Title: The Official Playstation Portable (PSP/Vita) Thread
Post by: herachan on January 31, 2008, 02:54:23 AM
i noticed there is no psp thread yet. so here it is.

ive got a few questions myself because im not really up to date with the gaming world anymore but 4 days ago i just a new psp slim and lite blume series (lavander) and the manual comes in Japanese. i can read characters but i cant understand them . lol

my first question is , does MP3 work in psp or is there other format?

2ndly, i got a wireless router (Prolink Wireless G ADSL2+ Modem/Router) at home, and it has WLAN display blinking so i thought maybe i can access internet using that connection or if not how do i make it work?

hmm thats it for now
currently i am downloading iso of tekken DR...

I think there's an homebrew that allows to directly watch youtube vids... can't remember the name of it, though.  :?

EDIT: I think it was called "PSPTube".

Your main homebrew source:  http://pspupdates.qj.net/

Just remember, read the readme file. There are also different homebrew for psp phat and the newer psp slim. Check out the compatibility and requirements.

I put most of the blame on the parents for not knowing what they bought(PSP) can do. Should've bought a DS instead

Maybe you have to unrar the files first

is that a game?

I'm not familiar with psp homebrews but I don't think it'll be able to read archived games.

Yeah, the brave story pic is multiparts of brave story iso. Like what SITS said, extract it and you'll get one iso@cso file that go into the iso folder. I have no idea about how to use that first pic though.

Iso/CSO format games goes into ISO folder

Homebrew games like snes, n64. atari, etc etc goes into GAME150 Folder

PS1 games go to GAME folder

a PSP is not a "video game"

it's not really that surprising I think, that thing gets really hot when using it. Combining that with the warmth within his pocket could possibly cause it to explode. But I also think there might have been a QC problem at Sony, cause I don't think they would design and commercially release something that would catch your pants on fire.

But why was it turned on in his pocket?

Hey, I saw that on engadget last week.

really? it was featured on a show? cool!

alot of psp related forum-members say it cant be done with official firmware. But the fact that when my the psp slim formats the mem. card and it made folders like PSP>GAME --->(a folder for ps1 games as they say). I couldnt help but think, that ps1 EBOOTS.PBP are intendedly playable on it.

hmmm do you have a link to that show that you were saying, i wanna see it.  :)

You need a custom firmware to run ISOs.

To install a custom firmware, you will need to downgrade your psp (back to firmware 1.5) before installing your CF.
Lately, the most common way to downgrade a PSP is by using the "Pandora Battery" trick.

generally new PSP's need the pandora battery due to the firmware. Older ones can like happo says be downgraded and/or upgraded to the latest custom firmware and play illegal and legal homebrew on it without acquiring anything. but remember, PIRATING IS A CRIME PEOPLE!

No need to run two psp's anymore since the custom firmwares are up do date with the official ones. It was worse before when the 1.5 mods and stuff didn't have the same functions as the latest official releases. Thank god for custom firmware and no more emulators + fastloaders and whatnot.

PSP firmware 3.95 hits the tubes
(http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/4-8-08-psp395.jpg)

The last round of PSP firmware updates brought Skype support, but it looks like 3.95 isn't nearly as exciting: Sony's added in reconfigurable button mapping to PS1 emulation, and made it so that you can choose to either shut down your PS3 or leave it running when you're done with a remote play session. That's about it, but we know you're all compulsively checking for the update now anyway.

Are the Pokemon games available on PSP also? (Or are there Pokemon games for PSP, period)

Also, is there like a 'skin' I can buy to turn my future PSP pink? Because I might have no choice but to get a black one, and I'm hoping to just make it pink on my own when I get it.

If you want a pink PSP, there is a PSP Japanese version that comes in pink

In terms of Pokemon because the franchise is owned by Nintendo,  I don't think they will ever released any games in other consoles besides Nintendo consoles.

The risk of bricking while running homebrew is there, just be careful and read the installation guide properly. Most of the time installation just involving copy and paste to the correct folder, but well people like to skip reading the readme duh. I have like 10 homebrews in my psp. Just makesure your firmware support homebrew, like custom firmware M33.

Also, I heard in the Japanese PSP you can't play movies, but in the US one you can. Is that true? And can you only play US games in the US made one, and does the Japanese one play all?

