Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li.

^ I'd rather go home if it's all the same to you

The campiness was the best thing (okay, the only good thing) about that movie.  Following tradition, the new one should be corny AND have ridiculous special effects, so it's double-win.
Title: Re: Street Fighter Movie starts filming 2008 in thailand
Post by: aKaoNi on December 27, 2007, 05:12:52 AM
^ I dunno, original movie was overly-corny and I get called corn-flakes myself with the jokes I tell at work so eh.... And I love Kreuk and all but yeah I'm kinda skeptical with her pulling a Chun-Li off, I hope it's at least on one of the X-Men films caliber, special effects in the original were horrible.

so, according to maxim

Kristen Kreuk - Chun Li
Michael Clarke Duncan - Balrog
Neal McDonough - M. Bison
Taboo  - Vega (haha, thats pretty cool)
Chris Klein - Charlie/Nash

Looks like they've got a nice budget to spend for this movie =)

The blog for upcoming film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li is back on its feet after being knocked over by too much Internet attention yesterday.

Apparently Kristin Kreuk and Josie Ho (as Cantana) have been getting a little "too close for comfort" as well, in a "scene that's sure to capture the, um, affections of all you male fans". (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=131466)

Kristen in potential female action? Hmmm. Maybe I'll watch it after all. with the sound down, naturally :P

The blog: http://streetfightermovie.net/?m=200804

Street Fighter movie writer Justin Marks has said he picked Chun-Li as the focus because films are about unexpected heroes, and not so he could have a "blatantly sexualised female lead". (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=137992)

Funny how he then goes onto say:

Quote
"That said, did I mention Kristin is gorgeous? And there's one very steamy night club scene where she does awesome things to get the information she needs."

Kristen is hot, but I still think there are better suited full blood Chinese actresses with the looks and skills to portray Chun-Li. That's the only way you're going to please the diehards. With Kristen all I'll see is a pretty girl flailing her arms and legs about.

And it seems that Ryu or Ken won't make an appearance.

It's confirmed. Ryu and Ken won't be in the upcoming movie:

Quote
Patrick Aiello, the producer on Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, has confirmed that Ken and Ryu won’t be in the film. This, brothers and sisters, is a heavy blow.

“There are just way too many characters in the Street Fighter universe to cram them all into one film,” he said. “We want to do each one the justice he/she deserves. So, in short, Ken and Ryu will not be appearing in this film. But, that doesn’t mean we wont see our red and white-clad heroes in potential sequels…”

Too many characters, so the most iconic ones are scrapped  And I like how he thinks there will be potential sequels. This announcement alone will turn away fans from the screens already!

I wonder if they will show Chun Li's signature move Hyakuretsukyaku (i.e the move that she rapidly kicks the opponent) and the upside down Tatsumaki-Senpū kyaku (i.e. that spinning kick move)

looks like an action movie but they incorporated street fighter into it, instead of writing around the sf theme itself =P   I like it so far, i'd watch it.  Taboo as Vega looks pretty cool.

haha, Tatsumaki-Senpū kyaku, i know it as speening baard keek!

lol, my friend's all "why is Chun Li white??"

hehe, all i see are comments saying "Chun Li isn't chinese! Fail!".  I guess people can't see that she's half asian (chinese).

Agreed with all, the poster looks crap! I mean the movie is about Chun Li right? why the shadow background is not Chun Li?

There are a lot of people who play roles of characters of different ethnicities and nationalities. Their actors playing roles in movies.

Quote from: Ken Watanabe
Talent is more important than nationality.

I agree that "talent is more important than nationality", but it still kind of helps if they.. you know, stick to original nationality/ethnicity as much as they can, you know?

It's not like there are zero Chinese girls out there that would be good for this role.
Title: Re: Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009)

But she's half chinese, so I see nothing wrong with kruek playing chun-li. They never said chun-li was full chinese in the first place.

The bigger problem is the movie itself.

Street Fighter’ packs a limp punch

By Alonso Duralde
Film critic

There’s an understanding when we go into a movie like “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” that the audience is willing to sacrifice certain standards of plot, dialogue and performance in exchange for a visceral experience of breathtaking fight scenes along with a reasonable degree of visual acuity.

You’ll get none of that here. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29431430/)

^ welp there goes my expectations down the drain. next on the list: dragon ball! yay for westernized mediocrity! why do they even try? or are they trying to market to people under 13 years old? i bet i wouldve enjoyed this movie as a 10 year old, heck i kinda did with mario brothers and the original street fighter, lol.

^ Pretty much aimed at male tweens yeh, as is any game-to-movie adaptation. Fighting games are an odd genre to translate into movies for. They're not exactly renowned for their narratives are they? I only hope the Bioshock adaptation doesn't go the same route.

But then we all knew this wouldn't make a good movie anyway. I hope it means no more western SF movies. I mean, you'd probably get Tom Welling (Clark Kent in Smallville) being cast as Ryu.

Brutal comments from Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/street_fighter_the_legend_of_chun_li/):

"The good news is that I only need 9 more movies for my 10 Worst List."

"I can't remember the last time I watched an actor fail to walk into a room convincingly, but Chris Klein does it. Look for a YouTube montage of his Street Fighter performance to pop up any day now."

"When Chris Klein yells "Bomb! Everybody Out!", he just as well could have been talking about this movie too."

"Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is indeed terrible, but in kind of an awesome way."

"I much prefer the flamboyant badness of the '94 flick to the attractive, even-keeled mediocrity of this one. Jean-Claude Van Damme's stock just rose considerably."

"Chun-Li narrates much of it, and the dialogue would be excruciating if it weren't laughable in the way she describes what is blatantly occurring on the screen. If nothing else, the movie is an ideal one for blind viewers."

"As a fan of the video game series, I can honestly say that this is hands down one of the worst films I have ever seen. Chris Klein is so bad that he made the movie a comedy."

"It's bad. It's really bad. It's Uwe Boll bad."

OUCH! XD
