Bioshock goes into my collection as one of those special games to me. Up there with Shenmue, The World Ends With You or Shadow Of The Colossus, it's an example of a game that I knew very little about, and playing through it delivered something new, something different with high production values in every department that I just couldn't help but be impressed by. People call it a rehash of System Shock, but for someone who's never played the SS games, it's really incredible. The story in particular is just so rich, full of political, religious ideaologies and 'evil' characters that I could actually understand and to a point, sympathise with. And what a setting to play the game in with Rapture. That opening scene in particular..breath-taking. Every little thing about Rapture, how it was formed to it's eventual demise is all laid out there for you to play through and appreciate if you want it to, and I like games that don't bash your head around with it's story. And of course there's the gameplay to go on top of it all allowing you to experiment with all the cool plasmids on the splicers and Big Daddies.
Moral choices too clear cut? Unssatisfying final third of the game? Doesn't bother me reallly. Thought it was incredible from start to finish. And there's never been a game cut scene more effective than Ryan's 'A man chooses, a slave obey's' final words
So why make a thread on a 2 yr old game? Largely because of this viral site (http://somethinginthesea.com/) recently revealed for the upcoming Bioshock 2, with the teaser trailer shown below:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41898.html
Now according to a reliable source here (http://www.eurogamer.net/forum_thread_posts.php?thread_id=103840&start=210) there could be some kind of big reveal coming soon :w00t: Creative director behind the first one isn't involved in the sequel, but let's not get too optimistic. Let's hear some suggestions! Any new gameplay ideas? More difficult moral choices? Where would you like it to be set? Or even if you just want to talk about experiences with the 1st game feel free to share. Let's all share in the love and admit that really, you felt like hell after murdering a Big Daddy...
Just me then?...

I'm still slowly playing through Bioshock, I think I got a final third to go. I picked it up about early last year, played through the first third, played again late last year, through the second third. I guess it's time for me to finish soon. It's a great game, but I just can't stay into it cause it gets annoying at some parts. I do like what they did though, and it's pretty innovative. It's a really good game, and I too am looking forward to the sequel(prequel?)

I think sequel. Don't read on if you don't want to be spoiled, but if the viral site is anything to go by....
it looks like Big Daddies are capturing former Little Sisters that you rescued if you got the good ending
-
I don't play shooters (mainly because I r.e.a.l.l.y SUCK BIG TIME at playing them ) but I had Bioshock on my radar eversince it came out and I so want to play it one day.

Big Sisters? Or is it Big Mommas? XD
-
Everyone's sayin Big Sisters... what's up with that? This story seems too crazy right now
-
They should have went crazy with it and called them Drunk Nephew.
I liked the first one, the different endings could have probably been fleshed out more to you as the main character. But hey another Bioshock is good news to me
-
The sequel has players assuming control of "the first ever" Big Daddy, according to creative director Jordan Thomas. Players will be armed with a drill, and will also be able to upgrade their weapons and various plasmids.
As you liberate Little Sisters from other Big Daddies, you'll be able to either Harvest or Adopt them. Adoption apparently lets players escort a Little Sister around levels, fighting off splicers as the Little Sister harvests the all-powerful Adam from corpses.
The information surfaced over at the GameSpot Forums, and was backed up by blurry pictures of the article. The posters there and at NeoGAF also a provided wealth of other details, apparently coming from the same source as the pictures.
While the below details were once unconfirmed, Shacknews has since verified that all of the following information is valid. Additionally, a few points have been updated:
* The game is set 10 years after the first BioShock.
* There will be a multiplayer mode, but no details were given.
* The Big Sister is a grown-up Little Sister, and she's hunting you.
* Some levels take place on the sea floor outside of Rapture.
* The Big Sister will periodically pop up after you kill enough Big Daddies. Her arrival is apparently signaled by a Little Sister singing a song.
* The Big Sister is described as fast and "the hardest thing in the game." She'll utilize telekinesis to throw objects at you or use them as shields.
* Your drill overheats, and cannot be used constantly.
* As a Big Daddy, you'll be able to do that nifty shoulder bash move.
* Upgrade trees are now more diverse.
* The Incinerate plasmid allows you to throw a fireball or shoot a stream of fire, depending on upgrades.
* Plasmids can now be combined. For example, mixing Incinerate and Cyclone Trap will result in a flaming trap.
* Weapons and plasmids can be used at the same time.
* You can now heal damaged turrets and bots.
* Players will explore Fontaine Futuristics, which is where the Adam energy is harvested from Little Sisters. Through this, you will learn how the Adam is recovered.
* Series creator Ken Levine is not "substantially involved" in the sequel, as he is working on the "next big game" at 2K Boston.
The 2K Marin-developed shooter sequel is set to arrive between August 1 and October 31, 2009, and is "destined" for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The company has yet to state which versions will hit by October's end.

