer team was the lone group brave enough to attempt practice with the risk of the scotching heat rays penetrating their bodies. With final rounds of an important tournament approaching, the members of one of the best soccer teams in the state were doubling up on practice to ensure a place in the top three. Sitting in the shade of the nearby spectator beeches, Kanna watched in silence at two particular figures.

“Get your act together!”

“That was a lousy pass!”

“What are you all doing?! Positions people!”

Kanna watched as the same girl barked out orders to the rest of the team. She was strict and her comments callous. Not one girl was safe from her harsh remarks. As the sun continued sweltering all beneath her, it finally took its toil on the young members. One by one, they began making more and more mistakes.

“Look out!”

Hearing the cry of warning but being too sluggish to react, Airi was within seconds struck on the head by a soccer ball flying at high speed. Realizing a runaway ball had ferociously attacked her cousin, Kanna jumped down from the bleaches where she was seated and sprinted all the way to the middle of the field.

“How can you be a member of this team if you’re so clumsy! We’re going to the finals soon and you can’t even stop a ball properly.”

The star striker of the adolescent soccer team stood tall in front of the fallen girl and continued barraging her with her unkind words. Not bothering to check if she was hurt or help her up, the strong and unfeeling captain didn’t let up her rain of discouraging comments. Bruised and miserable at being labeled a burden, Airi bit on her lip to fight back the tears that were threatening to fall.

“I think that’s enough Natsuyaki. We should check if Suzuki is hurt.”

One of the other members of the team who had at first watched in silence, decided to speak up against the captain. She knew it wasn’t her place to question Miyabi, much less her decisions. Nevertheless, she knew Airi who was still on the ground, must be feeling terrible at being surrounded by the rest of the squad and spoken to like this.

“Shut up Tsugunaga! You have NO right to speak to me like that. Remember you’re just the goalkeeper.”

Stepping out of the circle, Miyabi came up to Momoko and stared hard at her. It wasn’t all that difficult since she was considerably taller. Fingering the collar of Momoko’s jersey, Miyabi leaned in close and whispered.

“Don’t think standing up for the incompetent members will land you their support. Since you’ll be out of the team before the season ends.”

By now, Kanna had arrived by Airi’s side and was anxiously examining her younger cousin for any injuries. Satisfied that there was no serious damage other than the scrapes on her elbows, Kanna gently pulled Airi to her feet and brushed her off. Becoming aware of the stranger beside Airi, Miyabi inspected her from head to toe before giving her a distasteful look.

“And who are you? Don’t you know the field is out of bounds during soccer practice?”

An extremely tanned girl standing beside Momoko gulped at Miyabi’s voice. Should she admit to having invited Kanna to watch the team practice? While she had instructed her new lab partner to never venture onto the field at any moment, she knew it wouldn’t lessen the telling off that she would receive from the most competent player. Weighing her options, she decided to surrender herself. Miyabi could be worst than a pit bull in a pant leg when she wanted something. There was no doubt she would hunt down the person responsible for the emergence of an outsider on the training grounds. Chisato raised her hand, a habit before speaking and was about to voice her thoughts when Kanna preempted her. Now standing eye to eye with Miyabi, she gritted her teeth as a staring match ensured.

“I think you should apologize to Airi.”

Breaking into sudden hilarity, Miyabi slapped on her thigh and wrapped her arms around her stomach acting as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world.

“Is there something wrong with your brain? Why should I apologize? She should be apologizing for being inept.”

If any other person were treating Airi with such unkindness and cruelty, Kanna would have in a second lashed out at her without holding back. Yet, staring at the girl before her, Kanna couldn’t bring herself to do anything to wipe off the insufferable smirk plastered on Miyabi’s face.

You’ve changed Miyabi-chan.

--

“Open the door Ai!”

Banging hard on the thick wooden material of their daughter’s bedroom door, an anxious couple pleaded with their teenage daughter to unlock it. Intermittently glancing at the solemn looking lady standing with them, they couldn’t hide the embarrassed looks on their faces. This was the fourth instructor that their only child had offended by refusing the lessons painstakingly arranged for her.

