New single 「置き手紙」 (Romaji: Okitegami, English: Written Message).
updated: Dual release: two singles of the same song, one by Horiuchi Takao (http://www.takao-horiuchi.com/) and one by Fujimoto Miki. Release date is 23 April.

Miki Fujimoto is back in action with a new solo single, her first in five years. The singer left Morning Musume last June after it was learned that she was dating comedian Tomoharu Shoji.
Her new song, titled "Okitegami," marks a shift away from her pop idol image. It falls under the kayokyoku genre, with composition by Masato Sugimoto (known for his recent hit "Waremokou"), lyrics by Haku Ide (who wrote Masao Sen's "Kitaguni no Haru"), and arrangement by Yu Hejun (who composed the theme song for the Korean drama "Winter Sonata").
The project started with singer Takao Horiuchi, also attached to Up-Front Agency. This past autumn, Ide wrote the song's lyrics and passed it on to Sugimoto. After creating the melody, Sugimoto thought it would be interesting to have Horiuchi sing it in chanson style, and Horiuchi accepted the offer.
At the same time, Up-Front staff were looking for a song that would be suitable for Fujimoto's comeback. They happened to hear the demo tape for "Okitegami," and they recommended the song to Fujimoto. As a result, the two singers are releasing different versions simultaneously on April 23.

A lot of older people in Japan have cassette players and still prefer them over CDs. Unlike N.America, the demand for them is obviously still high there, so the industry is giving the people what they want.

Think of it this way. If releasing this single on both CD and cassette will get Miki's voice out there to the old people, and if her singing touches their hearts...that would be pretty awesome.
The younger Mikiwotas, on the other hand, will probably not bother with the cassette. :P

For this sort of thing, I pretty much would expect a cassette version.
Believe it or not, it's not just the 65+ age group that has cassette players.. quite a lot of middle aged peeps still got em too and it's not odd at all to see a cassette release for folk/traditional releases. Most of my friends' parents or my own (older) family members still use em too.. also for children. No, they're not still walkin around with a boombox rofl- they also have the standard CD players, etc but the cassette is still chugin along for different purposes.
Vinyl records are still VERY popular but it's almost a totally different demographic.
To try to make more sense out of it instead of my verbal diarrhea, just as an example.. I still use vinyls, cassettes, cds AND of course, my iPod. But it's like.. I could never listen to let's say, Morning Musume on vinyl (even though I own it) because it feels utterly misplaced. Yet at the same time, I could also never listen to Ramsey Lewis or Mieko Hirota (60s singer) on CD for the exact same reason. I personally know a lot of older folks also apply this same sensibility. My grandparents were a perfect example of this before they died. They had a CD player like everyone else.. plus the standard cassette player and record player. Again, they would almost exclusively listen to different things on each respective player. If there was a release for like, traditional music on cassette, they'd grab the cassette. They'd even go as far to buy like a cheap cassette bootleg version if they could or even had me buy a CD and record it onto cassette for them. This isn't something rare at all. ><

Okitegami is nothing special, it's even boring, BUT IT'S BEAUTIFUL. I can't wait to hear the full song and see how does it perform on charts. Very few, very very few enka songs have success on Oricon. You have to be either consecrated, featured in Kohauku, or the first black enka singer ever. Having ruled out these options, what is left for Miki is her loyal fanbase anxiety, that I see capable of buying Okitegami even if it was a monologue.
Why? Because Miki pwns in bed, in music, and in everything she does in this life.

Me too. She sounds WONDERFUL in this. Not to mention she looks stunning.
The video was a little boring, though... but what can you do? I hope her career takes off, but I also hope she gets to do a variety of music as opposed to just sticking with enka-esque.

Guess she did absolutely no voice training in her off time. This type of song pretty much relies on strong vocals to carry it, and she was sorta lacking.

Anyone check the website? Apparently Miki's doing some PR for her "comeback" by doing shows at totally small, random places like record stores and electronics expos....(I saw a train ad for some kind of home appliance expo, and she was performing at it)
you can get in by lining up, and buying a copy of the single, and some of them have handshake events too.
I'm going to try and go to the one in Nihonbashi on Tuesday.

Yup. The girl next to her is her manager. In Mikitty's words: "This is my manager, who gained four kg this year and is the same age as me."

I went to the event today! The live didn't have enough Miki, she sang the c/w and then the single, and then Horiguchi got to sing 4 songs, and he kind of stole the show, he was really funny and great, walking around the stage. I was near the back, even so the stage was a long rectangle so if they went to the end of the stage I would be right in front of them, but Miki never walked around.
Neither her or Horiguchi seemed to notice me especially, when they were waving to people and teasing people, even though I was literally the only white person there, LOL. But anyway, then I got to go to the handshake event!
I wrote her a letter by hand, with lots of hearts. I thanked her for reading my letter, and told her my Youtube name, and my mail address in case she wants me to teach her English (lol, always looking for students) and that her and Morning Musume are like my sisters, I want everyone to find happiness, and that I love her voice.
I handed it to her myself! When it was my turn, I got in front of her, and just kind of paused, and she was like"...?" and I found my tongue again and said "on your radio show, thank you for reading my letter! I'm Sammi!" and she was like :O :w00t:
I went off the stage and then just ran, I was so high on mikitty goodness, LOL. my legs and arms were tingling, my heart was beating overtime (I have low blood pressure, LOL, maybe that's why) I was shaking. I have to Youtube now. LOL

I really like Okitegami and I'm glad Miki's been doing so much premotion for the single.

I went and sent a tape in to the "Karaoke Contest" that was in the CD jacket. Got a call the other night, even though it said in the information that they would send postcards to those chosen by the end of September, and they said I got in! I get to be in the contest in Tokyo! I have no idea what it's all about, am I going to perform the song and compete for #1 or something? Is Miki gonna be there? It's November 22nd. I checked both Miki and Horiuchi's pages and they have no events listed on the 22nd. So it's not confirmed, but then again, they don't have any conflicts where they couldn't show up....
Anyway, I took off work for it so I hope it's worth it!

Well, I didn't win, I was beaten out by an 8 year old, and an 80 year old, among others. (not like they were that good or anything, esp. the 8 year old, but I wasn't token enough LOL) but still, I sang with Miki literally sitting right in front of me, and it wasn't that bad according to the video I have, LOL. I was nervous as hell though, my entire body was literally shaking while I was singing. I sang in front of Miki, and she gave a comment to everyone that "this group is very varied, there's an 8 year old, a foreigner, a mother, and some guy I think I've seen before at a fan event." LOL
After the singing was done, we watched the rest of the singers, there was a group of 4 miki wotas, one sang in a rock style, one had a leather jacket (I actually saw him before at the handshake event, he remembered me too, he was like "weren't you crying?") some old people, etc.
Then we had the mini-concert, and as usual Miki sang 2 songs and Horiuchi sang like 5. But it was very entertaining and rare to be in that small of a room watching Miki. Then the winners announcement, we all went on the tiny stage with Miki, so basically I could have reached out and grabbed her if I pleased, and then at the end, a pleasant surprise, we all got to go one by one and have our picture taken with Miki and Horiuchi. I think I totally blew Horiuchi off because I faced Miki and did a peace sign with her and he just kinda stood there. But all is well.
I am in the middle of converting and splicing vids for the Youtube post. :) :wub: :wub: :wub:
