Post by: peti-chan on June 01, 2009, 07:35:35 PM
Yeah I know it’s been a while :sweatdrop: but some family issues and school leaving exams forced me to turn the lurking mode on :badluck: Hopefully this is going to change now, when the school is finally over XD Anyway, I have a new story for you! :twothumbs Something inspired by various j-rock/visual kei/oshare kei artists XD Let me know what you think  constructive criticism welcomed and sorry for any grammar/spelling mistakes :hee:

OUT OF TUNE

Track 1. Intro

A small house in the suburbs of Tokyo. At first glance, house like every other on that street. Two floors, clean windows, walls painted on yellowish color and a green tree gushing next to it completely out of nowhere, contrasting with the concrete surrounding. However, in the basement of that ordinary house a new legend of rock was going to be born....But judging by the sound reverberating under the lone swinging light bulb, it wasn't going to be so easy…

Rasps, twangs, bangs and some other hard to classify sounds, were mixing in the stuffy room, creating wild, racking noise like a bunch of fighting cats. The vocalist’s voice was hardly audible, having serious problems with forcing its way through the music muddle. Though the music and lyrics had been already written and instruments tuned, there was still something wrong....Five rookie rockers were playing totally not listening to each other...

“Stooooop!”

For the first time since they started practicing, the vocalist’s voice reached members ears. Well, actually not everyone’s...One of the guitarists was still furiously playing her solo after falling to her knees...

“Kame...Kame-chan...”

The lead guitarist was trying her best to bring her friend back to the earth but seemingly poking her shoulder and tugging her sleeve just wasn’t enough to accomplish that.

“KAMEI ERI!!! STOP PLAYING~~!!!”

Finally, upon moving aside her white, fluffy earmuff and shouting loudly into her ear, she was able to succeed...

“Ee? What?”

Girl dressed in white, stood up from her kneeling position and beamed everyone an innocent smile before hiding her embarrassed face behind the white bandana covered with small, green turtles.

“You tell me what...It sounded like...like...”

“Crap?”

The drummer eagerly helped out her leader with finding the proper word that could describe their music.

“Yeah, like crap...” The girl sighed with resignation and disappointment over the drummer’s easy-going attitude.

“Well, we would sound better if a certain drummer had focused on playing the right rhythm and not on admiring our leader’s hot ass....” Girl in dazzling pink T-shirt, muttered teasingly, squinting at her friend behind the drum set.

“Shut up Sayu!”

Silver bracelets clinked and pink drumstick flew just above the bassist’s head.

“Nhnnn~~” Sayumi stuck out her tongue, proud of dodging her friend’s throw.

“Oh, wait you little!” The youngest member clenched her fists ready to attack as soon as she would get out of her “drum prison”.

Seeing as the situation was getting more and more out of control, the leader felt obliged to intervene, preventing another war from breaking out.

“Reina! Cut it out!”

”But she started!” The girl whined, pouting her lips.

“Never mind, just stop it. We don’t need another argument of yours. Tomorrow we have...”

“The recording of your first single under one of the most popular independent record labels.”

Leader’s lecture was interrupted as on the stairs that led to the basement, appeared young woman in her twenties with brown, wavy hair, clothed in a short black coat.

“Right, Ai-chan?”

“Mhm...” The vocalist nodded timidly as the woman slowly approached her.

“That’s why, I came to check how are you doing guys.” She smirked, looking deeply into Ai’s eyes while correcting her red-black checkered tie.

“Actually, Fujimoto-san....the truth is we have some problems.” The lead guitarist and also the sub-leader of the band meddled in, trying to save her friend from the seemingly embarrassing situation for her.

Yet Fujimoto still had her eyes fixed on the blushing vocalist, taking care of her black hat, tilting it a bit to the left then to the right then to the left and in the end its position stood the same.

“Problems you say? Like what kind of? You don’t like the new clothes I bought you?”  She poked the guitarist’s pompon of a black-white woolen hat.

“No, no, no, no. Clothes are ok, just like the ones we used to wear.” The girl stammered, reassuring the suspiciously looking at her older woman.

“So, what’s the problem? I thought you had already written a song.”

“Yeah we do have a song but...”

Silence fell after leader’s unfinished sentence as no one exactly knew how to explain their sudden indisposition.

“We can’t play it correctly?” Reina spoke up, uncertain of her own words.

“You can’t play it?” Fujimoto repeated in disbelief. “You can’t play a song that you had written yourselves?”

“It seems like we aren’t in the best shape today...” Sayumi murmured and plucked a string of her bass, causing deep, dull twang to resound for a second.

“Well, then I just hope that tomorrow you will be in shape. Deal with whatever problems you have and just play. Remember, it’s all about the fun...right Gaki?” She patted sub-leader’s head and flashed everyone an encouraging smile. “And now excuse me I have a date in fifteen minutes. So, see ya tomorrow.”

Smack

“Ouch!” Gaki whimpered as the rubber strap which connected her skirt with the baggy leg stockings, smacked her bare skin, leaving a pale red mark. “Fujimoto-san!” She yelled but the woman had already vanished into the light, coming from behind the basement doors.

Geez, and that unreliable woman is our manager...She thought but had to admit that without her they still would be just a bunch of brats that “imitated” a rock band. She was rich and knew how to make business, as for that they had an easier start into the music world. That indie contract was also thanks to her.

Nevertheless, watchful Risa couldn’t get rid of the feeling that the woman had some “lolita fetish” and they just seemed to perfectly fit her tastes...It wasn’t a secret that Miki was very fond of girls. When they first met, she ostentatiously flirted with their leader what caused Risa to flame with fury...

“Gaki-san, everything alright?”

“Ah...Yeah.”

Feeling Ai’s palm on her shoulder, she had to put off her personal observations and suspicions for some other time.

“I suggest we should take some break.”

Ai looked around the room, studying her bandmate’s faces and as everyone agreed with her by slightly nodding, she put her mic on one of the amplifiers and with head held low as if trying to hide her gloomy face under her hat, she left the basement.

The rest of the girls carefully observed her, listening to the rhythmical stomps of her white martens on the wooden stairs.

“Leader seems to be in a bad mood, nee?” Eri pointed out sadly and also put away her white guitar.

“And her gloomy mood has an audibly bad effect on us.” Sayu concluded and Risa’s deep sigh seemed to prove her theory right.

“You make that sound like it all would be just Ai-chan’s fault. Maybe something is bugging her but it isn’t any kind of explanation why we play like a group of fucking amateurs.” The drummer snapped angrily as if Sayumi’s words would concern herself and not her leader.

“Calm down Reina. Sayu didn’t mean that.”

Being now in charge, Gaki tried to calm down the young Yankee who left her drum set and drank mineral water while glowering at the bassist. “It’s just since the day we singed that contract, she always looks as if worried about something.”

“As for that we are worried too...”

“Our positive energy fades away...”

“And we can’t play our music...”

Reina sadly summed up Sayumi’s and Eri’s earlier conclusions.

“I’ll go talk with her.”

Risa leaned her black guitar next to Eri’s and left to find their leader.

~♪ ♪ ♪~

Ai took a walk to the nearby park and sat under the cherry blossom tree that grew on the sidelines of the green meadow. Despite the nice weather there weren’t much people of what she was afraid while heading here. She needed some time alone in silence to think over certain things. Tomorrow her dream was going to become reality. Tomorrow everything was going to change...

She looked through the pink petals at the clear blue sky above her. Wind was playing with her short strands as she took off her hat. Spring was in its full bloom and the world looked completely different from the one they saw after their arrival to Tokyo over a year ago in winter...

However, was she happy with all the changes...?

Of course she was! After all, they were working very hard and sacrificed many things in order to get to that point in their lives.

So, why she was afraid of what was going to come instead of being excited about it…?

Until now it was just pure fun...Playing at small clubs or in their basement, they hadn’t even thought about signing contracts, joining record labels and so on. They even hadn’t had a decent demo tape. She always thought that before all that could happen they had to play hundreds of concerts and be submitted to various challenges. And here, after seven months of playing, Fujimoto came to them and announced that a record label wanted to sign a contract with them…without listening to their demo or seeing their performance...It was more than obvious that her money played a decisive role in signing that contract...

So, were they really ready for that? After all, Reina was still just 16...and what if playing “seriously” wouldn’t appeal to them? Sure, they still were indies. No experts from marketing stood above their heads, telling them what they should sing or what clothes they should wear and they weren’t obliged to reach some limit of sold CDs. They still were free spirits...

But during that one year in Tokyo she was able to learn how cruel the music world could be...