I heard in the Japanese PSP you can't play movies, but in the US one you can. Is that true?
Official movies in UMD format are region protected (just like DVD's). So you can't play a Japanese UMD movie on a US PSP (we're talking about official firmwares here. You can change that from the menu of most custom firmwares).
But of course, you can play MP4 ripped movies copied on the memory card on any PSP, whatever it's a US, Japanese or European one.

And can you only play US games in the US made one, and does the Japanese one play all?
Games are NOT region protected. You can play any game in any PSP.

Title: Re: The official Playstation Portable (PSP) Thread

Quote

MP4

note: this refers to MP4 files as required by the player in the VSH

* Video Limitation Resolution: 320 x 240 (QVGA), Nonstandard resolutions can be used but are still limited to the 76,800 pixel resolution of QVGA. Codec: MPEG-4 SP (Simple Profile), which has different headers than the more common MPEG-4 formats.
* Audio Limitation Codec: AAC Sampling Rate: 24000hz Bitrate Limitation: 1-768kb/s & 1500kb/s. Any combination of video and audio bitrate that is equal to or less than 768kb/s is acceptable (i.e. 640kb/s video + 128kb/s audio = 768kb/s total, or 300kb/s video + 32kb/s audio = 332kb/s total). The PSP also supports a bitrate of 1500kb/s, but no bitrates inbetween 768kb/s and 1500kb/s.

Cut and paste from somewhere. And this is the tool that I use to transcode avi vids to mp4

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/3GP_Converter

Hope it helps.

^ no problem ^_^

About the radio, you also can get a homebrew radio player,  freeradio (http://pspupdates.qj.net/FreeRadio-v1-8-coding-improvements-FreeRadio-skin-set-to-default/pg/49/aid/117673) which can play most of the shoutcast radio or any other compatible stream from internet.

Features:

    * Shoutcast playback
    * Streaming MP3/AAC playback
    * Podcast browsing/playback
    * Remote playlist streaming
    * Web browsing
    * Links to both official Sony radio players
    * Customizable lists of Shoutcast stations, podcasts, and raw audio streams

Just install and insert your favourite stream into the configuration. I listen to jphip radio sometime using it.

Software mods or hardware mods?

Thumbstick...depending on how severe the stickiness is, you can open up the case and replace it with a new one.

better make sure you get an older model version if you want to hack it. The newest ones and the last models of the flat version have new motherboards that aren't hackable in any currently know way.

^ go for em PSP-2000's/Slim and Lite. They have the same dimensions as the new PSP-3000 except they're hackable  :)

Best if you would ask the store what type of PSP they're selling. I'm not sure if you can determine the type with just the stickers on the box.

Well that's not completely true. I think the very late models of the slim also had the "unhackable" mobos.

Here's a little thing I found.
http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?p=47672

So if you have a G or later letter on your boxcode for the psp, you probably won't be able to hack it.

There's a link to a pic in that link above that shows where the letter should be.

I just put this really nice Legend of Zelda Theme on my PSP Slim.

 (http://www.imgur.com/files/090130/Th.screen1.jpg) (http://www.imgur.com/i.php?i=090130/screen1.jpg)
I actually used the wall paper of this theme. The whole theme wasn't great itself. The sub catergory icons under the main icons were the original PSP ones, so I had to ditch that.

 (http://www.imgur.com/files/090130/Th.Zelda-20Wind-20Waker.gif) (http://www.imgur.com/i.php?i=090130/Zelda-20Wind-20Waker.gif)
This was a great theme, but I'm only using the icons of this theme. The person did a fantastic job with the sub catergory and main icons. There was even an icon for the TV catergory (I have a JPN PSP) that the first theme didn't have. I was going back and forth for minutes deciding if I should go with this complete theme or use the wall paper of the first theme with the icons of this one.

If anyone is interested in these:

Twilight Princess Theme:
http://psp3d.com/media/13465-complete-zelda-theme.html   <---- Not compatible with Slim (unless you hack, I guess) but you can still get the wall paper for it
http://www.themespot.net/templates.php?id=784   <------ The Icons

Wind Waker Theme
http://www.themespot.net/templates.php?id=1238

And the website which holds a lot of great themes:  http://www.themespot.net/

I think the Prinny game is pretty fun. Yea, the controls are akin to ghosts and goblins where once you jump, you can't move in midair. Expect a lot of deaths...but that's what the 1000 lives are for.

