Japanese company claims fibre-optic data transfer record

A Japanese company has developed technology to transmit a two-hour movie in 0.5 seconds, the world's fastest speed achieved with fibre-optic cables in the field, it says.

Kansai Electric used fibre-optic cables on power-transmitting steel towers to achieve the speed of one terabit per second, which is more than 100 times faster than inter-city data transmissions currently in use, a spokesman says.

The company, Japan's second-largest power supplier, has not decided when to put the technology into practical use but says it is possible that it would come in 2010 or later.

Well, fibre is fast, but I think it being a new tech we won't see it in homes anytime soon

Here in holland we actually have some neighbourhoods that have fiber, the TV companies for example use it now to transport the signals to the distribution hubs.
But 'the last mile' is a bit diffucult, because nobody wants to food the bill for that as an ISP.
ADSL(+) and ADSL2 (upto 20Mb/s) are working fast enough over the current telephone lines. And TV cables companies can still do the last part over there coax connections (upto 100Mb/s).

Some industrial areas also have them. Our company is connected by a fiber (not at full speed  8) ) and a 'normal' copper line.