It was extremely hard to arise on the rock scene and remain on it while new bands were appearing every month. She saw tens of bands which signed contracts and disbanded just few months later, whether because they hadn’t gained enough popularity or reached conclusion that after all, music wasn’t the thing they wanted to do for the rest of their lives. And was their humble experience enough to save them from being sucked in by the black hole of averageness what would definitely mean the end for them? What’s more, she certainly didn’t want to go through something like her friend leaving the band from whichever reason...it seemed like particularly that was her biggest concern…

She stared at the black button with a red word LEADER, pinned to her hat that she got from girls on her 20th birthday. She didn’t know what was worse, the fact that she doubted in her friends, in herself or in their dreams overally. After all, she was the only adult and the leader, she should have been the bedrock of the band, encouraging the rest and believing in them and yet all she did was worrying...

Sound of quiet steps interrupted her pondering. She noticed Risa coming slowly her way .The long, white T-shirt and the mini-skirt with thin, white vertical stripes along with her baggy leg stockings in the same pattern were making her look much taller than she was in reality.

Ai smiled a warm acknowledgeable smile and made some place under the tree for her friend to sit down.

“Beautiful, nee?”

“Mhm...” She nodded at Risa’s comment concerning the blooming sakura above them. She closed her eyes and inhaled the sweet scent of spring that wind was spreading around them.

Gaki’s presence somehow calmed her down. She knew she could count on her. They were best friends, connected by that invisible thread of emotions and mutual experiences. They knew each others secrets and feelings...No matter what would happen she would always stay with her, right…?

Suddenly, she felt something tickling her head and opened her eyes, just to be met by the pair of brown sparkling orbs...

Risa’s face was just inches away from hers, gradually covering with red hue…

“Gaki-chan...” She blurted quietly, surprised by the sudden nearness of her friend.

“Ah...you...you had those in hair.” Gaki stuttered and reached her open palm with pink petals, trying to justify her actions.

Ai looked upon the palm on which five petals rested. Carried by the wind as if by the hands of fate, they found each other on some random palm but any second each of them could set off on another journey leaving the rest...It was the same as with them...She took the palm into her own and simply closed it...

Blushing Gaki stared at her hand being held by Ai’s and felt silky wisps tickling her cheek as leader’s head rested on her shoulder.

“Nee, Ai-chan what is troubling you?” Risa asked quietly, being actually more worried by her friend’s behavior than pleased with it.

“Promise me...that you will never leave my side...”

Ai carefully studied as the surprise drawing on the bean-shaped face changed into warm understanding.

“I promise....”

The answer cut through air accompanied by the gentle breeze...Time stopped for a moment. There was nothing more to be said... The oath was engraved in their hearts...

Gazing into each others eyes, girls didn’t notice that they were being carefully observed during their “intimate” moment...

“Ekhm....Reina hates to interrupt such a romantic moment but we also have something to say...”

The other three members stood above the sweet couple with Reina at the front, having her hands full of bracelets, crossed in an angry manner. She bent toward the sub-leader and leader, giving the first a fleeting glare and flashing the other with megawatt grin.

“We also aren’t going to leave you....” She exclaimed happily. “Baka!” And added huffing.

“Honestly, how could you think we would leave you?” Sayumi looked sympathetically from behind’s Reina’s back at the confused Ai.

“I thought...that maybe... after signing that contract we…we would change and maybe you…would change your mind and…we would...”

“Disband…?” Eri sadly murmured the doomed word, interrupting her leader’s nervous stammer.

“Yeah...” Ai admitted hanging her head down, being ashamed of her own thoughts.

“Tsk...” Young Yankee snorted scornfully.” Are you kidding? Reina will bang her drums until her hands will freaking fall off!” She reached her open palms as if to remind her leader that she still had them. “As long as…as long as....Ai-chan will be her Leader...” She whispered, abandoning her cocky expression and replacing it with a sweet smile.

“Yep. Same goes for me…” Sayumi put her hand on Reina’s shoulder, coming into view. “Except that drum banging.” She winked at the speechless vocalist.

“And me!” Eri joined her friend’s side, smiling childishly and doing the peace sign.

“So, stop sulking, ‘kay? Cos when you’re worried...”

“We are worried...”

“And we can’t spread the fun with our music.”

The trio said their lines as if they would have rehearsed the whole speech earlier in the basement.

“They are right Ai-chan. You are the one who had woken up those dreams in us and now you should take responsibility for them...” Gaki patted Ai-chan’s shoulder and stood up from the ground, reaching a hand to her.

“Guys...” Leader whispered feeling tears in the corner of her eyes. “Thanks.” She grabbed the warm palm and found herself encircled by her bandmates who were hugging her and tangling her hair affectionately.

Finally, she understood. They weren’t some ordinary band. They were special because, first and foremost, they were a group of loyal friends. That fact made them invincible...No matter what would happen they could always count on each other. No one and nothing could destroy that bond which was tied by the music they were playing...

“So, now I suggest you should take your cute ass to the basement, grab your mic and show us your magic...”  Reina bared her fangs in a wicked grin, nudging her leader.

Ai glanced upon each member with some mysterious smile wandering on her lips and put on her hat, again hiding her face under it.

Everyone attentively observed her every action like waiting for an oracle to speak.

“So...” Ai ran her slender fingers along the hat’s brim, building the tension.” The last one who is in the basement is an ugly kappa!” Silly face with stuck out tongue gushed from under the hat.

“Eeee~!” Girls shouted in shock but Ai was already running through the meadow, holding her hat with one hand to prevent it from falling down during her flight.

The gentle wind was blowing around the four girls and probably in their blanked minds as they speechlessly were looking at each other, searching for an answer to the question...what the hell was that just now?!

“You know...if to consider this....it’s all about the fun, isn’t it?”

Sayu, Reina and Eri simultaneously tilted their heads, looking puzzled at their sub-leader. Gaki just shrugged, ignoring their asking looks and started running to the house.

“Well, I guess it makes sense....” Sayumi admitted and despite not being the best at sport, did her best with chasing after the guitarist.

“Aa! That’s right!” Eri shouted happily like discovering some fact that would change the world’s history and also joined the run.

Reina still stood in the same place, maintaining that flabbergasted expression while looking at her running friends.

“Ugly kappa...?” She muttered to herself and finally the cogwheels in her head rotated. ”Eeee?! Chotto matteyoooo~~!!!” She dashed forward yelling but obviously it was too late for her...

~♪ ♪ ♪~

“The ugly kappa” jumped to the basement raising a grey cloud of dust out of the wooden floor. Coughing, she made her way through the cramped room to take place behind her drum kit.

Risa nodded slightly acknowledging Yankee’s readiness, brought her guitar closer to the loudspeaker and strummed the strings, causing high sound to hang in the air.

“Three, two, one, go!”Reina counted down and started wildly banging her drums.

The melodic riffs of the guitars and low, twangs of the bass quickly joined in and soon everything was connected by the soft, happy voice of their vocalist creating a perfect circle of cheerful harmony...

You lead a life of fear, forgot how to laugh
I'm sorry I didn't notice

I saw you from the back, your head held low
A fire rose in my heart and jolted me
I can tell you know that…

Who would have guessed that in that time, under that lone swinging light bulb, they all were improvising, playing music straight from their hearts...

STAND BY YOU STAND BY YOU you’re not alone
Everything in this world had meaning
Stretch your hand out and everything will open up for you

Let's embrace tomorrow together!!!

Track 2. The first time ♪

“Does she even intend to come today?” The more and more irritated guitarist almost trod a path in the tiled floor under the oak doors with a sign RECORDING STUDIO.

Their manager, who happened to have the keys to the room, was an hour late and above all, hadn’t bothered to answer the phone. That along with the early morning hour and the lack of sleep was visibly turning the usually patient and calm Risa into a grumpy Gaki.

“Calm down.” Ai paused her game, looking up at her friend. ”I’m sure something important held her back.” She stood up from her chair and dragged the bundle of nerves back to her seat.

Coming back to her game, she got that weird feeling of being attentively observed. “What?” She asked, noticing the mistrustful look Gaki was giving her.

“Who are you and what have you done to Ai-chan the demon of punctuality?”

Ai furrowed her eyebrows in response and uttered mockingly.

“Was kidnapped together with Risa the cheerful brat and was locked in a different dimension.”

Gaki sighed at the apt retort and leaned her head against the cold wall behind her chair.

“Can we call this a draw?” She glanced upon Ai, her features gradually softening.

“Yeah…” Ai smiled heartily and continued playing her game.

As for the rest members, they had slightly different ways of killing the time…

“Reina, can you turn down the volume? I’m trying to get some sleep.”

Though Sayumi was earnestly trying to fall asleep last night, she couldn’t sleep a wink….Her two roommates were chit-chatting, in those squeaky excited voices, about their today’s recording the whole night. So trying to make a good use of Miki being late, she wanted to snatch some sleep before they would enter the studio. However, the loud clamor flowing from the drummer’s headphones successfully prevented her from doing so. What’s more, her plead also seemed to remain unheard. Reina still was idyllically practicing her technique on her “invisible” drum, having her easy shut while making strange grimaces.

