A 60-year-old Australian man has been sentenced to jail in Thailand for the murder of an American tourist earlier this year.
William Thomas Douglas will serve two years and nine months for killing Gary Poretsky of Hawaii in March.
The pair had been drinking at a restaurant in the northern city of Chiang Mai and in the early hours of the morning, got into an argument.
Douglas took out a gun and shot Poretsky dead.
He was initially sentenced to five and a half years in prison, but the court reduced his term because he confessed. (http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/08/18/2339390.htm)
Hang-on a goddamn minute!! Thailand has the death penalty for drugs, and yet this guy only gets 2years for murder.. Fuck me, you get more jail time than that for saying something bad about the king (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%A8se_majest%C3%A9#Thailand)..

2 years?
That does seem a tad light. Mind you, 2 years in a Thai prison is probably worse than 10 in one of ours...

Can't help but wonder if the sentence would have been harder if the murder victim was a Thai citizen instead of another tourist.

I've watched all of Oz (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118421/), and most of Gangland (http://www.history.com/minisites/gangland), and highly doubt any Thai prison could be worse..