Some interesting ideas, not sure about playing as a Big Daddy the whole way through and I'm not thinking about multiplayer. Sounds like a tacked on idea to me already. Think I will wait til I see one gameplay video, then I'll try to stay away from any more videos until the reviews come out.

Bioshock 2 Preview (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/bioshock-2-preview)
Now I'm excited. Reading this preview and another one in gamesTM, shows that the development team knows what made the first one great and look to improve upon it. The design team in particular sounds like a group of real clever clogs. I only hope the end product delivers. :w00t:
-
Looking great. I should really finish the first one once I get another/repaired xbox.
-
I heard the guy who did fort frolic is taking over for Bioshock 2 which is awesome because that was an amazing experience.
-
^ Also did level design for The Cradle level in Thief III if I'm not mistaken. Ask anyone and they'll tell you it's one of the scariest experiences they've had in any video game.

NICE! Exploring the ocean part looks so awesome and beautiful. Reminds me why I loved Bioshock, great atmosphere.
Looks like you can dual wield the plasmids with weapons now too?
-
I finally started playing Bioshock (on easy  because I suck at shooters) and MAAAAN is this game awesome!!!

Release dates are out!
Europe - Oct 30th
US - Nov 3rd

^ Awesome! I admit, I got a little freaked out too when I heard the Little Sister XD
-
This is sudden. Didn't realise Bioshock 2 was out this week. :o I expect it won't probably be as good as the first as you started off in Rapture with no sense of who you are or what that place is, whereas this seems more catered to the dedicated fans and most of the surprise elements in exploring the environment I would say are gone. But still looks pretty good, reviews actually say that the multiplayer side of things is surprisingly solid.
I just want to order the Uber edition:

-
I'm honestly not looking forward to the multiplayer of Bioshock 2, not that it may be bad or not. But what I liked most in the first one was the mood of the single player.
I've seen the review at IGN and the game seems good, especially the visuals in the underwater moments.

I got around to playing the online portion and it's pretty fun. I like the trials they give you. It's pretty much like MW2. I need to get my own copy so i can play more. I like the new plasmids in the game too.
-
I just got the game. After the intro, which I like a lot, when we wake up in Rapture, I started to feel good and the nostalgia all over again hehe.
The scenario in the game is by far one of the best I've seen !
-
Just bought Bioshock 2 a few days ago. Way better then the first one.
-
Just got it today. Great stuff so far. I always love Bioshock's world and atmosphere and this is even more colorful but maybe less scary. Dual wielding feels really great.
-
New Bioshock game was just announced. Developed by Irrational Games, and helmed by series creator Ken Levine we have Bioshock : Infinite. But there's something markably different about this one. Take a look at the trailer and find out why:

Out in 2012. Cannot wait. :w00t:

Cool! Bioshock 2 was great and all but didn't have the wonder of a brand new mysterious world. The setting for this seems beautiful and bright and awesome!
I heard people saying the name should have been different like Skyshock or Airshock and I totally agree. Stupid marketing dumbos. -___-

I saw the video today. It seems like a pretty good idea.
Being in the sky gives another big feel of isolation because the only wait out is down.
I have yet to finish Bioshock 2 and can't wait to see more on this one.

Holy. Freaking. Crap. There's a gameplay trailer out of Bioshock Infinite and it looks amazing