The bassist lost her patience, nudging her friend’s arm.

“Wha…?” Reina took off one of her headphones.

“Turn this down, ok?” Sayumi jerked out sourly.

Yankee just shrugged. “Sure”, and…turned up the volume. She then continued her practice just that this time as her snare drum served Sayumi’s head.

The response was immediate. Raven-haired girl jumped out of her seat and hit the wall with her open palm, sinisterly hanging above the drummer. Her irate glare might have been even better than the Yankee’s but still wasn’t enough to scare the younger off.

“Iya! Go away you devil!” Reina squealed mockingly, making a cross out of her pink drumsticks.

“Guys please.” Ai cut in, intimating with her disapproving look that they should stop acting like spoiled brats.

Sayumi reluctantly backed away, plopping in the chair but this time next to Eri, leaving empty space between Reina and Ai. She leaned her head on the fluffy, white shoulder of the only “inactive” member, who was focused on polishing her guitar, and closed her eyes since Reina’s rabid music faded.

“You know what? I think I know what we need.” Ai turned off her console, shoving it to one of her pockets in the baggy blue jeans and made sure she’d taken her wallet.

“I’ll go with you, ok?” Gaki more stated than suggested, showing her readiness to join her friend in whatever she was planning to do. However, Ai put hands on her shoulders and seated her again.

“I’ll be back in five minutes.” She patted her arm, winking reassuringly and ran through the corridor to the building’s exit.

As soon as she found herself on the crowded street, she flipped open her phone, picking the first number from the list of recently chosen.

The mobile phone you are trying to reach is either out of the coverage area, or switched off...
Emotionless voice announced for the third time.

She gave up on phone and scanned the surrounding around her but neither had she found the woman nor her distinctive black jeep. Exhaling deeply, she ran her fingers through her short hair and shuffled to the shop with only one question clouding her mind.

Where are you Miki…?

As she’d left the small shop at the corner of the street, her concerns slightly changed. She was helplessly staring at the five huge cups she tightly held in her arms and couldn’t understand why she’d turned down Risa’s company. And more importantly, why she hadn’t taken any kind of bag…? The only conclusion she could have drawn from her observations was that spacing out in the shop certainly didn’t pay off…It was a miracle that she actually bought what she wanted. She could swear that someday, someone would kidnap her, without her even realizing that fact…Then again, why someone would want to kidnap her…?

She shook her head before her thoughts would become even more tangled. What she only wanted now, was to see Miki after entering the company building, even if she were to give her that strange sort of look which sent shivers down her spine, making her feel like...like…well, actually it was hard to describe that feeling. Anyway it didn’t matter now, she just wanted to finally enter the studio and start the recording and without their manager, it wasn’t possible…Unfortunately, she hadn’t predicted that Miki’s absence wasn’t her only problem…Because, how on earth she would open the building’s door not being able to use her hands…?

She stood, staring at the transparent glass, no one coming in or coming out…She had no choice but to lean against them and push, which wasn’t that simple since the door didn’t want to yield so easily to her strength…

“And you what? Came back to your old work? Being a waitress again?”

Ai just couldn’t express how much relief she felt, hearing that amused voice again.

“Fujimoto-san.” She whispered and certainly would hug her manager if she was able to. The woman took off her sunglasses and helped her with getting to the inside by opening the door for her.

“Didn’t know you are such a coffee addict.” She pointed with her laughing eyes the affectionately held by Ai cups.

“Coffee? Oh, you mean this? No, it’s not coffee, it’s chocolate. I dread to think what would happen if I gave them such a dose of caffeine.”

“I see. They are agitated enough, huh?” Miki grinned, taking from Ai three out of her five cups.

“Thanks.” Ai said, smiling a bit nervously. She must have looked sooo pathetic with all those cups while struggling with those doors. Girls were right…she actually was weird.

“And it’s partially my fault.” Fujimoto continued as they were slowly walking through the corridor.” I’m really sorry for such a delay but some important personal issues held me. I promise it won’t happen again.” She winked, flashing Ai a charming smile.

Leader shyly averted her eyes. Personal issues sounded enough personally to overcome her curiosity and not ask any questions. Somehow she got used to that mysterious aura the woman was spreading around herself. They hadn’t really known much about her as she never talked much about herself and everything they knew was too sketchy to take it as something certain, like the reason why she became their manager…completely for free…Because she liked their music? Ai had some unclear feeling that there was something more to that…Especially, when Miki wasn’t really into rock music…

“Sorry for the wait guys!” Manager exclaimed widely grinning.

The band members welcomed her with slightly less delighted expressions. Their askance looks were showing that their patience had come to an end and they were waiting for some kind of explanation. Well, everyone except Eri who staying oblivious to everything what was happening around her, greeted the manager with gleeful Ohayo!and was rewarded for that with a cup of hot chocolate.

The second got still sleepy Sayumi and the third was for Gaki since Reina already got her drink from Ai. However, before the glowering guitarist was able to taste her drink, her manager just had to anticipate her…

“Sweet~.” She smirked, licking her lips and handed the cup to Gaki.

The girl stared with her scandalized eyes at the straw, wondering if her manager took as a goal, filling her with constant disgust over her person, because up until now that was exactly what she was doing.

She threw away the straw and drank straight from the cup…

“Ok guys.” Miki clapped her hands, gaining everyone’s attention. “Two days of hard work are waiting for us, so no arguments.” She knowingly glanced over the duo of the bassist and the drummer.” No fooling around and…well, as for the flirting we can make an exception.” Smiling roguishly, she winked at Ai.

The same moment as the leader turned into a huge red tomato, the sub-leader choked with her drink, coughing spasmodically.

“Gaki, are you alright?” Ai patted her friend’s back.

“Ye-ah.” She stuttered out, looking balefully with her teary red eyes at her smirking manager.

“So, are you ready?” Miki asked and girls nodded unsurely, losing the track of her speech. “Ok, well then come in.” Finally, she opened the door and girls could enter the studio.

The sight surpassed their biggest expectations. The live room was much more spacious then they’d imagined and was emanating with some kind of calm, cosy atmosphere as the caramel wooden panels were bathed in the dim light of the overhead lamps. The shining, red drum kit stood in the middle, in front of the transparent glass that separated the live room from the control room which interior resembled that of a spaceship. There was a long mixing console with thousand of buttons, huge black loudspeakers above it and some other strange looking machinery cramped in the corners. There also were two isolation booths, one next to another, situated on the right of the control room.

Girl’s sneakers were squeaking quietly on the polished oak floor as they were walking around the room with their mouth hanging open. The first to outburst with her untamed enthusiasm was the leader…

“SUGOI!!!~” She threw herself at the nearest person, clinging to her while still looking around the room with her sparkling eyes.

“Indeed…”

It was then she realized that something was wrong…That taunting yet velvet tone was very unlike for any from her bandmates…

“Ah, Fujimoto-san!” Ai sprung back as if her manager burnt (what would actually explain why she’d turned so red) and started stuttering incoherently while backing away. “I’m…so-rry….I mea-n…I th-ought…” Suddenly, she bumped into Gaki and out of the blue dragged her to the corner of the room, under the pretext of wanting to show her some amp.

“Geez, it’s just a recording studio…” Miki muttered to herself, amused at how the girls were excited.

“You should’ve seen them before our first live house…Shabby, stuffy club appeared to them as Budokan…” Sayumi said casually, being the only one immune to the place’s charm.

“Really?” Miki raised her eyebrow, curiously eyeing the bassist. “So, why are you different?”

Sayumi stared at her for few seconds as if pondering but in the end she just shrugged and shuffled toward the row of amps to plug in her bass.

“I’m soooo sorry!” To the studio burst in small woman with disheveled short hair, wearing a yellow summer dress.

“At last! I thought you’d forgotten about us.” Miki greeted the woman with a friendly hug.

“Of course I didn’t! I’m late because of that horrible traffic jams.” The woman vigorously explained herself while trying to do something with her disarranged hair.

“Ok girls, come here for a second. I want to introduce you to someone.” Miki turned to the band and they immediately formed a line, curiously gazing at the petit woman. Her face was radiating with some childlike grin but at the same time she gave an impression of being very mature.

“I present you the future destroyers of Budokan and invaders of the oricon charts! …” Miki paused as if to raise the tension and gushed with smug smile. “NanairoNoizu…”

Girls stared bemusedly at their manager. Was she talking about them? Destroyers of Budokan? Invaders of the oricon charts? What the…? She planned to turn them into soldiers or something?

“Eto...I think our manager got slightly carried away by her imagination…We are a band not a soldier’s troop…” Gaki squinted over Miki.

“Don’t worry, I know what you mean.” The woman grinned, waving dismissively. “So before she is going to introduce me as some musical superhero, I’ll do that myself. Abe Natsumi, your recording engineer, arranger and keyboardist. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.”

