Title: Earth Hour
Post by: Pharadox on March 29, 2008, 12:55:34 PM
On March 29, 2008 at 8 p.m., join millions of people around the world in making a statement about climate change by turning off your lights for Earth Hour, an event created by the World Wildlife Fund. (http://www13.earthhourus.org/)

I'd say let's extend that one step further and all turn our computers off for that hour (after all, they give off light), buuut I don't think you can handle it. Can you handle it?

Impossible. Turning my computer off is like turning my life ( :D ) off. Sorry climate  :(

Blah, I already reduced my power consumption by 40%, not going to turn of the rest.

And I already turnoff the desktop (which btw is a laptop) when its not in use.

I wonder are they going to do a satellite photo of the Earth to show how much light is actually reduced during the hour.
By the way, lots of places won't be able to do it as they will be on day-time and they will need the power to run the daily businesses.

I still think earth hour is nothing more than a gimmick.
If people are serious about reducing energy consumption/environment etc. They should really be
doing more in regards to alternative, clean energy (i.e. solar), reducing cars on the road, getting rid
of Hummers and 4WDs in the city etc.

Even something like allowing people to wear more casual, more appropriate clothes in summer instead
of suits, thus not using the air-con as much does a lot more. (it takes far more energy to heat/cool a
space than to light up a space)

That should save enough for us not needing to bother ;)

(BTW in the process of eliminating another 30W/hour by virtualising a machine, not so much because of earth hour but more that old machine is starting to fail)

Haha.. You guys.. It was 8pm in YOUR time zone, and not a set time for everyone to turn off at once..

And Earth Hour wasn't really about saving energy, it was more of an awareness for people to take note and to show how something as simple as turning off a light will help..

I left all my lights off. I wasn't home at 8pm so it wasn't an issue for me.  :D

I was like 'oh crap' I think I missed it, but I really try to conserve as much as possible, but mostly its for my elec bill. I am not burning up my fuel either, my house is around a steady 60-62 all winter long. And yes it gets plenty cold here. But I guess I have done my part.

It was a flop here, I think.

I went out at 8pm and lots of houses in my neighbourhood still had theirs on  XD
