Title: Spread Firefox - Download Day 2008
Post by: sukeb3 on May 31, 2008, 03:17:07 AM
Today, I saw an interesting a piece on http://bleach7.com/ website about the release of Firefox 3 and their attempt to get a world record of most downloads in 24 hours. I just love firefox and thought to spread the word and can't wait for the new firefox. Here is a direct link to the site.

That would be pretty cool for Firefox to set the record. I've been using it since version 1.0.7 I think, and it's just pure awesome. I've been using Firefox 3 here on my work PC since beta 5, and it just rocks on a whole new level. Very nice, very fast.

I'm using it now ^_^ so far I'm loving it! the address bar is awesome! I can just type "jphip forum" and it shows "forum.jphip.com", it's wayyy faster (usually it eats around 150mb memory, now it's using around 60-80mb), and all the small features are also welcome ^_^

I was supposed to get it last night but the site was inaccessible, taking too long to respond/  XD

Finished installing it here at work and I'm liking it so far. I hope they can release a version of UnPlug for FF3 ASAP. :muffin:

Installed now, looking good. ;)
Only had one add-on that won't work with FF3, but all in all its nothing much to worry about.

So far, so good.
I enjoy the new kind of sleek look it has. It also seems to be working faster for me as well.

...Hmmm. Mine did that before. Unless you had a way older version? Interesting.

Running it now, the icons still look a bit more 'amateur' then IE7 (sample: the home button), but its running.

What I do not like is that it made itself the default browser, and even during the custom setup I didn't see an option to not do that.

At the moment of writing this, with still almost 2 hours to go on the 24 hours Guinness record, they already have 7,307,069 downloads

there is an option though? maybe you missed it?

After using it this whole day, I really like it. even if I browse with 15+tabs, opening sites like youtube, gametrailers, gamespot etc at the same time, the memory usage stays around 120-150mb. when I used the old version it would have gone close to 200mb.

now if only it have more add-ons that are compatible...

whoa, that's a lot O_o would that be enough to get the record?

Ha, totally missed that one, I thought I would see a checkbox during the custom setup somewhere... I actually expected it there (also)

the record of most sofware downloads in 24 hours, I think their final count is around 8 million.

yeah, it was a pretty unusual place to put it ^_^

Okay, so I've taken the plunge, so to speak. Had to tweak the extensions compatibility settings in "about:config" to get a couple of my extensions to work. Also had to change themes as the one I had been using (Noia Extreme) hasn't been made FF3 compatible yet and as a result just looks fucked up.

So what's the consensus grade on 3.0?  Worth the switch?
Title: Re: Spread Firefox - Download Day 2008
Post by: JFC on July 02, 2008, 07:42:37 AM
Well, I'm having to wait another few days for the FF3 compatible version of the Noia Extreme theme. Other than that, I'm finding it okay. Mind you, I already had my FF2 tweaked to run faster than the default settings, so the changes/improvements in speed weren't as significant for me as they probably have been for most users who simply had the default settings.

It is now official

Thanks to the support of the always amazing Mozilla community, we now hold a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours. From 18:16 UTC on June 17, 2008 to 18:16 UTC on June 18, 2008, 8,002,530 people downloaded Firefox 3 and are now enjoying a safer, smarter and better Web.

Well I made the upgrade to 3.0 and it works just fine.

Only thing: I got some weird layout issues on a few websites: Deadspin, Live Journal and some other bit blog sites.  Text and graphics don't sync together, ending up in a linear mush that requires a lot of scrolling down.  I use plain ol' Firefox 2.0 at work and don't have the screwy formatting issues on those websites.

Anyone have the same problem with 3.0?  I can't seem to find any information/fixes on Google...

That's weird, I don't look at many blogs, but the ones I do, look fine for me. And Deadspin looks alright too.

FWIW here's a screenshot from a couple days ago:

What should be aligned on a row on the top is instead formatted on the left column.  Hella strange...

OK someone told me the "style sheet" isn't loading.  Could a FF add-on (adblock?) be causing this?

I took part in this.  I don't know if they've come out with final numbers from this event though.  I think they said it could take a few weeks before everything was sorted out and confirmed.

P.S. -- An update to version 3.0.1 is available now.

yeah, this happens in opera too when you enable the ad filtering user stylesheet. It break some websites that use ads.

I have to say that this is the kind of viral marketing that I hate. I don't have anything against FireFox really, I use it, but it's annoying when they get people to get other people to download it =/ it's like free marketing for them. And it's like working for them for free or listening to friends advertise you stuff =/

Nothing wrong with it imo. Firefox is a free program which uses only "word of mouth" to advertise.

Yeah but so are almost all other browsers =/ And this is less about your friends telling you that it's good and more about the company telling people that they should tell their friends that it's good.

But meh, that's just my opinion =d
Title: Re: Spread Firefox - Download Day 2008

Well its main competition doesn't really need any advertising cause they come standard in the OS, which in some way you do pay for it. And then most other browsers are also closed source.

I see this like a band street team. There are people who go out and spread the word not because they're getting paid, but to show their support. Of course there are those teams who get shit for doing stuff, but you don't get anything from spreading this around. It not like they used any really dirty tactics, unless you think telling people to spread the word is dirty...

Just curious: is the new Firefox 3.6 worth the upgrade?  Some of my plugins didn't make the cut and I can't leave home without them...

Did you check whether there are more up-to-date versions of your plugins? I don't mean just going to Tools->Add-ons->Find Updates but actually going to the homepages of the plugins and checking. I think I've had to do that at least once.
Upgrading one's browser if possible is generally a good idea because of the security updates often packaged with new releases.
Title: Download manager for Firefox
Post by: Saburo on November 17, 2010, 01:59:46 AM
Any suggestions for a download manager plugin?  I use downthemall but it freezes up Firefox on my new desktop and I have to use Task Manager to kill the program in Windows 7.  Right-click saving seems to work OK but I prefer the convenience of saving my download locations, etc.

Used to be one of my fave plugins and never had any issues on my ancient XP machine.  Thanks for any suggestions.