Well, maybe she wasn’t a musical superhero but after that introduction girls thought that indeed she wasn’t that far from the title. Was she a music genius…? After a moment of thunderstruck, girls proceeded with their introductions, starting with the leader and ending with the drummer.

“Ok since we have presentations behind us, let’s talk about work.” Natsumi’s face turned serious and her firm tone almost made girls to spring to attention. “First we do the drums, good drums are essential, next is bass then guitars and of course vocals. Is everything clear?”

Yes sir! you would like to say, but girls decided to go with an earnest got it!

“Don’t fall for her look. She’s a real devil.” Miki muttered as she walked past the row of girls, making them chuckle lightly.

“Don’t listen to her she is exaggerating like always.” Natsumi reassured the girls smiling heartily. “Anyway, let’s do a small warm up and rehearse your songs, meanwhile I will prepare everything and we will begin as soon as you are ready.”

Abe left with Miki to the control room while girls started plugging in the instruments and checking everything.

Not having much to do with her mic, Ai attentively observed her friends and couldn’t shrug off the feeling that something was wrong. It was too quiet…Her eyes immediately wandered to the drum kit, finding the cause of the unnatural stillness. Their youngest member was painfully quiet; normally while sitting behind the drums, she was full of energy whereas now she sat hunched and still, not even trying to play anything.

Carefully, as if not to frighten away the drummer, Ai walked toward her. “Don’t like your new set?” She asked being well aware that Reina didn’t like to talk about things which were nagging her. As for that she had to be very delicate in order to persuade the girl to an honest confession.

“Nah, it’s cool, much better than mine worn out in the basement and it resembles a lot the one I practiced on in the music room after school.” Reina answered with steady eyes lingering on the gold shining cymbals.

“Really? So, nothing new for you, huh?” Ai smiled, gently nudging her friend as she stood next to her.

Yankee gushed with a sheepish grin. Not used to being complimented, she didn’t know what to say, not to mention that she wasn’t really sure if leader’s opinion about her was right…

“Reina…isn’t really that good…” She murmured quietly, tapping at the snare drum.

It was somehow sad for Ai to hear those words. From the moment she met her, Reina always impressed her not only with her confidence but above all, with her talent. It was true that she sometimes got carried away by her punk rock soul, playing way too fast but her technique was very good, especially that she was an autodidact who started playing at the age of eleven. Maybe the Abe’s essential drums sowed a seed of doubtfulness in her mind?

She squatted next to the drummer to have a better insight into her worried eyes.

“Hey, don’t say such things.” She brushed a strand of black hair off Reina’s face and immediately red hue appeared on girl’s cheeks. “You are very talented. I’ve never met anyone so young and already playing so well. Besides, if you hadn’t been good, you wouldn’t be sitting here now, with us.” Ai said quietly yet in an empathic tone, not leaving spaces for any possible but’s coming from the drummer.

“Oh, and by the way, I have something for you.” She reached to her pocket and took out a bar of chocolate.

“My favorite!” Reina’s eyes regained their sparkle as she unpacked the snack and took a bite. She almost purred with content, chewing the sweet delicacy, what brought smile back onto Ai’s face.

“Honestly leader, yesterday Gaki-san today Reina….you’re turning into some rock star playboy…” Sayumi clucked in disapproval, pretending to be truly scandalized. “I’m seriously concerned about you…”

Ai stood up, furrowing her eyebrows in a mocking glare. “Very funny Sayumi.” She retorted, making as if she would be offended by her friend’s teasing.

“Can we finally start the rehearsal?” Gaki reminded her friends for what they had actually come here.

“Yeah, let’s begin.” Ai patted Reina’s shoulder, exchanging a knowing look with her. The again confident Yankee was ready to rock.

“Stand by you!” Ai announced to the mic and Reina counted down like always just a bit happier and prouder than usually…

“One, two, three, go!!!”

The fifth hour of the recording passed. It was a pretty good result taking into consideration that it was girls’ first contact with the professional recording studio. There wasn’t many redos, except from Eri’s few mishaps but generally, Natsumi was pleased with the progress and had given girls an hour break. After they’d come back from their dinner, came turn for Risa’s guitar parts. She and Abe started preparing everything in the isolation booth while Ai was observing them from the control room.

She was swaying back and forth as if slowly getting impatient from waiting for her turn. The rest of the members went to search for some Reina’s idols who supposedly also had a recording somewhere in the building. Actually, the Yankee insisted on Ai coming with them but she preferred to stay and have an eye on Gaki, not that she was worried that her friend might mess up something but simply because she enjoyed listening to her playing. It would also help to relax her before her own recording for which she just couldn’t wait.

“Soo, Ai-chan…” Abe entered the room and took a seat behind the mixing console, showing Gaki her readiness by raising her thumb.” Tell me something, what Nanaironoiz stands for? I mean, Miki was telling me about your band but somehow she missed that and I always forget to ask her.”

Ai gave the woman a puzzled look. First thing that struck her was that Abe could so easily do several things simultaneously. She was attentively observing and listening to Gaki, doing things on the mixing console and even was talking to her…soo cool…

But disregarding that, what even more surprised her were her words. What Miki actually told her about them? She knew that Fujimoto hadn’t forgotten to mention their name origins; simply she didn’t know about that herself…Though she was their manager, she never really asked them about things concerning their music or their band, except from when and where had they met each other. That somehow made her wonder again, why she wanted to become their manager in the first place…?

She snapped out of her thoughts as she noticed Abe’s awaiting look. “Well, seven colors stand for our colorful, cheerful appearance whereas noiz…sounds cool…” She couldn’t help but to grin at the last words.

“Cool?” Natsumi chuckled as she kept her eyes on the playing guitarist.

“Yeah…it was Reina’s idea. She wanted something that would sound rockish and cool. She asked me how it was “noise” in English, I told her, she wrote it down and it stayed like that.”

Ai almost giggled as she reminded herself other propositions for their band’s name. Reina’s killing squad, Sayumi’s cutie rangers and Kamei’s crazy ninja turtlesSeven-color noise was actually the most sensible choice…

“Oh, you learn English?”

“Just a bit. It’s a very melodic language so I sometimes use it in our songs.” Ai modestly admitted.

“I see…” Abe glanced sideways at the vocalist, casting her some mysterious smile. ”Ok, now your turn.”

“My turn?” Ai asked, not quite catching what the woman meant.

“I’m sure you want to ask how come I know, how all those things work.”

Good point…Ai thought, not dwelling much on how the woman guessed that.

“Well, then how do you know?”

“My mom was an arranger while my dad was a recording engineer. I grew up in such a surrounding. It served as my playground.” Natsumi explained with some note of melancholy in her voice.

“Wow, it must have been cool to have such parents…” Ai smiled weakly while thinking about her own family. ”I wish mine would be somehow involved with the music business.”

“They give you a hard time because you’d chosen a musician’s path, huh?” Natsumi didn’t hide her sympathy for the girl.

“Yeah…” Ai sighed sadly,” but it’s not just me. We all have somehow strained relations with our parents.”

“Don’t worry they will understand someday.” The woman smiled reassuringly and Ai just hoped she was right. Even though, her parents hadn’t accepted her decision she still loved them…

“Ano…where’s everybody?” Miki entered the room, holding a bag with cans in her right hand and a pink lollipop in her left.

“Oh, they went to look for some band Reina likes. They seem to have a recording somewhere in the building.” Ai answered her question, catching the tossed silver can.

“Well, since she finally didn’t rush her drums today, she definitely deserved for some reward.” Miki leaned against the mixing console, back turned on Gaki. “What have you told her anyway?” She asked while sucking at her pink candy.

“Nothing…” Ai’s eyes sparkled with mysterious self-satisfaction. “Just gave her a chocolate bar.”

“A chocolate bar? Are you sure there weren’t any drugs or stimulants in it?” Miki wagged her lolly at Ai, eyeing her suspiciously.

“Yeah, I’m sure.” The vocalist giggled at Miki’s mocking look.

“Eto, is it just me or is Risa-chan playing very similarly to her friend?” Natsumi suddenly pointed out.

“Nah, actually it’s the other way around. It is Eri who plays similarly to Gaki. After we arrived to Tokyo, Risa was often teaching her and Eri somehow adapted her technique.” Ai quickly explained. “Actually, the same goes for me.” She added, catching Gaki’s smile as for a second their eyes met.” Risa was first to master the electric guitar and she also taught me a lot. She is a good teacher.”

“Anyway,” Miki interjected abruptly, bringing Ai’s attention back to her.” I think we should celebrate.”

“Celebrate?”

“Yup,” Miki took out her lollipop with a soft pop, “the recording of your first single. Maybe tomorrow at my place. Of course after we finish the job, what do you think?”