“It appears that your daughter is not interested in the lessons Mrs. Takahashi. Why don’t you and your husband call me again when you have settled the issue? If you don’t mind, I’ll see myself out.”

Turning to leave, the haughty woman descended the stairs towards the main door, leaving the apologetic pair flabbergasted at her abrupt departure. Her voice hinted annoyance and the unmistakable look of displeasure that settled upon her hard face revealed her unwillingness to accept this assignment for a second time.

“I am terribly sorry to have you make a wasted trip Mdm Satoshi. Please allow me to see you to the door.”

Mrs Takahashi rushed to catch up with the tutor and bowed low to apologize repeatedly for her daughter’s less than good-mannered behavior. Deep down, her parents were unhappy with Ai. However they also knew they were fully to blame for the current state of affairs. If they were ever granted a chance to turn back time, they would have never indulged in the foolish actions that stripped Ai of her happiness.

Behind the door, a figure sat expressionless at the narrow ledge under the window that opened out to a busy street. This quiet area of the room was where Ai hid whenever she sought solace.
With her head lying on her knees, Ai’s eyes fixated on the redbrick building situated on the far end of the road. This structure housed a few quaint boutiques, an English café which served delicious scones and a small dancing school. A woman with a child appeared from around the corner and started climbing up the short flight of stairs leading to the entrance of the school. The young girl was dressed in a light pink leotard and had a smile on her face that could light up an entire room.

I was once like that ...

--

wordsworth: Airi has GREAT taste. Okay, so maybe I’m a little biased since I adore the girl I’m pairing her with :luvluv2:

AmberSan: Reina and Kohau fighting was purely the result of hating each other’s guts. It started with Koharu accidentally spraying water on Reina. When she demanded an apology, Koharu (who is supposed to be badass here) refused. As we know, Reina would never take this lying down. There’s definitely TakaGaki. As to whether they will end up together at the end will depend on audience reaction.

Amarghetta: Well, I could answer you right now. But then it wouldn’t keep the suspense would it? :P

Grisours: I thought the eyelash hint was a good one. Man, I didn’t know so many of the HPK had em. Lol. I guess I don’t scrutinize them enough :hehehe:

mode107: Like Risa said herself, Koharu is her sister. As to why they have different last names, it will be revealed later.

Estrea: I finally managed another chapter. About time really :hee:

stefy: I never realized there was this many fans for the less popular kids. I was contemplating only writing a couple of them in. I presume that isn’t a good plan now?

Yuuyami: The baka couple eh? I never thought of them as so. Care to elaborate a little? I could hit upon some inspiration for the story. Okay, I admit it. I was just wanna know more about TakaGaki :wahaha: It’s been to long since there was any news of them together.

rokun: Really? I get pretty strong vibes of Yurina x Maasa x Chinami or Miyabi x Captain from watching BK vids. Someone should write a threesome for kids. Oops, did I type that out?  :shy1: Airi x Captain? lol: It’s an idea. I’ll mull over it.

walking_wounded`: Hey there! Never seen you around here before. Thanks for reading and replying :kneelbow: Seems like the Maimi x Ree pairing was a good choice.

lollipopgirl: Ahhhh a TanaKamei fan. You should totally read Indigo Blue Love. That’s true blue Eri x Reina love :D More of Ai-chan was in this chapter. Some groundwork has to be laid before her interaction with Risa comes in.

meowz: Aww really? I never expected my fics to be able to induce anyone to become a regular on the forum. You don’t know how long I’ve had a smile on my face after reading this :) I really do think Koharu can have a badass face when she wants to. That is if she doesn’t go into spazzy mode XD Good luck preparing for uni. I know it can be horrid.

Yeeeeeey new chapter!  :muffin:
So Eri discovered who the raven-haired beauty is? And she is a model? I still think the girl's Michishige!
Miyabi's the captain of the soccer team? She's harsh. And apparently Kanna knew her from somewhere... Oh, and Chisato is Kanna's lab partner! I was curious about that!
At the end of the chapter there's some drama involving Ai. Her parents are forcing her to take dance/something like that classes, isn't it? That's sad.  :-\
I wanna know what happened to Maimi and Risako!
I'm loving this story, keep it up!