Jesus Christ... O_O If the game is half as good as that then it will be the best game ever. The City looks incredible.
-
I got Bioshock 2 for Christmas. To be honest I really didn't know what to expect, I know that despite a 4/5 review, Jeff from Giant Bomb wasn't too much of a fan, even recently when the subject of Bioshock 2 came up he said something along the lines of how he's already forgotten everything that happened in it. Not saying I would have felt the same way, but let's just say I was slightly aprehensious before playing. Well I will say, when I saw the opening cinematic, then that was it. The world of Rapture had hooked me in once again and I'm loving every minute so far. That incredible sense of isolation, of being involved in the most bizarre setting with even weirder, twisted inhabitants. I will say that it's not quite as surprising so far but I think it's down to being so early in the game plus I'm seeing stuff that I've already seen before, so introducing splicers or Big Daddies isn't quite as effective as the original. Really liked the underwater section, walking out to see Rapture was pretty epic.
Multiplayer is a bit of a mixed affair. For one there's hardly anyone on there to play against, and two those you are playing against are near max level, so you're dealing with someone who has the best weapons/plasmids/tonics, meaning I can hardly get a look in. It's functional, I don't see it replacing COD but then they both handle differently so I guess it's an unfair comparison. But yeh, I like it, it's fun.

First 2 minutes of the E3 demo (http://www.giantbomb.com/two-minutes-of-the-bioshock-infinite-e3-demo/17-4466/)
It's a prelude to the full 15 min unveil on Thurs 7th July. All I can say is, TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY!!!!
-
HOLY SHIT! THIS GAME IS AWESOME!
The further I get in this game the more I love it. After playing a lot of games with regenerative health, it feels so good to have health pickups. It's scary (In a good way) to go from room to room not knowing if anyone will be there.
Not a big deal, but it kinda sucks that when I transfered my data from my old Xbox to my new one that my achievements didn't transfer. I had a few already, like the completed research ones that I won't be able to get this playthrough since I can't take any more photos of them. I'll get them again in another playthrough.

Woaaaa yea I'm so excited to see the demo, I guess I'm going to have to up my spike TV watching quota to more than 0 times a year for this one. This is a game made just for me I think. I love those "down time" moments in games. :D Then I remember it isn't out for a year still. :(

UGH I REALLY WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME!!!
It's like my dream game with the guns and weapons and all the powers you get! Yeah I really love it~!
But I don't have an X-Box or a PS3 so all I have left is my laptop but that isn't compatible with games software. Though I think my Dad's rented laptop is but I honestly doubt he'll let me install the game on it cause it's rented.
Guess I'll just stick to watching other's play it instead as I do with every other game I want to play. orz

I finally got Bioshock~
But I'm freaking out so bad and I barely started, even though I know what's going to happen.

The developers just announced a '1999 Mode'. But what is it?
BioShock Infinite’s 1999 Mode will feature an especially demanding gaming experience, forcing you to examine your decisions while going through your adventure in Columbia. With every choice you make, there are irreversible implications, and if your choices guide you down a path not suited to your play style, you will suffer for it.
It’s not simply a matter of adjusting the difficulty sliders in the game – the team went much further than that. Resource planning? If you’re to survive this mode, proper planning will be crucial. Combat specializations? You’ll need to develop them efficiently and effectively throughout the story; any weapon will be useless to you unless you have that specialization. Combat? You will need to carefully target every shot, and your health will be set to an entirely different baseline. Game saves? Well, yes, there will be those, but according to Irrational Games Creative Director Ken Levine “there are game saves, and you’re gonna f***ing need them.”
http://irrationalgames.com/insider/announcing-1999-mode/ (http://irrationalgames.com/insider/announcing-1999-mode/)
Awesome! Sounds like something I will do after playing it once! In fact you could say I'm gonna party like it's 1999! (Sorry, that joke had to be made)

BioShock Infinite - Lighthouse Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr7gVTPbMSk#ws)
Much has been said of their choice for the box art in this game and it's 'chin down, eyes up' male protaganist with a gun glaring. So much so, that they are even including reversible box art covers as an appeasement. (http://irrationalgames.com/insider/poll/)
Some of the cover art options are cool, I like #4 and #6. However, those options and the fact that there are a lot of gamers saying they're so much better than the one they picked to be the default one, shows exactly why hardcore gamers are not marketers. Had I not known anything about the game, I wouldn't be able to tell you the first thing about the game just by looking at some of those alternative covers. At least from the default cover they've chosen, you know 'oh ok, so a shooter then'