“Su-re…why not…” Ai’s voice drawled as she unwittingly stared at how the woman played with her candy, brushing her tongue past its glistening, sugary layer.

“Nacchi, you are also invited.”

“Thanks but I have work.” Natsumi glance upon her friend, giving her a wry smile.

“Oh come on, you are turning down such cute girls?” Miki winked at Ai, turning the lollipop in her mouth. The girl immediately averted her eyes, squirming under her manager’s gaze.

“I wish I could go but don’t forget that there is still a lot to do with the songs.” Natsumi cut the topic short, not even looking Miki in the eye as she was focused on Gaki who almost finished playing.

“Well…less competition…” Manager smirked and slyly slipped in her lollipop to Ai’s unwarily spread lips.

Perplexed Ai, immediately flushed with crimson red, tasting the strawberry flavor which just seconds ago was tasted by her manager…Her mind completely shutdown as she stared at the smugly grinning woman whose actions were simply too incomprehensible for her. She didn’t even realize as all of a sudden, the music flowing from the loudspeakers abruptly ended.

“What happened?” Natsumi asked confused as Gaki left the booth.

“The G string has broken.” Risa nervously scratched the back of her head while showing Abe her guitar,” I strummed it too hard…sorry.” She apologized to the woman, looking sideways at flabbergasted Ai who still didn’t know what to do with the candy in her mouth.

“I heard…your last notes sounded horribly.”

“Are you feeling alright?” Ai finally woke up, reminding herself that Gaki never, ever broke strings. “You seem to be a bit nervous.” She grabbed her shaking hands, squeezing them affectionately.

“May I?” Risa pointed with her eyes at the white stick protruding from Ai’s mouth but before leader was able to answer or even understand her friend’s question, Risa snatched the lollipop and threw it out to the bin in the corner. “Ok, let’s change the string and start again.” She gushed with a wide grin and came back to the booth.

Feeling totally bewildered twice during such a short period of time, Ai didn’t even try to strain her grey matters, she knew it was useless and both Miki’s and Risa’s behaviors would stay for her great mysteries. She could write lyrics and compose music but that was just too much. Her manager…well, frankly speaking, was flirting with her...and Gaki was breaking strings of her precious Mana-chan…? What actually was going on?

She plopped in the chair behind Natsumi and sighed deeply. It was just too much for her little and already disorganized brain. Fortunately, the absent members came back and though Reina was a bit woeful, since she didn’t found her idols, everything came back to the relative order…

Just that now…she was going to wait even longer for her turn to sing…

~♪ ♪ ♪~

The recording ended later than Natsumi expected as Ai turned out to be a terrible perfectionist. Even after everyone’s assurances that everything was great, she still had to find some note that for her sounded off-key. As for that she had had five takes before she finally admitted that her vocals sounded…passably… It still didn’t change the fact that when they left the studio it was already dark outside.

“So, who is going with me?”

The black jeep’s lights lit for a second as it beeped, almost cheerfully announcing its readiness to welcome the girls.

“It’s ok we can go by foot.” Leader politely declined immediately getting for that three ominous looks from the members who unlike her had to carry their instruments.

“Ai-chan,” Miki approached Ai, draping an arm over her shoulder. ”I’m your manager, right?” The vocalist nodded feeling a bit intimidated by how close Fujimoto’s face was to hers.

“So, I should be taking care of you, right?”

Risa flinched hearing the word care. She just wanted to snatch her friend and go back by foot but the urge was restrained by Sayumi’s knowing look. She decidedly didn’t intend to carry her heavy bass all the way to their home…

“Jump in.” Miki grinned, opening the front door before Ai.

Thinking that actually Miki had her point, Ai gave in and entered the car. The rest quickly followed leaving their instruments in the car’s trunk. It didn’t take long before members at the backseat snoozed out of tiredness.

However, Ai stayed perfectly awake, observing through the glass as the neon lights were passing them by. Somehow, all her matters also seemed to pass by, along with those colorful, flickering gleams. She decided not to dwell on Miki’s reason behind why she became their manager. It was unimportant since in the end, Miki was taking a good care of their band…and that was the only thing that mattered to her…

Track 3. Jealous

The atmosphere in the studio was so thick that you could cut it with a knife. Girls’ faces adopted gloomy, tired look as the silence between the two “opponents” was prolonging into endlessness. However, just minutes ago everything was perfectly fine. After eight hours, they had finally ended the recording of their single and the feeling of accomplishment was drawn all over their faces as they attentively listened to the fruit of their work. Tension and stress gathered during the recording, disappeared as if with a wave of a magic wand. But now…

Wrinkled forehead, knitted eyebrows, eyes that wanted to burn a hole in you, small lips tightly shut and crossed arms. There was no mistake Risa was angry and that was putting it mildly because to be honest she made an impression of fury boiling inside of her and waiting just to be released what probably would result in crushing the nearest object within her reach and that happened to be her guitar…

Ai hoped that Gaki’s love to the instrument was much bigger than the wrath she felt. At the same time, a bit intimidated vocalist who nervously was biting her lips while avoiding her sub-leader’s glare was desperately trying to figure out what had she possibly done to offend her friend and turn her into enraged something that surely wasn’t her best friend. It couldn’t be because she’d forgotten to mention something so irrelevant, could it?

Gaki sure liked to overreact but that was too much even for her. She could at least wait until they were alone…Speaking of which did someone intend to help her?

Discreetly she glanced over her band mates but none of them showed any intention of saving her from this hopeless situation. Reina was idly waving her legs while sitting on the control console behind Risa’s back, Sayumi lent against the glass door with bored expression and next to her stood Eri who was staring into nothingness, waiting for everything and nothing at the same time.

Ai sighed in her mind, “thanks guys” . She was done, when it came to dealing with angry Risa she always didn’t know what to do or say, especially when she was the object of her anger and when she had that strong feeling of not doing anything wrong.

“But…” She finally broke the silence which fell after Gaki’s outburst. “I thought it wasn’t that important, so I didn’t mention it earlier. Besides, girls seem to like the idea.” She wasn’t sure whether this line of defense would work but hoped that maybe someone would finally break the silent conspiracy and admit her right.

To her relief Reina’s heavy boots landed with a hollow thud on the floor as she jumped off the console.

“Geez, Gakksan chill out, ‘kay?” Reina coolly patted Gaki’s shoulder. “Tellin’ you wouldn’t change anything so let it drop.” She tilted her head toward the doubting guitarist, fearlessly looking her in the eye and waiting for her to confirm her words.

“It’s not the point.” Risa answered curtly much to Reina’s displeasure. She threw her arms into the air and rolled her eyes. “Here we go again.” She muttered resignedly.

“I simply would like to know earlier about such plans.” Gaki continued in her flat tone.” Especially, when those plans concern me.”

Ai though got an unclear feeling that there was something more to this but since the whole situation was getting pretty tiresome, not only for her but for the rest too, she decided to cut the topic short.

“I’m sorry Gaki-chan. You are right, I should have asked about your opinion and decide together with you.” She deeply looked into her friend’s eyes, noticing in them the inner war Risa waged with herself. Luckily, good always win…

“Okay, I agree. “ She muttered reluctantly. “But we are back before the midnight, I’m tired.” She quickly added, unwarily putting off Reina’s enthusiasm which started to grow in her after Ai’s earlier announcement. Her jaw dropped and she couldn’t believe her own ears. She stuck her eyes on Ai expecting her to disagree with Risa and her ridiculous rule. However, knowing what drummer had in her mind Ai made just that “I’m sorry” face again.

“Sure, no problem Gaki-chan.”

Apparently, it was a situation in which someone had to stay unpleased with the final outcome. She hoped Reina would understand that she had no other choice but to appease Risa.

The same moment the small crisis was prevented to the room entered Miki.

“Everyone ready? Can we go?” She asked rubbing her hands and grinning from ear to ear.

Ai gave Risa a puppy look, forcing some kind of response coming from her and Reina once again held her breath whether in suppressed anger or anticipation, no one really knew.

“Yeah, let’s go.” Risa hid her guitar into its black bag and sling it on her back. She then took Ai by the arm, still keeping that stern look and they left the studio.

Ai was wondering what possessed her friend as Gaki almost painfully clung to her arm. One thing was for sure, Gaki needed to relax just like Reina had stated. So, maybe the little celebration at Miki’s place would sooth her nerves eventually…?

~♪ ♪ ♪~

Ai was sitting at the back seat of the black jeep, observing the passing by pictures behind the glass. She would sit at the front but for some reason Gaki strongly insisted on sitting next to Fujimoto. Not wanting to start another pointless argument, Ai agreed not asking anything. Actually, it was fun to sit at the back. Next to her sat Reina who judging by the things she whispered to Sayumi was highly excited about the whole rock’n’roll party  how she called it.

