Title: The "Favorite albums/singles/songs of 2008" thread
Post by: tenkei on December 16, 2008, 01:15:54 AM
The year's almost done, so its about time to recount all those releases that tickled your fancy. top 12 albums? best 31 singles? the one song that you had on repeat for 2 months straight? Its all up to you so post your favorites from this past year. maybe youll find some great material from someone else's lists.

if you're still doing some listening or shifting around, feel free to secure a post for later. I know I gotta work out my last couple album spots XD

Let's start off with some tracks.

I wanted to go for the simple top 10 albums, but I couldn't decide so top 15 it is. No particular order.

And a foreign shout out to...

This is the third time I've edited this list.  WILL I EDIT IT AGAIN???  The world waits with baited breath.

Top ten (no order):

Lantern Parade - Tokyo Eye and Ear Control
A strange and unbalanced album. Becoming in turn everything from trip-hop to funk to rap it constantly retains a level of dark intelligence and introspection even in it's most schizophrenic moments.

Shing02 - 歪曲
As groovy and tight as humanly possible. The best rap album of the year.

Idea Of A Joke - We Are All Making History
Catchier than the plague.  And twice as funky.

にせんねんもんだい - デスティネーション トーキョー
Simply sublime dancefloor jams of epic construction.

SPARTA LOCALS - Leecher
Tightly wound, neurotic pop songs at their best. Just a big massive ball of energy.

ZAZEN BOYZ - Zazen Boyz 4
Seemingly disjointed at first glance. Slowly reveals itself to have the same intelligence, passion, and daring as everything else the Zazen Boys have ever done.

Quinka, with a Yawn - Field Recordings
Flat out heartbreaking. Stunningly beautiful.

IMAHORITSUNEOYOSHIDATATSUYA - Dots
Faster and more technical than anything else released this year.  This gets on the list through the sheer number of plays it managed to rack up. Totally insane, partially nonsensical, and perhaps actually terrible prog-rock.

LSD POND - LSD Pond
Drugged-out insane stoner jams. Ranging from free-form rock to blasts of feedback and noise. Surprisingly patient and sensitive.

SITAAR TAH! - Semimimimimin
Beautiful 43-minute long symphony of flutes, cicadas, voices, and sitaars.

10-20:

Bugy Craxone - Hello, Punk Lovers / Good Morning, Punk Lovers (If they had trimmed the fat and jammed it all into one big album it would have been near the top.)
Accidents in too large Field - New Buildings (Too shoooort.)
Rovo - Nuou
sgt. - Stylus Fantasticus
TWIN TAIL - すべては許されている
Makino Takuma - In The Suburbs  (Charming and addicting. Surprisingly ambitious too with the way the two halves of the record bounce off of each other.)
Sawako - Bitter Sweet
Mass of the Fermenting Dregs - Mass of the Fermenting Dregs
Ostooandell - Music
Bed - Response

Special mentions:

V.A. - Post Flag
Boredoms - 77 Boadrum (Probably would be near the top if I had heard it earlier in the year.)
NATSUMEN - ONExMORExSUMMERxSHIT!!!
Uhnellys - Mawaru