Bioshock Infinite is out this week? Seriously? I've been on such a media blackout that I only know about it now! Now I'm excited. :w00t: I read one review which said it's as important as Ocarina of Time and even went as far as to say it was not only better but infinitely better which is....ridiculous!
-
Anyone else played Infinite yet?
I just beat it and those last few hours I was about like:
They really outdid themselves with this game in just about every way. Brilliant music and sound design. Slick, exhilarating traversal and combat. Mind twisting and ultimately really touching story. Not to mention an absolutely ASTONISHING beautiful world to see and explore. I think I need to let it sink in before I play again but I want to go through it knowing everything. I think there were a lot of hints I didn't pick up on. lol
-
Got it yesterday and yeh, the world is great. So much so that I'm just walking slowly through the world taking all the detail in. I've played it for an hour or more and I haven't even got that far into the game because of that reason. The Beach Boys was a great touch. So yeh, so far I'm really enjoying it. I'm actually glad to have avoided any trailers for this because for the first time in a while I have literally no idea what to expect because I've avoided any kind of marketing for this game which all too often lets you see some of the big set piece moments or general gameplay/story beats. I can't wait to play more.
-
I am currently playing infinite and my god the world is beautiful. everything is so detailed. So far the game play is amazing, its definitely stepped up from bioshock 2. Cant wait to finish it!
-
Got this yesterday. Looks beautiful. Is addictive.
At first I didn't expect very much except for the graphics. Thought the complexity would kill the fun for me.
But I got into it quickly once I walked around at this holy place. Turns out the transportation via rails is done easy and comfortable.
The only notably negative point for me so far is the fighting  I like it best when it's all peaceful and shiny looking good, makes me wish it would be some kind of GTA like game.
At some points some parts feel like skyrim but guess that can be both good and negative~ personally I don't like those moments too much but it doesn't hurt.
-
My Songbird arrived in the mail today. Looking forward to it. :)
-
I'm not really enjoying Infinite as much as other people or reviews hype it up to be. I think a big part of it might be that I'm playing on Hard and it almost seems unfairly hard. My shields break so fast and fighting the Handyman is just so frustrating because there's nothing I can really do. He always hits me and I always die, so it's an exercise in just chipping away at his health each time before I die, then come back and wittle it down til it's dead. But even if the gameplay was perfect then the story's not really gripping me nor do I really care as much for Elizabeth as the game wants me to. I mean the opening hours are great, completely immersive and I was enthralled throughout. But the middle which I'm on right now? Eh. Kind of tame. Maybe it'll all turn around for me at the end, which I've heard people say is the best thing about the game. Don't get me wrong I like playing it still, but is it a 10/10? Nope.
-
Are handymen vulnerable to murder of bee- I mean crows?
And yeah, the gameplay does feel like I'm playing Silent Scope with my carbine
Well I'm at least glad its not another "Duty of Battlefield Honor" modern military shooter
(and it's not almost entirely all cutscenes to the point it's a visual novel I'M LOOKING AT YOU BLACK OPS2 & TOMB RAIDER2013)
-
There are a lot of people that seem to be having troubles with the difficulty. I think with any game if I ever have problems, I just lower the difficulty to easy and enjoy the ride. I just don't tend to have any patience. Although tbh I didn't find Infinite all that hard. Even 1999 mode I didn't have too much trouble until the final battle and that was more because it is so chaotic and I brain farted on a key thing. I died here and there but it wasn't frequent.
I think a lot depends on play style and gear. The strategy I found which is fun and makes you mega powerful:
-Burning Halo (switch to Storm when not using charge a lot)
-Blood to Salt (switch to Winter Shield when in an area with skylines)
-Urgent Care (switch to Brittle skinned when needed)
-Overkill (switch to Vampire's Embrace when needed)
-Upgrade salts then shields
-Upgrade charge boost and charge aid asap
-Shotgun + Carbide
-Use undertow to take out entrenched enemies, sniper groups and knock tough enemies off ledges
You are now God  You have invulnerability+shield recharge once you hit an enemy with charge, tons of AOE and chain damage due to the charge upgrades, storm and/or overkill.
As for fighting the Handyman I really liked them just because they are so aggressive and keep ya moving. The strategy I found worked well if done right was to jump on the rails above them to get them frustrated. Then as soon as they jump on to shock you off, drop down and you can get a couple shots at their heart. You can also use undertow on them (or any other machinery) which not only short-circuits them, it also sets them right in front of you for a few seconds to get shots at the heart.
Here's a video with a similar set up.

Keeping in mind that I'm playing on Hard I made it to the Lady Comstock boss fight and that may be one of the worst boss fights I've played in any game. Makes me wonder if anyone at Irrational Games playtested it before putting the game out there. I lost so much goddamn money by dying over and over and it actually got so bad that the game decided to just kill the boss for me as I respawned and continued on with the game, as if to say "hey we know we fucked up the balance dramatically on this one so we'll let it slide." If it does anything like that again I'm just putting it down to Normal and playing on, because it's not worth me getting frustrated over it. Fucking ridiculous.