“Nee, nee Sayu, think she lives in some fancy villa with pool and all that rich stuff like crystal chandeliers and panthers kept in cages?” Reina’s eyes were sparkling with excitement as she spoke to her friend in a hush tone.

Nevertheless, the bassist seemed to take her behavior as an effect of a chocolate overdose. She giggled and teasingly poked Reina’s forehead which immediately wrinkled. Ai observed the whole situation sideways, smiling inwardly.

The jeep, trademark clothes and the fact that Fujimoto worked for them completely for free, stating just that she had enough of money, surely had to stimulate their youngest member’s imagination. But honestly, Ai was also curious about where their manager lived and how her home looked like. Did she have any animals? And if yes then what kind of, a dog, a cat maybe fishes? Did she actually live in a house or an apartment and what kind of view she had from her windows? Yeah, she also felt a tingle of excitement but noticing Gaki’s eyes in the back mirror pointed at her, she sunk deeper into her seat and stopped grinning dumbly. Somehow, she didn’t want to bring Gaki’s attention at her, at least until she was sure that Risa got back to being herself again.

The journey ended soon but Ai being lost in thought, didn’t even realize they’d arrived until Reina tugged her sleeve. She left the car and couldn’t believe her own eyes.

The steel blue structure shone in the orange rays of the setting sun which reflected in its windows. Looking at its last floor for few minutes long could result in serious neck ache as it almost reached the sky. Was it here where Miki lived…?

“Osam…” Reina blurted, looking at the huge building before them.

“Yeah, but unfortunately I still didn’t get myself a cage with a panther…”  Miki added offhandedly with disappointed grimace drawing on her face.

Girls looked at their manager startled by the serious tone of her words. Suddenly, they felt kind of awkward at the thought of spending their time at this place.

“You are coming or are going to stay here and stare the whole evening?” Miki set off, waving at the girls to follow her. They hesitated a while before Reina made the first step, gushing with some alarming wicked grin.

“I have some bad feeling about this…” Gaki muttered under her breath but Ai grabbed her palm and with encouraging smile, followed the rest of their friends.

They entered the lobby and saw Miki talking with the porter; she then headed for the elevator showing girls too hurry up. The impressive inlay just flashed under their feet as well as the shining chandelier on the ceiling and the elevator’s doors shut.

The silence fell between girls. Risa leant in the corner with crossed arms, suspiciously scrutinizing Miki for what she gained a disapproving look from Ai, Reina was already so agitated that one could almost here the happy jingle of her pins and studs which decorated her leather vest and Eri fooled around with Sayumi, poking her shoulder which was to cause Sayu fall onto their manager. Finally, the bell ring and doors opened, Ai just glanced at the number and discovered that they were on a 30th floor that somehow made here wonder was she ever so high above the ground…?

Miki opened the door to her apartment and let girls in. They found themselves in a long corridor with white-grey tiles; quickly they left their shoes in the shoe closet and followed Miki like tourists following their guide. They passed bathroom to the right dressing room to the left and kitchen also to the left, before they finally walked in to the living room. Speechlessly, they stood before the huge window which displayed breathtaking view of the city’s panorama bathed in the orange glow of the setting sun.

“It looks even better from the balcony.” Miki pointed at the opened door and encouraged girls to check it for themselves.

Knowing how high they were girls felt a bit scared but couldn’t resist the view and so they walked to the balcony. It was worth it as now they could fully see the Kitanomaru Park with cherry blossom trees as well as the National Showa Museum but of course the most important was…

“BUDOKAN!” Girls shouted in union, pointing at the concert hall.

“Yeah…”Miki didn’t even giggle as if expecting them to act like that.” As you can see it’s not far from here so after your concert there you can sleepover at my place.”

“Eeeee~…”Girls laughed at how confident their manager was of both their performance in the famous hall and them wanting to stay over the night at her place.

But Ai stood silently, gazing at the grey octagonal roof that from up here appeared so small. Nippon Budokan, dream of all Japanese bands. Once you got there you could say you’d achieved everything and she knew just everything about it. How high it was, how many people could hold, what bands had appeared there, even information connected with martial arts. If there was a quiz about Budokan she most definitely would win it, although she’d never gotten a chance to actually be there…

“One day, we will perform there, nee Leader?”

She heard Eri’s quiet voice. The guitarist stood next to her looking into distance with the same dreamy eyes. She wondered if the turtle could read her mind…

“Yeah…surely we will…” Smile spread across Ai’s face, it would be a long road but she would give her best to stand there on that stage and perform with her band…

The sun set and night started its rules…

“And you two what? Waiting for UFO to capture you? Come on, we have champagne.” Miki took their hands and led them back to the room.

In the middle of the room, on the glass table stood small bucket filled with ice and a bottle of champagne. Surely it was an alcoholic one but even though most of them were underage, Ai didn’t really pay attention to that thinking about their future performance. How would the stage look? Would the tickets be sold out? What she should wear? And what about the setlist? She finally came back to earth when Miki gave her the glass.

“I must admit you did awesome job in the studio.” Manager started ceremoniously raising her glass. “So, here’s to Nanaironoiz and their first single! Cheers!”

“Cheers!” Girls followed and their glasses clinked in the midair.

Everyone was in high tension, laughing and talking about their upcoming live houses. Ai could sigh with relief seeing smiling Gaki again but that was until…

“So…who’s gonna give your manager a kiss for arranging the recording of your first single?”

Conversations stopped and girls’ eyes wandered to their manager’s grinning face.
But before anyone could answer and Miki add whatever she wanted to add, hands grabbed her shirt and her lips were successfully shut.

Girls’ jaws dropped…It actually was a miracle that none of the girls let her glass from her hand as they all gaped at their bassist who was deeply penetrating their manager’s mouth…

The passionate kiss ended with a wet smack and triumphant grin of the mischievous bunny. Miki though for a second stood with closed eyes as if not knowing what just had happened.

“What?” Sayumi asked innocently noticing her friends’ stares. “Fun is no harm, right?” She quoted her manager’s already famous phrase.

“Eto…Sayumi, I think we should hang out more together…”

Sayu said nothing to her manager’s proposal but seemed to have nothing against the idea as she maintained the cute smile. She must have been extremely proud of catching Miki off-guard earlier.

“Yuck! That was gross!” Reina bluntly commented her friend’s action making a wry grimace of disgust.

“And you what? Jealous? Wanna a kiss too?” Suddenly, the cute smile on Sayu’s face was replaced by the salacious smirk as she eyed her next prey. The instant change of her character was kind of creepy and made the rest wonder which one was the true Sayumi, the cute bunny or the evil hare?

“What?! Are you out of your mind?!” Yankee shouted, giving her friend a sneerful look and handed her glass to Eri as if she was preparing for something.

“Oh you don’t have to pretend…” Sayu made a few steps toward Reina visibly invading her personal space and ever so slightly licked her lips, eliciting another groan of revolt coming from the drummer.

“Stay away.” Reina hissed through her gritted teeth, slowly backing away but immediately Sayu came closer again. “Make me…” And just as she was to reach for her victim’s vest, Reina acting on instinct ran away at safe distance.

Of course Sayumi ran after her and so the pair started chasing each other around the table, the brown couch and the three perplexed girls who had no idea what was going on.

“You damn rabid hare! I swear I’ll kill you when we are back!”

“Try your luck! But I’m afraid that I’ll be first to capture you!”

They were yelling, provoking each other when the most terrible thing Reina could have ever imagined, happened to her. She stumbled over her own leg and with loud thud landed on the brown carpet. The rest just winced at the painful sight.

“Oh my god, Reina are you alright?” Ai ran to the flatten person on the floor and knelt next to her.

“Had Reina died and gone to heaven?” Yankee muttered, rolling onto her back. Apparently, she mistook Ai for the heaven’s descendant… “Nope, but in a second I’ll take you there.” She jerked hearing the teasing voice and rested on her elbows. Seeing as Sayumi straddled her still smiling wickedly, she must have realized, she hadn’t deserved for heaven…

“Nooo~!”She turned on her stomach and desperately scratched the carpet, trying to get out from under her assailant but it was all futile.

“Ano Sa-yumi…I think she has enough…” Ai wanted to somehow stop the bassist but was too scared to really get between the hare and her prey and obviously words didn’t reach her as she leant forward to Reina’s ear.

“You know what Reina?” She purred quietly.” You are damn cute when you act so desperately…” The body under her froze and anxiety shimmered in Yankee’s brown orbs as she slightly flushed. She wanted to say something, probably some curse but then Sayumi moistened her lips and ducked her head even more to…nip Reina’s ear.

Drummer’s body strained at the touch, she bent her head backwards and her face crooked with some unspoken agony but just as the contact was over her eyes rolled and…she fainted…at least it looked like that…

“Reina?” Ai took the lifeless body into her arms, giving Sayu disappointed look as she fled to the three other girls. “I told you she had enough.”  She scolded, shaking gently Reina’s body.” Reina wake up.”

