Title: Athletes face Olympic ban for criticising China

British athletes will be banned from competing in this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing if they criticise China's totalitarian regime.

The gagging order has been imposed by the British Olympic Association. Competitors who break the rule will not travel to the games or, if they are already in China, will be put on the next plane home. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/02/10/nolympics110.xml)

That is just absolutely ridiculous. Okay, gagging in China may be okay (since it's against the law to speak out against the Chinese government in China, I think).But gagging them BEFORE the Olympics, that's just ridiculous.

why would they do an olympic in china anyways...i smell corruption in the VANOC voters

It's probably just their attempt at trying to avoid having to deal with the athelete's accidentally saying anything bad that could damage political relations between Britain and China.