Woo update! :k-thrilled: and with that, a long chapter :k-thrilled: (well longer than your past ones :P)

ooo, Eri's crush is a model?    The Track Captain x Model?

hnn, I'm wondering how Kanna knows Miyabi (besides school.soccer. yeah). The 'you've changed' part obviously seems like it was something deep, not as in dating relationship, but, idk, I'll just wait to see

I  at your cute story

Chapter 7 - Secrets Revealed

Niigaki household

“Risa dear, could you please run over and pass it to Reina and her grandma?”

Mrs Niigaki’s voice was chirpy, as she called out to her daughter in the small family home. She had baked a new batch of cookies and was intending to give a jar of it to their long time neighbour.  Enveloped by an aura of comfortable kindness, the elder Niigaki reminded one of her daughter as both radiated with the same kind of sunshine and laughter.

“Yeah, sure mom. I’ll go over right now.”

Picking up the jar of delicious looking cookies, Risa cradled it in her arms like a baby and crossed the neatly trimmed lawn to the house next door. Reaching the front door, she rang the bell and waited patiently for Reina to open it. Having lived as neighbours with the young yankii for so long, she knew it took Reina at least five minutes to get the door. She was a procrastinator by nature and nothing was going to change that. Surprisingly this time, the door opened almost instantly after Risa’s finger left the buzzer and out popped a head that didn’t belong to Reina Tanaka.

“Cover girl!”

Before she knew it, the words slipped from Risa’s mouth and she stood gawking at the figure now standing in the Tanaka doorway. Her arm was raised with one finger pointing out, a stance that didn’t come across as polite.

“Excuse me?”

Visibly amused, the visitor opened the door wider and stepped out of the house into the moonlit night. As the shimmering light reflected on her pale skin, she appeared to be almost glowing.

“Oh..that girl!”

Trying desperately to conceal her original statement, Risa hastily spurted out whatever she could think of. The ending result was more confusion for the girl who had greeted her at the door.

“You must be Gaki-san. Reina said you would be coming over.”

Thankful that she didn’t persist on inquiring the meaning of her weird blabber, Risa heaved a silent sigh of relief and sneakily wiped off a sweaty brow.

“Is she in the bath? I could come back later.”

“No, it’s fine. Come on in.”

Walking down the few steps to where Risa was standing (still feeling a little foolish for her earlier outburst) the taller girl reached out to grab her wrist and pulled her into the inviting house.

Bewildered by the actions of a young woman she had only just met, Risa didn’t resist as she was dragged woodenly into the living room and made to sit on the couch. Hurrying into the kitchen, the attractive girl poured a cup of hot tea and placed it on a tray before carrying it outside. Placing it on the table in front of Risa, she motioned for her to savor it.

“This is freshly brewed. Try it, and tell me if it’s good.”

Being treated as a real guest for the first time in all her years of calling at the Tanaka household made Risa feel both thrilled and bizarre at the same time. An actual visitor was the one creating this sense of feeling no less.

Taking a small sip while being careful not to burn herself with the steaming liquid, Risa was pleasantly surprised to taste that it was delectable. The tea was smooth without being too sweet.

“This tastes delicious! Urh, I mean it’s really good.”

Realizing that the term delicious wasn’t that suitable for describing the taste of tea, Risa blushed unconsciously at her lack of vocabulary and hence choice of words.

“Thank you!”

Smiling sweetly, the guest of the Tanaka family moved to sit down beside Risa on the relatively small couch. Turning to face her, she asked in a small voice.

“Gaki-san? Can I call you that?”

Being in such close proximity with the famous cover girl and with the help of the room's adept lighting, Risa for a moment couldn’t believe it was actually happening. The girl Eri had been searching in vain for so long had been living right next door all along.