“Has she really fainted?” Risa curiously peeked from behind Ai’s shoulder.

“I don’t know…”Ai delicately slammed Reina’s cheeks but her eyes remained closed which made leader seriously worry.

“Reina stop pretending, Ai won’t hold you like that forever.”

And so, Sayumi’s nonchalant remark miraculously resurrected Reina as she stood up, throwing daggers from her eyes at the bunny again.

“Just wait till we’re back.” She growled but the other girl was unmoved by the threat. “Whatever.” She waved dismissively and drank up her champagne.

“Thank you for the little “show” guys, it was highly enjoyable.” Miki joked, clapping her hands. “I think now we will move on.” She came closer to the small mahogany cocktail cabinet under the huge plasma TV and swung open its door.” So, who wants a drink?” Miki moved away so that girls could see the cabinet’s interior which consisted of bottles in different colors, shapes and sizes.

“Nice…” Reina muttered, bearing her fangs in a toothy smirk but just as she wanted to make a step forward someone grabbed her collar, preventing her to do so.

“Where are you going? As far as I remember you are just 16, show me your ID first and then we may talk about alcohol.”

Reina raised her eyebrow, looking behind her back at her sub-leader who still held her collar.

“I’m not a kid and you ain’t my mom to tell me what I can do and what I can’t. “ With that she not so gently removed Gaki’s hand from her vest and ostentatiously adjusted it. “Fujimoto-san is the oldest and our manager and she lets me, right?”

“Well, just a bit won’t do harm I guess. Besides, you drank champagne.” Miki shrugged and winked at Reina. She seemed to like the rebel attitude of the youngest member and decided to support it.

“But it was just a little and because of the special occasion, right Ai-chan?” Risa most definitely didn’t want to give up. Although she also was in the category of the underage, she acted as if being beyond it reprimanding her friend.

“Reina, I’m afraid Gaki is right.” Ai said with a bit of resentment in her voice. If Reina was an adult it would be okay but now she was simply worried about what might have happened if Reina drank alcohol.

The drummer looked Ai straight in the eye, biting the inside of her cheek and clenching her fists. “Sure she is right!”She snapped at Ai. “She always is! God dammit Ai, when will you finally start having your own opinions! And you,” she turned her glare at Risa, “stop telling her what she should do and think!”

After that outburst an awkward silence fell in the room. Ai could see tears starting to appear in Yankee’s eyes, in comparing to them the words she had said, became irrelevant.

“Reina…” She whispered not knowing what to say next but Risa helped her out.

“Don’t change the subject. It has nothing to do with me or Ai but with your age.” Without sentiment Gaki clearly stated that she wouldn’t let Reina touch anything which contained alcohol.

Before a teardrop fell from Reina’s eye, she walked out of the room. Ai wanted to follow but felt hand on her shoulder.

“I’ll handle that.” Sayumi reassured her. “Mhm…” Ai nodded knowing that despite their constant fights, Sayu was good at getting to Reina while she wouldn’t really know what she should say.

“Geez, Gaki you seriously need to relax.” Miki said as if afraid of Risa not having any ability to have fun without worries but the guitarist just threw her a fleeting glare and walked away to the balcony.

“Gaki-chan…” Ai trailed, seeing off her friend with her eyes but Gaki didn’t intend to stop. Eri went to look for Sayu and Reina and Ai helplessly watched as her band scatters. Not able to bear it she plopped in the couch and hung her head, feeling tears forming in the corner of her eyes.

“I’m sorry,” Miki joined her at the couch, ” seems like I screwed up everything…” She said with a note of regret in her voice and gently stroke Ai’s back.

“It’s not your fault… “Vocalist quietly sobbed and looked up at her. “They will make up eventually…” She smiled weakly.

“Yeah…” Looking into Ai’s wet eyes, Miki softly wiped off with her thumb a lone tear that ran down her cheek. “I’m sure they will.” She smiled back.

Ai just sat there, speechless and unable to move as she gazed into woman’s eyes. She wasn’t sure what she was seeing in them, was it sympathy? Consolation? Or maybe none of those. Nonetheless, she felt drown to them, mesmerized and desperate to solve their mystery…who was the person hiding behind them…? However, now she was also desperate to make things work within the band…

“Excuse me, I…have to go to Gaki…” She slowly stood up, realizing that her cheeks were strangely heated.

She walked to the balcony and let the night’s breeze cool her down before she would confront Risa again. At this hour the view was even more beautiful as the whole city was glittering with lights as if sky would fall upon the earth. Tokyo never slept; actually it woke up at night. Ai once found that a bit scary. Being a country girl from Fukui, she couldn’t get used to such a lifestyle at first but she hadn’t had much choice, concerting at late hours was a norm. However, now after over a year, rather than fear she felt respect and fascination toward the huge city. It could make you big one second but bring you down next…

She looked over Gaki; the girl was leaning against the balcony’s barrier looking up at the flickering with stars sky. Ai came closer and glanced upon her face but couldn’t read anything from it.

“Gaki-chan, what’s wrong?” She asked but received only a shrug in response. “Are you mad at me?” She continued in a sad tone.

“At you? Why would I?” It was an honest answer though the girl didn’t bother to look her best friend in the eye as she admired the starry sky. On the other hand, Ai kept her gaze patiently at Risa.

“Well, I don’t know you tell me…” She said without any malice. She honestly wanted to know what made Risa act like that.

“I’m sorry for that thing in the studio.” The apology came with a note of guilt as Gaki lowered her gaze, she really regretted her earlier behavior. “I don’t know what has gotten into me.”

“Gaki-chan, you don’t like Fujimoto-san, right?”

It was an obvious conclusion but just now Ai realized it. Gaki always changed when Miki was somewhere near. That glare she was giving her, those venomous retorts and the fact that she didn’t want to come here, now everything made sense, just the episode in the car misled her because why would she want to sit next to someone who she didn’t like…?

“Don’t like her…” Risa mused quietly.” And you, do you like her?” She turned to her friend smiling but there was something odd about that smile, it looked as if the guitarist was amused by her own question.

For a moment Ai wondered what kind of answer the girl expected from her, what she wanted to hear and why but no matter what it was, Ai just said what she really felt…

“She is taking a good care of our band. Sure, she likes to fool around but she has a kind heart and she did nothing what would make me hate her, so yes I do like her and want to regard her as one of my friends.”

Risa snorted a laugh averting her eyes and keeping them still at the balcony’s tiles. That must have been exactly what she thought Ai would answer…

“Don’t you think it’s a bit strange that she doesn’t want anything from us?” She asked this time completely serious.

“Maybe she has her reasons, judging by the house she must be rich.” Ai quickly countered her friend’s attack.

“Sure but what if she wants something else…” Apparently, Gaki wanted to hint Ai something with those words, something she might have been afraid to say or admit but if so then she failed miserably…

“Like what?” Ai asked cluelessly.

“Nothing…” Gaki sighed with obvious resignation. “Let’s say I just don’t trust her.”

“Listen…” Ai grabbed Gaki’s arm forcing her to finally look her in the eye. Risa just rolled her eyes and doubtfully faced her friend.” I don’t know her reasons but I do believe she likes our music and has good intentions. I know, I know,” she quickly added seeing as her friend wanted to cut in, “nothing in this world is given to you for free but just this one time take things as they are without dwelling much on them, okay?”

“See? Because you’re such an awful optimist and idealist there must be someone who brings you down to earth, forgive me that this someone is me.” Risa tousled affectionately Ai’s short hair, smiling this time heartily.

“Eeee~? I’m not an awful idealist.” Leader pouted, playfully poking her friend’s shoulder. Again she felt as if Risa was the older one because to tell the truth she had her right. Ai was the dreamer while Gaki was the realist though it wasn’t always like that. When they were kids they both were dreamers, everything changed when they arrived to Tokyo…

“Nee, Ai-chan are you cold?” Gaki looked with concern at Ai who rubbed her hands against her arms. Her loose white-pink blouse served as a poor shield against the night’s chill.

“It’s okay, I’m fine…” The reassurance sounded terribly unconvincing since her teeth chattered as she spoke.

Risa just shook her head and unzipped her red hoody sweatshirt “Come here.” Shoving her hands to her pockets, she spread her arms in an inviting gesture.

Ai could feel her cheeks slightly flush again but since it was Risa it was okay She loosely wrapped her arms around girl’s slim waist and snuggled into the warm body. She could hear the rhythmically beat of her heart and smell the fruity scent Gaki was giving off.

“I could fall asleep like that…” She blurted and immediately lit up like a red traffic light but Risa just merely giggled.” Well, if you can sleep standing then go ahead.”

