Title: Girl gets chinese tattoo of bf's name, but reads as 'supermarket'
Post by: Tuffty on December 13, 2007, 11:36:54 AM
A TEENAGE girl who had her lover's nickname tattooed onto her stomach found out months after they split up that it actually said "supermarket".

Joanne Raine discovered the mistake after she walked into a Chinese takeaway to find out what the tattoo symbols really meant. (http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/search/display.var.1897982.0.mistake_is_tattoo_much_to_stomach.php)

Well it's people like this that really bring this upon themselves. With no regard to any kind of language gap between English and Chinese, she's now stuck with that marking forever.

why the hell she doesn't even try to do at least some research before doing that tattoo  LOL   but now it's too late ~ LOL ~

ps: that word DOESN'T means supermarket or store or shop .... it's a name for a supermarket or store or shop .

The rough translation for the first 2 characters - "Alliance" or "United".......  and the third character can be translated as "store".

so she DID have a name tattooed at her stomach

This girl is not alone..
My wife and I were relaxing (drinking) in a park one day in Melbourne, and I saw a girl sitting close by with "" tattooed on her arm.. Asked the wife if that said "uma", and it did, so then asked the girl why she had "horse" tattooed on her arm..
Girl's face =  :O

Not sure if you guys heard, but here in the UK again, a man recently found out that a Chinese tattoo of his name which he had for 26 years, reads as Coca-Cola instead

Miss Raine said: "They had Chinese symbols on the wall. So I picked capital r, capital o and small o, so they were all different."

The Chinese language doesn't work like that does it?  I thought they didn't have a phonetic alphabet.

yep, it doesn't work that way ~

but if you ignore the meaning of the characters, I think it kinda works

you can get the phonetic "translations" from the characters but with weird meanings LOL

It looks cool? I've thought it's kinda lame. As an aside, Asian people also look lame when they get something tatooed in Russian.

^ I'm not speaking for everybody that has a Chinese tattoo, but from the cases I've read about, it's more a case that they think it's spiritual and it means something. But it doesn't help if you don't know what the symbol for your name or Chinese zodiac is and end up getting something that says 'Spicy Tuna Roll' instead XD

Ignorance is truly bliss. Who the hell would think that roman alphabets translates directly to Chinese or Japanese? Morons, thats who.

I see someone with something stupid like "sakana" tattooed on themselves just about once every other day.