Tell me about it, I'm stuck on that part on 1999 mode. I'm just trying to use the sniper, but the constant resurrections
-
Oh man don't just sit there and snipe, charge that bitch with the AOE gear! You need to fry her minions so she cant keep raising them over and over. Charge with burning halo, blood to salt, urgent care, overkill etc. It will damage her with a AOE that will turn the solders bodies to ash so she can't resurrect em.
Basically just bum rush her with charge shotgun/rockets and charge her whenever she tries to raise her minions, use undertow if the minions get up and run or use return to sender when in trouble or when she is charging up her blast.
I beat all three instances first try on Hard and 1999 (although it did get pretty hairy for me a couple times lol) :D

Woahhhhhh thanks man! This advice actually let me beat her at the graveyard (did die once T-T) >:D! When I played through on hard, the first encounter was definitely the most difficult fight I feel and I should hopefully breeze through the next two with this strategy!
-
I switched on the game for the first time again after that ridiculous boss fight and guess what? Because of the game's horrible checkpointing, I have to do it all over again. Fuuuuuuuuck that! :banghead:
I don't mean to badmouth the game a lot, I'm not trolling. These are just obvious complaints I have about the game that prevent it from being this 10/10 perfect game I constantly keep reading.
-
^ It's great to give your experiences! But don't let reviews get to ya, they are just one persons personal experience good or bad and of course that varies from person to person.
Sounds like that issue might be the thing where the order of the time/date of the last few auto saves gets screwed up? I think there was a procedure to fix it, maybe disconnecting then re-connecting to Live, not sure though (it happened to me in Fable 2 and it was annoying). It saves right after boss fights and encounters but it may have reverted to the previous one because of a certain series of events. From what I have heard the checkpoints can be far apart in a few parts from, never really noticed it myself but I also played a good chunk of the game all at once. I suppose it could be a minor annoyance but I can also see why they did auto saves because manual saves would make even 1999 mode super easy.
-
So I beat the game and yes, no doubt about it, it ends brilliantly. It's revelatory, shocking and thought provoking, I thought it was great. People talk about crying during it but I never felt that way, it was more like "Oh! Oh shit! Wowww!". I guess I just wasn't into the characters so much that I didn't really feel anything towards them, more that the conclusion to the story was done really well. I guess it's a testament to the story that I'm still reading up about it to find other people's theories or debating the game, or even just pointing out the nods and hidden references dug into the game that you will only see on a repeat playthrough that seem so obvious now.
My favourite was Booker literally having a book on Quantum Physics being hit on his head. I do like the fact that the concerns before the game was released was on how similar Infinite might be to Bioshock 1 and then realise that it was intentional all along and not just a rehash. That they found a way to address that the Bioshock games will always have these themes like Zelda (a hero in green, Princess Zelda, the Triforce etc) and have that be part of the story was really nicely done.
I have some issues with the story, e.g. the sudden change from DeWitt to racist, religious fanatic Comstock after a baptism and issues with the game as a whole which I've already talked about that made it far from perfect. But it is still a good game and surely one of the best this year.

Oh wow! I just heard the craziest Easter Egg ever. It might be a crazy coincidence but you know what, it sounds like it's not and I'm willing to believe it.
So you know how Songbird gets taken to Rapture and dies there? If you go and play Bioshock 1, there's a point in the game where you meet a guy playing the piano and it seems like you can hear Songbird's death cry in the background. All could be a coincidence you might say, until you look closer and see the pianist is playing a song whilst wearing a bird mask. Fucking crazy.

e.g. the sudden change from DeWitt to racist, religious fanatic Comstock after a baptism
With the Multiverse theory there is a different dimension for every moment that passes. There could be an infinite amount of variations, from a Booker that punts babies and shoots everyone he sees to a Booker that kisses everyone and starts a foundation to help the needy to anything in between. There were something like 120 variations of the Booker that tried to save Elizabeth before the player Booker was the first to be successful. Plus Booker was a pretty terrible person all around even before the Baptism. Murdering, racist all in the name of denying his own heritage.
Also I think it was Fink that was responsible for a lot of the racism you see in Columbia.