Also playing Phantasy Star Portable. Basically PSU with a new story.

I played it! It is a great game! You can unlock 53 of costumes for Miku and other characters too! (NOTE: The first costume is the DEFAULT one, that Miku wears from the beginning! But you must unlock the other 52 ones...)
The songs are great too! =) You can see HERE (http://projectdiva.wikispaces.com/List+of+Songs) the complete List of the songs from the game... The songs from the White tag are the hardest ones... the Normal mode has ALREADY 5 stars! (The highest and Hard mode for normal levels) I don't know how much stars the Hard Mode has, because I couldn't unlock the Hard mode yet! ><

I took it from Canadian PSN, then transfer it from my PS3 to my memory stick...

Maybe it's a problem of space on your MS or simply (but shitty) a problem of account ?

I really they do bring PSP2 out. Six years is enough for the original PSP and some of the specs have now gotten old especially the CPU and RAM compared to modern handheld gadgets. Engadget reported a patent by Sony over a possible phone-PSP hybrid. In that case if they can pull off a truly pocket sized PSP2 with phone capabilities, this'd sell like anything. In my opinion, PSP is really the real choice for those hardcore games. You can't imagine playing God of War or Pro Evo soccer on a Nintendo DS or a touch-enabled smartphone with the same ease and versatility that can be afforded by a PSP.

Bring it on SONY! I am waiting! :thumbsup I don't mind if they include a touchscreen but it's gotta be the same old controls, and TWO analogues please! Just very critically important for first person shooter games.

PSP2 Announced - Next Generation Portable

(http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/4089/ngpspecs.jpg) (http://img593.imageshack.us/i/ngpspecs.jpg/)

Quote
Sony Computer Entertainment kingpin Kaz Hirai has unveiled the company's next generation portable device at a conference in Tokyo today – and it's currently codenamed NGP.

That stands for Next Generation Portable, helpfully, and Hirai promised it would include a revolutionary control system, location-based entertainment, social features and augmented reality features.

NGP is due out this "holiday season", Hirai announced.

NGP includes a five-inch OLED display, dual analogue sticks, d-pad and face buttons, front and rear touch pads, 3G and Wi-Fi integration, Sixaxis motion control and a three-axis electronic compass. There are even front and rear cameras "suitable for gameplay".

The thumb sticks are described as "micro analogue sticks", which are raised ala DualShock, rather than PSP-style nubs. There are also shoulder buttons, start/select and a PS button evident in the units shown in Tokyo.

The rear touch panel is exactly the same size as the five-inch screen, so your finger's location will be replicated exactly on the screen. Using the front and rear panels in concert, it's possible to "pinch", which has useful gameplay applications.

Sony said the screen resolution would be four times that of the original PlayStation Portable, which displayed images at 480x272, for the record. It promises a wide viewing angle "perfect for users who like to lie down while playing games".
'PSP2 unveiled: Next Generation Portable' Screenshot 1

Sony's NGP.

Presumably NGP will do a lot of business with PlayStation Store, but it does use what's called a "new game medium", what Sony calls a small flash memory based card dedicated for NGP software titles.

"Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store the full software titles plus add-on game content or the game save data directly on to the card," Sony revealed. "By adopting flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games."

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said that the advantages of NGP were PlayStation 3-quality visuals, a high-quality screen, dual analogue sticks and a combination of traditional control with motion and touch panels.

NGP will also include compatibility with PlayStation Suite – an Android-based store for PlayStation content announced earlier.

Hirai said that while Sony was looking to offer cross-platform experiences – hence the collusion with Android – NGP was a necessary component of the format holder's drive to offer "a captivating ultimate portable gaming experience".

Payed only 150 euro's for it because of some special going on (had no idea, but hey 20 euro less to pay  :) )

Now I need to find a way to get WPA2 working... it does communicate WPA to the PS3, but I have my AP on WPA2-AES(/TKIP)

I've been thinking of getting PS Vita for few days now, really tempting  :ph43r: First I thought of PSP cos of all those FF and Kingdom Hearts games, but Vita just looks more awesome and I bet there are and will be great games released on it. Also, u can download PSP games on ur Vita, right? So I could get those FF and KH anyway? (even tho I love to have the real game box in my hands, not just a file in memory card, but oh well XD )

The cheapest new Vita with Wi-fi I found online is €199, I guess that's around the price u get it as new?