Kame is going to flip out when I tell her this.

“Gaki-san!”

Jolted out of her reverie, Risa’s mind returned to reality and her eyes focused on the figure still snuggled closely next to her.

“Sorry, I was spacing out for a moment.”

A soft laughter escaped her lips as she covered her mouth with one small hand to hide her smile.

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

Shifting in her seat, she removed every inch of space between them and leaned in close to Risa’s face.

“I haven’t introduced myself. I’m Sayumi Michishige. And you’ll be seeing a lot of me in future.”

-----

Flinging open the swing door to the locker room with a strong push, Miyabi stormed inside and sat down heavily on one of the wooden benches. Still fuming from the run in with the other members of her team, she had adamantly left the field in rage. Curling her fist into a ball, she slammed it into the bench repeatedly,  not caring where it landed. She was mad, very mad.

The all-important state championships were almost upon them yet most of the members weren’t up to standard. And a few, like Suzuki Airi, were more suited for a friendly match than a real competition. Seeing such a lack of ability and talent made Miyabi feel resentful that they were allowed on the team and hence ran the risk of  dragging it down. However, the ever affable coach Yoshizawa believed in equal treatment towards all who had a passion for the sport regardless of aptitude. If she had her way, Miyabi would kick out more than half of the squad. While unskilled players exasperated her, better ones like Tsugunaga Momoko aggravated her too. For some reason, the two never got off to a great start, and this resulted in them never being able to get along properly. Something about the older girl bugged her and Miyabi couldn’t quite place a finger on what it was.

Frustrated, she took it out on the nearest inanimate object, a cart filled with soccer balls. The resulting clang when metal met boot resonated off the walls and was only broken when a feminine voice interrupted.

“Touchy aren’t we.”

Recognizing the voice almost instantaneously, Miyabi turned to face the intruder with a bored look.

“What do you want Risako?”

“Couldn’t you have at least said hi? I’m hurt.”

Laughing out at what she apparently thought was a joke, Miyabi completely missed the fallen expression on Risako’s face. However, the miserable expression didn’t linger for too long and the next second saw it replaced with a smile.

“Why are you here.”

Asking the question still with a cold tone, Miyabi opened her locker and started putting items into her duffel bag.

“We have to talk.”

Closing the door behind her, Risako press the locking mechanism of the doorknob after letting her finger hover above it for some time. Miyabi quirked an eyebrow at the act but nevertheless didn’t pause to question her actions.

Dressed in her cheerleader outfit comprising of short skit, tight top, wristband and braided hair, Risako was always confident and strolled around campus certain that she would get her way with both the teaching and student population. Though this time she appeared less than secure about herself. It was as if she was afraid of the outcome of this session. Not wanting to prolong her agony by making redundant small talk, Risako delved right in.

“I wanted to know, if it was possible between us.”

“NO!”

Miyabi’s reply was sharp, and her one word answer reverberated within the enclosed room. Her eyes were hard as she clenched her jaw.

“What we had, it was in the past. We can never go back. I don’t want to go back.”

“Why Miya? Give us a chance. Give me a chance. If it was something I did, I can cha..”

“Listen to yourself! It’s degrading. Aren’t you with Yajima now.”

The cutting remarks of Miyabi didn’t come as a surprise to Risako. The young captain was infamous within the school for her reputation of being snobbish and having a high and mighty attitude. Excelling in both sports and academics, it was every student’s dream to be associated in some way to the rich and only child of one of the country’s richest family. Risako didn’t think she would be one of those who fell under Miyabi’s spell. She too was one of the members of the younger student population who in her own right, had most of the student population running after her. There was no one who didn’t know who Risako Sugaya was.

Except that she was attracted or you could say infatuated by the futsal striker who exhibited an air of flippancy and can’t-be-bothered attitude, which only added to her allure of appeal. That and the coincidence of having the same math class further sealed the impression of Miyabi as a pretty, athletic math genius.

“I never liked Maimi. I was only trying to get you to notice me again. Please take me back Miya. I can’t live without you.”