Ai smiled burying her face into Gaki’s shoulder. It felt nice to have someone this close, especially that she didn’t remember when was the last time the two of them shared such a moment, guess when they were kids and were having sleepovers almost every night…

Unfortunately, the sweet moment was interrupted when in the balcony doors appeared timid turtle.

“Uhm…” Eri murmured, wandering with her eyes everywhere just not to look at the hugging friends. Girls quickly realized that it must be their position which made her feel so awkward and so with note of reluctance exchanged in their gazes, they stepped away from each other. “Fujimoto-san is calling you for a meal.” She announced what she had to announce and hid back to her shelf.

Ai and Gaki followed her to the room…not letting go of each other hands…

On the brown carpet beside the table sat Eri, Sayumi and Miki, all focused around the small cooker on which pieces of meat were already sizzling. They seemed to be very engrossed in eating but Ai noticed the strange glance Miki gave her when she and Gaki entered the room. She stared at their laced fingers so intensely that at first Ai wanted to let go of Risa’s hand but that didn’t happen until they sat.

“Where is Reina?” Ai asked not able to hide her concern about their youngest member.

“A wounded heart will fade away~”Loud wailing resounded as groggy Reina entered the room, holding some empty bottle in her hand. “The love is destroying you~”

“She is totally smashed…” Sayumi rightly noticed. “Yeah, completely wasted…” Miki added not able to restrain herself from laughing. “But what the hell is she singing?”

“Oh, Dir en grey’s Jealous. They are one of her favorite bands. “Sayumi answered and Ai provided the further explanation. “They were first visual kei band whose song she’d heard.”

“Yep, and they helped her to overcome her anger making a better use of it. She started to punch cymbals instead of people faces. You could say that thanks to them she didn’t end up in reformatory.” Sayumi in her emotionless voice continued. “Well, actually it also was thanks to Ai-chan, I guess…” She added after as second thought.

“Mm-e?” Ai babbled holding a piece of meat in her teeth.

She had heard about Reina’s achievements in breaking people’s noses, some of them she even saw during the school camp but she had no idea what kind of role she played in the socializing process of the young Yankee. She always thought it was thanks to drums that those events never repeated again.

“Yeah, you will understand one day…maybe…” The last word Sayu muttered to herself though the rest heard it well which made Ai want to continue the topic but then someone entwined arms around her neck and leant against her back…Reina reached her goal…

“In full bloom with the flowers~”She continued her “singing” just a bit quieter as if concerned about leader’s hearing.

“Are you okay Reina?” Ai asked glancing behind her back. Yankee tilted her head and with bored expression drawled, “Jealous~” and slid against Ai’s back to the floor.

“Sayumi…” Gaki began calmly, “how exactly did you deal with her?”

“Let see…I figured it out that the best option was to give her what she wanted.” She beamed a radiant smile and Miki patted her shoulder. “Good job.” She winked amused by girl’s honest answer.

“I can’t believe it! Have you all lost your mind? She is just a kid!” Gaki snapped standing up. Meanwhile, the person in question was peacefully drooling with her head still leant against Ai’s back, making her unable to move and calm down her sub-leader.

“Honestly, Risa what’s your problem?” When Miki stood up Ai knew it was too late to stop any of them. ”Are you her mother or something? So what she got drunk? Tomorrow she will get a hangover and learn her lesson. She won’t touch alcohol until she turns twenty so spare us your nagging!”

“Oh right, forgive me for acting responsibly and caring for my friend!” Risa yelled back sarcastically.

“If you care so much for her then where were you when she was getting drunk, huh?”

That was the last straw…

“You…” Gaki hissed and Ai could swear her friend would lunge at Miki but she just couldn’t let that happen. “Enough!”She shouted so loud that even Reina woke up hearing the low manly tone but it worked and both Gaki and Miki stopped in their tracks. “I think we should get going.”

No one questioned leader’s will and girls started gathering their belongings.

“I’ll call for taxi.” Miki suggested seeing as girls were trying to make Reina stand straight.

“We…would appreciate…” Ai breathed out as Yankee’s body again hung on her neck.

“At least she stopped singing…” Sayu chuckled, helping her friend putting on the black vest which Yankee somehow managed to lose.

After ten minutes, they said their goodbye’s and were off to home…

~♪ ♪ ♪~

“Reina? What are you? No, no, no just not here!”

Too late…Ai’s scream wasn’t able to prevent the inevitable….Reddish collage became a decoration of taxi’s green upholstery terribly contrasting with it and the next thing girls saw was the driving away car as they stood with their instruments on the dark corner street.

“Well, at least we didn’t have to pay…” Eri’s words were poor consolation for them as they looked at worn out Reina whose face was as pale as the shinning above them moon and what was even worse, she still had problems with standing and walking.

“So…eek…rry…” Obviously with talking too. The world was spinning in circles and instead of one Ai she saw three which actually wasn’t that bad.

“It’s okay Reina, we forgive you.” Ai felt bad for the kid. Though it wasn’t her fault that Reina was in this stated she couldn’t forgive herself that she hadn’t gone after her back then because she might have dealt with her better than Sayumi did.

However, it was all too late now and it wasn’t worth to ponder about what if so instead of wasting time, Ai decided to take all responsibility.

“Gaki, help me with putting her on my back.”

“Are you sure you’ll be aright?”

“Yeah, we aren’t that far from home and you already carry your instruments, trust me I’ll be fine.”

“If you say so…” Risa helped her friend with crawling on Ai’s back.

“Hold on tight, okay?” Reina gave a slight nod and rested her heavy head on her leader’s shoulder, wrapping hands around her neck.

“Ai-chan, tell me when you’re tired so I’ll take your place.” Sayumi offered and Reina’s grip tightened even more.

“Re-ina…you’re str-angling…m-e…” Ai wheezed but Reina quickly loosened her arms so that Ai could properly breathe again and they could continue their homecoming.

Sayu, Gaki and Eri were marching together, holding each other by arms and quietly humming one of their songs “Let’s shout! From the top of your lungs~ Let’s shout! From the depth of your heart~”

“Let your voice overflow and sing with us~”Ai murmured under her breath not wanting to wake up Reina who fell asleep on her back. Her cute sleeping expression brought back smile to her face. She always was acting tough but now she looked like a little harmless kitten and then she remembered her words as she’d snapped at her and Gaki.

When will you finally start having your own opinions! And you, stop telling her what she should do and think!

Why Reina said something like that? Did she really mean it? And was it possible that she really relied too much on Risa? Seemed like from Reina’s point of view yes…

But Reina was an individual, a lone-wolf, enough to say that she ran away from home when she was fifteen. She was definitely different from them. Listening to punk, hard rock or even metal, she didn’t really fit to the band which had never written a completely sad song. That’s why for someone like Reina, her strong attachment to Gaki might have appeared as a weakness. But Gaki cared not only for her but also for Eri, Sayumi and Reina too. The drummer just needed to understand that relying on your friends wasn’t a bad thing. Besides, though different, Ai couldn’t imagine the band without her so she hoped she could make her realize that she could count on them and trust them no matter what…

“Thank you…Ai-chan…”

Ai abruptly stopped as quiet whisper brushed her ear. She looked upon calm sleeping face on her shoulder.

Talking in her sleep? She thought and heard Gaki’s voice asking her if she was alright.

“Yeah I’m okay, don’t worry.” She answered confidently and started marching again.

Needless to say…she carried the rebel delinquent all the way to their home…

Warning about that chapter being so intense? Aww that's so cute~ I don't think it was bad at all. :)

This is a different type of story for me, but of course it's impossible to resist gorokkies . First I must say, the time you put into it was worth it I think, because that is a great name for the band <3. Artistic, yet so fitting to a group like that. Although... if I abbreviate it... do I spy NIN? XD

Kawaii beam said it right - relationships seem to be quite complicated so far , and who knows how things will eventually shake out! Well, I imagine you might. :P But I don't... though I have my suspicions about you...

I wonder if Manager Miki will turn out to be as friendly a person as she seems, despite the actual friendliness ;), or if she really has a dark ulterior motive (such as getting into dear Aichan's pants?). If so though, that's quite a length to go for simple skirt chasing.

You're one of two people I currently read that write relatively long chapters, and the other one takes ages to post... Then again, this one was two months in coming, eh? Wonder what you have in store for us next? ;)

Oh, and rndm... glad to see you finally seeming to get with the program! (...though I'm one to talk >.>)

Just finished reading all 3 chapters, and I've got to say -- this story is pure awesomeness!

I find it super amusing that Miki and Risa don't get along really well because of Aichan; and I just love how absolutely oblivious she seems to be with the real story behind their animosity toward each other. (Well, more like Risa's animosity towards Miki, but I digress.) And the little ReinAi moments are quite precious; I wouldn't be surprised if the kitty ends up winning the grand prize instead, lol.