€199 seems about right for a new one. They do have a back catalog of not only PSP games, but PS1 games as well, so you can even have FFVI through to FFIX to download to your mem stick. The lack of Vita games though is...concerning At the minute, Gravity Rush seems to be the only worthy game for it and Persona 4 Golden is the only one I know of that's coming out in the future. If it wasn't for the fact that the Vita has a huge back catalogue of PSP and PS1 games I'd say it would be in more trouble than it is (the original PSP is still outselling it in Japan)

Just double check that the PSP games you want are available on the PS store. Some are, like Dissidia Duodecim, but I checked there and found that FFVII:Crisis Core and KH:Birth By Sleep aren't on the PS store, which means you wouldn't be able to play them on the Vita.

A Vita would be cool, it looks like a sexy piece of hardware, but I dunno, a PSP might work out cheaper and you can still play all those games and have games in the PS store to play on. It's an awesome machine for JRPG's, and honestly, some of Square's best games this generation have been out on it (Dissidia Duodecim, Tactics Ogre, Birth By Sleep).

^ Ohh! Thank you! It didn't even came to my mind that the games might not be available in the store ;A; Pheww~ Hmmm.. maybe I'll go for PSP instead. It's true it's cheaper and there are more games on it and I think the older games ain't too expensive either. I need to do some more researching!  :D

Yeah, it's a toss-up in someways, but I'd lean towards the Vita.

The Vita is very nice. The screen is about twice the size and much brighter and sharper, and it has a number of great games (Gravity Rush, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Disgaea 3). The PSP library is mostly complete - but there are a couple notable exceptions (Sony promises to get them soon...). Battery life is pretty decent, and it does most things a tablet does (touchscreen, Facebook, Youtube, web browser, video, music). I never use the camera, but it's there.

It is considerably heavier than the original PSP though.

The original PSP is cheaper, runs old disc games (as long as its not a Go), is a lot lighter and has a smaller footprint so it's easier to fit in a bag or backpack.

The biggest difference for me is the control. The PSVita's analog stick is much better than the PSP's - it's not stiff, much more comfortable and seems more precise. My hand got sore playing something like God of War on the PSP - that's not really as much of a problem on the Vita.

Well, I just went for the PSP 3000 model  :D There are lotsa games that should keep me busy for a long time. And maybe after like two years I'll get the Vita when it's gotten cheaper and have more games too 8D

I like RPG, I'd love to play PSP RPG games.
Does anyone has recommendations for 10 best RPG in PSP?

Not sure about 10 (my PSP library isn't that huge), but there's a few good ones.

PSP has a lot of good tactical RPGs - FF Tactics, Disgaea games, Jeanne d'Arc. It's like its own sub-genre,

Crisis Core is still awesome. I really liked Ys VII as well.

FF & Disgaea are widely known as award winning games.
So I think everybody agree with you on that.
What is Jeanne d'Arc? I've never heard of it. Is is good?

Yeah, it's a turn-based tactical RPG set in a very, very loose interpretation of the story of Joan of Arc. The strategy and combat are pretty interesting, and there's good variety in upgrades. It might be a bit easy if you're used to Fire Emblem.

Sony retires the decade-old PSP in Japan to make way for the Vita
BY Daniel Cooper | June 3rd 2014

It had a good run, but Sony has decided to bring the curtain down on the PlayStation Portable. The company has announced that June's shipment of the hardware will be the last in Japan, and local users looking to upgrade to the PS Vita can earn a $30 or $40 trade-in discount across the summer. The Verge is reporting that the handheld was quietly discontinued in North America back in January, and we'd assume that European sales of the ten-tear-old device will be next to face the chop. It looks as if Sony is now doing its best to push buyers toward the newly-resurgent PS Vita, which has ridden a wave of success kickstarted by indie titles like Hotline Miami.

Kinda crazy to think that the PSP is actually 10 years old. I still remember the first time I saw a student proudly bring one to school and all the attention that he got from the other kids for it.