Running to hug Miyabi tightly from behind, Risako wept tears of shame. She despised herself for stooping so low, and even more for so for making use of Maimi, the undoubtedly innocent party. Nevertheless she had to get Miyabi back no matter what to took. Even if it was purely one sided on her part, she didn’t mind as long as she could stay by her side. The enigma of Miyabi Natsuyaki was too overwhelming for her.

-----

Separated by the thin wall, the conversation couldn’t be masked despite a locked door. Thoroughly flabbergasted at what she had overheard. Kanna regretted ignoring Airi’s pleads to let the matter rest. If she hadn’t stubbornly insisted on going after Miyabi to extract an apology on behalf of her younger cousin, she wouldn’t be caught in the current state of affairs. Blame her personality for constantly wanting to stand up for a family member and the hidden agenda of proving to herself that Miyabi wasn’t as unfeeling as she portrayed herself to be. Never in her wildest thoughts had Kanna expected to listen in on such a shocking revelation. Not only would she have to break it to Miami, it would be an uphill task trying to get her best friend to believe any word of it.

-----

The shadows of two futsal players floated down the pavement with the five o’clock sun shining down upon them. Walking side by side in silence, Airi stole quick glances at her teammate accompanying her home. With Kanna running off claiming an emergency and Chisato having an errand to run, the remaining member of the trio who wasn’t busy was laden with the task of sending Airi home. When the unplanned situation arose, Airi wanted to clap her hands and shout with glee. Somehow she managed to find it within herself to contain her joy until she could celebrate alone. She was feeling light headed and was unsure if it were the after effects caused by the runaway ball or the giddy elation of having Momoko stand up for her against the star striker cum captain. Now the quiet pint sized girl was even carrying her bag, an action she insisted on doing in case Airi was still feeling unwell.

Yes, Momoko Tsugunaga was her secret crush. She was the one she watched in History class and the reason she ventured so frequently to the goal post area during practice. It highly unlikely for Momoko to wind up as anyone’s object of affections with the low profile she kept. Never one to hang out with the ‘it’ crowd or boast of her abilities as the school’s best goalkeeper, she as a matter of fact, hardly spoke outside of class. Her lone friend was fellow futsal player Chisato Okai and she was usually just seen with her. On the other hand, it was precisely this quiet character that drew Airi’s attention. She never did like the loud and rowdy types. It was the silent yet competent types that attracted her so.

“Is this it?”

Looking up into Momoko’s quizzical face, it dawned on Airi that they had reached her house. The walk home from school felt shorter than usual and disappointment rose in Airi when they had to part so quickly. This was the first time she had the opportunity to spend some time alone with Momoko. Now standing outside the gate, the next logical step was to thank Momoko for seeing her home and carry her own bag inside. Still, Airi felt the need to do more. Peharps her head injury had unearthed the deep desire to get to know Momoko better. The sudden explosion of courage that swelled up within Airi made her feel like she could accomplish anything. Instead of waiting some more for something to happen, she decided to take matters into her own hands and make known the feelings she had kept hidden for so long.

Bending near to take the bag from Momoko, Airi deliberately caught the older girl’s hand in her own and gave it a small squeeze. Making a decision to take it a step further, she gave the astonished girl a quick peck on the cheek before running into the house and shutting the door with a bang. Left alone outside, Momoko stood dazed with one hand touching the spot where Airi had kissed. Her other hand lay hanging by her side, still feeling the lingering effects of Airi’s hand on her own.

The whole background of the Miya/Risako part was well written. Very descriptive..I like that  :mon thumb:  So Kanna is going to break the news to Maimi?  I can only imagine the situation having to go like [bgcolor=#000000]Kanna telling her what she heard, and Maimi just won't believe it because she thinks that Kanna is jealous, and so on [/bgcolor]  :P  But y'know, you never know
Woot, Sayu makes an appearance again. I can't wait til her and Eri meet again.

And I just realised my guess about Airi's classmate was indeed Momo.  This is the first time I've gotten a guess in a fanfic correct :P
